Dear Audience Member, Thank you for joining our Block Party at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Just in its second year, Block Party is already a favorite tradition for Center Theatre Group. We cherish the opportunity to work alongside others in the Los Angeles theatre community and look forward to continuing to learn, share, and experience with our colleagues by presenting these three vastly different productions of exceptional caliber from three excellent companies. Playwrights’ Arena, Critical Mass Performance Group, and Celebration Theatre have distinctive missions and styles, but they—and we— have one thing in common: we all call Los Angeles home. With over 250 theatre companies, this city has more theatres per capita than any other metropolitan area. We have the most talented writers, actors, and directors in the world. Los Angeles has the resources and Los Angeles theatres have the ambition to make our town a global theatre destination. Block Party is designed to help move us a little bit closer to this goal. If you like what you see onstage at the Douglas today, please consider coming back for another Block Party production—and checking out a theatre you haven’t been to before. A global theatre destination isn’t possible without the support of a local audience of champions. I hope you count yourself among them.
Sincerely,
Michael Ritchie

AROUND CENTER THEATRE GROUP OUR PARTNERS AT SECOND STAGE LIGHT UP BROADWAY! Our co-commissioning partners at Second Stage Theater in New York City celebrated the grand reopening of the Helen Hayes Theater on February 5, 2018. Second Stage will be presenting work by living American playwrights at Broadway’s newest house— including works from artists we are co-commissioning over the next 10 years thanks to the support of the Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative.
Student Art at the Douglas A group of 20 students at the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA) at Culver City High School created original artworks—now on display in the Douglas lobby—inspired by the subject and format of Question 27, Question 28 by Chay Yew, which was part of this year’s Center Theatre Group Play Readings series in Boyle Heights. Question 27, Question 28 is based on transcripts, documents, personal testimonies, and interviews with Japanese American women who were interned during World War II. Students created new pieces of paper by shredding and blending old papers they found offensive. Center Theatre Group Teaching Artist Janne Larsen has been partnering with AVPA educator Kristine Hatanaka since 2010 to create visual arts explorations for students inspired by the work of Center Theatre Group and associated artists as part of the Front and Center Theatre Collaborative.

PLAYWRIGHTS ON FIRE
Center Theatre Group Launches the L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival: New Plays Forged in L.A.
QUICK: WHAT CITY IS HOME TO THE WORLD’S BEST, MOST DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF PLAYWRIGHTS? THE ANSWER IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY CLEAR: LOS ANGELES. “The level of talent of writers who live and work in L.A. is unmatched by, I would say, any city in the country at this time,” said Center Theatre Group Literary Manager & Artistic Engagement Strategist Joy Meads. “There’s no better place to live if you love playwrights, if you love new work, and if you support important new American voices.”
