One of America’s Pioneer Performance Herds Rich With the N Bar Heritage
If a purebred Angus cow cannot perform under realistic commercial conditions she should not be a registered cow. With this principle in mind, Russell May founded the Maymont Angus herd in 1948. Over seventy years later, Maymont Angus cattle are still recognized for their practical performance traits which allow customers to be profitable. The Maymont herd began with growth females from very early Angus herds in Virginia and West Virginia. They were based on genetics from the legendary Ames Plantation in Tennessee and the prominent Annefield and Waverly herds of Virginia. Earl Marshall and the Canadian Eston lines of cattle were also represented. Complementing this female base were bulls ahead of their time with regards to size and growth which descended from the Eileenmere and Bardoliermere cattle. Few outside bulls impacted the Maymont herd until the late 1960s when cattle similar in kind became available. Canadian Colossal and several of his sons left a set of high functioning females. Willabar Gay Gordon 56Z and other bulls from the Green Valley herd in Canada contributed as well. As the Angus breed sought to maintain relevance in the cattle industry in the early 1970s, the Maymont herd had already aligned itself with Pioneer Beef Cattle. This program was a division of the Garst family’s Pioneer Seed Corn business and approached cattle breeding with the same highly progressive performance standards. Through Pioneer, Maymont had access to performance packed Big Elban and Rito bulls. Numerous sons and grandsons of RR Rito 707 saw service at Maymont. By 1977, a Big Elban bull bred at Maymont out of a Rito cow stood at the Curtiss Breeding Service AI Stud. At the Pioneer Cattle Division Dispersal, Maymont purchased the proven senior herd sire PBC 707 1M E0046. Also the double-bred grandson of Pioneer Rito 6 named PBC Rito 421 was selected. PBC 707 1M F0203 sold the same day and became the main AI sire at Maymont. Rito Excel 809, known as The Captain, was the promising high performance son of PBC 707 1M E0046 who started his path to prominence that day as well. In the post Pioneer period, powerful Rito-based bulls from the Jorgensen and Shoshone herds were introduced. Shoshone Pied Piper KFD 20 left a tremendous set of females as did Hundred Oaks Rito another Rito 149 son out of a Wye bred cow. Band 105 and his famed son QAS Traveler 23-4 were bred to this set of Rito-based cattle. The performance found in the Maymont program was evidenced by their records in the Virginia BCIA test. In the 1980, 1981 and 1982 Red House tests, Maymont produced the top-performing Angus bull and the high-performing bull groups. A son of PBC 707 1M F0203 from Maymont set the record yearling weight ever achieved by an Angus bull on Virginia BCIA test to that time. Proven bulls that could join female functionality with performance have continued to be introduced into the Maymont herd to maintain the practical performance standard. Bulls such as Super X01 were followed by Leachman Right Time, BCC Bushwacker 41-93 and Ideal 1418 of 8103 4286, OCC Emblazon 854E, OCC Kiddo 832K, and OCC Nab 789N, a linebred OCC Judge son, have also contributed. Today, as was planned years earlier; the Maymont Angus Herd is being positively impacted by line bred Emulation cattle. Phenomenal daughters of N Bar Shadow X 4124, N Bar Emulation EXT A1747 and Sinclair Extra 4X13 were mated to Sinclair Emulate 7XT28, Sinclair Fortunate Son, Sinclair Excellency 5X25 and Sinclair Shadow Rider 9S34. The long held Maymont Angus genetic plan to cross the best of the Traveler, Rito and Emulation lines continues. Today, the intensely line bred Sinclair Emulate XXP and Rito 707 based bulls join Leachman Right Time, Hyline Right Time 338 and other proven sires from the past to create a new generation at Maymont to carry on the tradition of functional, commercially oriented Angus cattle. The genetics from these cattle are thriving from South Eastern United States to the extreme Northwest; from Puerto Rico to China; Argentina to Kazakhstan. It is hoped that seven decades later, Angus cattle bred at Maymont continue to pass the functionality test. We strive for high performing, fertile cattle with longevity that thrive in practical environments.
