Dear Audience Member, Thank you for joining us to kick off the holiday season with three feel-good musicals that celebrate (and have some fun with) the art form. Bright Star, from Grammy® winners Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, has an Americana score, and a story powered by love and human connection. We’re lucky to have Carmen Cusack reprising her Tony®-nominated role at the Ahmanson Theatre along with the rest of a top-notch cast who are kicking off a tour we’re producing (see page 16 for more on this feat). We’re also lucky to have the extremely irreverent Something Rotten! at the Ahmanson. The story of a pair of Shakespeare’s contemporaries who are trying to write the world’s first musical, Something Rotten! is full of really funny references to theatre history. And of course there’s another musical in L.A. this month: Spamilton at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. (You really thought I’d use this space to mention another musical?) This is a show with a wild sense of humor about a place we love that takes itself too seriously most of the time: Broadway. I hope you’re not laughing too hard to catch all of Gerard Alessandrini’s genius lyrics (and check out our interview with him on page 12). You’re going to leave the theatre smiling.

An Astonishing Student Matinee for The Red Shoes 1,489 students and educators from 37 different school groups descended on the Ahmanson Theatre on September 26, 2017 for the Student Matinee of Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes, capping off an immersive educational experience that included professional development opportunities for teachers at Educator Conferences, Discovery Guides designed to help students enter the world of the production, and hands-on dance workshops led by professional dancers from Bourne’s company for select schools. As with all Student Matinees, tickets were free for students and educators, thanks in large part to the support of thousands of donors. Sir Matthew Bourne himself was in attendance and was perhaps in even more awe than the students, who were held rapt by the performance and gave the show a raucous standing ovation. “It was probably the best audience we’ve ever had for The Red Shoes, possibly the best audience we’ve ever had for any show ever,” said Bourne. “I think this had a lot to do with the preparation given and the care taken to help the young people to understand what it was they’d come to see, the themes of the piece.” It brought him back to his own formative artistic experience of watching The Red Shoes film as a teenager. “Looking at the students in the audience, I wondered, could this be the day where their life changes, as they see something they’ve never experienced before?” Photos by Ryan Miller/Capture Imaging.

Finding the Funny in Broadway’s Biggest Hit

An Interview with Spamilton Creator Gerard Alessandrini

recalled Gerard Alessandrini. “I saw the show and thought, ‘After 35 years of parodying all the other shows, I can’t let the biggest hit show in Broadway history get by me.’ At that point, I had no idea what I was going to make funny about it.” And thus Spamilton, which Alessandrini created, wrote, and directed, was born. Spamilton has been a hit in New York City and Chicago; now, it’s arrived in Los Angeles at the Kirk Douglas Theatre for a run that begins November 5, 2017. Alessandrini created the Off-Broadway revue Forbidden Broadway in 1982. He’d struck comic gold with his takes on songs from Phantom of the Opera and The Sound of Music to Mamma Mia! and Spring Awakening over the years. But he’d never seen anything quite like Hamilton. “It’s the biggest hit show I’ve experienced since I’ve been in New York,” said Alessandrini. “I’d never seen a show so lauded and revered by the media. It was everywhere you looked.” Alessandrini, like most everyone else, became a fan. But he wasn’t daunted by the show’s popularity or its historical, political, and musical significance. “The more sacred cow something is, the more you should parody it, and the funnier it’s going to be,” said Alessandrini. “The stuff that isn’t sacred cow is boring. You want stuff that’s lauded and informative and poetic and important. What’s not ripe for parody is The Producers; it already is parody. The more lauded and important Hamilton was, the better it was for us.”

Slightly more intimidating was the style, which is unlike the Sondheim/Rodgers & Hammerstein/ Andrew Lloyd Webber tunes Alessandrini is accustomed to spoofing. “It’s very contemporary in its writing,” said Alessandrini. “It’s not the milieu I was used to writing parodies for. I had to learn to write rap and swing and all the different types of music in Hamilton.” But with help from his partner, Glenn Bassett (who plays King George in Spamilton), Alessandrini figured it out. “It was like cracking a safe open,” he said. “Glenn showed me where the rhymes were in the rap—he sort of laid them out for me. Once I could see where Lin-Manuel Miranda’s rhymes fell and what the form was, I could slowly go through and try to spoof it.” In essence, he said, he was turning the lyrics and ideas of Hamilton “inside out.” Alessandrini also worked to make the comedy and parody of Spamilton as contemporary as the music. “I really feel comedy changes as much as fashion. It seems to change from year to year,” he said. “We’re in a period now where comedy is not as farcical as other eras but is broader in the verbal sense.” One liners have given way to comedic storytelling. “Instead of telling joke after

joke after joke, comics are telling their life story and getting jokes within that,” said Alessandrini. “That affected me, too, because in Spamilton I’m doing a through-line.” He added, “Comedy isn’t really dictated by the writer. It’s dictated by the audience. Who knows what comedy is? The audience will tell you if it’s funny or not.” Alessandrini is confident that Los Angeles audiences are going to get a lot of laughs out of Spamilton. “It’s going to be a very vibrant production,” he said, with a new cast “picked for their exuberance.” Plus, “people in

