FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
WELCOME TO CENTER THEATRE GROUP Thank you for joining us as we continue our 2019/20 Season with works from some of the artists I admire most. John Leguizamo is a brilliant writer and actor, and I’m so happy that we’re presenting his funny, timely, very smart Latin History for Morons at the Ahmanson. The show sold out its first two runs on both coasts and wowed Broadway; I think Los Angeles audiences will agree that it strikes a perfect balance between pure fun and fascinating historical explanation. Everyone at the Ahmanson is going to leave laughing this month thanks not just to John Leguizamo but also Mike Birbiglia, one of our funniest storytellers. From stand-up comedy and radio to theatre, he is able to spin his life into hilarious, heartfelt narratives—no matter the subject. With The New One he’s tackling some daring material that is going to resonate with everyone. A razor-sharp screenwriter and a seasoned playwright whose characters and stories are always fascinating and never what you expected, Ethan Coen is a true renaissance artist. For those of you who have never experienced his work onstage, you’re in for quite a treat with A Play Is a Poem at the Taper. These five unique pieces are each excellent in their own right and come together to create an extraordinary evening. Center Theatre Group audiences have been blessed with some splendid Samuel Beckett performances over our last few seasons, and now we can add Bill Irwin in his own On Beckett to that list. Bill is one of our most dynamic and inventive artists, and here he explores his lifelong relationship with a master playwright—with his deep understanding of the prose and his deft feel for physical comedy—as no one else can. Enjoy the show, and come back soon.
Sincerely,
Michael Ritchie

IN REHEARSAL FOR THE RODRIGUEZES: A MARIACHI STORY
IN OUR FIRST STAFF TALK OF THE SEASON, USC Professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity David Román visited Center Theatre Group’s offices to give us some context, history, and background around John Leguizamo and Latin History for Morons before its run at the Ahmanson September 5 – October 20, 2019.
Rosalie Rodriguez is a mother, singer, violinist, Grammy winner, and a third generation mariachi musician. In her first solo theatre piece, which she presented as part of our Library Play Readings in Boyle Heights in September, Rosalie tells the story of her musical roots and lifts out of history the role the women in her family played in the traditionally male-dominated world of mariachi music.

IN THE THEATRE
THE NEW ONE AHMANSONTHEATRE OCT 23 – NOV 24, 2019 Mike Birbiglia arrives at the Ahmanson telling a new story in a new way with the same heart and humor we’ve come to expect. Lin-Manuel Miranda called The New One “as perfect a night as you’re gonna get.” Do not miss The New One. Some people say it’s his best one. (It was John Mulaney. Also Vogue.)
AUGUST WILSON’S JITNEY MARKTAPERFORUM NOV 22 – DEC 29, 2019 Set in the early 1970s, this richly textured play follows a group of men trying to eke out a living by driving unlicensed cabs, or jitneys. Directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, one of Wilson’s finest interpreters, this acclaimed production received six Tony nominations, winning Best Revival of a Play. ®

KIRKDOUGLASTHEATRE SEP 13 – OCT 27, 2019 Tony Award -winning actor Bill Irwin combines his renowned skills as a master clown and dramatic actor to explore a performer’s relationship to the works of Samuel Beckett. Irwin’s physical approach to the comic and tragic sides of Beckett’s writing allows audiences to experience his language in surprising new ways. ®

