Dear Audience Member, Fifty years ago this spring, the Mark Taper Forum and Ahmanson Theatre were dedicated at a star-studded event. Gregory Peck proclaimed, “Tonight marks the realization of what seemed an impossible dream. Since we didn’t inherit great cultural monuments, we had to create our own.” Speaking before the opening production at the Mark Taper Forum—the controversial The Devils—Governor Ronald Reagan called The Music Center “a beautiful temple of our profession and our art.” Over the past 50 years, we haven’t thought about what we do as taking place in a monument or a temple but as part of a community—both local and national. The work onstage this month represents both those communities. At the Mark Taper Forum, we’re bringing back Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo playwright Rajiv Joseph, one of the great American playwrights working today, with another World premiere: Archduke. At the Kirk Douglas Theatre, we’re hosting our inaugural Block Party, a new annual celebration of the many top-notch works done by our fellow local theatre companies over the last year and a half. We’re proud to be presenting shows from Coeurage Theatre Company, the Fountain Theatre, and the Echo Theater Company. And at the Ahmanson Theatre, we’re bringing the Fiasco Theater production of Into The Woods and the popular Broadway hit Jersey Boys to Los Angeles audiences. Thank you for being part of our community as we turn 50. We’re excited to be marking this milestone with our 50 Anniversary Celebration on May 20, 2017. We’re also celebrating our past with the concluding decade of our 50 Anniversary timeline in this issue. Please take a look at highlights we’ve selected from 2008 – the present. Then visit our full digital timeline at CenterTheatreGroup.org to explore more content— including photos, video, music, and newspaper clippings from the past half century. TH

Making a Nonprofit Connection With shows constantly opening and closing across three theatres, Center Theatre Group’s production team rarely gets to meet as a full group—and when they do, it’s for a meal. Which is why, when they finally managed to get almost everyone together on March 15, 2017, they decided to do so at L.A. Kitchen, a fellow local nonprofit that engages in food recovery and distribution, culinary job training, and social enterprise. Staff members packed over 325 meals, chopped pallets of vegetables, and made homemade pasta.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS at Center Theatre Group
May 20, 2017 Marks the Biggest Event in our History
It’s an evening half a century in the making. Center Theatre Group’s 50 Celebration will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2017. Some of the world’s most talented artists and Center Theatre Group supporters, led by 50 Celebration Co-Chairs Sue Tsao and NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt, are coming together to honor our past and create a secure foundation for our future—for one night only. TH
TH
“Center Theatre Group has been a home for so many artists in Los Angeles since 1967. And it’s been a home to me and countless other audience members over the past 50 years. It’s the perfect time for us to celebrate everything the company has given us and to give back, too,” said Tsao, who is also a Member of the Center Theatre Group Board. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception on The Music Center Plaza, featuring behind-the-scenes glimpses into some of our most beloved shows from the past 50 years. Then, guests will head into the Ahmanson Theatre for a show featuring Center Theatre Group alumni artists and a number of famous faces, including Annette Bening, Sir Matthew Bourne, Alfred Molina, and Phylicia Rashad—with many more to come. The production is helmed by writer, director, and producer Robert Egan, who is working with Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie and a star-studded artist committee to create an unforgettable night at the theatre.
The evening will continue with a festive party at Grand Park. Guests will dine on cuisine by a slate of Los Angeles’ most lauded chefs, curated by Patina Restaurant Group’s Joachim Splichal: Vartan Abgaryan (71Above), Josiah Citrin (Mélisse), Ray Garcia (Broken Spanish), Bruce Kalman (Union), and Frania Mendivil (Patina). They’ll also be treated to surprise entertainment courtesy of media artist Kate Johnson and Brite Ideas, who are incorporating materials from Center Theatre Group’s rich archives into an immersive dining experience.
“This is a night to celebrate where Center Theatre Group has come from and where we are going next," said Ritchie. “I'm honored to have been a part of the first 50 years of the company and to be helping usher in our next act alongside the people and artists who have helped make it all possible." The 50 Celebration is the biggest event in our history and a pivotal moment: the launch of the next 50 years of great theatre here and across Los Angeles. Proceeds from this spectacular evening will support Center Theatre Group’s world-class productions, innovative programs, new work, emerging artists, and future generations of theatre lovers. TH