Indeed, Los Angeles playwrights are on fire and burning to have their work seen and heard more widely, which is why Center Theatre Group is launching the L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival: New Plays Forged in L.A. On June 23, 2018, we’re celebrating some of the freshest and most exciting voices and impulses in the modern American theatre with readings of three new plays by past Center Theatre Group L.A. Writers’ Workshop participants. The Festival marks the first public-facing component of our L.A. Writers’ Workshop, which has supported a group of gifted local playwrights in creating new plays annually since 2005. Each year a new cohort of seven playwrights gathers monthly to share their work with one another and receive developmental and dramaturgical assistance from Center Theatre Group staff. “We’re responding to an ongoing request from the writers who have been through the Workshop,” said Meads. “They’ve told us they’d like a space to share work that is closer to completion—to get to hear the response of an audience and learn from them, and use the platform Center Theatre Group has to help launch some of these works to production.” We sent a call out to playwrights for such works and received “a really great response, with dozens of plays from an incredible range of voices and stories.” A committee of the writers’
peers—fellow Workshop participants who had not submitted to the Festival—and members of Center Theatre Group artistic staff then had to choose three plays to feature. “Talking about the plays was a lot of fun—and narrowing them down was excruciating,” said Meads. Ultimately, they selected Zakiyyah Alexander’s How to Raise a Freeman, Dan O’Brien’s New Life, and Sylvan Oswald’s A Kind of Weather. The plays travel from the New York suburbs and Hollywood to Syria; they tackle race and gender, illness and war. All three writers are accomplished playwrights, the recipients of many prestigious awards and fellowships whose work has been produced around the country. They also all have had success in other media—television, performance pieces, web series, books, and more—while continuing to write for the stage. “Playwriting can be a lonely activity,” said Meads. “That’s particularly true in Los Angeles, where many playwrights write for the screen. Screenwriting is rewarding work, but most playwrights feel hungry for community with their tribe of theatre folk.” The L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival is designed to satiate that hunger and cultivate that community, with a pre-reading reception on Friday evening for Writers’ Workshop participants; three open-to-the-public readings at the Kirk Douglas Theatre on Saturday; and a post-reading celebration at the theatre for all on Saturday evening. “This is one step toward finding a more active and robust way to be an ongoing creative home for Los Angeles playwrights. It’s another way to support the creation of compelling and ambitious new plays, and to showcase the excellence of local playwriting today.” The L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival receives support from the Time Warner Foundation.

Students and Educators, Welcome to the Working in Theatre Portal
How do you become a carpenter at a theatre company? What union does a box office staff belong to? When do most dancers get their big breaks? What kind of degree do you need to be a projection designer? For three years, the Center Theatre Group team has been quietly What sets the portal apart from other theatre career videos or populating a small corner of the internet with a veritable library websites is many fold. The emphasis is not on jobs that are overtly of theatre career resources for students that answer these visible—actor, playwright, and the like, although these are included— questions—and so much more. The project began as a video but rather on jobs that students may not realize exist. These include series featuring profiles of theatre professionals on the job. costume technicians, stage managers, and theatrical publicists. Now, students and educators all over the country have access Raising awareness of these career paths can help diversify the people to these videos and a variety of accompanying resources about in them and ensure that there is a deep pool of talent for theatres to the many career paths within the theatre arts. Welcome to the draw from. Center Theatre Group Working in Theatre portal. “For every four to six designers employed at the Mark Taper Forum, “The Working in Theatre portal is designed to help students, there are 30 to 40 technicians needed, but design programs rarely primarily high school and college students, start to think teach the craft of technical theatre,” said Schenkkan. “Because of this about the lifestyle they want to have in the arts. We and because there is so much demand for these types of jobs in the could not find that information anywhere else,” said Next commercial entertainment industry, we’re facing a shortage of many Generation Initiatives Director Camille Schenkkan, who runs theatre technicians, like costume drapers and technical directors, in the program along with Center Theatre Group’s workforce Los Angeles. The first step in filling the gap is giving young people development initiatives. “In training programs at the high school information about these jobs and the skills and knowledge they require.” and college level, there is a strong focus on craft, but studying THE WORKING IN THEATRE PORTAL IS ALSO ROOTED IN EQUITY, craft is very different from doing the actual work of it.” DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION. The entrance to the portal is a quiz designed to help students answer the question, “What’s your theatre career path?” “We are trying to serve a city of 4 million people and with that comes Questions about personality, artistic goals, and lifestyle lead great responsibility,” said Director of Education Tyrone Davis. “That students to three possible outcomes—independent artist, means making sure that whether a young person wants to be an actor, hybrid, or manager. Career examples are then provided for each stage manager, or costume designer, they know that theatre is a place personality type. A hybrid, for example, is a person who desires for them, theatre belongs to them, and there are more careers than the creativity as well as stability, and generally has a full- or partobvious ones.” time job with one organization while also taking on contract or But the portal is not just a service available to Los Angeles—it is independent work. THE 2018 RICHARD E. SHERWOOD AWARD GOES TO HANA S. KIM
Hana S. Kim loves the cultural cross-pollination of Los Angeles art and artists—which is one of the reasons why Center Theatre Group chose this talented live performance set and projection designer as our 2018 Richard E. Sherwood Award recipient.