He’s regularly called a virtuoso, a master of his craft, and even a genius (per the MacArthur Foundation) and a clown prince (by no less than PBS). You’ve seen him in everything from TV shows like CSI and Sesame Street to his Tony Award -winning stints in plays like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Fool Moon (roles he reprised with Center Theatre Group). Bill Irwin is a multi-hyphenate artist and creator—and also exactly the right guide into the world and work of playwright Samuel Beckett, for newbies and longtime aficionados alike. ®
MAKES BECKET T PURE PLEASURE Irwin, who created and performs On Beckett at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, has appeared in four different versions of Waiting for Godot (alongside Robin Williams, Steve Martin, and Nathan Lane), adapted Beckett’s Texts for Nothing prose pieces for the stage, and met Beckett in Paris in the 1980s. But it’s his passion and playfulness above all that make On Beckett a pleasure for everyone in the theatre—himself included—for every single one of its 89 minutes.
“The part of the evening that I’ve perhaps thought most about is the first two and a half minutes,” said Irwin, “where it’s laid out what we’re up to— and I try to return to the question of why this stuff stays in my head, what kind of relationship I have to this language.” He added, “It’s all part of the mission when you step out and start one of these evenings: what does it feel like tonight, and what are they making of me tonight? And how can I connect with this audience, person to person, to start the evening off...?” The impetus for creating On Beckett was fairly simple: “I found I had this repository of Beckett stuff in my head. It was important to me, it wouldn’t go away, and I didn’t want it to go away. And I was looking for a way to share the place that this language has had in my noggin and in my life,” he explained. “It’s a coping mechanism as well as a celebration and an investigation of the
language. I’m looking for both. So I began to think about it as an evening, and an invitation to people to look at this language with me.” On Beckett “bounces back and forth between passages from Samuel Beckett’s work and personal reflections on his language,” Irwin said. “It’s a personal evening. To do one of Beckett’s plays is a certain kind of adventure, and I’ve done that. To do solo delivery, or recitation, of some of his prose is another particular kind of adventure.” On Beckett is something entirely different, and it draws on all of Irwin’s varied talents, including those he picked up in his training as a master clown. “I’m sort of pulling on my whole bag of shtick,” he said of his extremely physical performance. Although Irwin started out wondering if he had enough material, he soon ran into the opposite problem. “I like to look at new stuff. Sometimes I’ll think, ‘Oh, this should go in the evening’ because I’ll hit some stretch of Beckett’s writing—which by the way, is the most varied writing of any author I know,” he said, listing the many tones Beckett can take. Irwin’s enthusiasm is infectious. “But it needs to stay compact,” he added. All this is why, if you see On Beckett, you can’t help agreeing with Irwin on the play’s basic premise: “This guy’s voice, this writer’s voice, is one that’s going to last way into the future. People are going to be reading Beckett’s stuff and performing Beckett’s stuff the way they have Shakespeare’s. It’s coming to the center of the culture.”

STUDENT MATINEES SHOWCASE THE
Power of Representation “IF YOU DON’T SEE YOURSELF REPRESENTED OUTSIDE OF YOURSELF, YOU JUST FEEL F*CKING INVISIBLE,” explains John Leguizamo in Latin History for Morons (onstage at the Ahmanson September 5 – October 20, 2019). Though we’ve never said it in quite this way ourselves, that’s one of the central values of Center Theatre Group’s Student Matinee Program, which brings thousands of local students to our shows each year.
The 2019/2020 Student Matinee Season “is full of shows that demonstrate the power, for young people, of seeing people onstage who are like them,” said Center Theatre Group Director of Social Strategy, Impact and Innovation Leslie K. Johnson. “We hope this season will resonate deeply with the students of Los Angeles, and help them think about who they are.” The Student Matinee experience includes a pre-show educator conference, resource materials for educators and students, in-school visits from our teaching artists, and a post-show Q&A with cast and creative team members. At the center of it all is the students’ experience at the theatre. “We want to bring young people to shows where the content and theatrical styles are varied and sophisticated, and where they can hear stories that are deep and sometimes hard—and present rigorous ideas about the real world,” said Johnson. The season kicks off on October 17, 2019 with Latin History for Morons—and John Leguizamo couldn’t be more excited to “smuggle information” to Los Angeles students. Plus, student audiences “dig the dancing more than anybody else, and they dig the jokes,” he said. “It’s so great to turn them on to theatre. They all leave going, ‘I didn’t know theatre could be so much fun, so relatable.’” That is key for local teens; over 70% of the students we serve in this program identify as Latinx. Next up, on December 3 and 4, 2019, is August Wilson’s Jitney at the Taper. “As the Los Angeles home of the National August Wilson Monologue Competition, we have many students in our midst who are growing increasingly familiar with Wilson’s canon,” said Johnson. “Our youth understand, want, and need opportunities to explore Jitney’s themes of family, race, and changing communities.”

