AS WE CELEBRATE WOMEN’S MONTH, WE WANT TO RECOGNISE SOME OF THE INCREDIBLE WOMEN WHO ARE STRIVING TO BRING CHANGE THROUGH TECHNOLOGY TO OUR WORLD. THESE WOMEN ARE WHAT WE CALL CHANGE MAKERS AND NOT ONLY DO THEY FACILITATE CHANGE, THEY ALSO INSPIRE IT.

AMBASSADOR FOR CHANGE At only 22, Ntsako has an impressive resume, but what’s even more impressive is the way she lights up the room with her passion for positive change, for which she is a true ambassador, and her contributions to the Education Sector have changed lives by raising the quality of schooling for young South Africans. Driven by a desire to do good in the world, and not necessarily only make money, she proved her worth when she was selected to represent the learners of South Africa by the Human Rights Commission and presented a report on the right to basic education. This led to real change and 20 mobile classrooms. She spearheaded a documentary called ‘Schools That Work’ which identified real-world recipes for success to provide a learning resource to schools that were struggling. In 2019 she was invited to represent learners in Parliament at the State of the Nation address. She gets her motivation from her dad, who nurtured her love and inquisitiveness for education, which led her to spending her school holidays job shadowing at the Department of Basic Education. From there she studied Business to academically equip herself to reach her goals and objectives. One of her passions is the importance of female representation – “When you see someone that you can relate to, who looks like you, has the same skin tone and hair like you, you feel, I am a seed and this is fertile ground where I can grow”. While Ntsako is only just getting started, she has already made positive change in education. So what does the future hold? In the next two years she plans to launch two new businesses, and in the long run, she wants to create better ways of living and improve hope for the future - in fact, she has even been asked if she wants to be president – so here’s hoping – watch this space.

NTSAKO MHLANGA AWARD-WINNING SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR FROM JOHANNESBURG

LEADING CHANGE FOR HUMANITY Driven by the allure of the unknown and the wonder of the night sky, Adriana has spent over a decade in academia and ultimately did her PhD in quantum biology. Through this, she realised that humans are a long way off from understanding what life is. She believes that an important step to figuring this out would be to find examples of life beyond Earth. So, she decided to focus on exploration beyond Earth. In 2019, she founded Proudly Human, to take up the challenge of developing solutions to live off-world, while applying the knowledge to improving humanity.

“Our population is skyrocketing, our society is consuming more resources, and yet we live on a finite planet that is buckling under the strain. Climate change, extinctions, pandemics, inequality and conflict are some of the results.” But despite these earthly challenges, she also believes that there is a lot to be excited about, things like connectivity and data that allow us to share ideas with people anywhere on the planet, the space industry which had three successful missions to Mars this year and the possibility of humans travelling to Mars this decade. She wants to apply the strategies for living in extreme off-world conditions to improve standards of living for people living in harsh conditions on Earth. See you on Mars Adriana!

Tumi didn’t grow up wanting to become one of South Africa’s first female Commercial Pilots, but an opportunity to job shadow at SAA inspired her at the age of 16 to dream big despite zero female representation. Tumi has been relentless in her pursuit of change, even when her High School Principal told her “You will never become a pilot” she kept going. She applied for an internship and beat out 40 other candidates to get in. Her mom joined a stokvel to pay for her studies. Flight school runs on a pay-as-you-go basis totally at over R300 000, so every time money ran out, Tumi’s training was grounded. She was also the only female. But that didn’t set Tumi back, she took to writing over 100 motivational letters to every brand she could think of to get a sponsorship. Only one brand replied, and still, she kept going. She raised money with a raffle, which got shut down by the National Lottery and still she kept on. While she worked a full-time job as a receptionist to help pay for flying school, a friend and colleague phoned 94.7 and put Tumi’s story forward for the Christmas Wish. This led to a large sponsorship and allowed her to complete her qualification and get to graduation where she was also awarded Commercial Pilot Student of the Year. She is one in less than 5% of female pilots in our country today. Tumi is leading change by showing girls that they can do whatever they want, even when all the odds are against them. She also gives back through her NPO, by bringing Aviation to Previously disadvantaged kids.

BOITUMELO (T UMI) K ATISI COMMERCIAL PILOT FROM SOWETO

CHANGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE Learning to code changed everything for Baratang Miya. She first experienced the vast digital divide and the disadvantage of coming from her township school to university to study Social Science – this misalignment led her to start her first company GirlHYPE. With many schools in South Africa severely under-resourced, GirlHYPE aims to give black students, specifically girls, access to computers and the internet to help them accelerate despite what they may have missed in school to empower them and excel in university. Why girls? Baratang noticed that girls had been left behind, often unable to focus on their education due to family responsibilities. She knew she had to do something to ensure that young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds had the opportunity to pursue careers in the tech industry, which make up 80% of the jobs today. So far, GirlHype has assisted thousands of girls in understanding Technology and its positive future. But Baratang hasn’t stopped there; she’s always felt that one of the biggest challenges in the tech industry is language. Since only 10% of South Africans speak English as their first language, she realised that it left most of the population unable to participate and promote themselves in the tech industry that predominantly uses technical terms in English. Inspired, she started a company called Vuza (meaning ‘to ask’) to teach digital skills in South African mother tongues. She will partner with big companies that publish technical texts and tertiary institutions to translate their curriculum into African languages. Because when people learn in their mother tongue, it’s much easier to switch to English. Changing the digital divide is an essential part of moving Africa forward, and it’s thanks to mavericks like Baratang Miya that the tables have started to turn, and girls can now turn their dreams into reality.

