Characters, Subjectivities, and Contraditions proposes a hypothetical form of space - at once urban and domestic - which enlists the idiosyncratic worldviews and fantasies of its inhabitants in the design of architectural affordances. The matrix as a form of spatial organization maximizes encounters between inhabitants. Ambiguous forms, unstable atmospheres, and rampant materiality encourage contradictory interpretations of architectural space and the exchange of personal perspectives through programmatic performance.

I’m figuring out how this world works.
Personalities don’t just stay confined to the private rooms, they get projected and reinterpreted in the public spaces, sometimes in ways that not everyone will agree with.
Everyone has their own set of rooms. As far as I can tell, the rooms are highly specific, built to perfectly accommodate the needs of the inhabitant. And no two rooms are alike.
Activities are contained inside and don’t interfere with one another.
There aren’t any prescribed experiences between the rooms because events have a tendency to spontaneously start up.

Regardless of what happens, this world’s most defining characteristic is that, as quickly as events crop up, they also disappear or get overwritten by other events.

Norm is a chair on an adventure across time and space to collect as many uses as possible. Rather than associating with one primary use, Norm is impressionable, bearing traces of all the uses it encounters. By physically representing the less obvious uses, they cannot be ignored or forgotten. As we engage with Norm’s various functions, we cannot avoid confrontation with the multiple realities of a chair. All of Norm’s functions are part of its identity, regardless of whether or not they are a part of our own understanding of a chair.

Seventy stories of housing, hotel, office, and public programs in downtown Los Angeles organized into seven mixed-use vertical neighborhoods. A different public activity is attributed to each, so despite having the programmatic components, each neighborhood is unique because of its configuration around the form of a public activity. By serving as the departure point for all tenants and members of the public, each of these seven public “super-floors” have the potential to mix classes of people that normally live in very separate areas of Los Angeles.

Looking to a future where increased machine labor is applied domestically, Soft Robots is a testing ground for friendly robot-human cohabitation. With all domestic labor tasked to the robots, residents have leisure time to pursue their creative passions. Orderly living units above allow for efficient robotic work. Below, the messier, flexible spaces serve as studios for the humans, with public traffic as an unexpected factor for spontaneous interaction.

“Headrush” was an exhibition of our thesis studio’s work at the end of the year. The components included a steel central “spine” on which screens displayed our 2D representations, while 18 large scale models were displayed on a plinth whose curves contrast the rigidity of the skeletal frame. The plinth was design to waste the least amount of material and to be taken apart, the concrete blocks holding it up able to be used for other projects. (Advisor: Doug Jackson. Team: Doug Jackson studio. Role: led the design of the plinth and organizing the fabrication and milling of the pieces for a low budget.)

A 15-story communication stair connects outdoor terraces and unifies Pinterest’s headquarters in section, weaving circulation with social spaces and office programs in order to encourage interaction between floors. For its headquarters, Pinterest wanted an iconic centerpiece of a stair that would announce the company’s presence and draw people in from both sides of the urban lobby. Derived from the company’s logo, the form of a spiral within a spiral allows circulation to flow from all sides and offers a moment of pause at its center.

Manual of Biogenic House Sections is a book of drawings documenting fifty-five houses built with carbon-sequestering materials and other low-carbon strategies such as reuse. In addition to digitally modeling and drawing the houses, I researched and diagrammed the life cycles of each featured biomaterial and the conventional extraction-based materials being critiqued. I also helped to develop an embodied and sequestered carbon estimation methodology for select houses and designed the layout of the book. (Principals: Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki, David J. Lewis. The materials of the standard American single-family house, shown in the previous spread, serve as a reference for the biomaterialbased houses selected for the book. I researched and diagrammed the extraction-based materials that contribute to the high embodied carbon and inability to reuse and recycle materials. Biomaterials like straw, by comparison, come from renewable resources and are compostable at the end of their use in a building.

“Gartist Pavilion” by Atelier Werner Schmidt is made of corbelled jumbo straw bales lifted into place by cranes over the course of one week. Drawing the perspective section with a view focused on the interior gives a good view of the unique effects of the corbelling. The carbon calculation I did for this house (see two spreads farther) came out to -84,000 kgCO2e due to the large volume of straw..

“Verbiest” by AgwA Architects is an example material reuse built in Brussels in 2020. The existing industrial structure was retained, but being much too large for a residence, the enclosed, unconditioned spaces were kept to a limit. The rest of the unconditioned spaces function as a greenhouse, a ceramics studio, and a deck. The existing concrete structure is reinfoced with braces made of wood. Concrete slabs and terra cotta roof tiles were reused in-situ. Stones, roof tiles, and railings are reused from a nearby site in the Brussels area.

Axon drawing of “Verbiest”. I found this house on Opalis, a database of material reuse dealers, case study projects, and manuals regarding material reuse (https://opalis. eu/en/projects). The architect provided documentation, which I used to digitally model and draw the house.
For each of the 55 houses, a representative section “chunk” was selected to illustrate the unique tectonic conditions that result from building with biogenic materials.

Carbon calculations of select houses, using volumes measured from the digital models. To develop a methodology, we compared many existing databases and systematically selected the most relevant information. The calculations are challenging because of the range in carbon data from database to database, the lack of data on carbon-sequestering biomaterials, and the insufficient construction details for some of the houses.