“EXPERIENCING AND MAKING ART ARE ESSENTIAL WAYS THAT YOUNG PEOPLE CAN EXPRESS THEMSELVES AND ENTER INTO THE IMPORTANT CIVIC DISCOURSE TAKING PLACE IN OUR COUNTRY.”
Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake Student Matinee will be at the Ahmanson on December 12, 2019, making this the third season in a row we are teaming up with Bourne and New Adventures. “We’ve enjoyed a rich collaboration with Matthew Bourne and the dancers in his company, who go out into our schools to lead pre-show workshops before the performance,” said Johnson. “We’re also excited to be sharing a story that we hope will speak to our LGBTQ+ students.” On February 11 and 12, 2020, we’re hosting two Student Matinee performances of Heidi Schreck’s What the Constitution Means to Me at the Taper. “This is such an opportunity for us to partner with educators to create more ways for young people to see and study theatre and to think about the big ideas it presents. Experiencing and making art are essential ways that young people can express themselves and enter into the important civic discourse taking place in our country,” she said. The final show of the season, on April 30, 2020 is Once on This Island at the Ahmanson. “It’s a beautiful celebration of life and love that also shares a message about connecting to our roots and figuring out where we belong,” said Johnson.

An Interview with the Creator and Star of The Last Ship Is there anything Sting can’t do? This winter, the renowned songwriter, musician, and actor will have all of his prodigious talents on display at the Ahmanson Theatre in The Last Ship, the musical he created and stars in, which is based on the story of the town where he grew up.
“I’m repaying a debt, if you like, to the community that raised me, that created me, that gave me the engine of my ambition—first of all, to escape. I didn’t want to work in the shipyard,” said Sting. “In hindsight, I realized I’d been given a gift. I’d been brought up in a very strong community”—Wallsend, on the coast of Northeastern England— “with an identity that was completely wrapped up in building ships, giant ships. The community was very proud of what they did. When that was taken away, the town was destroyed—in every way.” The Last Ship is set against that backdrop of swift and savage decline—and while it’s a personal story for Sting, it’s also very familiar. “This is something that’s happening all over the West. When industries close down, communities are bereft,” he said. “They don’t know what to do, what are they, how do they identify themselves? So it’s a universal theme and a universal malaise.” The show doesn’t offer solutions, but it does have a particular point of view. “This is not just limited to my town or limited to America. It’s everywhere,” said Sting. “It’s about human dignity—we’ve lost that sense of purpose, that sense of identity, that sense of community, that bond—that social bond. It’s not them and us. It’s just us, and we have to get back to that.” Another major, universal theme of the show is “the agency of women. Women are very important in this play,” said Sting. “We need more women in power. Men have messed it up, we really have. This is one of the main tropes of the play: it’s women who save the day.” In order to write this story, “I began to go back in my life to the environment that formed me, made me who I am. I started to revisit the people I’d known in that community, the people who worked in the shipyard, the people who were my neighbors, the people who were my friends,” recalled Sting. “I wanted to write a story about the richness and the value of community, the spirit of community.”

Sting will be playing a key person in that community at the Ahmanson. “He’s called Jackie White. He’s the foreman of the yard. He’s a very conflicted character because he’s loyal to the company that’s employed him since he was 14. He’s also loyal to his men who work in the shipyard and who are being royally shafted by the company. That split of loyalty is what ultimately destroys him,” said Sting. “I had no intention of being in the play myself until someone suggested it, and I’m so glad I did because I’m having the time of my life. I understand this character. His strengths, his weaknesses, his conflict actually coincide with some of mine, so that is where the sparks fly. It’s really a psychological exercise. It’s good therapy.” Once the curtain rises, Sting is just one member of an ensemble of 18 actors and eight musicians; it’s a big, Broadway musical, after all. “The production value of the show is extraordinary. It’s something you haven’t seen in the theatre before,” said Sting. “We launch a ship at the end of the show, and it just gets people out of their seats and—wow.”

