Paul’s craft was acting, his passion was auto racing, his love was his family and friends. But his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place. His commitment to philanthropy was clear — he used his influence, gave of his financial resources, and personally volunteered to advance humanitarian and social causes around the world. While Paul Newman was a Hollywood star of extraordinary celebrity and a person recognized for exceptional commitment and leadership for philanthropy, he lived his life as an ordinary person, which he always considered himself. He was a man of abundant good humor, generosity, and humility. - See more at: http://www.newmansown.com/ our-stories/#sthash.FsOruZIS.dpuf

In 1982, Newman’s Own started as a tiny boutique operation – parchment labels on elegant wine bottles that Paul Newman filled with his homemade salad dressing and gave to his neighbors as holiday gifts. He expected train wrecks along the way and, instead, got one astonishment followed by another. But in these thirty years, Paul Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation have given over $450 million to thousands of charities. How to account for this massive success? We haven’t the slightest idea but one thing we do know is we’re not stopping. Today, Newman’s Own produces over 200 individual products across 20 categories. Always great tasting, always top quality, just the way our founder, Paul Newman, insisted. We’ll always follow his vision for putting quality first.

HISTORY One Lombard Street is nominated at the local level for its association with master architect Willis Polk (1867-1924), one of San Francisco’s most influential architects from the 1890s through the 1920s. Designed in 1900 and built the following

Levi’s Plaza

year, One Lombard Street illustrates several principles of Polk’s architectural approach, including his devotion to Classical architecture and his belief in decorative restraint to achieve lasting beauty, and established some principles of design that Polk employed for other industrial buildings. The building illustrates a transitional period in industrial design, from one that abandoned pure function to one that sought balance between function and beauty. (http://ohp.parks.ca.gov/) 1 Lombard Street includes reserved parking spaces and two large public parking garages nearby. The former ice and cold storage warehouse is now one of San Francisco’s most attractive LEED certified office buildings. 2013-2014 OFFICE 2011-2013 Mixed Use 2008-2011 INDUSTRIAL

POPULATION

Sansome Residencial

The building is located at the middle area of Embarcadero Street. It is a comprehensive neighborhood with residencial, business, education, and tourism. As my observation, most population in this area is aged between 20 to 60. Residents at age 20 to 40 mainly live along Sansome street. Hult International Business School is located at Sansome Street. Students at age of 20’s will come to the building during the weekdays. Levi’s Plaza is the biggest business area around the location. People work here are from age 20 to 60 and most of them stay here during the business hours.

Case Study

Jaffa Port Market Located At Tel Aviv in Israel, Jaffa Port Market is a stunning and inspiring place to visit. This warehouse is waterfront and open to the port and the docks. “Make things as simple as possible, but not simpler.” is my understanding of the design of this market. Designer kept everything clean and organized which is a very organic concept. Cooperating with location, customers will feel both relaxing and exciting to shop and spend time in here. By locating right at the port persuade people to believe that all goods are just arrived in this market. Rustic interior makes people feel this market sells organic and honest goods. This market is also easy to navigate when you walk in it. Different categories have their own counters. There are six entrances in this square shaped market, not only maximize customers’ freedom in this building but also make this building a part of this neighborhood. I believe the interior design of this market successfully connects with the corporate brand to show people it is an affordable honest market with fresh organic foods. If there is anything to improve in this market, I think gray scale colors are too cold in here. Use other fresh colors will work better with the concept. For instance, tint and tone green.

Viet Vuong Co. Factory Office Renovation Location: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Architects in Charge: Vo Trong Nghia, Masaaki Iwamoto Project Architect: Kuniko Onishi The existing factory is a two-story steel building. The refurbishment is concentrated on two sections, one on the upper floor for administrative office and another small one on the ground floor for the reception. The reasone I love this renovation is how organized everything is. That represents the efficiency of this factory. Closed rooms, such as directors’ rooms and meeting rooms, are positioned along the aisles of the central office space. These rooms and the office are separated by transparent glass partitions, which showcase the company’s products and samples like shop windows. The use of contrast colors is very smart worm color for the office area and cool color of industrial area.

Concept

Gear Wheel

I choose gear wheel as the concept of this project. As we known, Newman’s Own company has three parts, including the retail that sells their products, the corporate that runs all retail stores, and the foundation that uses all profit in the charity. In my opinion all three parts work just like gear wheels. They work together and make the systerm work. It influences the whole systerm if any one part fails.

Concept

19

Concept leads our design process, therefor, a good concept is too important to compromise. I chose “Gear Wheels” as the concept of this building. The client has specific requests for the interior. With all the requirements, I think “Gear Wheels” is a good choice for this building.

13 Wood St is located at pacific heights. Pacific Heights is a neighborhood of San Francisco, California, which is known for the notable people who reside in the area. It is located in one of the most scenic and parklike settings in Northern California, offering panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco Bay, the Palace of Fine Arts, Alcatraz and the Presidio. Its location provides a temperate micro-climate that is clearer, but not always warmer, than many other areas in San Francisco.

Located At Tel Aviv in Israel, Jaffa Port Market is a stunning and inspiring place to visit.

Observe This Bookstore is located at Rio, Brazil. Aiva bookstore is a place for local residents to relax. Enter from a shopping mall, customers will see suspended shelves and showcases with highlight books. There are chairs and tables in every section. This place is a combination of library and bookstore. This store has a huge scale ceiling with at least 20 feet high. However, I don’t see enough signage for customers. I find some category signs on shelves along the wall are too small to recognize . Children books area is easy to notice. Rainbow color sits and quadrilateral book shelves indicate that this area is for children. I believe it could be better to build a navigation system using solid and dashed lines on the floor. Each line will connect with one giant grey column and form a sign on the column.

Concept

Music is the color of life. It is the universal language and emotional mood that can be created between people from all over the world. The combination of melody and sound put together that creates every emotion we have such as love, excitement, and happiness. Music is the hidden power. Music is organic, free, exciting and affordable. It is also a way of relaxing. Using music as a concept will allow us to create a space for everyone and a smooth transition. Our goal is to creat a calming and soothing atmosphere for people to gather and enjoy their time, a place where you can relax and enjoy good foods and company.

My design approach of this concept is to use different shapes and forms to imitate the rhythm of music. For example, curve shapes reminds people the rhythm. Elevated objects also provide clues in my concept. Besides using shapes and forms, I keep the main color in the interior black and white. With the high contrast of colors, customers will have a very strong impression of the design.