Los Angeles have great senses of humor. New Yorkers can be quite jaded. People in L.A. know how to enjoy life better, and everyone has a great sense of humor out there.” The Douglas is also the right theatre for this show. “It’s a theatre you can feel like you’re having a party at,” said Alessandrini, “and that’s what Spamilton is—a party.”

It also doesn’t hurt that Spamilton is running alongside the Los Angeles production of the show that inspired it. That said, “you don’t have to have seen Hamilton to enjoy Spamilton. You’ll laugh just as much,” said Alessandrini.

On a Thursday afternoon in September 2017, Kirsten Opstad’s fifth period theatre class at Culver City High School was on the move. To Pittsburgh’s Hill District, 1969. Then the late 1940s. Then the 1950s. And finally all the way back to 1904. Their guides were Center Theatre Group Teaching Artist Cecil Burroughs and legendary playwright August Wilson, both visiting the classroom—Burroughs in person and Wilson through his work— to introduce students to the August Wilson Monologue Competition.

ON THE MOVE WITH AUGUST WILSON This Fall, We Brought the Famous Playwright’s Monologues into Classrooms Across L.A.

The August Wilson Program is presented by the Center Theatre Group Affiliates, and also receives generous support from Center Theatre Group’s Corporate Circle, Joseph Drown Foundation, the Rosenthal Family Foundation, and Hope Landis Warner.

Over the past six years, hundreds of young people across Southern California have grown as actors and storytellers thanks to the August Wilson Monologue Competition. Participating high school students embark on an entirely free educational journey that includes workshops and auditions with theatre professionals—all while immersing themselves in Wilson’s life and world. This year, in an effort to encourage more students to participate, we sent Teaching Artists—all working actors—out into schools to bring Wilson’s words to life and give students a glimpse of what the Competition entails. “I discovered Wilson in high school from the play Fences, which put me on the path to pursue theatre,” said Center Theatre Group Director of Education Tyrone Davis in explaining the importance of bringing Wilson into classrooms. “When I discovered his work, it was my first time seeing my community onstage. I learned that theatre belonged to me as well.” That was also Burroughs’ goal in Opstad’s classroom. He opened his presentation with a very brief precis of Wilson’s life and his magnum opus, the 10 plays of The American Century Cycle, which chronicle the 20TH-century African-American experience. Then Burroughs announced that he’d be performing a monologue, “one that speaks to me and speaks to the struggle of the working man.” Instantly, Burroughs transformed himself into Sterling, a character from Wilson’s Two Trains Running who has just been released from jail and is looking for work. By the time he’d finished his monologue, the students had discovered one of the great joys of theatre and of Wilson’s work in particular: the thrill of recognition, of characters who talk and think and feel like we do. Then it was the students’ turn to perform a few more monologues—cold. Two students, back-to-back, read a monologue by Seven Guitars’ Red Carter in which he laments his inability to juggle seven girlfriends at once: “I tried to keep them separate and give them all a day of the week.” One young actor was jubilant, the other wistful; both got belly laughs from their peers. Two more students took on the part of Rose from Fences. Just before the bell rang, Burroughs made his more formal August Wilson Monologue Competition pitch: “It’s a great opportunity to see if this is something you’re interested in,” he told the students about performance and auditioning. “Get your feet wet!” For Burroughs, going into the classroom allows him to participate in “the great equalizer”—education. “The Monologue Competition opens kids’ eyes to new things and new experiences, and lets them know that there’s a whole world out there,” he said. Opstad, the classroom teacher, was thrilled to have him opening her students’ eyes. “I know that students respond differently to guests than to their regular teachers,” she said. “I thought it would be more meaningful if this opportunity was made known to them by people who know more about August Wilson and can speak to their experience as actors in a way that I can’t. And it was so cool because the students responded totally differently. Hands shot up to participate.”

