Dear Audience Member, Fifty years ago this month, on April 9, 1967, the Mark Taper Forum and Ahmanson Theatre were dedicated at a star-studded event. Actor Gregory Peck proclaimed, “Tonight marks the realization of what seemed an impossible dream. Since we didn’t inherit great cultural monuments, we had to create our own.” Speaking before the opening production at the Mark Taper Forum—the controversial The Devils—Governor Ronald Reagan called The Music Center “a beautiful temple of our profession and our art.” Over the past 50 years, we haven’t thought about what we do as taking place in a monument or a temple but as part of a community—both local and national. The work onstage this month represents both those communities. At the Kirk Douglas Theatre, we’re hosting our inaugural Block Party, our new annual celebration of the rich and diverse theatre ecosystem of Los Angeles. We’re proud to be presenting recent productions from three stellar local companies: Coeurage Theatre Company, The Fountain Theatre, and The Echo Theater Company. And at the Ahmanson Theatre, we’re bringing the acclaimed Fiasco Theater production of Into The Woods to Los Angeles audiences—a reinvention of classic fairy tales from one of contemporary theatre’s great ensemble companies. Thank you for being part of our community as we turn 50. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating our past by taking a look at the segment of our 50 Anniversary timeline in this issue, which highlights 1998–2007. And please visit our full digital timeline at CenterTheatreGroup.org to explore more content—including photos, video, music, and newspaper clippings from that very first dedication ceremony up to today. AROUND CENTER THEATRE GROUP Recent Ahmanson Productions By the Numbers
Center Theatre Group has a rich history of producing fresh and new works at the Ahmanson Theatre, but producing three shows back-to-back is a formidable undertaking. And that’s just what we did from July 2016 – January 2017, with Grey Gardens, A View From the Bridge, and Amélie, A New Musical, all of which involved bringing casts and creative teams from around the world to Los Angeles. Here’s a look at the behind-the-scenes work our management team put into these productions—by the numbers:
138 inquiries made to New York City rehearsal studios to find rental space
3,496 nights
in hotels and apartments booked
5 arrangements
148 contracts issued
for actors, stage managers, and creative team members
made for traveling pets
212 plane and train tickets booked
Students Swarm ‘Zoot Suit’ Nearly 3,000 high school students and educators from across Los Angeles attended Student Matinees of Zoot Suit at the Mark Taper Forum February 21–23 and March 16, 2017. After the show, cast members participated in question-and-answer sessions, and many classes also received pre- and post-show classroom visits from teaching artists in addition to educational materials designed to immerse them in the world of the play. 8 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS at Center Theatre Group
May 20, 2017 Marks the Biggest Event in our History
It’s an evening half a century in the making. Center Theatre Group’s 50 Celebration will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2017. Some of the world’s most talented artists and Center Theatre Group supporters, led by 50 Celebration Chair Sue Tsao, are coming together to honor our past and create a secure foundation for our future—for one night only. TH
TH
“Center Theatre Group has been a home for so many artists in Los Angeles since 1967. And it’s been a home to me and countless other audience members over the past 50 years. It’s the perfect time for us to celebrate everything the company has given us and to give back, too,” said Tsao, who is also a Member of the Center Theatre Group Board. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception on The Music Center Plaza, featuring behind-the-scenes glimpses into some of our most beloved shows from the past 50 years. Then, guests will head into the Ahmanson Theatre for a show featuring Center Theatre Group alumni artists and a number of famous faces, including Sir Matthew Bourne, Sutton Foster, Nathan Lane, and Phylicia Rashad—with many more to come. The production is helmed by producer Robert Egan, who is working with Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie and a star-studded artist committee to create an unforgettable night at the theatre.
The evening will continue with a festive party at Grand Park. Guests will dine on cuisine by a slate of Los Angeles’ most lauded chefs, curated by Patina Restaurant Group’s Joachim Splichal: Vartan Abgaryan (71Above), Josiah Citrin (Melisse), Ray Garcia (Broken Spanish), Bruce Kalman (Union), and Frania Mendivil (Patina). They’ll also be treated to surprise entertainment courtesy of media artist Kate Johnson, who is incorporating materials from Center Theatre Group’s rich archives into an immersive dining experience.
“This is a night to celebrate where Center Theatre Group has come from and where we are going next," said Ritchie. “I'm honored to have been a part of the first 50 years of the company and to be helping usher in our next act alongside the people and artists who have helped make it all possible." The 50 Celebration is the biggest event in our history and a pivotal moment: the launch of the next 50 years of great theatre here and across Los Angeles. Proceeds from this spectacular evening will support Center Theatre Group’s world-class productions, innovative programs, new work, emerging artists, and future generations of theatre lovers. TH

