Dear Audience Member, The shows we have onstage this summer at Center Theatre Group showcase a few of our ongoing partnerships with theatres around the world. London’s Royal National Theatre is bringing their acclaimed production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time to the Ahmanson Theatre, and we’re happy to have them back after launching 2012’s national tour of War Horse together. The National is also one of four theatres around the world we’ll be co-commissioning new work with as part of our Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative (read more on page 15). Chicago’s Goodman Theatre is also a new co-commissioning partner we’ll be working with through the Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative. We’re producing the World premiere production of Lauren Yee’s King of the Yees in association with the Goodman this summer at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, and we’re looking forward to supporting the creation of new work by more great American playwrights together in the coming decade. Finally, we are bringing the Manhattan Theatre Club production of Heisenberg to the Mark Taper Forum directly from Broadway, starring Denis Arndt and Mary-Louise Parker. We’ve prided ourselves on keeping the pipeline open from Los Angeles to Broadway—and from Broadway to Los Angeles—for over 50 years now, and Heisenberg is part of a long tradition that benefits audiences on both coasts. It’s you, our audiences, who make these partnerships possible by coming out to the theatre to see the broad range of shows we produce and present. Thanks for being here. Sincerely,

Michael Ritchie artistic director, center theatre group

Starry actors. Hilarious storytelling. Inspiring young artists. Big, brash musical numbers. Supportive patrons. Great theatre. Center Theatre Group’s 50 Celebration on May 20, 2017 brought together the best elements from our 50-year history to create an unforgettable evening in support of the next 50 years of Los Angeles theatre. TH

ryan miller /capture imaging.

From the pre-show reception on The Music Center Plaza and the celebrity-studded performances at the Ahmanson Theatre (produced and directed by Robert H. Egan) through the immersive dining experience at Grand Park, guests were treated to a journey through our past as well as a glimpse into our future.

rich polk /getty images for center theatre group.

The past came courtesy of Center Theatre Group veteran performers including Annette Bening, Alfred Molina, Phylicia Rashad, and Frank Langella. Langella starred in the first production at the Mark Taper Forum, The Devils. He recalled, with glee, celebrities and dignitaries, including Ronald Reagan, walking out of the opening night performance: “I played my final scene to a sea of abandoned furniture and Natalie Wood in the front row.” Center Theatre Group’s role in creating some of the most important work in 20 -century American theatre was front and center throughout the show. Reprising his 1978 role of El Pachuco, Edward James Olmos performed the opening monologue from Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit, and Matthew Broderick performed a scene from Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs on the same stage where he originated the role in the 1982 World premiere. Thomas Sadoski, Annette Bening, Charlie Hofheimer, and Paul Oakley Stovall performed the final scene of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America as a tribute to a play that was developed at Center Theatre Group and performed for the first time in full at the Mark Taper Forum. “The 50 Celebration was everything we hoped it would be,” said Sue Tsao, who, along with Robert Greenblatt, served as 50 Celebration Co-Chair. “The event was over 50 years in the making, and well over a year in the planning. Now it has set the stage for 50 more years of great theatre in our city.” TH

TH

The final words of that scene also encapsulated another major theme of the evening: “The Great Work Begins.” Two young women who participated in the August Wilson Monologue Competition performed alongside the stars—2017 National Finalist Aryana Williams performed a piece from Seven Guitars, while 2015 National Finalist Shaila Essley performed an original monologue that imagined the Los Angeles stage 50 years in the future. In his remarks before the closing of the performance, Artistic Director Michael Ritchie discussed the incredible impact of Center Theatre Group’s work in Los Angeles, across the country, and around the world.

Jennifer Hudson’s powerful rendition of “I Know Where I’ve Been” from NBC’s Hairspray Live! brought down the house and captured the evening’s melding of past, present, and future, as she proclaimed, “I know where I’m going…I know where I’ve been.”