Mike Birbiglia made his Broadway debut last fall with The New One, but he is probably already on your radar thanks to his Off-Broadway shows (including Sleepwalk with Me and My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend), his films (he wrote, directed, and starred in Don’t Think Twice and acted in features including Trainwreck and The Fault in Our Stars), his standup comedy, and radio (he’s a regular contributor on This American Life). His storytelling speaks for itself, but we couldn’t help asking him some questions about how The New One came to be, the journey it’s taken him on over the past few years, and why he’s baring (and selling) his heart to Los Angeles at the Ahmanson this month. Q. What was the very first spark that led to the creation of The New One? A. I had been reluctant to have a child basically my whole life, and then my wife and I decided to have a child. The first year was really hard, and I wrote in my journal about it a lot, but I wasn’t gonna talk about it onstage. And then we were at the Nantucket Film Festival with a film that my wife and I worked on called Don’t Think Twice. There was a jealousy-themed storytelling night, and my wife Jen said, “You should tell a story about how you’re jealous of Oona.” That’s our daughter. She was 14 months old at the time. And so I told a story about that and worked with Jen on that and then that broke the dam, and I started talking about all these feelings I had about the experience of having a child that are pretty taboo, and so that sort of formed the foundation of the whole entire show.
You move between comedy, theatre, prose, and TV/film as a creator; how do you know when a story is right for one medium versus another? It’s a good question. For example, I’m expanding the show right now into a book with Grand Central called The New One: Painfully True Stories from a Reluctant Dad, and that always made sense to me. As a matter of fact, even before I was thinking of this being a show, I thought this would be a good book, and I had the sense that it would help new parents understand how shocking the change of having a child is. And in terms of why do that as a book, I think books have the ability to really dive into the minutia and the specificity of what something felt like, smelled like, tasted like, in a way that is also a good thing to revisit. Books are things that I like to read and re-read over again. And then with Don’t Think Twice, for example, to me when I came up with that idea, I thought, it’s a movie about improv, and it could be in the theatre or it could be in film—those are the two logical places—but I thought it could be really interesting to capture true improv on film within the context of a storyline. Because I had never seen that done, and I was really excited about trying that.
“Theatre is in a lot of ways my favorite medium because it’s all of us in a room together at the same time, and no two nights are exactly the same.”
How has the piece changed and evolved since then? The biggest thing that changed is that when I was first workshopping material, it really resonated with people my age or older. It was getting big laughs out of the gate, so I thought, “This is it. I found it.” And then around that time I performed at a few colleges, and one night in particular I was performing at Princeton, and the material was fine, but it wasn’t nearly what it was like at theatres. I realized I needed to come up with a metaphor for this that brings people of all ages into this universe. I started talking about my relationship not with my daughter but with my couch, and without giving too much away, I built it out from there, and then it started connecting with people of all ages funnily enough.
What do you love about theatre in particular? Theatre is in a lot of ways my favorite medium because it’s all of us in a room together at the same time, and no two nights are exactly the same. Even if it’s a tight script, every performance is different, every audience is different, and it makes the show different. So I almost never describe two performances as even being similar. And increasingly PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P5

