ABOUT Celine is a young design enthusiast who is in the midst of studying Interior Design at Glasgow School of Art in Singapore. She spent her 3 years studying Landscape Architecture in Temasek Polytechnic and now goes on to pursue her degree for Interior Design to pursue her passion for design. She dreams of being able to create a space for herself and her loved ones one day together with the drive of her passion. She is thankful to have been able to come this far today and hopes that her design journey would continue and be an unforgettable one. Cabinet magazine’s collage is down to earth because they emphasise on being simple and functional. It also reflects their workspace which is usually messy and it is filled with cabinets that contains many interesting collectables and antiques.

Aēsop, is an Australian skin care brand owned by Brazilian company Natura. In addition to skincare, Aesop also produces hair care, soaps and fragrance, a total of over 80 hair, skin and body care formulations. Aesop also uses its storefront as an incredible marketing tool as it does not advertise or offer discounts or sales.

INDIVIDUALITY After analyzing Aesop and the idea behind it, i decided to break down the similarities and differences to help me to come up with my design. I decided to use 2d (flat forms) to represent the similarities because there are known to the public but not seen, and 3d forms (spatial representation) to represent the differences like the design and materials used in every store which is more obvious to the public to notice.

This furniture design is a developemnt of the texile design. I started off by creating a frame with reference to the textile design and then adding in my concept which is to connect both the 2d and 3d modules ogether. I went on the enhance the ‘solid’ and ‘hollow’ areas by adding in the wire mesh and coiling the hollow areas of the 3d modules.

This furniture design made out of wire is meant to represent a shelving that i am designing for Aesop. Moving on from the previous concept of the 2d and 3d modules, i played with how the lines i create can form a ‘solid’ which allowed me to push my design further.

This furniture design made out of wood is a display shelving. I made use of the repetition of the 2d lines to create a hollow space which represents the 3d modules which acts as a shelve. The material palette chosen is also similar to Aesop.

This furniture design made out of wood is a improved version of the previous wooden shelving. I came up with the variations and sizes of the 2d and 3d module to enhance the shelves. The 2d modules are placed vertically now which forms a pop up space which serves as a pop up shelve. Heights and widths are also differentiated now which makes the pop up shelve more interesting and captivating for the viewers/ users.

I chose Geoffrey Bawa as my case study because just like Aesop, he uses sustainable materials and he does that by respecting the site and context which is very similar to the method that Aesop do when they design a new shop in a new place. I am also interested to find out how he blends in the interior and exterior by analyzing a few of his tropical modernism works and vernacular architecture. I believe this would help take a step further into designing the shop window for Aesop.

SHOP WINDOW The final outcome of the shop window is a development from the previous techniques used in the various conceptual furniture models and an enhancement with an inspiration of Geoffrey Bawa. I have incorporated the use osf sustainable materials and also using light as a way to connect the inside and the outside.

The hollow space in the shop window itself helps to bring in the light which would shine onto the products displayed there and also light up the store naturally during the day which would cut down the use of artficial light which links back to being sustainable. In addition, the 3d pop up spaces helps to entice the customers to come into the store as well.

This project taught me how useful it is to experiment with different materials to help with the development of the concept and also provided me with ideas to work on different materials for my furniture and shop window display. Incooperating a design practitioner into the project really helped me as well because i was able to looked into other design methods and incoporate it into my project to design for my client,

Aesop.

What defines a community and can we as an individual do our part in sustaining one? I personally love being around people and I am always finding new ways to involve myself in people oriented activities such as student camps in school or even taking part in events organized by the nearby community hub (Anchorvale community centre). Thus, being part of something no matter how small or big makes me feel like I am part of a community. In the next few pages, you will be looking at the private estate that I stay in and the facilities that are provided for all the residents. You might think ‘wow how nice it is to have everything in reach, a gym, a pool a clubhouse etc.!’ Well I couldn’t agree less, but you see, the problem with that is that we tend to take things for granted especially when everything is so accessible. Unlike staying in the public estate like the Ahmad family, where all of the facilities are shared among the other residences living in that same area and not all of them are so easily accessible. You should count yourself lucky if you have a convenient store (or as we like to call it ‘mama store’) or even a multi-purpose court right beneath your block. What kind of communities will this two different estates form?