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD INTRODUCING THE COMPANIES BEHIND BLOCK PARTY AT THE KIRK DOUGLAS THEATRE BLOCK PARTY IS OUR NEW CELEBRATION OF LOS ANGELES THEATRE. In January, we announced that we would be collaborating with three local theatre companies to make this inaugural event a reality. Coeurage Theatre Company, The Fountain Theatre, and The Echo Theater Company are each one piece of the ecosystem that is Los Angeles theatre, and their stories are as vibrant and diverse as the city they call home. The youngest company to collaborate with us on Block Party is Coeurage Theatre Company. Founded in 2009 by a group of graduates from California State University, Fullerton, their name is derived from the French word for “heart.” It is a quality they bring to all their productions. In fact, a 2016 American Theatre Magazine story singled them out as “among the most theatrical of the many theatre companies in Los Angeles.” Coeurage extends that heart beyond the stage to their audiences. Operating on a pay-what-you-want business model, they “exist to make impassioned theatre available to all audiences,” said Coeurage Theatre Company Artistic Director Jeremy Lelliott. “We let every single patron who comes to our show choose their own ticket price for every single performance for every single production.” For our first Block Party, we’re taking a page from Coeurage’s book and offering a special pay-what-you-want preview for all three Block Party shows, the first of which is set be Coeurage’s production of Failure: A Love Story by Philip Dawkins. Failure tells the story of the Fail sisters and their ill-fated love affairs with the same man in a magical (and theatrical) Chicago of the 1920s. For Lelliott, it represents a vote of confidence in the work that Coeurage is doing. “It’s pretty remarkable that Center Theatre Group is putting, literally, their money where their mouths are and pointing to [the L.A. theatre] community and saying, Hey, everyone. Look over here. We believe in what these people are doing.” To see Failure: A Love Story, head over to the Douglas April 14–23, 2017. The Fountain Theatre was founded in 1990 by co-Artistic Directors Deborah Lawlor and Stephen Sachs. From the beginning, they have been committed to presenting work that reflects the diversity of the city they call home. Located near a sleepy section of Hollywood, The Fountain Theatre makes its home near the corner of Fountain and Normandie.

For over 20 years, they have produced works from laudable playwrights such as Athol Fugard, Tanya Saracho, and Tarell Alvin McCraney (who is coming to the Taper soon with Head of Passes). For Block Party, they will be presenting their 2015 production of Citizen: An American Lyric. Citizen is an adaptation of Claudia Rankine’s book by the same name, and uses interviews, first-hand accounts, and poetry to explore racism in the Unites States. Stephen Sachs (who also wrote the adaptation) is excited to bring this production to the Douglas stage. “[Center Theatre Group] is being incredibly generous to open its doors, and its resources, to allow us as theatre artists to expand our artistic vision of what the piece could be,” he said. Catch Citizen: An American Lyric onstage at the Douglas April 28 – May 7, 2017. The Echo Theater Company is a playwright’s theatre company. Since 1997, they have presented 48 Word premieres by playwrights like Sarah Ruhl, Adam Rapp, Tommy Smith, and Sheila Callaghan at their space in the Atwater Village Theatre complex. “Our mission is to nurture playwrights and produce and present them at any and all levels,” said Echo Theater Company Artistic Director Chris Fields. “We do readings, we do workshops, we do full productions, and we emphasize the relationship with the playwright.” It’s a tradition they continue as they remount Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel for Block Party. Written when Spiegel was only 21 years old, it tells the tale of two high school seniors, an unwanted pregnancy, and the obstacles facing young women in America. As an added bonus for those who missed it the first time, this represents an opportunity for Los Angeles audiences to see the 2016 Ovation Award-winning production for Best Production of a Play (Intimate Theatre). Closing out the party, Dry Land plays the Kirk Douglas Theatre May 12–21, 2017.
For more information about all the companies involved in Block Party, and to see interviews, previews, and blog articles about the three shows visit CenterTheatreGroup.org.
Block Party receives major support from Aliza Karney Guren and Marc Guren, with generous funding also provided by Joni and Miles Benickes.

I need people who I can count on to help keep my financial life on course so I can focus on creating and sharing the “adventures” of classical music. A Journey of a Century Begins With a Single Student THE AUGUST WILSON MONOLOGUE COMPETITION KEEPS A PLAYWRIGHT’S LEGACY ALIVE
On February 27, 2017, a century of the AfricanAmerican experience came to life on the Mark Taper Forum stage through the words of August Wilson and the voices of Los Angeles high school students. Since 2011, Center Theatre Group has served as the Southern California home for the national August Wilson Monologue Competition. Each year, over 100 students from across the region are introduced to Wilson’s work as part of the program, which begins in the fall. Six months later, 12 of those students emerge as regional finalists and present their monologues in front of a packed Taper house. The road to the competition begins with an afterschool workshop where students learn about Wilson’s American Century Cycle. Teaching artists led this year’s group in acting exercises, introduced them to Wilson’s plays, and guided them through audition techniques. “These workshops are an opportunity to bring together students from all over Southern California for a common goal—to immerse themselves in the work of August Wilson,” said Center Theatre Group Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact Leslie K. Johnson.
“Seeing this new generation engage with the work of a playwright who depicted an overlooked part of the American experience reminds me why this competition is so important.” On November 5, 2016, these 10 , 11 , and 12 grade students from 34 high schools and five counties TH