“I FEEL LIKE LOS ANGELES HAS A VERY ENCOURAGING ATMOSPHERE OF CROSSOVER,” said Kim. “I keep getting
THIS ADVENTUROUS, EMERGING LIVE PERFORMANCE SET AND PROJECTION DESIGNER LOVES MERGING MEDIA AND CULTURES
surprised by the diversity of people and culture. There are always different things popping up, and I’m always getting exposed to new technology. The merging of different kinds of visual media—from film and theatre to virtual reality—feels like it’s still growing, still trying out different things. And that’s very exciting.” As a child growing up in Korea, Kim wanted to be a cartoonist; her interest in visual storytelling, and her father’s work as a film director, inspired her to begin her career in the world of film. She attended the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television intending to study film design and dip her toe into theatre, but then leaned heavily into the theatre side of the program. Now, her work sits at the intersection of theatre and film. “Being comfortable with a cinematic approach to theatre helped me get involved in more productions,” she said. “It felt like a combination of my old and new interests.” What keeps her in theatre is “the liveness of it and the communal experience,” she said.

Since 1996, the Sherwood Award has met a vital need in the Los Angeles theatre landscape to support emerging artists. Richard E. Sherwood— former president and chairman of the Center Theatre Group Board of Directors—was a patron of the arts with a special appreciation for emerging artists who are in the vanguard of theatre. The award was established as an endowed fund at Center Theatre Group by his family, friends, colleagues, and fellow board members, to honor Sherwood’s passionate commitment to theatre. Kim said she was “humbled” to be in the company of past Sherwood recipients whose work she has admired, including lighting designer Pablo Santiago, Miwa Matreyek of Cloud Eye Control, Lars Jan of Early Morning Opera, and costume designer Ann Closs-Farley. “I’m feeling challenged to do my best to fit in with the group,” said Kim. For now, that means working on a rock opera in San Francisco called Weightless based on part of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. “It’s got a lot of transformation and a lot of magic that needs to be solved,” said Kim. She’s hoping to make even more magic with her Sherwood Award monies, which she’s planning to invest in interactivity and virtual reality gear. She’s excited to try out new techniques and tricks on her upcoming projects and in the long-term, “to take on more larger-scale projects and work with a team. I’ve been working as more of a one-man band, and I want to meet more collaborators—that would be amazing.”

Why don’t we see more Asian Americans onscreen and onstage with accents that aren’t played for laughs? Is it OK for a Japanese actress to play Korean or Taiwanese? These were among the questions tackled on January 18, 2018 at a And why, if they live in New York City, Community Conversation titled “Asian American Representation: The Politics of Casting.” This was the second of four free events don’t the characters on Friends have co-hosted by Center Theatre Group and East West Players leading any friends who aren’t white? up to the World premiere of David Henry Hwang and Jeanine Tesori’s Soft Power at the Ahmanson Theatre May 3 – June 10, 2018. Soft Power is offering an opportunity for us to explore the questions, themes, and ideas that Hwang has grappled with throughout his career.
THE POLITICS OF CASTING (L–R) Panelists Phil Yu, Amy Hill, Alice Tuan, and Jeff Yang, and moderator Marcos Nájera. Photo by Ryan Miller/Capture Imaging.
