FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Welcome to Center Theatre Group If you’ve never been here before, I want to welcome you to what I hope will be a wonderful experience. For those of you returning…it’s nice to have you back here with us! At Center Theatre Group, we believe theatre creates an extraordinary connection between artists and audiences, and helps to create an energy that feeds a city, a culture, and a society. Theatre, at its best, reflects the community it serves. As one of the nation’s most influential nonprofit theatre companies, we proudly continue our 52-year tradition of using the art of theatre to broaden horizons and illuminate new perspectives. All three of this month’s shows do just that. Dear Evan Hansen is a Broadway phenomenon that has just launched its national tour to 50 cities around the country. We feel very lucky to be presenting this production—with beautiful music, a top-notch company, and an important message—in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre. Valley of the Heart is a masterful play from writer/director Luis Valdez, who returns to the Mark Taper Forum after last season’s triumphant revival of Zoot Suit. Set in what’s now Silicon Valley during World War II, it’s an epic love story and a moving reminder of a shameful chapter in American history. And at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, Quack is a brand-new play by the wonderfully talented playwright Eliza Clark. It is a play that began its life in our L.A. Writers’ Workshop, a program that supports a group of local playwrights in the creation of new works over the course of a year. It’s a very sharp, very funny piece of theatre that also adds to the bigger conversation we’re having right now about privilege and power in America. These three productions show you just a little bit of the breadth of the shows we present and produce at Center Theatre Group. And these are only a small fraction of our work, which also includes programs engaging artists, community members, and theatre’s next generation. If you are entertained, excited, or enlightened by your experience at the theatre, please consider coming a little deeper into the fold of the Center Theatre Group family by becoming a subscriber, making a tax-deductible donation to support our nonprofit mission, or just returning for more theatre. We’ll be happy to welcome you back! See you soon. Sincerely,
Michael Ritchie

AROUND CENTER THEATRE GROUP DONORS GO BACKSTAGE FOR AIN’T TOO PROUD How many trucks do you need to move a show from Washington, D.C. to L.A. to Toronto to Broadway? What did it take to install a treadmill onstage at the Ahmanson? How many actors can quick-change at once in a teeny, tiny backstage dressing area? Only members of the Center Theatre Group Inner Circle, whose donations support our nonprofit theatre company, know. Ain’t Too Proud—The Life and Times of The Temptations Stage Manager Jay Carey led an intrepid group of donors backstage on September 22, 2018 to find out how the theatre magic gets made. SWEAT COMMUNITY CONVERSATION: SURVIVING DAY TO DAY IN L.A. Our Community Conversations bring renowned experts, community opinion-makers, and cultural thought-leaders in dialogue about the context, issues, and ideas finding voice on our stages. With Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat onstage at the Taper depicting the struggles of a group of factory workers, we brought together (L–R) Chrysalis CEO Mark Loranger, USC sociologist Manuel Pastor, and SEIU California Executive Director Alma Hernández to talk with Chapman University theatre professor and moderator Jocelyn L. Buckner about the economic issues facing many Angelenos. Watch the conversation and read more at CTGLA.org/Blog.

OCT 17 – NOV 25 Photos by Cristi Burgos/CBGRAPHY.
Playwrights in Conversation Recently minted MacArthur “Genius” Dominique Morisseau (left), book writer of Ain’t Too Proud—The Life & Times of the Temptations, and Jocelyn Bioh (right), writer of School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play, came together for a free, special event on September 19, 2018 at Center Theatre Group’s rehearsal space at The Music Center Annex. They talked about what it takes for a new work to connect with a community and find its audience—and where they see theatre going next. Watch the discussion at Facebook.com/CTGLA.
STUDENTS TAKE A CRASH COURSE IN VALLEY OF THE HEART
OCT 30 – DEC 9
On three Wednesday evenings this fall, high school students worked with professional artists to dive into Valley of the Heart in a series of totally free workshops designed to introduce them to the elements that go into a professional production. Students got hands-on experience and instruction in costume, lighting, and scenic design, as well as acting and directing— then presented scenes and design concepts to family, friends, and peers.