convened at Center Theatre Group’s headquarters for preliminary auditions. Fifty-three students advanced to the semi-finals, where they performed for judges and received written feedback on their auditions before the 12 regional finalists were selected. “The amount of time and hard work these students put into their monologues is emblematic of the fact this competition is not about who wins or loses. It is about giving young people an opportunity to find themselves and their communities in Wilson’s work,” said Johnson. “The training sessions are not about preparing students to win. They are about allowing students to tap into the depths of their humanity.” For regional finalists Joey Aquino, Luke Baxter, Kelly Bouslaiby, Hollis Dohr, Asa Ferguson, Hannah Franklin, Elija Hall, Habin Lee, Arjang Mahdavi, Ehvinny Mora, Alexander Villaseñor, and Aryana Williams, this meant digging through personal experiences to understand characters whose lives are often very different from their own. To do so, they underwent 16 hours of training with Program Advisor Andi Chapman. They received one-onone coaching in text analysis, character study, and vocal and physical technique. They also worked together as an ensemble, learning how to collaborate and support one another as artists. “The competition is a continuation of the idea that Center Theatre Group is here to support great art and great artists. We pass the torch to a new generation of artists. Each year, I am amazed by the complexity, emotion, and understanding this new generation brings to Wilson’s

characters,” said Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. This complexity and understanding was on full display throughout the regional finals. First-place finalist Aryana Williams took on the role of Louise from Seven Guitars, imbuing the character with raw, world-weary experience and cutting humor. Alexander Villaseñor, who took second place, brought to life Youngblood from Jitney, a character determined to provide for his girlfriend and family. And third-place finalist Elija Hall, who played Tonya from King Hedley II, shook the audience with her uninhibited depiction of a woman choosing not to have a child.
Her journey is representative of what the August Wilson Competition is all about: experience, understanding, and growth. Which is why the Center Theatre Group Affiliates have supported our August Wilson Program since its inception, and continue to serve as presenting sponsor. “We are thrilled that we can touch the lives of so many young and talented artists,” said Center Theatre Group Affiliates President Kim White Peterson.
The top two performers will travel to New York later this spring to perform in the national finals at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway—a special honor for First-place finalist Aryana Williams. Having come in third in last year’s competition, Williams will finally have her chance to speak Wilson’s words on the Great White Way.

Innovative Lighting Designer PABLO SANTIAGO Wins the 2017 Richard E. Sherwood Award
‘You Have to Find Your Own Voice’ Pablo Santiago speaks slowly and carefully, pausing between phrases as he considers his words. He brings this same thoughtfulness to his lighting design. Santiago’s unique style has been recognized with the 2017 Sherwood Award for emerging artists.
The $10,000 Sherwood Award was established in 1996 in memory of longtime Center Theatre Group Board member Richard E. Sherwood to nurture innovative, adventurous Los Angeles theatre artists. Santiago more than fits the bill with his “unusual” approach to lighting. “Sometimes people question whether what I’m doing is a good idea. But you have to create a way of working and telling a story that is particular to you. You have to find your own voice,” Santiago said. “My mom reminded me recently that I’ve been at this for 22 years. Winning the Sherwood feels like a validation of the approach I have taken.” Santiago, who grew up in Chiapas, Mexico, had a roundabout entry into the world of live theatre. After graduating from UC San Diego with a degree in visual art, he worked in lighting design in film for 15 years. It wasn’t until his wife, a modern dance choreographer, enlisted his help because she couldn’t afford a lighting designer, that he “fell in love with how light works in a live performance.” Determined to better understand live performance, he went back to school to earn a graduate degree from UCLA. For Santiago, the differences between lighting for film and for the stage are striking. “In film you are tied to reality a lot more,” he said. “The lighting is specific to that moment. Onstage, the opposite is true. You can