CHANGE THROUGH TRANSFORMATION Bongiwe is a female force to be reckoned with, both on and off the court, but she says her journey has been one of self-doubt, perseverance, and bravery. As a young girl in the small town of Hammarsdale, Bongiwe never imagined she would one day be a sports star. Her innate talent was discovered by chance when her school team needed a stand-in. Following that first moment on the netball court at age 16, she’s been on a quest to constantly push herself while inspiring women and girls like her. Netball has given her confidence and drive, and without the sport, her team, and her coaches, she believes she would not be where she is today as a person. Bongiwe also credits her family’s support, and her first coach for helping her achieve her dreams. She was selected to play for SA at the 2011 World Cup and has been part of the national team ever since. She was made vice-captain in 2013, and in 2016 became the Spar Proteas Captain. She’s played for many years for clubs in the UK but today works as a Netball Manager and Coach at UJ while continuing her Captainship and training. One of her passions has been to work towards transformation in our country through the Mentorship Workshops she runs, providing support for girls to help them stay active in sport and school. Today she gives back through her organisation, Bongiwe Msomi Legacy Projects, giving hope of a better tomorrow through funding, time and support for girls to play netball and better their lives at no cost.

CHANGING FEMALE NORMS Karthy started playing rugby 10 years ago and has never stopped since. She didn’t dream of pursuing a professional career in the sport, but through courage and commitment, she just kept going and is now captain of the Sharks Women’s Rugby team and a Springbok player. With women in rugby not receiving as much exposure as their male colleagues, not many women see rugby as a female sport. And due to the lack of financial support within female rugby, even Karthy works a full-time job in IT. Karthy loves what she does, but it takes discipline. She achieves it by eating healthily and hitting the gym at least 5 times a week while also taking care of her mental health and self-care by facing self-doubt, never being afraid to fail, and having time for family. She aims to continue to learn and progress as both a player and a leader. She finds inspiration from her fellow female players and her coaches and loves mentoring younger players. Sharks women are leading change in the sport by giving back to their home communities by playing games close to communities to connect directly with fans and inspire young girls. This includes special programmes to expose formal female rugby to underprivileged communities to drive change. She encourages young women to live their dreams, have self-confidence, and work hard no matter their background.

SHARKS RUGBY WOMEN’S CAPTAIN

If Karthy could change, fix or solve one thing in South Africa right now, she’d empower more young girls who come from underprivileged communities like hers. She grew up in KwaMashu, Durban – a community known for violence. When she became a rugby player, she realised that she could inspire and bring change to her community. Next on the radar for this young star is to make the 2022 Springbok squad for the Rugby World Cup, and we can’t wait to see her on the field.

CHANGING YOUTH EMPOWERMENT Possessing a Bachelors degree from Wits University and a Masters degree, along with years of blue-chip company experience with a background in Human Resources, it’s no wonder that Juliet Mhango grips attention when she speaks. A three-time winner of the Corporate Citizenship at the Standard Bank Top Women Awards, her passion lies in her love of working with people, developing them and a drive to make a difference: “Upskilling people, leadership development and coaching – all of these things talk to my purpose. I want to make a difference when I get into any organisation, for the company overall, but most importantly for the people. People are what make an organisation – when you look at any company’s “secret sauce”, I believe it’s in the people.” Juliet also heads up the Cell C Take A Girl Child to Work Day Programme, which has been around for 19 years. She strives to keep the vision pure to the original objective of addressing gender inequalities in our society. Cell C wants to expose girls to the workplace, especially in underprivileged communities, where access to an understanding of the corporate world, the opportunities and the different career streams, and female role models are limited. The initiative has made a massive impact, with over 1,5 million girls having participated and hundreds of companies joining forces in this movement to empower young women. Despite Covid-19, no one gave up; the programme has been successfully adapted to a virtual platform. Juliet is also encouraging the need for boys in the programme because she believes in finding true gender equality, inclusivity matters. Boy children are now being included and nurtured to learn the skills of positive masculinity. Cell C and Juliet’s ambition is to create youth employment, making change by addressing societal issues, including the digital divide. Juliet’s team runs projects that go into rural communities and empower them with the tools and means to be digitally included, like an uncapped internet connection for e-learning and tables for healthcare centres. Juliet’s top 3 life lessons are to have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, believe in yourself and your dreams, and always have courage. What’s next? Continue making a difference in the Human Capital space, achieving a PhD, and continue youth empowerment, upskilling, access, and employment creation.