STUDENT MATINEES KICK OFF WITH
BEFORE NOON ON THREE WEEKDAY MORNINGS IN SEPTEMBER, CENTER THEATRE GROUP’S KIRK DOUGLAS THEATRE WAS PACKED TO THE RAFTERS AND BUZZING WITH EXCITEMENT. Despite the early hour, the crowd was ready and the actors were pumped. And anyone standing at the back of the house would have been surprised and delighted to learn that many of the audience members in attendance were at their first professional production. They are among the thousands of young people from across Southern California who take part in our STUDENT MATINEE PROGRAM. Students and teachers enter the world of the production weeks before the performance with educator workshops, resource materials, and classroom visits from Center Theatre Group Teaching Artists. Interactive engagement activities at the theatre, a full performance, a post-show question-and-answer session with the cast and creatives, and follow-up activities in the classroom complete this immersive educational experience.
We loved bringing over 800 high school and middle school students and educators to School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Special Thanks
The Student Matinee Program also receives generous support from Diana Buckhantz & Vladimir & Araxia Buckhantz Foundation, Renee & Meyer Luskin, Deena & Edward Nahmias, Laura & James Rosenwald & Orinoco Foundation, the Artists & Educators Forum, and Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation. 10 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

A NEW PLAY DEBUTS IN BOYLE HEIGHTS
LUIS ALFARO’S
L.A. STORY COMES TO OUR LIBRARY READING SERIES AS A WORK-IN-PROGRESS The Mama of the Row team. Photo by Cristi Burgos/CBGRAPHY.
A TUESDAY AFTERNOON IN SEPTEMBER FOUND PLAYWRIGHT AND MacARTHUR “GENIUS” LUIS ALFARO REWRITING HIS NEWEST WORK IN AN AT ONCE UNLIKELY AND COMPLETELY APPROPRIATE SETTING: A LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY PARKING LOT IN BOYLE HEIGHTS. The play is Mama of the Row or Who Raised the Rent? (A Los Angeles Vaudeville of Tragic Proportions) A Displacement of Bertolt Brecht’s “Mother Courage and Her Children,” and it’s the story of a family living on the streets of Downtown L.A.’s Skid Row.
Mama of the Row is one of about two dozen new works currently under commission by Center Theatre Group. But unlike most of our commissions, it made its first public debut as part of our free Library Play Reading Series—just a few miles away from where the piece is set. And so Alfaro—whose works have appeared on stages around the world, and who was a longtime member of Center Theatre Group’s artistic staff—found himself doing rewrites in a Boyle Heights parking lot, surrounded by director Nancy Keystone, a small company of local actors and collaborators, and the three-woman, mariachi-inspired band La Victoria. The group had spent the previous week in your more typical regional theatre new play development setting: Center Theatre Group’s rehearsal rooms.
“It was so much fun, and I have to say part of the journey was that we created together,” said Alfaro. “It was so amazing that we were able to bring all the collaborators into the room, and that I was able to bring in scenes every day.” But with just moments before the reading was to take place, with Benjamin Franklin Library already packed with patrons of all ages there for the play— mostly local but at least one person had come from as far away as Simi Valley—Alfaro had realized he needed to add a new scene. After a quick rehearsal in the lot, followed by an introduction from Center Theatre Group Community Partnerships Director Jesus Reyes, the band began to play, and the actors took the floor. The group of elementary school-age girls in the front row stopped giggling, and the entire audience spent the next hour enraptured—laughing, gasping, and occasionally tearing up—by the struggles of Mama and her children. The next two evenings, the scene was similar at Malabar and Robert Louis Stevenson Libraries. For the past five years, these three libraries have hosted regular bilingual play readings—generally monthly, with a Spanish reading followed by an English reading—for a multigenerational audience Continues on page 14