Escorted by legendary Los Angeles band Ozomatli, donors and their guests crossed Grand Avenue for more festivities following the performance. Patina Restaurant Group’s Joachim Splichal brought together some of the most lauded chefs in L.A. to create a feast under the stars. Guests were then delighted by a 10-minute video mapping art piece projected onto City Hall. The original piece was created by artist Kate Johnson with technical producer Brite Ideas, and told Center Theatre Group’s story through iconic images. Funds raised from the 50 Anniversary Celebration will support Center Theatre Group’s world-class productions, innovative education and community programs, new work, and emerging artists for the next 50 years—and beyond— of extraordinary theatre. GOSSIP, CHEESE, AND THEATRE IN BOYLE HEIGHTS

Across the street from Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights, tucked tightly onto a corner, is a very small bar. And although it’s early on a Sunday evening, inside the very small bar is a very big party. The young, diverse crowd is dancing to 1980s pop, drinking sangria, and gossiping in English and Spanish. It is quintessentially Los Angeles.

Center Theatre Group Community Partnerships Associate Alejandra Cisneros, who is directing all of the Chisme y Queso pieces, is one of those artists. “I think a lot of young directors, because there’s a lack of space within L.A., need to bring life and work to other spaces,” she said. “Doing more site-specific work, marrying the arts with community engagement, and finding your tribe is one of the only ways that, as a young artist, you can move forward in your career.”

This is the setting of Chisme y Queso, an event series hosted The participating writers, who are being mentored by Center by Center Theatre Group in partnership with Boyle Heights bar Theatre Group Resident Artist Naomi Iizuka, agreed that Eastside Luv. On six Sundays this spring, patrons and artists Chisme y Queso is moving both their careers and craft forward. gathered to share anonymously their own chisme—gossip— “It forces me to think on my feet and write as truthfully as and have it performed onstage (atop the bar) by local actors. possible, because the audience really responds when they see Alongside the improvised chisme, the actors performed skits a piece onstage that could come out of their own experiences,” by up-and-coming writers from around Los Angeles. said writer Diana Burbano. Chisme y Queso—which is one part of a two-year community initiative in Boyle Heights funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation—allows Center Theatre Group to experiment with our programming, invest in the future of young Los Angeles actors, writers, and directors, and connect our neighbors with us and with theatre in a nontraditional setting. “We are so used to our spaces being our three theatres, but community programs allow us to create new spaces in Boyle Heights, like The Shop, our costume and props shop, the libraries, where we present monthly play readings, and now Eastside Luv,” said Center Theatre Group Community Partnerships Director Jesus Reyes. Chisme y Queso is a natural extension of the community programs and partnerships we’ve been building in Boyle Heights over the past four years. Plus, added Reyes, “This program

also expands our reach in terms of the kinds of artists we work with and where those artists are in their careers.”

This is exactly why the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is supporting the program. “Our Building Demand for the Arts grants fund the placement of artists at the center of institutional efforts to build meaningful, long-lasting relationships with

communities,” said Program Director for the Arts Maurine Knighton. “At their best, these projects help artists and communities co-create cultural programs that reflect authentic relationships and mutual concern. Chisme y Queso does just that, weaving together playwriting, performance, and music into a rich tapestry that reflects the interests of local residents.”

The relationship between community and artists is what makes Chisme a totally unique theatrical experience. The event begins with Community Liaison and MC Alexis de la Rocha inviting the audience to write down their own chisme on coasters. Throughout the evening, chisme is chosen out of a jar, and the actors must transform the stories into performance, using the few props they have on hand. The writers’ short skits are interspersed among the improvised chisme. It’s a whirlwind performance as the actors shift in

and out of myriad characters, from jilted girlfriends to arthritic old men. The audience is unbridled in their laughter and enjoyment, as their stories are performed with not only a sense of humor, but with honesty and sensitivity. At the end of the evening, the writer of the best chisme is awarded a bottle of wine, tickets to a Center Theatre Group show, and a large block of queso fresco— fresh Mexican cheese. If there’s an overarching message we hope audiences take away, it’s that “storytelling isn’t just what’s on a stage,” said Cisneros. “When you tell stories of your day, when you tell stories of your week, that is performance.”