Building Theatre’s Professional Pipeline Center Theatre Group Joins Forces with Local Organizations and Schools on College and Career Fairs Southern California’s high schools, colleges, and universities abound with aspiring artists, artisans, and arts administrators. And Southern California is full of people who have forged successful arts careers. But connecting them to one another, and creating paths for young people in the field, is a challenge not just for students but also for the organizations and schools that serve them, as well as the employers who want to hire them.
“We’re looking to disrupt stereotypes with professionals who don’t look like whatever students may have thought their profession would look like. The experience we want every student to have is, ‘I think I can do that, I can see myself doing that.’”
For the past two years, Center Theatre Group has teamed up with these groups to create two college and career fairs that are becoming an integral part of our professional pipeline for the next generation of theatre makers. On April 8, 2017, we joined forces with LA STAGE Alliance, the UCLA School of Theatre, Film and Television, and the USC School of Dramatic Arts to present the Center Theatre Group Going Pro Career Fair at the East Los Angeles College (ELAC) Performing & Fine Arts Complex. The event is designed to help undergraduate and graduate students get ready to transition to a professional theatre career. And on April 22, 2017, we invited 30 colleges, universities, and organizations to our College & Career Fair for the Arts at The Music Center Annex, which helps high school students figure out how to pursue the arts after graduation. Center Theatre Group Next Generation Initiatives Director Camille Schenkkan has been overwhelmed by enthusiasm from all fronts. “There’s nothing like this in Southern California that I’ve heard of that’s designed expressly for students interested in theatre,” she said. “The fairs were originally meant to serve students, but now they’re serving everyone. On the high school side, colleges are really eager to be there because it’s such a specific audience of students interested in the arts. And on the Going Pro side, so many of the theatre professionals we’ve invited, who are volunteering their time, have said, ‘I wish this existed when I was in school.’” Even UCLA and USC set aside their storied rivalry to participate together. “USC is thrilled to be partnering with Center Theatre Group and UCLA on the Going Pro Career Fair for the second year,” said David Bridel, who holds the Braverman Family Dean’s Chair at
The College & Career Fair for the Arts.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the sister-city partnership between West Berlin and Los Angeles, this exhibition explores two iconic buildings—the Berlin Philharmonic (1963), designed by Hans Scharoun, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall (2003) in Los Angeles, designed by Frank Gehry—through original drawings, photographs, and models, showing how each building fostered a strong resonance between architecture and the city.