Alfaro was equally appreciative of his audience. “I can’t imagine a more diverse audience. It was so cool—even having the little kids. It was fun to track it with the audience, to hear where they were plugging in and out,” said Alfaro. “You’re writing about a community and you have the community judge you and give you affirmation or criticism—it’s a kind of guide. The opportunity to have that kind
of community with you is very rare. It was all very positive and very fun. We got better and better every night. I did about 30 pages of changes through the second reading, and by Thursday, I thought we had gotten a rough draft of what we wanted.” Alfaro will continue to work on and refine Mama of the Row over the coming months with the continued support of Center Theatre Group. And the readings—which generally are presented in partnership with local Los Angeles theatre companies—will continue at the libraries. Special thanks to the California Arts Council for their support of our Library Play Reading Series.

of grandparents, parents, and children. “Some of our largest audiences turn out for Center Theatre Group’s plays,” said Benjamin Franklin Branch Senior Librarian Connie B. Topete. “There is so much enthusiasm when a play reading is held here. You can feel the excitement. Live theatre is not something that most people in Boyle Heights have access to, and the community is very appreciative of that fact.”

OSCAR WILDE AND JOAN DIDION SERVE AS MUSES FOR COMMISSIONED ARTISTS
GOB SQUAD & LARS JAN
Center Theatre Group’s 2018/2019 Season—which we’ve called our biggest ever— is in fact too big to be contained by our three stages. We’re excited to share two innovative, boundary-pushing works with Los Angeles audiences in partnership with theatres around town, featuring the work of commissioned artists: Gob Squad’s Creation (Pictures for Dorian) with REDCAT and Lars Jan’s The White Album with UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance. Both works were developed at Center Theatre Group with the support of a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Gob Squad is an arts collective based in England and Germany, while Jan lives and works in Los Angeles. “International and local are coming together through Off Center this season thanks to the Mellon grant,” said Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director Diane Rodriguez. “Gob Squad, a Berlin company who finds their muse in Los Angeles, would never have found their way here had we not been able to have the resources to bring them to L.A. and affect and impact their work. And on the other hand, Lars [Jan] is a local artist whom we’ve helped make a profile nationally and internationally.” Creation (Pictures for Dorian) was onstage at REDCAT October 18–21, 2018, and is inspired by the themes of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray: “beauty, aging, and the moral choices we all make,” explained Gob Squad. Gob Squad’s previous show with Center Theatre Group, Western Society (which made its U.S. premiere at REDCAT in 2014) was inspired by Venice Beach, and

the idea that this is where western society had ended up. For this new work, “they were obsessed with aging and beauty,” said Rodriguez. “And what better place than Los Angeles to explore that?” With the help of Center Theatre Group, they interviewed “people who are a lot older than us—senior citizens—and people who are lot younger than us—late teens, early 20s,” said Gob Squad. They focused on people who have spent time onstage and in the public eye (dancers, singers, magicians, models). “The exciting thing about this residency is meeting these people,” said Gob Squad. “How people are with their bodies and how they present themselves is very inspiring. The people we meet always bring an element of ‘place’ into the work; they represent Los Angeles.”
WORKS-IN-PROGRESS AT THE LAX FESTIVAL Three other L.A. artists received support and a platform from Center Theatre Group this fall thanks to a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. We partnered with the 2018 Los Angeles Exchange [LAX] Festival to present a Worksin-Progress Series featuring new theatre from Edgar Arceneaux, Tiffany Lytle, and Estela Garcia. The series was designed to provide a critical opportunity for local theatre artists to develop their work, with an emphasis on pieces that reflect and connect to the unique histories, environments, communities, issues, and artistic legacies that define our contemporary moment. Learn more at PerformancePractice.la.
They also appeared in the piece alongside Gob Squad, who have been performing around the world together for 25 years, and represent middle age. “It’s a lovely, emotional show about people in the middle who see their youth quickly fading and their age creeping up on them,” said Rodriguez. “Is there a better place? Is the middle better? Is it all good? They’re asking all of those questions.” The White Album is onstage at UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance April 5–7, 2019, and also finds inspiration from a seminal work of literature: Joan Didion’s essay about 1960s California. Jan first read the essay at 16, and “it’s the piece of writing I’ve returned to most in my life,” he said. “I used to feel like I was embracing the first sentence, ‘We tell ourselves stories in order to live,’ as a mantle under which I worked, and it sort of spoke to the power of artists and art to create meaning out of the incomprehensible world that surrounds us all. As I’ve aged, that sentence has taken on a different hue, and I’ve realized its double-edgedness, in the sense that, ‘We tell ourselves stories in order to live’ can be understood as, ‘We create illusions in order to get by.’” The White Album explores this double edge, as well as Jan’s relationship to the piece and to the audience, with two performances in one. “It features an audience that’s actually sitting in the theatre in the seats, and then there’s another smaller audience, which receives free tickets, that will be inside of a really unique soundsealed room onstage,” he explained. “That second audience is going to experience a different dramaturgy, a different storyline, a much more interactive experience, but Continues on page 66

