One of the giants of the 20th century, Mandela's career was marked not only by his heroic resistance to racism, but also by his poised and soft spoken demeanor. After enduring nearly three decades of prison, much of it at hard labor in a lime quarry, Mandela emerged as a gentle leader who became South Africa's first black president. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership in ending apartheid without violence, and later became a global statesman who inspired millions people around the world.

I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. ONE Dec. 23, 2013

Mandela’s death closed the final chapter in South Africa’s struggle to cast off apartheid, leaving the world with indelible memories of a man of astonishing grace and good humor. Rock concerts celebrated his birthday. Hollywood stars glorified him on screen. And his regal bearing, graying hair and raspy voice made him instantly recognizable across the globe.

Stuart and his family. Provided by his Sister Jayne Belmont

Thin, almost bareheaded, smiling. Stuart Bishop Foster looks exactly like a normal foreigner who lives here in Guangzhou. He first came to the city in 2002, returned to America in 2008 then came back working as a college professor. “His heart was in China.” Stuart’s sister Jayne Belmont said. Usually, he teaches English and American Culture in the university, then goes for a drink or eats something with his friends--except he is now in prison, waiting to be released. YES. PRISON. Everything changed in April this year, when Stuart suffered an accident, then committed a burglary, which cost him eight months in Baiyun District Detention Center. His number in prison is 13H-17410. And now he

is coming home. Stuart’s friend Dounald Thomas explained what happened in an interview via email. In April 14, Stuart had a collision with a local bus on his bicycle in front of Guangdong University of Foreign Language’s North Gate, the place where he works. He was badly hurt in his head. “The floor of his apartment was covered with blood from his head and leg wounds.” Dounald Thomas said, he and his wife went to Stuart’s apartment to take care of him. “He was not clear-headed.... He made little or no sense.” But this was just a beginning. The next day, Stuart was taken away by the police in a bank near his house with some cash in his hands--his upstairs neighbor suffered a robbery that night. An article published in That’s PRD in May mentioned the number of crimes committed by foreigners in China has risen in recent years. Beijing has seen the number of foreigners under criminal investigation rise from 24 in 2004 to 95 in 2010. Most of them are nonviolent crimes like drug trafficking and fraud. Stuart’s case is a particular example, or to say, it’s more like a tragedy. According to Stuart’s lawyer Jade Wei, the amount of money involved was approximately 14,700 US dollars. Stuart was later held in detention then charged of robbery. On a website named helpstuartfoster.com, his friends put information about this event on it. Stuart’s verdict was announced eight months in prison, RMB 10,000 fine and deportation. After his releasing, Stuart will be sent back to the US and cannot return to China. His friends went to the court and wrote comments in the website. Stuart himself said in the court: “What happens today will determine the rest of my life. My friends, family and others have shown me a whole different side of humanity." One of his friends, Louis Berney, who works in the same university with Stuart, wrote this comment in their website: “I just wanted to say how thrilled I am... There finally is resolution, and Stuart will be back home before Christmas. We really couldn't have hoped for better.” On 14th December, Stuart was released and flying back to South Carolina. His friends went to the airport to say goodbye. After hours flying, Stuart himself post a blog in the website that his friends built for him. He wrote: “Words will never be enough to allow expression of my gratitude and profound appreciation for the wealth of awesome people in my life. “As this website has been a lifesaver and brought forth so much positive energy I’m wondering how continue it’s awesome aura.” On 16th December, Stuart wrote an email the first time after his detention: “I' ve always known I was blessed with wonderful friends but all the love, support and efforts undertaken on my behalf during this dark saga are profoundly touching and moving.” His sister Jayne Belmont also says in the email: “I picked Stuart up at airport in Charlotte. He looks, sounds and feels amazingly well…our family is really excited to have him home. “We truly are indebted to his gracious friends in China who saw him through this ordeal.” In the movie The Shawshank Redemption, there is a famous line saying, “Hope is a good thing.” This might be a sentence for Stuart Foster this Christmas. “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies.” ■

I’m falling in love with it slowly.” It’s less-known National Football League game in China, but it’s more amazing game atmosphere in Tianhe Sports Center of Guangzhou now. Richard Young NFL general manager of China says at Guangzhou TV: “NFL still has a long way to go, but it must be useful.
