STRENGTH & CONDITIONING The Gold Dome is equipped with a newly renovated strength and conditioning weight room that is available to all athletic teams. The facility is located on the upper level of the arena.

WILHITE MEDIA ROOM The Donnie Wilhite Media Room is commonly used as a meeting and film room, study hall room, and a media room for events and press conferences held at the Gold Dome. The 32 capacity stadium-seated room is designed with a newly renovated and highly equipped film projector and sophisticated computer software for complete game scouting purposes.

SPORTS MEDICINE The Centenary sports medicine facilities are located on the lower level of the Gold Dome. The room provides student-athletes with a facility that accomodates their needs on a medical basis. It houses a whirl pool, four tables and exercise equipment.

ASSISTANT COACH 2nd SEASON

VALIAO AT A GLANCE Jon Valiao begins his second year as an assistant coach for the Ladies volleyball program under head coach Jon Stenman. He will assist in all aspects of the game, including onfloor coaching.

In 2009, he was the head JV coach for Camden High School’s volleyball team, who produced a 16-3 overall record. Prior to that coaching stint, Valiao was the JV head coach and varsity assistant coach at Blythewood High School from 2006-08. His past experiences also include a two-year stay at Lugoff-Elgin High School as the head coach and Heathwood Hall Episcopal School as the JV head coach for two years. He brings collegiate level coaching experience to Centenary as a volunteer coach at Clemson University’s volleyball camp and Coker College. Valiao graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida in 2001 with a BS in Professional Aeronautics (Business Management). Also during his time at Embry-Riddle, Valiao served as a production controller and assistant engine manager in the US Air Force.

Valiao comes to Centenary from South Carolina where he served as a head coach and marketing director for the South Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club since 2003. In that role, Valiao was responsible for recruitment, administrating practices and training, as well as coaching.

The history of the Centenary athletics nickname “Gentlemen” is quite unique. First established in the fall of 1921 by then-Centenary President George Sexton, it seems the football team had been in a fight the previous game, and Sexton sat the team down before the next game and told the players, “...from now on, you will all act like Gentlemen.” points

With the majority of Centenary men also soldiers, the moniker “Gentlemen” or “Gents” was a logical choice. A tongue-in-cheek account that first mentioned the new nickname appeared in the 1923 Yoncopin (Centenary’s yearbook) in the football summary. “...there was some doubt on the eve of the first game. Reports from the Marshall (Texas) camp had them recruiting from the boiler factories and we were made to believe that the Marshall team was coming to Shreveport to mop-up with the ‘Gentlemen.’ Well, we put on our best manners, but just couldn’t help running up a 77-0 score...” The nickname has stuck ever since and it was natural to call the women’s teams the “Ladies” when the school began women’s sports in the 1960’s. In December of 2007, the Centenary student body held a voting process in order to add an additional mascot to the traditional Ladies and Gents. Although Ladies and Gents remained the official nicknames of the Centenary athletics teams, Skeeter the Catahoula was chosen to provide an on-campus presence in the form of a true mascot. Unfortunately, in 2010-11, Skeeter passed away and Centenary chose to lay to rest the mascot as well.

Centenary College begins its membership in the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference July 1, 2011 after completing its tenure in the Division I Summit League on June 30. “The American Southwest Conference membership welcomes our newest member and looks forward to establishing spirited rivalries in athletics and collegial exchanges in academic endeavors,” ASC Commissioner Amy Carlton said. The College is in the NCAA Division III membership reclassifying process. “Centenary Athletics is thrilled about its membership in the American Southwest Conference, which will provide Lady and Gent student-athletes with a unique opportunity to embody the institution’s mission to live, lead, and learn, as well as the prospects to forge new legacies for this athletic department and their individual teams,” said Dr. William Broussard, Centenary Director of Athletics. With the addition of Centenary, the ASC returns to a 16-member level for the first time since the 2006-07 academic year. The roster of ASC institutions in 2011-12 also includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler and Texas Lutheran University.

Centenary College of Louisiana has fielded an athletic team in at least one sport since 1894, when the football team faced Louisiana State University. Centenary’s football squad was one of the best in the South in the first half of the 20th century, the high point being an undefeated 10-0 season in 1927.