Center Theatre Group Launches
FREE TICKETS
TO FIRST PREVIEW PERFORMANCES FOR PLAYGOERS 25 AND UNDER We’re excited to share a new initiative for young theatregoers that launched with the beginning of the 2018/19 Season. FreePlay invites Angelenos 25 and under to attend our first preview performances at the Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre for free. We want a new generation to be a part of the art, conversation, and change that starts on our stages, and to help us ensure the future of live theatre.
“CENTER THEATRE GROUP’S MISSION FOCUSES ON INTRODUCING THE LARGEST POSSIBLE AUDIENCES, FROM ALL ACROSS LOS ANGELES, TO THEATRE,” said Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. “Through programs like FreePlay, we are making a direct effort to welcome new theatregoers by lowering any perceived barriers of our organization or live theatre overall. It’s imperative that we strive to create a more vibrant Los Angeles with a stronger cultural fabric that supports such accessible experiences.”
FreePlay tickets are available by phone, online, and at the Center Theatre Group Box Office approximately two weeks before the performance, up until 30 minutes before showtime, pending availability. Reservations are free if made in-person at the box office. There will be a $5 per ticket handling fee to reserve online or by phone. FreePlay is part of a major effort to welcome new theatregoers through performances, events, and programs designed to communicate the accessibility of our organization and our art. Initiatives that introduce young people to theatre include Student Matinees, which offer free tickets and an immersive educational experience to thousands of students around Southern California each year; the Disney Musicals in Schools program, which helps elementary schools teach musical theatre; and workforce development programs that help students of all backgrounds learn about and begin their careers in the arts. New programs like our Community Conversations, which connect the art onstage to real-life issues, and our Spanish Open Caption performances, are also aimed at welcoming new faces at the theatre. In addition, we’ve recently launched subscriptions for teens—our Backstage Club—and for young people under 40—The Crew—to help build younger audiences. We’re excited to have FreePlay join this robust slate of programs, which has been core to the organization’s nonprofit mission since our founding. FreePlay has been an instant success, with demand so high for the first preview of School Girls at the Douglas (on September 2, 2018) that we made FreePlay tickets available to the second preview as well. We have reserved a block of FreePlay tickets to every Taper and Douglas production this season, which includes plays by Zoot Suit writer/director Luis Valdez, August: Osage County writer Tracy Letts, and A Doll’s House, Part Two writer Lucas Hnath. We are also planning to include select Ahmanson shows in the program.

