Dear Audience Member, This month, we’re proud to have productions at three theatres—plus a bonus live art theatrical experience—that demonstrate our commitment to diversity in every sense of the word. After making its World premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in 1978, Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit became a major hit and the first Chicano play on Broadway. Our historic revival—its first ever in Los Angeles—is an integral part of our 50 Anniversary Season, and continues to be a vital story of our city and nation. TH

Over the past decade, Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir Fun Home has become a classic of LGBT literature, and in 2015, it became a new classic musical, which is onstage now at the Ahmanson Theatre. Alison Bechdel may be the most groundbreaking and multidimensional lesbian character ever to appear in a major Broadway show. With the World premiere of Ngozi Anyanwu’s Good Grief at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, we’re carrying on a long Center Theatre Group tradition of supporting new work and new voices. This is Anyanwu’s first professionally produced play, and it’s been a pleasure for us to help develop and nurture it. We’re also excited to share Remote L.A., directed and produced by award-winning international documentary theatre team Rimini Protokoll. If you see groups of 50 people swarming out around Downtown Los Angeles wearing headphones… they’re actually participating in this production. Center Theatre Group has been cultivating and building relationships with artists of all backgrounds from around the world for five decades now. We invite you to read more about it in the segment of our 50 Anniversary timeline in this issue, which highlights 1988–1997, and explore more content—including photos, video, music, and newspaper clippings—on our full digital timeline at CenterTheatreGroup.org. TH

Sincerely,

Michael Ritchie artistic director, center theatre group

ARTS SCHOLAR AND THINKER DIANE RAGSDALE addressed Southern California theatre community members at the Mark Taper Forum on January 9, 2017 with a thought-provoking talk titled “Transformation or Bust: When Hustling Ticket Sales and Contributions Is Just not Cutting it Anymore.” A roundtable conversation followed among Center Theatre Group, Pasadena Playhouse, and South Coast Repertory about community engagement programs and strategy. The talk and roundtable were supported by the James Irvine Foundation. Watch Ragsdale’s talk at YouTube.com/CTGLA and subscribe to see more videos from Center Theatre Group.

Over four days in February and March, students from across Southern California are attending Zoot Suit Student Matinees at the Mark Taper Forum. Their teachers began immersing themselves in the play a month beforehand, coming together on January 19, 2017 with Center Theatre Group staff and Teaching Artists for an Educator Conference. There they learned more about the themes, ideas, and context of Zoot Suit and were introduced to activities to bring back to their classrooms in advance of coming to see the show.

CELEBRATING ZOOT SUIT AT CITY HALL The Tom Bradley room at City Hall hosted Center Theatre Group supporters for a discussion about the impact of Zoot Suit in advance of our revival at the Mark Taper Forum. Writer/director Luis Valdez (left) joined Michael Ritchie (right) on January 11, 2017 to talk about Valdez’s work as an artist and an activist over the past 50 years in honor of our 50 Anniversary. Celebrating

Gordon Davidson Artists and Collaborators Paid Tribute to our Founding Artistic Director at the Ahmanson Theatre “Any time any of us walk into a theatre,

whether it’s here in Los Angeles, across the country, even around the world, we walk into that theatre with Gordon Davidson, who has affected not just dozens or hundreds or thousands of people; he’s affected millions of lives by his work, his words, and his spirit.” Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie opened a celebration of the life and work of Davidson, Center Theatre Group’s Founding Artistic Director, with a potent reminder of how vital Davidson was to the art of theatre. Davidson, who died in October, led Center Theatre Group for nearly four decades from our founding in 1967. Ritchie and the speakers who paid tribute to Davidson on January 9, 2017 at a free public program at the Ahmanson Theatre made it clear that it’s impossible to overestimate Davidson’s contributions and impact:

“The Mark Taper Forum became a crucible for all Americans of color” under Davidson, said Zoot Suit writer/director Luis Valdez. “He opened the doors not just for Chicanos but for everyone.” “Angels in America”—a show Davidson produced and supported from its early stages—“probably affected more policy across America than any political memo,” said former L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

“He became a guardian angel for me,” said Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner in a recorded tribute. “I can’t imagine my career in the theatre without him.”

“I may sit in Joe Papp’s chair,” said Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis, “but I’m doing Gordon’s work.” The artists and others who had collaborated with Davidson all spoke about the tremendous joy he brought to his work. “He was a remarkable human being, and that’s why I think everyone loved him, and that’s why the work he did in Los Angeles was such a success,” said actress Judith Light in a recorded tribute. “It came from the heart and the passion and the love that Gordon had for the theatre and for artists in theatre.” A number of speakers elicited laughter as they recalled Davidson appearing to fall asleep during a performance—only to wake up to deliver spot-on notes. Longtime Mark Taper Forum Production Manager Jonathan Barlow Lee gave a vivid picture of what it was like to work with the tireless Davidson. “‘How can this have happened?’”, he explained, was “a phrase Gordon would use whenever some unpleasant surprise or disappointment would come up.” He spoke with reverence about how Davidson “inspired us to share his almost mystical faith in the power of theatre.”