the USC School of Dramatic Arts. “This event offers our students invaluable access to theatre professionals from all around Los Angeles and helps to pave the way for their early career steps. It’s a terrific way to build community around young people with a passion for the performing arts.”
The Going Pro Career Fair also strives to give students a full picture of the lay of the Los Angeles theatre landscape, with tables hosted by many different unions, panel discussions on career paths in theatre, individual speed networking sessions with professionals, and an informal networking mixer.
Added UCLA TFT Department of Theater Chair Brian Kite, “UCLA was proud to be part of the first two years of the Going Pro Career Fair, and to be working with Center Theatre Group, USC, and LA STAGE Alliance to create a not-to-be-missed event filled with great information and artistic community.”
“There was a lot of synchronicity in the planning of this,” said Schenkkan, “with colleges thinking deeply about how to help their students transition to the professional theatre workforce. It’s much easier to teach craft than it is to teach students how to get a job in this field—and they know that.” There was also a lot of excitement from unions who are looking to bolster their ranks. IATSE Local 33, the stage technicians union, signed attendees up for work. "It wasn’t theoretical—it was, ‘Can you work next Saturday?’” said Schenkkan. In addition, Backstage magazine offered everyone who attended free subscriptions. “Everyone’s really eager to help,” said Schenkkan.
The organizations participating in the College & Career Fair for the Arts offered nearly every conceivable option for students trying decide where to go and what to pursue after high school, representing general education, technical training, and community colleges, as well as private and public colleges and universities.
We also hosted free workshops on applying and paying for college, “ask me anything” sessions with professional theatre artists, and individual college counseling and personal statement help sessions. “There’s just so much uncertainty when you’re a teenager and you’re trying to figure out what to focus on,” said Schenkkan. “There’s so much fear around the question of, how do I do this? And in the arts, there’s not a clear career pathway like in other fields. We’ve also discovered that there’s inequity in what students are learning about college and career access. Some schools may teach students a lot about scholarships, but at others they may learn about what a BFA in acting is, but not find out how to pay for it. Everybody is getting little bits of college and career information, but nobody’s getting the full picture.”
The fairs are a natural extension of Center Theatre Group's programs to build leadership skills and create career paths for young people in Los Angeles in the arts, which include our high school Student Ambassadors and our graduate and undergraduate interns. “We’re figuring out how to help students in each step along their journey from when they first go see theatre and fall in love with it to becoming the next artistic director or technical director or master electrician or actor,” said Schenkkan. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the forefront of these efforts. “We want every panel to reflect the diversity of the students who are watching it, who look like Los Angeles,” said Schenkkan. “We’re looking to disrupt stereotypes with professionals who don’t look like whatever students may have thought their profession would look like. The experience we want every student to have is, ‘I think I can do that, I can see myself doing that.’”

“City National helps keep my financial life in tune.” So much of my life is always shifting; a different city, a different piece of music, a different ensemble. I need people who I can count on to help keep my financial life on course so I can focus on creating and sharing the “adventures” of classical music. City National shares my passion and is instrumental in helping me bring classical music to audiences all over the world. They enjoy being a part of what I do and love. That is the essence of a successful relationship. City National is The way up® for me.

Commuters in Union Station became actors onstage, a hallway in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel was transformed into a ballroom, and Center Theatre Group audiences reinvented themselves as intrepid urban adventurers as part of Remote L.A., a pedestrianbased live art experience from March 12 – April 2, 2017. Wearing headphones and guided by a computergenerated voice named Heather, groups of 50 people swarmed out from The Music Center into the subways, alleys, and hidden wonders of Downtown Los Angeles.

THE AUGUST WILSON MONOLOGUE COMPETITION KEEPS A PLAYWRIGHT’S LEGACY ALIVE
A Journey of a Century Begins With a Single Student On February 27, 2017, a century of the AfricanAmerican experience came to life on the Mark Taper Forum stage through the words of August Wilson and the voices of Los Angeles high school students. Since 2011, Center Theatre Group has served as the Southern California home for the national August Wilson Monologue Competition. Each year, over 100 students from across the region are introduced to Wilson’s work as part of the program, which begins in the fall. Six months later, 12 of those students emerge as regional finalists and present their monologues in front of a packed Taper house. The road to the competition began with an after-school workshop where students learned about Wilson’s American Century Cycle. Teaching artists led this year’s group in acting exercises, introduced them to Wilson’s plays, and guided them through audition techniques. “These workshops are an opportunity to bring together students from all over Southern California for a common goal—to immerse themselves in the work of August Wilson,” said Center Theatre Group Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact Leslie K. Johnson.
“Seeing this new generation engage with the work of a playwright who depicted an overlooked part of the American experience reminds me why this competition is so important.”
On November 5, 2016, these 10 , 11 , and 12 grade students from 34 high schools and five counties convened at Center Theatre Group’s headquarters for preliminary auditions. Fifty-three students advanced to the semi-finals, where they performed for judges and received written feedback on their auditions before the 12 regional finalists were selected. TH