GO BEHIND THE SCENES BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE
OUR ARTIST SERIES Explores the Inspiration and Craft that Gets the Art Onstage
The Center Theatre Group rehearsal rooms have been the site of many thrilling artistic breakthroughs over the past five decades, but audience members generally have had to use their imagination if they want to know what really happened there. Luckily for our patrons, we offer at least one opportunity to visit the room where it happens and get a glimpse behind the scenes for every production at the Mark Taper Forum. Before second Saturday matinee performances, our free, open-to-the-public Artist Series bring together artists and artisans—from playwrights, directors, and actors to designers and production crew members—with audiences for up-close conversations in the rehearsal rooms of The Music Center Annex. What today we call the Artist Series was founded in the 1970s by UC Santa Barbara theatre professors who wanted to bolster the interest of young theatregoers. They invited Southern California alumni and other subscribers to join them before the show for discussions about the work onstage, often with members of the creative team. After the matinee and before the evening performance, the group would gather again for a potluck dinner to which they invited the cast. Over the years, the potluck was dissolved, and Center Theatre Group took over the programming, inviting any audience member who wanted to attend.
Genni Klein has been attending the program since 1975. She recalled highlights including director Warner Shook giving a talk about The Kentucky Cycle and co-director Oskar Eustis discussing Angels in America, as well as more recent programs featuring Archduke and Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo playwright Rajiv Joseph. “They are absolutely wonderful. I have appreciated them very much,” said Klein of the discussions. The program “has given me some very interesting insight into certain pieces, particularly new works. It’s always interesting to hear somebody’s point of view on the artistic choices.” Subscribing for so long has also created community for Klein. “There are several people from that original program who still attend, and it’s a way we keep up with each other,” she added. “The Artist Series is another chance for us to highlight the caliber of artists we work with,” said Audience Engagement Director Tyrone Davis. “But more importantly, it’s a chance for our community— not just patrons but also students and people at home, who can listen to recordings of the conversations on our podcast—to find out about the creative spark behind the work, to deepen their engagement with the productions, and to be inspired by theatre in a new way.” The 2018/2019 Artist Series kicked off on September 8, 2018 with actor John Earl Jelks, who reprised his Broadway and Off-Broadway role in Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat at the Taper.

“Theatre is ultimately about building community— and exploring and sharing our human experiences,” said Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact Leslie K. Johnson. “What better way to do that than to bring together the two most important human elements of theatre—our artists and our audience—in intimate ‘get to know you’ conversations?”

THE MIX OF BUSINESS, ARTISTRY, AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY that comes with a creative career in theatre can be tricky to master, especially for young, emerging professionals. As part of our efforts to support an ever-growing and increasingly diverse theatre community in Los Angeles, Center Theatre Group hosted our first Workforce Readiness Symposium on September 22, 2018 at East Los Angeles College, our official higher education partner. More than a dozen colleges and universities were involved as planning partners for the event, and over 30 higher education institutions from across L.A. were represented among the educators and administrators who attended. The goal, explained Center Theatre Group Next Generation Initiatives Director Camille Schenkkan, was to provide a time and place for this group to gather and “have a robust conversation about the hard and soft skills students need to succeed in professional theatre.”