be more unrealistic, architectural, or colorful. It can be more emotional. But you also have to be very careful about how you direct the eye and have to account for the whole play from the beginning. In theatre, you do one long take that is an act long.” For him, that’s part of the fun of it. “In theatre, lighting acts like the editor in a movie. You create the cuts of the story.” Santiago recently worked on Good Grief, a World premiere at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, and Zoot Suit at the Mark Taper Forum. Good Grief presented the challenge and opportunity of being a totally blank slate. Zoot Suit had a different kind of pressure. Apart from the fact that Zoot Suit was mythic in its own right, that Luis Valdez—the legendary Chicano playwright and original director of the 1978 premiere at the Taper—was helming its revival, and that the original production was embedded in the national theatre narrative, Santiago had bigger challenges facing him than high expectations. “Luis Valdez was very interested in the idea of the show functioning as a film noir movie, which requires a lot of contrast and shadow,” said Santiago. “The story itself is also challenging. There is a mental space and a mythic space. There is reality and there is song.” Music is integral to Zoot Suit, which is a good thing for Santiago, who feels that lighting and music are closely connected. “Lighting functions best when it has a musical rhythm. Timing is also very important. There is also something visceral about the reaction one has to how a space is lit and that is an interesting way for me to communicate,” he said.
“In theatre, lighting acts like the editor in a movie. You create the cuts of the story.”

THE CONVERSATIONS BEYOND OUR STAGES Talking about the Issues Surrounding Zoot Suit Rising young artists speak at our “#YouthPower” panel. Photo by Ryan Miller/Capture Imaging.
Center Theatre Group’s Community Conversations allow audiences to dig into issues surrounding a play with leading scholars, thinkers, and artists. This was particularly important for Zoot Suit. Thanks to a grant from The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation, we were able to create a series of Conversations covering topics from swing dancing to the American media. These conversations began with “#YouthPower: Young Artists Keep Changing the World.” Hosted at AltaMed’s headquarters, “#YouthPower” brought a group of rising local artists together to respond to issues affecting their community. In “The Making of the Zoot Suit Revival,” lighting designer and Richard E. Sherwood Award winner Pablo Santiago (profiled on page 20) discussed the process of remounting this historic show at the theatre where it first premiered. The musically minded got a chance to explore the boogie-woogie, R&B, jazz, and Chicano big band tunes that propel the show forward in “The Song and the Swing of Zoot Suit,” where a panel of dancers, choreographers, and scholars led audience members in discussion—and dance moves. We also collaborated with the Museum of Latin American Art on “Zoot Suit in Dreamland,” taking place in tandem with the museum’s Frank Romero retrospective. Scholars came together to discuss how politics inspired the work of Zoot Suit writer/director Luis Valdez, visual artist Romero, and other 20 -century Chicano creators. TH
We looked at another side of politics with “Dress for Unrest,” a conversation about how we show affiliations, communicate beliefs, and make social statements through fashion, from the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots to today. Our Conversations concluded with “Has News Ever Been Fair and Balanced?”, during which panelists discussed such topics as the media’s influence on the persecution of minority groups. The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation recognizes theatre’s power to address pertinent, provocative issues that engage diverse communities, and Zoot Suit aligns with their focus on socially charged theatre productions. Just this year, The Foundation broadened its impact on American theatre by extending its geographic reach; organizations throughout Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington can apply for a Theatre Enrichment program grant. “We are thrilled to build on the
program’s past success by continuing to support work that addresses critical, relevant social issues and that sparks conversations within our communities,” said Foundation President Sheri Biller. Listen to the Zoot Suit Community Conversations on the Center Theatre Group podcast at CenterTheatreGroup.org.

My wealth. My priorities. My partner. You’ve spent your life accumulating wealth. And, no doubt, that wealth now takes many forms, sits in many places, and is managed by many advisors. Unfortunately, that kind of fragmentation creates gaps that can hold your wealth back from its full potential. The Private Bank can help. The Private Bank uses a proprietary approach called the LIFE Wealth Cycle to find those gaps—and help you achieve what is important to you.

2016/17 SEASON “Brims contagiously with the ineffable, irrational and irrefutable passion for that endangered religion called the Theater.” — New York Times

APR 27-30 THE TUG OF WAR by David Rambo
Presidential judgment in a crisis is the subject of this original commission from David Rambo (Empire, CSI). As Soviet missiles move ever closer to Cuba, John F. Kennedy must parse his inner circle’s varied and conflicting counsel to prevent nuclear annihilation.
MAY 25-28 UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL L.A. Theatre Works has entertained the world for over 40 years with our signature radio theatre format.

The Blue Ribbon Brings Thousands of Children to The Music Center for 47th Annual Children’s Festival More than 18,000 fifth grade students from throughout Los Angeles County immersed themselves in the performing arts at the 47th Annual Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival. Upon arrival, students attended a free performance by Ailey II, the celebrated second company of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in The Music Center’s iconic Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Following the performance, students performed a dance inspired by the Rocka My Soul finale section of Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece Revelations on The Music Center Plaza. The Festival is underwritten and staffed by The Blue Ribbon, the premier women’s support organization of The Music Center. The three-day event is California’s longest-continuing free arts education initiative and has introduced more than 860,000 students to the performing arts since its debut in 1970.
