FORWARD:
The Third Century Campaign for Centenary College of Louisiana
Campus Transformation: Mickle Hall and the School of Health Sciences
MICKLE HALL TRANSFORMATION Building on strengths and successes in health-preparation programs, Centenary seeks to establish a School of Health Sciences led by a new Dean. The School will bring together the current baccalaureate programs, pre-professional pathways, and health-science partnerships, as well as new baccalaureate and masters programs that will attract prospective students and continue to serve current students. To appropriately house and provide the needed resources for the new School of Health Sciences, Mickle Hall, the beautiful historic home for the sciences at Centenary, will be transformed to include a Health Sciences Pavilion that accommodates flexible classroom environments, new state of the art laboratories, and a studio-format design that is optimal for discovery-based teaching which promotes student-centered learning. The transformed Mickle will also feature new infrastructure and an addition to the current facility to support laboratory and equipment enhancements and upgrades, qualifying the institution for additional grant support. Centenary College offers exemplary and widely recognized preparation for health careers. Centenary is proud that 94% of graduates applying to medical school since 2013 have been accepted and 100% of graduates applying for dental school since 2013 have been accepted. The College offers several undergraduate degrees that prepare students for health professions. Most often, these undergraduate students pursue a degree in Biology, but students may also choose to major in other programs including Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Neuroscience. Centenary also offers pre-professional preparation pathways for health careers including pre-allied health (physical therapy, physician assistant, etc.), pre-dentistry, pre-medicine, and pre-veterinary medicine. Biology is considered an anchor program at Centenary. Biology and pre-medicine are in the top three areas of interest for prospective students and both programs enroll students at an aboveaverage rate (both programs yield at 34% or higher, while the average yield for College programs is 24%). Biology accounts for, on average, 10% of credit hours generated at the College and 26% of baccalaureate degrees awarded.
PARTNERSHIPS In addition to the current course offerings and the anticipated renovation to Mickle Hall, Centenary has partnered with a number of excellent graduate programs to support students in their pursuit of a variety of health-related careers, including: •B aylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing: Students who complete a bachelor of science degree at Centenary, including all prerequisite courses required by Baylor, receive preferential admissions consideration over other non-Baylor students applying to the FastBacc Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. •E dward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine: Centenary students are eligible for a guaranteed interview at one of four VCOM campuses (including the VCOM-Louisiana campus in Monroe) for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program if they meet the general admission requirements for the medical college as well as a set of additional benchmarks. •L SU Health Shreveport School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP): This agreement creates a streamlined pathway for qualified students earning a B.S. or B.A. degree at Centenary to apply to the Master of Physician Assistant program, including a guaranteed interview for students who meet the requirements. Health Doctor of Medicine program: The agreement will guarantee an admission • LSU interview for the LSU Health Shreveport MD program for Centenary students who meet specific requirements, including a minimum 3.5 GPA and a minimum 504 MCAT score along with strong Centenary faculty recommendations. •N orthwestern State University College of Nursing: Through this agreement, qualifying Centenary students enjoy preferred admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Accelerated Curriculum (BAC). •U niversity of Louisiana Monroe College of Pharmacy: This Memorandum of Understanding guarantees Centenary students an interview to ULM’s College of Pharmacy competitive Pharm D. degree program if they have completed the required prerequisite courses and meet the minimum application requirements for the program. •T ulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine: The Public Health Early Access Program requires an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher. Partnership benefits include guaranteed admission and $25,000 Public Health Early Access Scholarship.
ENHANCING CENTENARY’S STRENGTHS Enhancing Centenary’s strengths in preparing students for careers in health-related fields and to address current and prospective student interest, including that of the College’s growing number of student athletes, the College has added a baccalaureate degree in Kinesiology. This program will prepare students for careers in athletic training, physical therapy, and occupational therapy and has the potential to partner with current programs across campus, including the newly implemented Sport Management major in the Frost School of Business. A major addition in this programming is a Masters in Athletic Training, for which groundwork and planning is currently underway. New science facilities will positively impact every Centenary student. The Centenary general education curriculum requires undergraduate students to complete two natural science courses with laboratories. Therefore, every first-time first-year Centenary student spends time in Mickle classrooms and labs. In fact, the Natural Sciences departments account for approximately 28% of annual student credit hours generated. Students report that facilities for their major is one of the most important factors in their college selection process. Facilities in the major are also the most important facilities for student retention and satisfaction. In Fall 2022, 28% of undergraduate declared majors at Centenary were in the Natural Sciences. Undergraduate degrees in the Natural Sciences account for 34%, on average, of the total Centenary degrees awarded over the past ten years. In the Natural Sciences, Centenary’s average admission yield is 25%; average yield for all programs is 24%. The graph shows the number of student applicants indicating an interest in a natural science program compared to the number of students enrolled from 20182022. Note the 25% increase in the number of applicants interested in programs in the Natural Sciences over the past five years.
IMPACT Increasing the College’s enrollment yield by 10% for applying students interested in the natural sciences and pre-health would result in approximately ten additional students and $215,000 in new student revenue. The College’s highest enrollment yield year was 2011 at 35 percent; Fall 2020 was 28 percent. Over this ten-year period, the average admit pool was 546 students. If we increased yield for the whole student body by 5% using the average application pool size, the College would add 27 new students and $584,000 in new student revenue.
Improved science facilities ensure that Centenary remains competitive with peer institutions. It’s important that the College continues to upgrade its science aesthetic and facilities as admission efforts overlap a number of peer and aspirational cohort institutions with new science buildings or science additions. In addition, an increased level of investment and commitment by the institution to its research and teaching laboratories enhances our ability to attract the best and brightest faculty. This exciting transformation toward a School of Health Science and the addition of the Health Sciences Pavilion will be a pivotal moment in the long history of Centenary and will build on the College’s strengths of educating superb scientists, educators, physicians, and other health and science professionals. A renewed Mickle Hall housing a new and dynamic School of Health Sciences will make a dramatic impact on the health services industry in the Shreveport-Bossier community.