hits the road ALMOST EVERY PERFORMANCE YOU SEE ONSTAGE AT CENTER THEATRE GROUP IS A COLLABORATION. And we’re not just talking about the obvious— the team of actors, writers, directors, producers, designers, and artisans who have come together for the show’s run. More often than not, the production you’re seeing took collaboration among theatre companies around the country (and even the world) that was carefully constructed and coordinated to make it possible for Los Angeles audiences to enjoy the best of the best of the art form. Center Theatre Group frequently partners with theatres around the country on co-productions. Recent partnerships include this summer’s King of the Yees at the Kirk Douglas Theatre (a World premiere co-production with the Goodman Theatre in Chicago), and our upcoming co-commissions with the Goodman, Second Stage in New York, and the Royal Court Theatre and National Theatre in London. We also partner regularly with local Los Angeles theatres,

including remounting recent shows through Block Party at the Douglas. But in fall 2016 and fall 2017, we embarked on a more unusual endeavor for a nonprofit regional theatre: producing our own small tours, first for Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge and now for Bright Star. “As the original producer of these tours, we don’t hand off the play to the next theatre,” said Center Theatre Group Producing Director Douglas C. Baker. “Instead, we remain the producer and employer of the show and its cast and crew. Doing so can help us defray the cost of producing a show, including production and rehearsal costs, while getting our brand out into the world.” After playing the Ahmanson, A View From The Bridge headed to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. “I stay in touch with colleagues scattered around the country who produce or present largescale work,” explained Baker. “Through those relationships, I discover we have a mutual interest in a show or artists. That’s where the kernel of an idea to tour a production begins.” In many cases, these shows might not make it beyond New York or Los Angeles otherwise. “Many of our partner theatres typically present national tours that are produced by New York or London commercial producers,” said Baker. “They know they can rely on Center Theatre Group to bring them a show that’s every bit as high-quality. And since we are producing, the artists are comfortable with the project proceeding, too.”

Producing tours also helps Center Theatre Group create and sustain long-term relationships with artists. Baker pointed to Caroline, or Change, which we remounted as a Center Theatre Group production at the Ahmanson in 2004 and then toured to the Curran after it closed on Broadway. Caroline, or Change was a continuation of book and lyrics writer Tony Kushner and director George C. Wolfe’s long histories at Center Theatre Group and also helped set the stage for composer Jeanine Tesori to return to the Ahmanson with Fun Home and the upcoming Soft Power. “It was challenging to produce, but a powerful, wonderful show,”

said Baker. “Had we not done it, it wouldn’t have been seen on this coast with a full-scale Broadway physical production and with original Broadway star Tonya Pinkins.” Baker also pointed to Neil Simon’s The Dinner Party, which had its World premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in 1999, as another example of a successful tour produced by Center Theatre Group. “It was a very popular show at the Taper with John Ritter and Henry Winkler,” said Baker. “I knew that Neil Simon’s shows had had successful pre-Broadway runs in Washington, D.C., and I knew the Kennedy Center needed a show. So I approached John and Henry about going to Washington, and I approached the Kennedy Center, and everyone said yes. So we toured the show to the Kennedy Center, and it was a big hit there. Neil Simon and his commercial producer hadn’t been planning to bring it to Broadway, but they saw the show was such a hit that they decided to take it to Broadway, and it ended up playing there for a year. To this day, whenever I run into Henry Winkler, as I did on an airplane recently, Henry smiles broadly when we reminisce about our Dinner Party journey.” While touring these shows bring a lot of benefits, they also involve a massive amount of work for the Center Theatre Group management, production, and finance teams. “We all have day jobs,” joked Baker about running three theatres in Los Angeles simultaneously, “and it’s not like we stop producing in Los Angeles while a show is on tour. It’s kind of like adding on another theatre. It really maxes out our resources and our staff.” At the end of the day, the most important people who benefit are audience members. “A View From The Bridge was Ivo van Hove’s first time on the West Coast,” said Baker. “And we’re very fortunate to be working on Bright Star with two more of the best artists in the world in Steve Martin and Edie Brickell.”

The Blue Ribbon Supports (and Enjoys) THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME Our engagement of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at the Ahmanson Theatre was generously supported in part by The Blue Ribbon, the premier women’s support organization of The Music Center. In honor of their contribution, The Blue Ribbon enjoyed a special night out at the show on September 10, 2017. The event was part of their Sampler Series, which gives members and their guests special opportunities to sample outstanding productions across The Music Center campus.