My wealth. My priorities. My partner. You’ve spent your life accumulating wealth. And, no doubt, that wealth now takes many forms, sits in many places, and is managed by many advisors. Unfortunately, that kind of fragmentation creates gaps that can hold your wealth back from its full potential. The Private Bank can help. “Angels in America”—a show Davidson produced and supported from its early stages—“probably affected more policy across America than any political memo,” said former L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. Speeches were interspersed with performances, many of which came from shows Davidson helped shepherd to the stage. Charlayne Woodard performed a portion of her autobiographical solo show Pretty Fire. Andrea Marcovicci sang “Springtime” from Ghetto, which Davidson directed at the Taper in 1986. Harry Groener sang the Gershwins’ “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.” Culture Clash performed their take on “Who’s on First” in a scene from Chavez Ravine, which made its World premiere at the Taper in 2003. And Keith David performed a monologue from August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. The final two speakers of the night were Davidson’s daughter, Rachel, and wife, Judi, who offered emotional remembrances. “I would have treated him better if I’d known how important he was going to be,” quipped Judi, who thanked everyone in attendance and marveled at the outpouring of respect and appreciation for Davidson’s legacy in the months since his death. It’s a legacy Center Theatre Group is proud and honored to continue to carry on.

FROM SoCAL TO BROADWAY & BACK The Journey of from the Ojai Playwrights Conference to the Ahmanson Fun Home makes its Los Angeles debut at the Ahmanson Theatre February 21 – April 1, 2017— but this is actually a homecoming of sorts for a show that began its extraordinary, award-winning journey to Broadway here in Southern California. In 2009, composer Jeanine Tesori and playwright Lisa Kron came to the Ojai Playwrights Conference (OPC) for a focused retreat where they could begin digging deeply into their source material. There they also met their director and close collaborator, Sam Gold. “Issues of sexual identity, exclusion, acceptance, and reaching the fullness of one’s abilities in a polarized America were—and are—some of Fun Home’s thematic concerns,” said OPC Artistic Director/ Producer Robert Egan. “OPC’s mission is to develop new plays for the theatre that care and dare to confront the burning social, political, and ethical issues that challenge us today. OPC was the perfect place for the creators to have a free, supportive, and rigorous arena where they could initiate their investigation into these concerns.” Indeed, Center Theatre Group and OPC—which are celebrating their 50 and 20 anniversaries, respectively, this year—have a long history of collaborating on works that, like Fun Home, “share a deep concern with the world in which we live and how we live in that world with justice, fairness and humanity,” said Egan, who previously served as Artistic Producing Director of the Taper for 20 years. Jon Robin Baitz, Danai Gurira, and Luis Alfaro are just three of the playwrights whose works have flowed from OPC to Center Theatre Group. “Center Theatre Group staff, donors, and audience have all become a significant part of the OPC community, helping to bring new plays into being,” added Egan. Innovative Lighting Designer PABLO SANTIAGO Wins the 2017 Richard E. Sherwood Award

‘You Have to Find Your Own Voice’ Pablo Santiago speaks slowly and carefully, pausing between phrases as he considers his words. He brings this same thoughtfulness to his lighting design. Santiago’s unique style has been recognized with the 2017 Sherwood Award for emerging artists.

The $10,000 Sherwood Award was established in 1996 in memory of longtime Center Theatre Group Board member Richard E. Sherwood to nurture innovative, adventurous Los Angeles theatre artists. Santiago more than fits the bill with his “unusual” approach to lighting. “Sometimes people question whether what I’m doing is a good idea. But you have to create a way of working and telling a story that is particular to you. You have to find your own voice,” Santiago said. “My mom reminded me recently that I’ve been at this for 22 years. Winning the Sherwood feels like a validation of the approach I have taken.” Santiago, who grew up in Chiapas, Mexico, had a roundabout entry into the world of live theatre. After graduating from UC San Diego with a degree in visual art, he worked in lighting design in film for 15 years. It wasn’t until his wife, a modern dance choreographer, enlisted his help because she couldn’t afford a lighting designer, that he “fell in love with how light works in a live performance.” Determined to better understand live performance, he went back to school to earn a graduate degree from UCLA. For Santiago, the differences between lighting for film and for the stage are striking. “In film you are tied to reality a lot more,” he said. “The lighting is specific to that moment. Onstage, the opposite is true. You can