Activities are usually planned by the condominium management and there are activities planned at least once or twice a month for the residents. This activites encourage the residents to bond together which shows the effort of sustaining a community despite every one living in their own private housing.

Shared spaces in a private community, basic facilities provided by the condominium for the residents to utilize. Communals spots like these are usually placed in the center of the entire space to encourage people to come down to interact with one another

Residents would be notified by latest events happening that they can attend with their family or friends. These activities are usually intended for a large group of people thus residents would have to have to go with one another which would encourage bonding between the residents and the community.

Shared spaces in a public community are found everywhere and there are always available for residents staying nearby to use which shows efficiency. I always love looking at the notice boards near the lifts of the resident blocks to discover new activities planned by the community, the best thing is that most of the time these events planned are free to attend!

forging communal bonds These are some of the spaces you will see under almost every hdb estate. Void decks and ‘mama shops’ are a popular site among the residents, espeically students who would come her to get their favourite ice-cream or candy. You might even get to find fresh foods available to whip up a meal at home too!

This sports wall is made up of the Bedok residents who were told to draw out their favourite sports to be placed into a mural and display on the walls at the void decks. The sports chosen were mostly sports that you would see people doing at the public spaces nearby these public housing.

This project allowed me to really understand what it means to really observe our surroudings and how difficult it was to capture the essence of a place through the lens of the camera. In addition, i struggled in the begining because this is the first time that i am doing a publication thus my book did not come out as expected but it allowed me to practice and i have really learnt a lot from it. Sustainability is such a huge topic, thus if i were able to continue to research on it, i am sure that i will be able to discover and uncover more stuffs around

my home and my neighbourhood.

In this model that i created to represent Cabinet, i wanted to show the possible connectivity between spaces. I wanted to use connectivity to represent Cabinet’s style of writing where they combine both formal and casual style of writing their journals and publications.

In this model that i created to represent AA Files, i wanted to emphasise on the use of the high ceilings in the office because it shows how old and how long the company has been around and high ceilings also reflects about the AA school as well. I also created the space in a rigid format to show the formality of the space and a space for creativity by playing with the heights and space ratio.

The collage done for AA Files shows the formality in the workspace with the high ceilings, dull colour tones, professional and expensive furnitures and also its connection to the students work from AA school. The staff that are working in AA Files are also required to dress professionally because they represent the image of AAFiles.

Headquarters: London, Architectural Association AA Files promote original and engaging writing on architecture and includes both AA school’s academic research and essays. Their form of writing is formal, professional and serious and they are all essay based writings.

The collage done for Apartamento reflects the style of Apartamento itself. Smart casual, knows all the designer brands, dicussion and interviewing based and a sense of homeliness. I have collated a series of open concept kind of a work space which i feel best describe their office space.

Headquarters: Barcelona Milan Apartamento is today’s most influential inspiring and honest interior magazine. Each publication has its own town and way of interviewing and it is a indispendsable resource for individuals who are passionate about the way they live.

The amenities, furnitures and materials selected for this office design helps toenhance the experience of ‘homeliness’ which is reflected as one of Apartamento’s identity as they study ‘the way they live’ in most of their publications.

The above perspective shows how the entire office space works with the private, semi-private and public spaces. The creative wall in the center helps to segregate the spaces but also connect them with its function which links back to my concept of creating connecting spaces and transforming them to become transformable spaces.