The evening began with dinner at The BoardRoom featuring a guest speaker offering a preview of the show and a glimpse at the work that goes on behind the scenes: Production Stage Manager C. Randall White. Then the group headed over to the Ahmanson Theatre, where they were greeted with seat gifts before the curtain rose. “The evening was filled with superb cuisine, creative libations, magnificent wine pairing, and laughter with friends,” said Marla Lefton, who co-chaired the dinner. “But the highlight was the performance. It was flawlessly executed.” Sampler Series Co-Chairs Ames Cushing and Judy Beckmen concurred. “We were thrilled to have an important Tony Award-winning play available to Blue Ribbon members,” they said. “Intense, thought-provoking, educational, poignant, beautifully acted, wonderful and creative staging…This was a major production with an important overall storyline.” Indeed, the choice of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the story of a teenager’s life-changing journey, was particularly appropriate for The Blue Ribbon, which has raised more than $74 million for The Music Center, its education programs, and its resident companies. Their annual Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival, designed specifically for fifth grade students, is an admissionfree program that has welcomed more than 800,000 children to The Music Center since 1970. “The Blue Ribbon believes in supporting all the performing arts organizations at The Music Center and we are committed to providing monetary support for arts education,” said Blue Ribbon President Jill Baldauf.

Center Theatre Group Partners With East West Players on

SOFT POWER Not only does this World premiere bring together two of the most well-respected artists in the American theatre for the first time, it also reunites Center Theatre Group and East West Players (EWP). Center Theatre Group last partnered with EWP in 2007 on our production of Hwang’s Yellow Face at the Taper. This time around, EWP will add Soft Power to their 2017/18 Season and will also collaborate with us on four Community Conversations leading up to the play’s premiere. Both Hwang and Tesori are recent Center Theatre Group collaborators. Taper audiences may remember Hwang’s 2002 Tony®-nominated revival of Flower Drum Song, while Ahmanson audiences are sure to recall our 2017 production of Tesori’s Tony-winning Fun Home. With Soft Power, the pair turn their eyes to East-meets-West musicals, China’s 21ST-century rise, and American politics. “When we started talking with our colleagues at East West Players about ways to collaborate,” said Michael Ritchie, Center Theatre Group’s Artistic Director, “we quickly realized that Soft Power was the perfect opportunity for us to continue a tradition of artistic partnership by bringing our audiences together once again for a unique new work from David Henry Hwang.” Telling a story that begins as a contemporary play before jumping 100 years into the future and exploding into a Chinese musical about present-day America, Soft Power is inspired by the West’s often ridiculously inauthentic portrayals of Asia in popular culture. It’s a subject perfect for our free Community Conversations program, which brings together local thought leaders to facilitate discussion about the themes and ideas in the plays on our stages. “With this production, our relationship with Center Theatre Group will continue to deepen as we initiate a series of joint Community Conversations on Asian American representation and storytelling,” said Snehal Desai, EWP’s Producing Artistic Director. Soft Power plays the Ahmanson May 3 – June 10, 2018. The four joint Community Conversations began on October 26, 2017, and continue on January 18, 2018, March 15, 2018, and June 5, 2018.

To add to the experience, Center Theatre Group will host a Student Share Celebration where selected schools will also have the chance to perform a musical number from their show onstage at the Mark Taper Forum for an audience of students, teachers, and family members.

Disney movies transcend generations. Grandparents, parents, and children have fallen in love with Snow White and her seven dwarves, have found a hero in Simba, a role model in Belle or Teanna, a mother in Mary Poppins.The songs from these movies are as beloved and unforgettable as the characters (we couldn’t forget Frozen if we tried). In 2010, Disney Theatrical Productions (responsible for such Broadway hits as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King) gave elementary schoolers a gift perhaps greater than the original films—the Disney Musicals in Schools Program, which helps build sustainable theatre programs in under-resourced public schools. This August, Center Theatre Group received a $100,000 grant from Disney to bring the Disney Musicals in Schools Program to the Los Angeles area for the next two years. Local public elementary schools will collaborate with Center Theatre Group on 17-week in-school residencies that will expose students and faculty members to the wide spectrum of skills that are developed when producing a piece of musical theatre. Participating schools will receive free performance rights to Disney KIDS Musicals like 101 Dalmatians and Aladdin, a variety of educational materials, and guidance from two Center Theatre Group Teaching Artists. The program will culminate in a 30-minute Disney KIDS Musical performance at their school.

“Following years of successfully collaborating with Disney to bring shows such as Mary Poppins, Aida, and Peter and the Starcatcher to Los Angeles, we are thrilled to become the newest partner in the Disney Musicals in Schools Program,” said Center Theatre Group Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact Leslie K. Johnson. “The program’s focus on building educators’ capacity to teach musical theatre aligns well with our commitment to supporting teachers as artists and instructional leaders in their own communities.”