Centenary produced professionals Conway Baker, Buddy Parker, and Cal Hubbard. Hubbard is a member of three halls of fame: Pro Football Hall of Fame, College Football Hall of Fame, and Baseball Hall of Fame. However, the poor oil economy in the area forced the discontinuation of the football program in 1947. The 1920s saw the establishment of the men’s basketball and baseball teams at Centenary. The basketball Gents have had 45 seasons with a .500 or better winning percentage, including the 2003-2004 campaign. From 1972 to 1976, Robert Parish dominated Centenary’s opponents, leading the Gents to an 87-21 record over that span. Parish still holds numerous Centenary records, including the single game scoring record (50 points vs. Lamar in 1972), the single season rebounding record (18.7 rpg in 1972-73), and the career record for most field goals made (1,034). Parish was drafted in the first round by the Golden State Warriors in 1976 and later, as part of arguably the greatest frontcourt in NBA history, won three NBA championships with the Boston Celtics in the 1980s. In September 2003, Parish was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame. With its 1,000-seat stadium, the baseball team is attracting top players to play for Centenary and top teams to play against the Gents. Thirty-seven players who put on the Centenary uniform have gone on to play professionally. In recent years, the Gents have hosted, Arkansas, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and LSU in Shreveport. In 1980 the Golf Magazine College Player of the Year did not come from a traditional power. Hal Sutton, a native of Shreveport who stayed home to attend Centenary, won that honor as well as the 1980 U.S. Amateur. Sutton has gone on to win two Players Championships, a PGA Championship, and a Tour Championship, as well as earn a spot on four U.S. Ryder Cup teams. In 2004, Sutton served as the Ryder Cup captain for the United States squad. Recently Centenary athletes have found their names at or near the top of the NCAA rankings. In 2000, women’s

soccer player Lara Brown led all Division I players in points per game and goals per game. Ronnie McCollum followed suit during the 2000-01 basketball season, leading the nation in scoring. Andrew Wisniewski picked up where McCollum left off, finishing in the top 20 in scoring and steals during the 2002-03 season. A 1998 graduate, Herb "Flight Time " Lang made his second appearance on reality television show, Amazing Race. The former Gent joined the Harlem Globetrotters following his college graduation and has been an instrumental face on the elite entertainment squad. Lang is most known for winning the 1998 NABC Slam Dunk Contest as a Gent. With the addition of men’s and w o m e n ’s s w i m m i n g i n 2 0 0 2 03, Centenary now sponsors 16 intercollegiate sports. Recent athletics highlights include the gymnastics team winning the 2004 USAG National Championship and the softball Ladies earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament in both the 2004 and 2005 seasons. In addition, Centenary athletes have won the Summit League’s prestigious Student Athlete of the Year award three times since joining the conference in the fall of 2003. Centenary has also been honored with the Summit League's annual Sportsmanship Award for the third time in 2009-10. In 2010-11, Centenary was presented with the Summit League's Top Academic Institution Award for the highest percentage of student-athletes maintaining a cumulative 3.000 over their career. July 2011 marked the end of the NCAA Division I era as Centenary began its membership in NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference.

Spiritual Development The Christian Leadership Center (CLC) is an ecumenical, faith-based program committed to creating opportunities for Christian leadership development through the intersection of faith and academy. The Center is dedicated to theological study, innovative leadership training, interreligious and interdenominational dialogue, issues of peace and justice, spiritual formation and Christian discipleship. Community Service For the past 3 years The Big Event has been a huge success for both the Centenary Community and for the adjacent Highland Neighborhood. With the help of many of you, this student led initiative has grown to be an important part of life at Centenary. Centenary staff, faculty, and students come together to help the surrounding community by cleaning yards, painting houses, and assisting in whatever way we can. Residence Life The Office of Residence Life and Housing is committed to enhancing student learning and personal growth. Centenary has five residence halls: Rotary, Cline, James, Sexton and Hardin Hall. All residence halls at Centenary include FREE laundry facilities, computer labs, vending machines, cable television outlets, a telephone jack for each resident, room furniture (including an extra-long single bed, chest of drawers, desk, and chair), closet(s), and free internet access via wired ethernet ports (or wireless) in each room.