“The amount of time and hard work these students put into their monologues is emblematic of the fact this competition is not about who wins or loses. It is about giving young people an opportunity to find themselves and their communities in Wilson’s work,” said Johnson. “The training sessions are not about preparing students to win. They are about allowing students to tap into the depths of their humanity.” For regional finalists Joey Aquino, Luke Baxter, Kelly Bouslaiby, Hollis Dohr, Asa Ferguson, Hannah Franklin, Elija Hall, Habin Lee, Arjang Mahdavi, Ehvinny Mora, Alexander Villaseñor, and Aryana Williams, this meant digging through personal experiences to understand characters whose lives are often very different from their own. To do so, they underwent 16 hours of training with Program Advisor Andi Chapman. They received one-onone coaching in text analysis, character study, and vocal and physical technique. They also worked together as an ensemble, learning how to collaborate and support one another as artists.

“The competition is a continuation of the idea that Center Theatre Group is here to support great art and great artists. We pass the torch to a new generation of artists. Each year, I am amazed by the complexity, emotion, and understanding this new generation brings to Wilson’s characters,” said Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. This complexity and understanding was on full display throughout the regional finals. First-place finalist Aryana Williams took on the role of Louise from Seven Guitars, imbuing the character with raw, world-weary experience and cutting humor. Alexander Villaseñor, who took second place, brought to life Youngblood from Jitney, a character determined to provide for his girlfriend and family. And third-place finalist Elija Hall, who played Tonya from King Hedley II, shook the audience with her uninhibited depiction of a woman choosing not to have a child.
The top two performers traveled to New York in May to perform in the national finals at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway—a special honor for first-place finalist Aryana Williams. Having come in third in last year’s competition, Williams finally had her chance to speak Wilson’s words on the Great White Way. Her journey is representative of what the August Wilson Competition is all about: experience, understanding, and growth.

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD INTRODUCING THE COMPANIES BEHIND BLOCK PARTY AT THE KIRK DOUGLAS THEATRE BLOCK PARTY IS OUR NEW CELEBRATION OF LOS ANGELES THEATRE. In January, we announced that we would be collaborating with three local theatre companies to make this inaugural event at the Kirk Douglas Theatre a reality. Coeurage Theatre Company, The Fountain Theatre, and The Echo Theater Company are each one piece of the ecosystem that is Los Angeles theatre, and their stories are as vibrant and diverse as the city they call home. The youngest company to collaborate with us on Block Party is Coeurage Theatre Company. Founded in 2009 by a group of graduates from California State University, Fullerton, their name is derived from the French word for “heart.” It is a quality they bring to all their productions. In fact, a 2016 American Theatre Magazine story singled them out as “among the most theatrical of the many theatre companies in Los Angeles.” Coeurage extends that heart beyond the stage to their audiences. Operating on a pay-what-you-want business model, they “exist to make impassioned theatre available to all audiences,” said Coeurage Theatre Company Artistic Director Jeremy Lelliott. “We let every single patron who comes to our show choose their own ticket price for every single performance for every single production.” For our first Block Party, we’re taking a page from Coeurage’s book and offering a special pay-what-you-want preview for all three Block Party shows, the first of which was Coeurage’s production of Failure: A Love Story by Philip Dawkins. Failure tells the story of the Fail sisters and their ill-fated love affairs with the same man in a magical (and theatrical) Chicago of the 1920s. For Lelliott, it represents a vote of confidence in the work that Coeurage is doing. “It’s pretty remarkable that Center Theatre Group is putting, literally, their money where their mouths are and pointing to [the L.A. theatre] community and saying, Hey, everyone. Look over here. We believe in what these people are doing.” Failure: A Love Story played the Douglas April 14–23, 2017. The Fountain Theatre was founded in 1990 by co-Artistic Directors Deborah Lawlor and Stephen Sachs. From the beginning, they have been committed to presenting work that reflects the diversity of the city they call home. Located near a sleepy section of Hollywood, The Fountain Theatre makes its home near the corner of Fountain and Normandie.