One of panelist Amy Hill’s first big roles was on the short-lived mid1990s TV series All-American Girl, starring Margaret Cho. After that show failed, it took two decades for an Asian American family story to come back to primetime, with the 2015 premiere of Fresh Off the Boat. Panelist Jeff Yang, who co-hosts the Asian American current affairs podcast They Call Us Bruce, is the father of one of that show’s stars. Yang recalled a conversation with an executive before the show aired, who told him, “‘There are so many projects with Asian Americans I would love to make. We are hoping Fresh Off the Boat is a hit so we can make them.’ It was literally stating, we have great
ideas with great talent attached that we cannot make until somebody else is successful.” Yang added, “There’s
this conceptual challenge that Hollywood, that every industry, has to overcome: to just think of an Asian American in that space before they’re willing to actually open the door and make that happen.” One notable exception is Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which stars Filipino American Vincent Rodriguez III as the romantic lead, and on which Hill currently appears. The show’s creator grew up in Torrance, explained Hill, and the prom king and queen at her high school were both Asian Americans. “She wasn’t thinking, ‘I think this should be diverse.’ She was reflecting her experience,” said Hill. “These people creating shows, they don’t have any experience with people of color except for as maids and housekeepers and servers.” Nonetheless, panelist Phil Yu, who blogs as Angry Asian Man and co-hosts They Call Us Bruce with Yang, sees a great deal of progress in representation and conversation. “For a long time it felt like I was shouting into the void and I was just that guy on the Internet,” he said.
“It now seems like people are listening...and then you see change and reaction happening because of it.”
Soft Power Community Conversation Captures Asian American Representation Onstage and Onscreen Panelist Alice Tuan, a playwright, asked her fellow panelists if they share Yu’s optimism. “Do you all think that because there’s so much more demand for content and because people have a little more agency to choose...there’s going to be more and more diversity, in all genres?”
The verdict was unanimous: yes. Tuan herself is optimistic about the way a new generation of playwrights, including Lauren Yee (King of the Yees, Douglas 2017) and Young Jean Lee (Straight White Men. Douglas 2015) are tackling these questions. Her own work is changing, too. “I started writing because I wanted to write myself into the culture,” she said. “Now the project is writing myself so that I am the dominant culture.” Which isn’t to say it’s all been figured out. In the question-andanswer session that concluded the panel, an audience member asked about casting Asians in non-traditional roles. “I think it’s dangerous to approach something as, ‘What are the rules to this and when can we make the exception?’ It matters when it matters, and it doesn’t matter when it doesn’t,” said Yu. “You have to interrogate all of [the roles] individually. There’s no, ‘Here are the rules to casting, and here are the rules to casting Asian Americans.’” Which means conversations like this one will continue to be necessary. Join us for our next Community Conversation leading up to Soft Power: How Do We Sustain Community in America Today? on June 5, 2018. RSVP at CTGLA.org/CommunityConversations. November 1992 marked a titanic shift in American culture when Bill Clinton was elected president—and when Center Theatre Group produced the two parts of Tony Kushner’s landmark play, Angels in America, together for the first time at the Mark Taper Forum. The rest is history…in fact, a new oral history: Isaac Butler and Dan Kois’ recently published The World Only Spins Forward: The Ascent of Angels in America. We’re excited to share an excerpt here about that legendary Taper World premiere run, featuring Center Theatre Group Founding Artistic Director Gordon Davidson; actor Ron Leibman, who played Roy Cohn at the Taper and on Broadway, where he won a Tony Award®; former Associate Artistic Director Oskar Eustis, who co-directed Angels in America at the Taper; former Producing Artistic Director Robert Egan; and longtime Taper Production Manager Jonathan Barlow Lee.