be more unrealistic, architectural, or colorful. It can be more emotional. But you also have to be very careful about how you direct the eye and have to account for the whole play from the beginning. In theatre, you do one long take that is an act long.” For him, that’s part of the fun of it. “In theatre, lighting acts like the editor in a movie. You create the cuts of the story.” Santiago is currently at work on Good Grief, a World premiere at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, and Zoot Suit at the Mark Taper Forum. Good Grief presents the challenge and opportunity of being a totally blank slate. Zoot Suit has a different kind of pressure. Apart from the fact that Zoot Suit is mythic in its own right, that Luis Valdez—the legendary Chicano playwright and original director of the 1978 premiere at the Taper—is helming its revival, and that the original production is embedded in the national theatre narrative, Santiago has bigger challenges facing him than high expectations.

T

T N

“Luis Valdez is very interested in the idea of the show functioning as a film noir movie, which requires a lot of contrast and shadow,” said Santiago. “The story itself is also challenging. There is a mental space and a mythic space. There is reality and there is song.” Music is integral to Zoot Suit, which is a good thing for Santiago, who feels that lighting and music are closely connected. “Lighting functions best when it has a musical rhythm. Timing is also very important. There is also something visceral about the reaction one has to how a space is lit and that is an interesting way for me to communicate,” he said.

“In theatre, lighting acts like the editor in a movie. You create the cuts of the story.”

INVESTING IN NEW TALENT Humanitas Prize Winner Ngozi Anyanwu’s First Play will Premiere at the Kirk Douglas Theatre

Throw a stone in Los Angeles and if you don’t hit a pressed juice bar or an actor, you’re probably going to impale a writer.

The question of how to tap into one of this city’s great natural resources—its pool of writing talent—is in part what drove Center Theatre Group to collaborate on last year’s Humanitas Playwriting Prize recognizing the best new unproduced play by a writer based in Southern California. In February 2016, Ngozi Anyanwu, a recent UC San Diego graduate who was primarily based in L.A., became the first Humanitas winner. Her debut play, Good Grief, makes its World premiere at the Kirk Douglas Theatre February 26 – March 26, 2017. When Anyanwu won the prize, she was awarded $5,000 toward a Southern California production of Good Grief and a reading of the play at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. She hoped the recognition, the cash, and the reading would lead to a premiere, but it was also her very first play. “I thought I would be doing this in a basement with a bunch of friends,” Anyanwu said. Instead, she now has the stage of one of the country’s largest theatre companies. “Center Theatre Group has been hugely supportive, and it’s amazing to be working with people who have a relationship with this work, because they have been with the piece for so long. They have as much at stake in it as I do,” she said.

Ngozi Anyanwu at a reading of Good Grief. Photo by Craig Schwartz.

She gives a great deal of credit to Center Theatre Group for opening both our own doors and others to a new talent. “When the Humanitas Prize was announced it was everywhere—Variety, Playbill, BroadwayWorld,” she said. “Theatres began asking about my play, and asking to read it. Even if people couldn’t produce it, they were interested in it. Half the battle of a playwright is even getting an organization to read your work.” Currently working on her second play, Anyanwu is also starring in the premiere of Good Grief, which is sure to raise her profile even further. But regardless of where this journey takes her next, she feels a sense of responsibility as a rising young playwright. “The theatre world needs to hold itself accountable for the theatre we are making and who we are making it for,” she said. “We tend to look to New York as the mecca of having things to say, but that’s not true. We need to not treat our playwrights as if they don’t have anything to say on a national scale.” She added, “Local narratives are just as important as national narratives.” Good Grief is deeply personal; the story of a daughter of Nigerian immigrants struggling to process the death of her best friend. “The play is about something everyone goes through— working through grief. It’s healing and beautiful to share that with people,” said Anyanwu.

Bank of America Supports Southern California Culture—and ‘Zoot Suit’ AN INTERVIEW WITH GREATER LOS ANGELES REGION PRESIDENT RAUL A. ANAYA Zoot Suit is a piece of Los Angeles history, a celebration of the city’s

diversity and creativity, and a great work of art—all reasons why Bank of America is the presenting sponsor for Center Theatre Group’s 50 Anniversary production at the Mark Taper Forum. For Raul A. Anaya, Bank of America Greater Los Angeles region President, the excitement about Zoot Suit resonates not just organizationally but also personally. Anaya was born in Detroit, the son of Mexican immigrants, and grew up in Texas before moving to Arizona and then Los Angeles, where he assumed his current position in 2012. TH

Bank of America is a longtime supporter and partner of Center Theatre Group. “This production is a great expression of the power of arts and culture both creatively and economically for us in Southern California,” added Anaya.