My wealth. My priorities. My partner. You’ve spent your life accumulating wealth. And, no doubt, that wealth now takes many forms, sits in many places, and is managed by many advisors. Unfortunately, that kind of fragmentation creates gaps that can hold your wealth back from its full potential. The Private Bank can help. The Private Bank uses a proprietary approach called the LIFE Wealth Cycle to find those gaps—and help you achieve what is important to you.

FROM BAGHDAD TO SARAJEVO— AND BACK TO CENTER THEATRE GROUP An Interview with Playwright RAJIV JOSEPH
PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P 5
CTG_MTF_PROG_0517.indd 5
4/13/17 3:11 PM
“IT FEELS LIKE I’M COMING HOME TO THIS THEATRE because in many ways my career began here back in 2009,” said playwright Rajiv Joseph of returning to Center Theatre Group with the World premiere of Archduke. “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo was my first significant production,” he recalled. “We spent two consecutive springtimes in Los Angeles putting on that show”—first the World premiere at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in 2009, then a 2010 run at the Mark Taper Forum—“culminating in both the Pulitzer Prize finalist honor as well as its continued success on Broadway. I always look back on this place as where everything started for me.”
“What was always interesting to me was this idea of World War I being the sort of gateway between the 19TH and 20TH centuries, and that led to a sort of meditation for me on whether or not every century takes about 18 years, much like a person, to discover who and what it is,” said Joseph. “If that is the case, then we are in that exact moment right now...”
Center Theatre Group is proud to have provided a creative home for Joseph as his much lauded playwriting career was launching. Since then, he’s racked up honors including the Horton Foote Playwriting Award, Obie and Lucille Lortel Awards last year for Guards at the Taj, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Whiting Foundation, United States Artists, and the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. “To come back with the commission from Center Theatre Group that has become Archduke is a real gift for me because I love this theatre, I love the space of the Taper, and I’m really excited to see this new work on that stage,” said Joseph. But being back in our rehearsal rooms also reminded him of how far he’s come. “I remember when I was doing Bengal Tiger I was rewriting it so much, kind of radical rewrites every day, including even in the second staging of it at the Taper,” he said. “It made the play better. I approach writing in a different way now, and Archduke has come into the rehearsal process a little more fully formed than Bengal Tiger did at the time, and I think that speaks to what I’ve learned over the last eight years.” That doesn’t mean that Joseph had a straightforward path to forming Archduke into the play currently onstage at the Taper. He originally pitched Center Theatre Group’s artistic staff on a play about classical music. “I was interested in writing about two men, two composers, one an older and one a younger composer,” said Joseph. He decided to place the composers in Serbia in 1914, at the onset of World War I. “I thought maybe the younger composer’s brother is the young man who killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand—I had just known him from history class. And the more I started researching Gavrilo Princip, that story sort of took over, and the story of the composers no longer seemed quite so urgent and interesting.” Joseph thinks these twists and turns are key to the creative process. “I think when you start a play you’re writing about one thing, and that thing invariably changes, metamorphoses into something else,” he said. “I start out by writing a pretty conventional play, and it’s my hope that through those rewrites and through those circuitous routes that I take, the play becomes less conventional and becomes more interesting and unique and compelling.” Archduke also evolved as Joseph immersed himself in the history of the beginning of World War I. “This play is not a history lesson. It can’t be used as a means of saying, ‘This is what happened,’” said Joseph. “But a lot is rooted in what I’ve learned in my research. There was a time in the process where I was drifting away from fact, to an extent, and I had to pull back

