Neighbor’s Porch Mixed-used Affordable Housing + Community/Education Center

Team: Blair Stingley Professors: Ryan Lemmo, Stephanie Lemmo Spring 2020

02

Austin, TX, USA Neighbor’s Porch is a double envelope system that responds to the cultural, communal, and climatic conditions on the site. It is a threshold of community amenities between the retail and residential conditions in the Holly neighborhood. Three wings compose a windmill form extending across the site, framing three, unique outdoor conditions: a community green space with a metro stop, neighborhood gardens, and a private residential park. The overall form implies the level of public access or privacy for each area. The building masses help to guide circulation. The commercialized spaces are housed on the ground floor at the northern end of the site to establish a relationship with 6th street and its large, mixed-use buildings. The smaller building masses hold community amenities and residential

units on the southern edge of the site, greeting the existing neighborhood. To maintain the legacy of front porches in Austin, shared community porches are created along the perimeter of the intervention by various offset spaces within the double envelope system. The porch system is strategically placed along the southern and eastern sides of each building mass to simultaneously mitigate heat gain, diffuse harsh sunlight, and foster community interaction. This design addresses East Austin’s aging population by providing a wide variety of units for the multigenerational families that have historically lived here. By offering various unit types, the project aims to cater to both the existing neighborhood and rapidly growing greater Austin area.

Parasitic Ribbon Movie Theater Addition + Urban Fabric Intervention

Professor: John Blood Spring 2019

Celine Wu

18

Austin, TX, USA This project investigates the ways a mixed-use movie theater can be added and attached to an existing parking structure like a parasite. By mimicking the helix shape of the garage, the design takes on the form of a continuous ribbon that weaves in and out of the ground. The movement of the addition re-imagines the relationship between the parking garage and the surrounding environment. By attaching itself to the parking garage, the movie theater benefits from this existing structure. It not only uses the garage as an access point, it also takes advantage of the existing structure as supporting element. The design explores architecture as a canopy that sits above the current landscape to redirect people’s attention in three directions: towards

the downtown cityscape, towards the surrounding nature, and towards the movie playing inside the theater. The structure is a continuously ascending ramp that connects all three wings of programs. Approaching the building from the ground floor, one ascends through an elevator to the first wing of the building, which comprises of the entry as well as the bar and concessions stand. Through the covered patio, one can access the outdoor viewing theater that is located on the top deck of the garage. The second wing of the structure sits into the adjacent hill and contains three medium size theater halls. The last wing includes a restaurant as well as a viewing deck that juts out toward downtown.

Above the Périphérique Mixed-Use Market Hall + Social Housing

Paris, France The Périphérique, a ring-shaped highway that surrounds Paris with its wide lanes and high speed vehicular traffic, is situated directly below the site of the project. It acts as a divider between the city of Paris and its immediate neighbors. There are only a number of “gates” that allow access through between these areas. Porte d’Aubervilliers is one located along the Périphérique that serves as a connector between Paris and Aubervilliers.

Celine Wu

This design addresses the discontinuity at this intersection by establishing a place of gathering for the surrounding communities, as well as providing a place of relaxation for its residents. The market hall is situated directly above the Périphérique to stitch the immediate urban

fabric while dedicating an area for the adjacent neighborhoods. Its strategic location allows for safe and convenient access to all the surrounding communities. It is suspended on artificial grounds by a system of steel beams. These wide-spanning beams are supported through cross steel columns on either sides. They allow for the large and unobstructed space that is flexible for any types of programs and events, including food vendors, workshops, park, and even equipment areas. The residential area is located to the north of the market hall connected through bridges stretching across the highway access road. It contains various unit types at multiple scales in order to accommodate a wide range of residents and encourage interaction between them.

Courting Density Urban Density Exploration + Multi-family Residential Housing

Design Excellence Winner Professor: Charles di Piazza Spring 2018

Celine Wu

Austin, TX, USA This urban intervention seeks to challenge Austin’s housing market in a frequently overlooked neighborhood, Hyde Park. Located in central Austin, this area has both the feel of a close-knit community as well as the convenient access to the bustling downtown. The current housing market consists of either single-family homes or large apartment mid-rises with very limited options in between. This project addresses this “missing middle” by exploring multi-family housing to accommodate for the city’s rapidly expanding middle-class. The design aims to increase housing density, while maintaining the integrity of the single family homes people desire. By establishing multifamily courtyard-style housing, the number of units per lot is quadrupled. However, despite the density increase, the homes still allow

for a sense of ownership in both the interior and exterior spaces across all units. The design creates a wide range of exterior spaces based on different levels of privacy. This results in the inclusion of four types of outdoor spaces: a intimate personal balcony, a walled-in private patio, a semi-public front porch and lawn, as well as a shared community courtyard. The relationships between these spaces encourages neighborly engagement, while allowing for privacy when necessary. The lot contains four separate units: one three-bedroom unit, and three two-bedroom units. Every unit has an individual connection to the courtyard through their patio. In addition, they each have their own personal entries from the street front and access to private parking from the alley.

Abu Dhabi, UAE An oasis amidst the United Arab Emirates’ barren desert landscape, the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve on the outskirts of bustling Abu Dhabi is an unexpected sanctuary for wildlife. Covering less than two square miles, the reserve supports a myriad of plant, aquatic, and bird life. Infamous for its thousands of migratory flamingos, Al Wathba allows locals and visitors alike a rare intimate glimpse at these brilliant creatures. An oasis within an oasis, the project beckons visitors with an arm-like gesture, and acts as an area of respite from the sweltering heat of the surrounding landscape. Though its dynamic curves and sweeping forms provide an iconic landmark for guests, the center remains neutral to the ever-changing topography of the wetlands. Much like common bird blinds, the structure is lifted from the ground. The building acts as a blind

not only to flamingos and the wide array of wildlife on the wetland, but also to visitors arriving to the site. It gives little away prior to entry -layers of veiled walls are pulled back to reveal the magnificent view of the landscape. One’s experience of the Flamingo Visitor Center begins upon arrival via automobile. After parking, visitors are directed towards a lift where they ascend to an elevated bridge and into the tower entry. Entering underneath the tower, guests are promptly greeted by a reception desk and a view of the wetlands beyond. Then visitors pass through a display area with education materials and down to the lower levels where the waiting area, cafe and terrace are located. This opens to another exterior court on the eastern edge of the building, where guests depart and return from their wetland trail excursion.

Hyper-Sensory A Visual Report On the Hyper-Awareness of Senses During the Pandemic

Celine Wu

48

Professor: Igor Siddiqui Fall 2020

This series of drawings documents the heightened senses people are experiencing during this unprecedented time. The drawings explore the inescapable and persistent sensory experience one has within a certain space or action through metaphorical representations. By abstracting the senses, one can start to visualize how sound, smell, and touch look like through colors and patterns.