The event began with opening presentations from theatre artists, professors, career center representatives, and others, all focused on what theatre students need before graduation. Speakers included Celebration Theatre Co-Artistic Director Michael A. Sheppard, who spoke on representation and diversity, and Chapman University Assistant Professor of Theatre Studies Dr. Jocelyn L. Buckner, who provided a snapshot of the university’s senior theatre seminar. Playwright Luis Alfaro delivered a keynote reflecting on his experience as both a practicing artist and university educator. Representatives from Center Theatre Group provided an employer perspective, discussing hiring trends and fieldwide needs. Attendees also reviewed the results of the Southern California Theatre Alumni Survey, conducted by Center Theatre Group this summer, which asked local theatre alumni to weigh in on the career training they received, as well as what training would have been helpful to them as they embarked on their careers. FROM START TO FINISH, A HOME FOR NEW WORK
Playwright ELIZA CLARK and Director NEEL KELLER Discuss the Development of
A MAJOR PILLAR OF CENTER THEATRE GROUP’S MISSION IS TO FOSTER NEW PLAYS AND SUPPORT LOCAL PLAYWRIGHTS AT EVERY STEP OF THE PROCESS FROM CONCEPTION TO PRODUCTION. The ideal example is Quack, a World premiere onstage at the Kirk Douglas Theatre October 21 – November 18, 2018. Playwright Eliza Clark wrote the piece during her residency in the 2016/17 Center Theatre Group L.A. Writers’ Workshop. Just two years later, Clark is hard at work along with Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director and Quack director Neel Keller bringing the piece from script to stage. Clark explained that the beginnings of what would eventually become Quack began long before the Writers’ Workshop. “The play came out of an idea I had been mulling for a few years,” remembered Clark. “I wrote the first scene five years ago.” Though she had begun working on another piece for the Workshop—which brings together a cohort of local writers who each spend the year creating a new play—Clark found new inspiration to build off the old scene. “I’m interested in the wellness industry and was interested in writing a play about vaccines because I had just had a baby,” Clark explained, “and then the play became about something else.” At the end of the Workshop, professional actors come in to read the plays for the playwrights and Center Theatre Group Artistic staff. As Keller recalled, everyone was immediately intrigued by what they heard. “It was a joyous, happy thing to hear a play that was so funny, that was so dramatically alive,” he said. “I was fascinated by
how the scenes played out and how I never knew exactly what was going to happen next.” Almost immediately, Keller and other members of the Artistic staff conferred and offered to work with Clark on developing the play with an eye toward a production at the Douglas. Clark spent another year refining and developing the play further, drawing from even more inspiration and subject matter in the national news. Quack follows a medical talk show host who faces scrutiny and professional turmoil after a critical hit piece on him is published. “I had been thinking a lot about privilege and entitlement, and also the scary forces in our country that are coming out of the woodwork,” Clark said. “I was also thinking about what it meant to be a woman in the workplace—I think men and women are shamed differently. It just felt like I couldn’t write about anything else.” Throughout the year, Keller kept in close touch with Clark as the play was refined through a series of workshops and revisions. “Having the time to have those conversations, to learn about the play by hearing it at different stages and seeing where the writer’s going, was incredibly helpful,” explained Keller. “It is wonderful that Center Theatre Group can provide that sort of home base to writers.” Since the first reading, Center Theatre Group has held several more readings and workshops, offered dramaturgical support, and gotten feedback from Continues on page 63