Reading corner and material library is designed into an ‘open concept’ so that the items are more easily accessible and it is placed closer to the discussion tables and personal office workspace

The creative wall in the middle helps to connect the workspace and the disucssion areas by incooporeating bothe similar elements on the walls itself. Discussion notes or drawing done during the meetings would be pinned up onto the wall for easier access to the workspace area which will ensure better efficiency. Interesting case studies , publications or articles can be pinned up as well to be shared with the entire offce

SPACES The overlapping spaces between the meeting area , pantry and library makes an ideal spot for a transformable space. I have converted the space into an open concept space where the users can get resources from the library at the same time have a discussion or just a quiet time to just sit back and relax.

These are both of the meeting rooms in the office space, the one on the left is more of a director’s office and also a personal private space for small discussions. The one of the right is a more relax and ‘homely’ room which would double up as a lounge when there are no meetings. These 2 rooms are ideal for Apartamento because they are always writing new stories and publications about people they interview and each interviewee would have different styles of interviewing. Thus, having 2 kinds of rooms would give them a choice instead of just sticking to one.

This project allowed me to experiment with various methods to learn about my client and also express their identity through the usage of model and collage making. I personally had fun translating the information gathered about the selected client to collages and models that helped me to develop my concepts and ideas to create an office space for them. I believe these various visual communication methods will help me in my future project and strenghten them.

Gene, 24 years old , flashpacker from Hongkong is coming to Singapore with 2 of his working friends from Zolima CityMag (Hongkong Magazine) for a business/ leisure trip to understand the food and culture in Singapore. He is a journalist from the magazine thus he and his friends would be touring around Singapore during the day and night to conduct site visits and to observe the night culture.

ADRIANCE HOUSE CASE STUDY Architect Adam kalkin combines 12 shipping containers inside a larger structure to create the adriance house in northern maine. The home uses the containers partially for structure, supporting a glazed glass structure that envelops the home. Using this container system will also help to segregate the spaces which creates private, semi-private and public spaces for communal activities which is what we plan to integrate into our hostel design. Our group selected to design a container designed hostel after analyzing Gene’s profile because of its flexibility, versatility, size and its function to manipulate spaces. We also wanted it to be a transformable space so it will be able to move and adapt to new space. Each container design would be design specifically to meet specific target audiences.

Pack and go provides free shuttle bus service that connects the individual hostels that travels from town districts to cultural districts to fun and relaxing places. Thus, it makes it very convenient for users to travel around to visit the different sites in Singapore or to use the other different facilities available in other hostels.

CHECK-IN SYSTEM In Pack and go, we strongly believe in a more efficient check-in system for our users. Thus, we implemented an automated self check-in machine and a self drop off luggaage to locker conveyor belt system which would help save time for the users and staff, therefore ensuring the security of the baggages.

Dorms are designed in a “pod” system, whereby the smaller pods are catered to smaller groups or single individuals while the queen size beds give more privacy. Pods are connected through a central lounge area where users able to have their own quiet time within that space.

Instead of a typical dorm with air-condition, this culture hostel provides the open concept, allowing natural ventilation to circulate and allows users to learn and experience what it is like to be living in Singapore in the olden days.

“t r an sformable space s” This hostel focuses on transformable spaces such as a bar to a movie screening space. This is transformed through the opening of container walls, providing either a platform or a shelter, creating this “open concept” and multi-purpose transformable space.

These containers are all stacked above each other to maximise space and each container serves a different purpose to ensure maximum privacy. The 2 containers shown here are facilities for the hostels, a spa and a sauna room.

To ensure maximum privacy, i have incoorporated movable partitions and curtains to block out views and noise. The number of available beds are lessen as well compared to a normal dormitory so that the place is more peaceful and quiet. Windows are available too at certain corners where natural lighting would enter to light up the place, cutting down of the use of the artificial lights. The natural light that enters the container helps to set the mood of the space too.

The dorms are specially designed in a way that there is maximum privacy and the ambience given off in the rooms soothes the mind. Movable partitions and curtains are installed beside the beds to enhance privacy, or simply keep them open if you are sharing the room with your friends.