(above, l–r) Rose Portillo, Daniel Valdez, Evelina Fernandez (partially seen), Edward James Olmos, Rachel Levario, and Mike Gomez in the World premiere of Zoot Suit at the Mark Taper Forum. Photo by Jay Thompson.

“What was so empowering to me was to hear the stories about my community and our history featuring people who looked like me and understood me, with lyrics and songs that featured rhythms and sounds that were from my culture,” he said of Zoot Suit’s importance when it premiered in 1978. “The play brought our stories to the mainstream in a way that told the uniquely American story of Chicanos during a very challenging time in our history.” He believes it still has a lot to teach us. “It is one of those shows that will always be timeless for me,” said Anaya. “The need to break down cultural barriers still exists today. Zoot Suit is still opening eyes and knocking down walls and stereotypes.” Indeed, “so much of the connection and understanding of Latino culture around the country and world comes out of Los Angeles,” said Anaya. “Just look at the impact of Angelenos like George Lopez, Cheech Marin, Ozomatli, and Fernando Valenzuela. Zoot Suit is a reminder of the power that our Latino culture has had— and will continue to have.” It’s also a reminder of the cultural influence of Southern California. “L.A. is constantly evolving,” said Anaya. “One wave of immigrants is followed by another group of newcomers. I think L.A.’s fluid nature is a powerful thing. It’s what allows ideas and products from here to move beyond our region—and out to the world. We see that phenomenon with L.A.’s influence on food, fashion, design, music, entertainment, and so much more.” That’s one reason why Bank of America has been investing in the creativity of Los Angeles for over 100 years. “Creativity is an essential element of what makes Los Angeles dynamic and unique,” said Anaya. “We at Bank of America believe that the arts, especially live theatre, are a vital way to connect people, build vibrant communities, and stimulate local economies.” Bank of America is a longtime supporter and partner of Center Theatre Group. “This production is a great expression of the power of arts and culture both creatively and economically for us in Southern California,” added Anaya.

“City National helps keep my financial life in tune.” So much of my life is always shifting; a different city, a different piece of music, a different ensemble. I need people who I can count on to help keep my financial life on course so I can focus on creating and sharing the “adventures” of classical music. City National shares my passion and is instrumental in helping me bring classical music to audiences all over the world. They enjoy being a part of what I do and love. That is the essence of a successful relationship. City National is The way up® for me.

A Letter From The Playwright This was a play written because I missed someone and I missed myself when I was this young. I conjured him. I thought of him. Conjured my past and wrote the things I might have said or did had I a second chance to walk in this world. So for all intents and purposes, though it feels autobiographical...This is still very much a work of fiction, but for thinking these words. For saying these words for directing these words I thank you. Through you these people live.

50 YEARS AT CENTER THEATRE GROUP

Key Shows and Moments in our History

1988–1997 Center Theatre Group continued to cultivate and build relationships with theatrical talent from around the world in our third decade, from August Wilson to Matthew Bourne. A highlight of this decade came in 1992 and 1993, when Mark Taper Forum plays The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America: Millennium Approaches won back-to-back Pulitzer Prizes. More highlights from our history are featured in our digital timeline at CenterTheatreGroup.org.

LINDSAY ALLBAUGH (Associate Producer) is a member of Center Theatre Group’s artistic staff and has served in varying capacities for the past 13 years. Currently, Lindsay is developing and producing the inaugural Block Party program for Center Theatre Group, bringing three 99-seat theatre productions to the Douglas 2016/17 Season. Lindsay also serves as the artistic coordinator for Center Theatre Group’s Sherwood Award. Selected producing credits include—Mark Taper Forum: Bent, What the Butler Saw, Steward of Christendom, Waiting for Godot; Kirk Douglas Theatre: Throw Me On the Burnpile and Light Me Up, Endgame, Women Laughing Alone With Salad, Chavez Ravine, Race, different words for the same thing, The Nether. Co-Artistic Director of the Elephant Theatre 2004–2014. NAUSICA STERGIOU (General Manager, Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre) has worked professionally supporting artists in theatres of all shapes, sizes, and locales including many

seasons at Center Theatre Group as General Manager and, previously, as Audience Development Director. She oversees mainstage productions at the Taper and Douglas, as well as new play commissions and developmental productions through Center Theatre Group’s New Play Development. Nausica has taught at USC’s School of Dramatic Arts, and advises and works with local nonprofits including Hollywood Orchard. GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre—including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts, and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989, Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.