EL TEATRO CAMPESINO. Founded in 1965 by American playwright Luis Valdez as a means of organizing the nation’s agricultural workers, El Teatro Campesino (ETC)—literally “the Farm Workers’ Theatre”—has been at the forefront of using theatre as an artistic generator of social change for 53 years now. From flatbed trucks to the Broadway stage, ETC built its reputation as the premier Chicano/Latino theatre
company during its first two decades of extensive touring. Traveling the world from its rural base in San Juan Bautista, CA, the company became world-renowned for its exuberant image-fueled work and music based productions that dynamically explore the cultural fusions of the continental Americas. Under the direction of its visionary founder, the company also developed “Theatre of the Sphere”— a theatrical training method based on the thought and culture of ancient America and built on the nexus between artistic excellence and community activism. ETC’s work has impacted and influenced several artists and cultural institutions with its aesthetic, acting technique, and narrative of Latinos’ pursuit of social justice in the United States and internationally. Zoot Suit Creator Luis Valdez Plants New Seeds at the Taper with Valley of the Heart IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE THAT LESS THAN A GENERATION AGO, CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA WAS AN AGRICULTURAL TOWN. Today, it is home to Apple Inc.’s headquarters—a vast, ring-shaped structure made of glass and steel—and one of the wealthiest cities in the country. Yet for playwright, director, and El Teatro Campesino founder Luis Valdez, Cupertino will always be known for the rich land that once grew an abundance of crops and fruit trees. “I remember it as the ‘Valley of the Heart’s Delight,’” said Valdez, who lived in the area shortly after World War II. “Back in the ’40s, no one knew it was going to become Silicon Valley.” As a child of Mexican farmworkers who had immigrated to California, Valdez grew up around intersecting cultures, which inevitably inspired his stories about America’s cultural diversity. His landmark play Zoot Suit reimagined Los Angeles’ 1942 Sleepy Lagoon trial—which unjustly convicted a group of young Latino men of murder—and the racially charged riots that followed. Zoot Suit made its World premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in 1978, just a few decades after the events it portrayed had taken place, and went on to become Broadway’s first Chicano play.
“I feel a sense of basic responsibility as a playwright born and raised in California to reflect [our] reality to the rest of the world,” Valdez said, “to say, ‘Look we’re all the same. We’ve all had our common struggles.’ I use the theatre not just to enlighten but to touch the hearts of people. If we can touch the heart, maybe we can do something to bring justice to our lives.” Valdez’s broad and highly celebrated body of work— which also encompasses films such as La Bamba and the screen adaptation of Zoot Suit—has not only contributed to greater representation of Latinos in entertainment but spurred a theatre movement, with a new generation of Latino theatre groups springing up on college campuses and in communities throughout the country since the 1970s. In honor of his accomplishments and historic cultural influence, Valdez has been awarded the Governor’s Award from the California Arts Council, the George Peabody Award for excellence in television, and the National Medal of the Arts from President Obama. Like Zoot Suit, his latest play, Valley of the Heart, uses California history as a jumping-off point to tell an important story. Its roots also lie in Valdez’s

personal history, from his memories of growing up on ranches and farms in the Central Valley. His father had worked for a Japanese American farmer until the attack on Pearl Harbor. After President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, the Japanese American farmer and his family were forcibly relocated to one of 10 internment camps in the Western states.
As a “homegrown product” of El Teatro Campesino— which was founded in 1965 as a “farm workers’ theatre” with the support of Cesar Chavez’s United Farm Workers—the play has come full circle. Valley of the Heart was workshopped and performed at El Teatro Campesino’s theatre in Northern California’s San Juan Bautista in 2013 and moved to the San Jose Stage Company in 2016 for its World premiere. Some of the original company and creative team members followed the production to reprise their roles for the Taper stage, including many of Valdez’s family members. Luis Valdez’s brother, Daniel Valdez—who wrote music for Zoot Suit and appeared in both the original production and last year’s revival—is one of them. Rose Portillo, who also appeared in both productions of Zoot Suit, is also back.
With unoccupied farmlands on their hands in the midst of a major war effort, the Farm Security Administration encouraged and supported remaining farmworkers—like Valdez’s father—to tend the farms in the Japanese American owners’ absence. Although Valdez’s family prospered with this opportunity, it all came to a halt when the war ended. Valdez was a child at the time, and he hadn’t realized that the farm “The Taper was my introduction to the whole belonged to another family. professional theatre world, where I went from arts “I still feel a sense of guilt, a sense of disappointment, activism among farmworkers to the more commercial about the fact that it wasn’t our farm,” he said. “All of aspect of theatre,” said Valdez. “L.A. is where my the [Army] support fell apart; the whole agribusiness audience is. The cultural fusion we see in L.A. is the wave By 1946, the Valdez family found themselves “in of the future. It’s a place where you see people a worn-out pick up truck traveling up and down being accepted for who they are and being allowed California, working as migrants.” At one point while to contribute what they can give from their souls. Later, this couple “I feel a sense of basic responsibility as would inspire the star-crossed lovers in Valley of playwright born and raised in California the Heart. “I never forgot Thelma and Benjamin and my friend Esteban,” said Valdez. At the same time, “the story of Valley of the Heart is really universal in the sense that it is common to all the Japanese American families during that period.”

