WHAT HAVE I BEEN UP TO SINCE GRADUATION ? MEDLIFE

THE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND

The day after graduation I was on my way to Riobamba, the base for our medical brigade in the Andes. I prepared for this trip during the semester, studying medical spanish and some of the issues surrounding sustainable medicine and volunteer work in developing countries. With the help of local doctors, we created general medicine, dentistry, gynecology, and pharmacy stations. After working closely with the dentist, I was diagnosing patients, filling cavities, and comforting children. I spent three days in a hole with locals, digging a septic tank three meters deep. I discovered heart abnormalities and helped the doctor speak to a stunned patient to work out how she could get to a hospital. Every day we got on the bus feeling simultaneously heartbroken, strong, helpless, and helpful. This experience It equipped me with a grounded awareness of the responsibilities, obstacles, and dynamics of community service. With an architectural degree and passion for humanitarian design, I will continue my journey by working on architectural projects with a commitment to accessibility and sustainability.

I currently volunteer with the Adventure Playground in the Berkeley Marina. Here, kids of all ages have the opportunity to pick up a hammer and build in a safe, free environment. It is truly an creative oasis, where the imagination rules all.

TRAVEL After two weeks of medical work, I strapped on my backback and set out to explore South America on my own for another month. I decompressed with a week of surfing on the coast. I learned to juggle, discovered ceviche, and befriended locals. I then made my way to Cusco, a city that offers endless exploration and beautiful architecture. I embarked on a four day Inca Jungle trek to Machu Picchu. I hiked, zip-lined, rafted, and biked my way through stunning landscapes, strung along incredible changes in altitude and climate. During any architecture student’s dream come true, I climbed the terraces of Machu Picchu while the sun rose. I returned to California with few full sketchbooks, a habit of going barefoot, a renewed comfort with my Spanish, and friends across the globe.

SPOKELAND I learn and volunteer at this bicycle co-op in Oakland, which is part of A Sustainable PLACE for living. I am working to expand my skills as a mechanic, builder, and sustainable community member.

BAMBOO DNA Bamboo DNA creates unique and sustainable bamboo structures. I joined the team in order to design and construct an innovative stage and shade structure for the music festival, LovEvolution.

MARKET RESEARCH After working for a few weeks as a temp at RentJuice, they have called me back to conduct market research at their San Francisco headquarters.

SKILLS As usual, I am attached to my camera and am constantly working to improve my skills as a photographer. In order to better prepare myself for architectural work, I am completing self-motivated advanced AutoCAD training program.

The onsite housing units were inspired by a fusion of standard shipping

Above are diagramatic steps in the conceptual development of the housing units.

Because the homes are located on the film school site, much consideration was given to gradients of privacy. The materiality of these dwellings serves as an indicator the function and social quality of each space. The cor-

Located at strategic points on the site, four shelters provide transportation for the site. SANKT ANNAE PLADS URBAN DESIGN

Located along Copenhagen’s harbor and within walking distance to several social and cultural hotspots, this plaza was a primary site for reinvention.

The rooftops on every street in Copenhagen are lined with dormers--protruding windows that reach out to capture every ray of light, and that provide opportunities for unique spaces and programatic elements. The dormers light up at night, signaling warmth and life of people inside each space.

In my concept, I combined the language of the docks lining the harbor with the dormers from the rooftops in order to create a new type of public, yet private space. Along the waters edge, these spaces mimic the city in a new light, with endless possibilities for urban activity.

SKETCHBOOK VISUAL JOURNALING

While at DIS I participated in a journaling course during which I used drawing as a tool for understanding spaces around me from the human scale to the urban.