everyone is so isolated on their phones and tablets that I think theatre is one of these final communal art forms that we have. What was the biggest surprise about doing this show on Broadway? I don’t know; I don’t attach a lot of meaning to Broadway. It doesn’t mean anything to me. In the same sense that I’ve never wanted to make studio films, I’ve never wanted to make Broadway shows. I just want to make good things that make people laugh and make people feel something. I’ve never really had that sense of, “I want to make hits.” It was sort of this flukey thing where it just so happened that the story that I was telling about having a child intersected with the age group of people who buy tickets to Broadway. The exciting part about it was getting to Broadway, and having my peers be the people who are on Broadway. I went to Heidi Schreck’s show What the Constitution Means to Me, and she came to my show. I went to Rachel Chavkin’s show Hadestown, and she came to my show. And then I would sort of see them around at Broadway events. And so in that sense I feel like it’s not about what street you’re on as much as what season you’re in, what shows are in that season, who is in the community. Because I think so much of art is about community. Can you tell us a bit about the role your wife’s poetry plays in The New One? It’s huge because when I started writing the show, I would ask Jen how she felt about different milestones, Oona’s first steps or when she was crawling or speaking for the first time. And she would say, “Well, I wrote this poem about that.” And I would look at the poem. For example she has a poem called “An infant reaches”: An infant reaches for something (I don’t know what) pushes it farther away and cries in frustration each time she reaches without realizing she is crawling for the first time. She is like her father. And then I was like, well, I can’t say it better than that. So I’ll just put the poem in. And then it ended up becoming this interesting thing where the poems are sprinkled in, and it helps you understand the perspective of two different people raising a child, two different people witnessing the same events and experiencing them in two completely different ways, so in that sense the poetry’s essential.
How did Seth Barrish and Ira Glass help shape the material? In more ways than I can describe. Ira was definitely a huge champion for bringing multiple perspectives to the same story. Always finding Jen’s perspective, always finding my perspective, always digging deeper. I mean whenever I’ve worked with Ira on stories for This American Life, I’ll come to him with a story and I’ll say, “Hey what about this?”, and he’ll say, “That’s fine, but how did you really feel about this?” He’s always kind of digging for what’s the story behind the story behind the story. Really he’s digging for what’s the thing I’m least comfortable talking about. Something I always tell my fellow storytellers when they’re starting out is the things that you’re the least comfortable talking about, chances are they’re the most interesting things to talk about onstage. And in terms of Seth, this is the fourth solo show we’ve worked on together; he’s directed all four of my solo shows. He’s a brilliant dramaturge and director. There’s no one like him. He just has such a light touch. He’s not showy. He doesn’t make choices that are pointing out the director’s hand, which is my favorite kind of directing—what I would describe as invisible direction. Why are you excited to bring this piece to Los Angeles? I really didn’t want to bring the show to Los Angeles at all until I saw the Ahmanson Theatre. Last winter my wife and I brought our daughter to Manhattan Beach for a couple of months, and I mentioned possibly doing the Ahmanson, but I don’t think that’s what I want to do because my experience in Los Angeles has always been transactional and business-y, and it makes me very uncomfortable. I don’t like that part of it. It feels like everyone’s in show business, and I love the people in L.A., and I love the artists in L.A., but I don’t like feeling like I’m at work all the time. So I was reluctant to bring the show to L.A., but then they invited me to come visit the theatre last winter, and I looked at the theatre and I thought, “This is the most spectacular theatre I’ve ever seen. I absolutely have to bring the show here.” And then they told me all about how active the subscribers are and how enthusiastic the theatre patrons are, and then I was sold. And so that’s how I came to L.A. It’s the absolute final stop on The New One tour, and so it’ll always hold a special place in my heart and that heart will be sold in the lobby for $49.95 after the show.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO CELEBRATE Ruben Santiago-Hudson Directs Jitney at the Taper L–R: Keith Randolph Smith and Harvy Blanks. Photo by Joan Marcus.
Ruben Santiago-Hudson describes August Wilson’s Jitney as “two parallel love stories.” “August writes about all the things that are innate in human nature—jealousy and nobility, love, deceit. Jitney has all of those things,” explained the actor, director, and writer, who last appeared at Center Theatre Group this past spring in Lackawanna Blues at the Taper. “But if you look at it from the outside, it looks like a bunch of men trying to hold onto their station.” Set in 1970s Pittsburgh, Jitney is on its face about the drivers at an unlicensed taxi cab (or jitney) station fighting against the forces of gentrification that threaten to shut them down. But there is much more to the story, which is why this new production, directed by Santiago-Hudson, resonated on Broadway, where it received six Tony Award nominations, winning Best Revival of a Play. Jitney is onstage at the Mark Taper Forum November 22 – December 29, 2019.
®
“Jitney is important to today’s audiences and yesterday’s audiences and tomorrow’s audiences. It’s the opportunity to see people of color wanting, needing, and achieving everything that’s called the American dream, people of color trying to attain the most simple of lives, and values—justice, liberty, freedom,” said Santiago-Hudson. The first love story is “between a father and a son who don’t know how to bring that love together.” The second
is “about two young people with a child who are trying to figure out how to make their love a successful love.” There are few people as intimately acquainted with Wilson’s work as Santiago-Hudson, who acted in Wilson’s Seven Guitars and Gem of the Ocean, winning the Tony for his performance in Seven Guitars. He was also a friend. Weeks before Wilson died, Santiago-Hudson asked if he could be the person to bring Jitney to Broadway—the only remaining work in Wilson’s magisterial 10-play American Century Cycle that had yet to be performed on the Great White Way. “August Wilson accomplished things that no other writer in America has ever accomplished,” said Santiago-Hudson. “He wrote 10 plays, and all of them went to Broadway. Now there are writers who’ve written 10 times as many plays, five times as many plays. But has every one gone to Broadway?” Wilson is “batting 1.000,” said SantiagoHudson. “That in itself is monumental.” So is the work itself. “I don’t think there’s been a whole lot of opportunities for people of color, African American people—people from African descent in America— to be celebrated in such a fullness,” said Santiago-Hudson. “And August’s writing always instills a completeness in human beings, even though they’re in a struggle. They still have nobility. They still have dignity. Rarely do we get to celebrate in that way. And August gives you that opportunity every time.”