DULÉ HILL IN LIGHTS OUT: NAT “KING” COLE. PHOTO BY MARK GARVIN.
In this highly theatrical exploration into the soul of an American icon, Tony and Olivier Award-nominee Colman Domingo and Patricia McGregor imagine Nat “King” Cole as he faces the final Christmastime broadcast of his groundbreaking variety show and weighs the advice of his friend Sammy Davis Jr. to “go out with a bang.” Songs such as “Nature Boy,” “It’s a Good Day” and “Unforgettable” underscore this innovative look at one of America’s greatest talents. Starring Emmy Award-nominee Dulé Hill (West Wing; Stick Fly; Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk) as Nat “King” Cole and Daniel J. Watts (Hamilton, Memphis) as Sammy Davis Jr.

The consensus among all presenters was the need to emphasize more general skills—especially financial skills, both personal and professional. They also agreed that there is a tremendous breadth of opportunities available to young people. Attendees then split into groups to discuss career training within specific theatre disciplines, such as acting, stage management, and design, and topics such as how best to support diverse students, as well as institutions’ hiring needs and requirements. Each group was tasked with creating a list of what a student studying a particular discipline would need to learn to prepare them for the professional world. Schenkkan said she is excited to share these lists, as well as the survey results and other findings from the day: “Rather than coming only from Center Theatre Group, these lists and consensus are coming from all of these schools and institutions collectively.”
This dramatic re-telling weaves together firsthand accounts by 30 World War I soldiers with music including patriotic tunes, trench songs and Christmas carols.

members of the staff. Clark used the time to refine the struggles and motivations of the characters. “The very first draft was deeply bleak, and everybody in it was sort of a terrible person,” admitted Clark. “I think the play has evolved from where everybody was a little bit bad to being a play where everybody is a little bit good, but something about that is in some ways scarier because people with good intentions don’t always do the right thing.” “Everyone in the play is complicit in the complications that move the story forward,” noted Keller. “It is a real gift to have the time for the writer to be able to develop her plot and characters in such interesting ways.” Quack also benefited from an extra week of rehearsals, made possible by an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, a prestigious grant that has supported some of the best new work in the nation over the past decade, including Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen. Brad Edgerton, MD, who sits on the Center Theatre Group Board of Directors, also directs the Edgerton Foundation New Plays Program with his wife, Louisa. As the production comes together, both Clark and Keller are eager to bring the show to Los Angeles audiences. “It’s a very scary play and a very funny comedy—it is a remarkable tightrope. Eliza is writing at such a high level. I am excited to share it with our audiences,” said Keller. And for all of the heady subject matter, said Clark, “people should be prepared to laugh.”

it interlocks with the experience of the audience sitting in the theatre seats.” Center Theatre Group offered major technological assistance in addition to dramaturgical and material support. “We built a whole set for him in the rehearsal room,” said Rodriguez “We used as many tools as we had to make it as soundproof as possible, and we were able to help get the cost of creating the final set down. There’s many things that innovate in the piece, and one of them is the architecture of that room.” Although Jan has loved the essay for many years, “the Center Theatre Group commission launched the process” of creating the piece. “It was an amazing moment to really be asked what it was that I wanted to work on,” he said, adding “Center Theatre Group is a
Los Angeles institution, and it was a necessity to have an incredible partner in L.A. for the development and presentation of this work.” Partnerships—with these artists as well as REDCAT and UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance—are crucial to Center Theatre Group’s efforts to raise L.A.’s profile as a theatre destination. Our Off Center collaborations are designed to be exciting for everyone involved: artists, companies, and of course our audiences, who embrace Ephraim Sykes, Jeremy Pope, James Harkness, Jared Joseph, and Derrick Baskin in Ain’t Too Proud— Thethe Life and Times of The Temptations at Berkeley Theatre.