suddenly. Because even though it’s an imaginative retelling of the story and there are some invented characters and there’s certainly invented intentions and dialogue and desires in the play, there was a point where I realized, I needed to at least honor some of the realities of these historical characters’ situation. And once I did that it actually liberated me.” Joseph’s research took him and director Giovanna Sardelli to Belgrade and Sarajevo last fall. “I felt like it was kind of crucial to get a firsthand look at the place and feel it in my bones,” said Joseph. “It helped me understand the place I was writing about and the people and the nationalistic attitude of that time and place a little bit better. There’s no way of ever really knowing it because it was a hundred years ago, and so it’s an imaginative process from beginning to end. But taking myself out of my comfort zone, putting me there, feeling that place, smelling it, experiencing it—that was a huge part in that process of making Archduke unique.” A highlight of their trip was an assassination tour of Sarajevo that they thought would simply be a walkthrough of Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s final motorcade trip. “Instead this young man took us to this bridge on a different side of Sarajevo, and then talked about the Ottoman Empire for about 40 minutes. He set the scene for us with the 200 years building up to 1914.” The tour “enmeshed us in the deep history of this incredible city,” said Joseph.
As the play was taking its final shape in the fall, the global order was undergoing yet another shift that was in some ways reminiscent of the time Joseph had been exploring in Archduke. “What was always interesting to me was this idea of World War I being the sort of gateway between the 19TH and 20TH centuries, and that led to a sort of meditation for me on whether or not every century takes about 18 years, much like a person, to discover who and what it is,” said Joseph. “If that is the case, then we are in that exact moment right now. So I was wondering, well before the US election, what is going to be the event that is going to usher us into the 21ST century?” It may or may not have happened already, added Joseph, but regardless, “there’s a real sense of uncertainty and dread that is part of our national conversation now, which plays into the relevance of this play,” he said. Joseph is hoping that audiences will walk away from Archduke feeling like World War I is relevant. “Growing up, whenever I read about World War I, it felt like this ancient, different idea. The people involved and the nations involved and the conflicts involved were not contemporary in any way, shape, or form,” said Joseph. “But I think it’s useful to look at how politics, power, individuals, humanity—these things change a lot less than we give them credit for. I hope people leaving the theatre will be talking about how similar our situation might be to a few 19-year-old Serbian guys in 1914.”

The judgment of an untested president could be all that stands between us and WWIII. As Soviet nuclear missiles move ever closer to Cuba, President John F. Kennedy must chart a course between conflicting counsel and unparalleled emotional stakes to prevent nuclear annihilation. The newly-minted U.S. President is put to the ultimate test in this riveting original commission from David Rambo (Empire, C.S.I.).
UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL L.A. Theatre Works has entertained the world for over 40 years with our signature radio theatre format.

For over 20 years, they have produced works from laudable playwrights such as Athol Fugard, Tanya Saracho, and Tarell Alvin McCraney (who is coming to the Taper soon with Head of Passes). For Block Party, they will be presenting their 2015 production of Citizen: An American Lyric. Citizen is an adaptation of Claudia Rankine’s book by the same name, and uses interviews, first-hand accounts, and poetry to explore racism in the Unites States. Stephen Sachs (who also wrote the adaptation) is excited to bring this production to the Douglas stage. “[Center Theatre Group] is being incredibly generous to open its doors, and its resources, to allow us as theatre artists to expand our artistic vision of what the piece could be,” he said. Citizen: An American Lyric is onstage at the Douglas April 28 – May 7, 2017. The Echo Theater Company is a playwright’s theatre company. Since 1997, they have presented 48 Word premieres by playwrights like Sarah Ruhl, Adam Rapp, Tommy Smith, and Sheila Callaghan at their space in the Atwater Village Theatre complex. “Our mission is to nurture playwrights and produce and present them at any and all levels,” said Echo Theater Company Artistic Director Chris Fields. “We do readings, we do workshops, we do full productions, and we emphasize the relationship with the playwright.” It’s a tradition they continue as they remount Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel for Block Party. Written when Spiegel was only 21 years old, it tells the tale of two high school seniors, an unwanted pregnancy, and the obstacles facing young women in America. As an added bonus for those who missed it the first time, this represents an opportunity for Los Angeles audiences to see the 2016 Ovation Award-winning production for Best Production of a Play (Intimate Theatre). Closing out the party, Dry Land plays the Douglas May 12–21, 2017.