This project has taught me how important it is to have a user centric design approach and how every single detail that the client likes or does not like, would affect the design outcome as a whole. I personally had fun doing this project, and coming up with a design based on a profile that my group and i came up with for Gene. The pain points that we came up with really helped us and guide us to shape our project and we were all very pleased with the design outcome. I hope to apply this user centric design approach to my future projects.

I chose Ettore Sottsass as the theme for my exhibition because i was interested to look into the postmodernism art as the style of art speaks the most to me and excites me to create more. I find the mixtures of the various colours and the contrasting, fun and playful design interesting to work with. I believe by studying about him and his company Memphis, iwould be able to learn and experiment with the different design ideas, types and methods that Memphis used to bring out the best in my works, thus helping me develop my own

I intend to create an exhibition about Ettore Sottsass and Memphis to share about post modernism art and its influence on design back then and now. I intend to bring the users through a journey starting from the introduction to Memphis, Pop Art and Art Deco, Memphis inspired design, Educating about Memphis and a place where the users would be able to create new art based on the experience at the Memphis themed exhibition where they will l e a r n , e x p lo r e a n d c r e at e .

I intend to break up the exhibition space into 5 allocated zones for the exhibition viewers to go through a journey. I designed it in a way that the viewers can move through the space as they choose cause there is not a fixed circulation in this space i have created. The exhibition is connected through the various themes, visual connections and also with the play in the heights and the way the items are displayed.

Sketches to showcase the idea of playing with the different angles and height so items displayed can be viewed differently. The individual exhibits are all angled in a way that the viewers will be able to view the items differently and also to connect the space via visual connections.

I started off with my spatial diagram to seperate the different zones and the placement of each artefact selected for this exhibition. CHANGING THE VIEWS HEIGHTS & VOIDS Memphis is against functionalism, standardisation and minimalism, thus they create designs that serves not only a function but speciafically design it to look aesthetically pleasing as well. They are interested in uncertainty, inconclusion and sensuality as well. Thus, to further enhance the Memphisthemed exhibition, i intend to design the place to suit the way the items are being placed so the viewers are able to see things in a different perspective (in different heights and angles through the voids i intend to create)

MODEL DESIGN PROCESS 1: 100 scale model to showcase the variation in heights for the different sections and the voids present in the partition walls to frame up the items and the items presented at their allocated spaces

In this model, i got the chance to experiment with the various heights and the place to cut out the voids in the partition so the items placed there can be viewed from differnet angles and places. The viewers would be enticed to enter the exhibit as well. The voids also help to connect the individual segments via visual connections. In addition, the voids act as a frame for the item and they are designed in a way that the entire item is not shown so that the viewers would be interested to find out what the exact item is and thus having the urge to enter the exhibit.

As seen from the perspective shown, the items are hidden behind the voids and the viewers are only able to view a part of the item. This helps to create suspense and excitement because there is a feeling of uncertainty which would thus make the viewer enter the exhibit to view item. The sense of uncertainty evoked in the viewer would allow them to come up with their own perception of the item and make imaginations of what it might be thus linking back to how Memphis would like the audience to percieve their designs.

In conclusion to this project, i believe that there is always more than meets the eye, and the value of an item is always justified by how the person views the item because everyone see things differently and there can be more than one judgement to an object. Perception vary from people to people. Different people perceive different things about the same situation. But more than that, we assign different meanings to what we perceive. And the meanings might change for a certain person. One might change one’s perspective or simply make things mean something else. Thus, i would say that my manifesto is how i percieve the different variation of a single space and its elements within and how i intend to connect them as a whole to design a space. An exmaple is how i connect the space not only via the human circulation, but also connecting the space with visual connections and also the playing of materials and heights to create a constant flow.

INTERIOR DESIGN The projects in this portfolio has allowed me to step out off my design boundaries and allowed me to explore and create more interesting designs. I have learnt and applied the various techniques that i learnt from class and incorporated those strategies into my designs as well. It has allowed me to be more confident in trying and experimenting new techniques that would help me with my designs and i am looking forward to discover and uncover more in the future. I believe it would help me shape not only my thinking but my designs as well.