AN ‘ANGEL’ TAKES FLIGHT AT THE TAPER An Excerpt from The World Only Spins Forward: The Ascent of Angels in America
By the time most of you read this, we will have elected a President and whatever the choice, enormous changes remain to be faced as we all move towards the millennium together. Theatre can be a courageous forum in which the major issues are confronted. In this time of reassessment and change (Perestroika, if you will), we feel particularly excited to be doing Tony Kushner’s play, Angels in America, A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. —Gordon Davidson, “From the Artistic Director,” in the program to the Mark Taper Forum production, 1992
Oskar Eustis: That incredible scene where Louis says Kaddish over Roy Cohn? The first night at the Taper, there was a disturbance in the audience, and I realized there were dozens of people saying the Kaddish along with Louis. It was so moving! People engaged on a level that I had never seen in a theatre piece. Ron Leibman: One of the things I did out there is I went to a lot— well, quite a few—hospices. The AIDS epidemic was flying. I spoke to a lot of guys who were dying. I learned a lot from listening to these guys. When we opened, the word got out. Guys with AIDS, different stages, they wanted to see the play. The theatre went out of its way to make sure they got seats. But they needed to sit, a lot of them, close, because the hearing was going, the eyesight was going. At curtain call we could see the first couple of rows. The lights would spill over. We could see the audience. The audience would generally give a standing ovation, but to see guys who could barely stand, giving us a standing ovation, you know, out of their wheelchairs. We were doing a play, yes, but it became something else. Robert Egan: There was such an explosion of response and support, gratitude, for this play. Continues on page 22

Tony Kushner: The second or third marathon performance was the day after the election of Clinton. And the next week, Time magazine’s cover was “Overturning the Reagan Era,” with a picture of Ronald Reagan upside down. On Time magazine! And that was back when people were still in awe of him. It was like seeing a picture of Jesus with, like, you know, bunny ears. That performance was like a rock concert—people were just—every Reagan joke got, you know, hours of applause and cheering, ’cause people were so excited that this nightmare was looking like it maybe was gonna start to turn around. Eustis: It was suddenly apparent that we were in a different universe, where you just hit the audience and you suddenly realize, Oh, the appetite for this is so much bigger than we thought. Leibman: I thought we’d have a gay audience, a Jewish audience, that would clear out in about a week. I had no idea.
Jonathan Barlow Lee: I think that was part of Gordon wanting to leave them wanting more. There was a lot of buzz about it. Gordon was trying to position it in a way to set the ball to be spiked to Broadway with as much vigor as possible. Kushner: It felt like the play had arrived at the right moment. And so some people said it didn’t matter if Part Two is a piece of garbage—this thing is going to Broadway. Former Public Theater Artistic Director JoAnne Akalaitis: The performance I attended, Frank Rich and Alex Witchel were there. It was like the czar and czarina of theatre culture coming to check it out. Leibman: Then I heard the Shuberts were coming, the Nederlanders were coming. I sort of got it. I realized it was going to have a life after Los Angeles. Jesus Christ, this thing is not going to close in one night! Kushner: Gordon Davidson and I had a long, long talk. He’s one of the founders of the regional theatre movement, and he said, “You don’t have a choice. You have to take this to Broadway.”
Eustis: The run of Angels at the Taper was four weeks, because we didn’t think anyone would want to see it. So it was followed by An Evening with Will Explore an expansive gallery of photos from the Rogers. We shut down Angels in order to have James Taper’s celebrated premiere of Angels in America at Whitmore play Will Rogers to half-empty houses! It CTGLA.org/Timeline. was a nightmare! Excerpted from The World Only Spins Forward: The Ascent of Angels in America by Isaac Butler and Dan Kois. Published by Bloomsburg USA. Portions of the book first appeared in Slate.

A NOTE ON ASWANGS BY PLAYWRIGHT BONI B. ALVAREZ Aswangs are essentially Filipino witches. Over the past few centuries, they have transformed from terrifying demonic monsters (with enormous bloodshot eyes, fangs, and wings) to contemporary human shapeshifters with an “evil” eye. Their special powers are activated at night. With the aid of the moon, they cause headaches and food poisoning, shapeshift into birds or pigs, feast on humans—or turn them into aswangs. According to the mythology, aswangs come from the Visayas and Mindanao islands. In these provincial areas of the Philippines, belief in aswangs still runs as strong as belief in a Roman Catholic God. You’ll hear gossip about who might be an aswang—they could be your neighbors, your friends, or even your family members.