But at the heart of Chisme y Queso—right alongside Center Theatre Group’s desire to engage with community, nurture young artists, and bring theatre into people’s everyday lives—is joy. “There’s just something about shared laughter,” said Cisneros.

Introducing our new Associate Artists: Sir Matthew Bourne, Danai Gurira, and Anna D. Shapiro Three artists working at the top of their game—choreographer/director Sir Matthew Bourne, playwright Danai Gurira, and director Anna D. Shapiro—are becoming an integral part of the Center Theatre Group artistic family for the next five years. We have supported and produced their work on all three of our stages in the past; now, we are formalizing and expanding our relationships by bringing them on as Associate Artists. In this new capacity, they’ll be sharing their talents with our theatres and helping us identify and collaborate with other artists of promise from around the globe.

“Center Theatre Group has felt very much like my company, New Adventures’, home-away-from-home in North America since our first visit with Swan Lake almost exactly 20 years ago,” said Bourne—whose Red Shoes comes to the Ahmanson Theatre in September, and whose work has appeared regularly at the Ahmanson since 1997. “I look forward to building on our special relationship, developing ideas, and further contributing to the extraordinary work Center Theatre Group delivers for artists, audiences, and communities.” Danai Gurira, whose plays Eclipsed, In the Continuum, and The Convert all played the Kirk Douglas Theatre, also pointed to a feeling of being at home here.

(top – bottom): Sir Matthew Bourne, Danai Gurira, and Anna D. Shapiro.

“Center Theatre Group is already a creative home to me and has facilitated my voice in so many ways,” she said. “I look forward

to chartering more artistic terrain during the next years ahead. I’m excited about what we will discover.”

Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director of Chicago’s renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company, who directed August: Osage County at the Ahmanson and A Parallelogram at the Mark Taper Forum, touted both the personal and the institutional connections she’ll be making here. “This expanded

relationship creates a great opportunity to build a bridge between Chicago and Los Angeles, where many of our ensemble members live and work, allowing for more cross-collaboration between two like-minded theatres and exciting opportunities for Steppenwolf to make connections with new artists, which can only enhance the important work we’re doing at home,” she said.

Center Theatre Group Joins Forces with Top Playwrights and Theatres Some of the greatest and most innovative playwrights in American theatre have written major new works commissioned by Center Theatre Group, from Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit and Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 to Rajiv Joseph’s Archduke. As we celebrate our 50 Anniversary, we are committing ourselves to doing more to support the creation and production of groundbreaking art. We are partnering with four internationally renowned theatres to bring the new work of a diverse, talented group of artists— including Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights Lynn Nottage and Paula Vogel—to our stages over the next decade. These partnerships will also connect us formally with Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, London’s Royal Court Theatre and National Theatre, and New York’s Second Stage Theater, which now owns the Helen Hayes Theater on Broadway. TH

A $1 million grant from the Edgerton Foundation is making these new theatre partnerships possible. The Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative will support Center Theatre Group in commissioning at least two shows annually with each of the four theatres over the next decade. “In recognition of Center Theatre Group’s long-standing mission to develop new art for the American stage, we are excited to offer commissioning funds for more than 50 new plays in the Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative,” said Edgerton Foundation President Brad Edgerton, MD. “By jointly developing each of these new plays with two talented theatre staffs, we hope to increase the number of productions that will journey

ANNOUNCING MAJOR NEW PARTNERSHIPS IN HONOR OF OUR 50 ANNIVERSARY WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE EDGERTON FOUNDATION TH

to many regional theatres, Broadway, and the West End.” In addition to Nottage and Vogel—both of whom recently made their Broadway debuts with Sweat and Indecent, respectively—co-commissioned playwrights include Jon Robin Baitz (Vicuña, Other Desert Cities), Lisa Kron (Fun Home), and Young Jean Lee, whose Straight White Men will bow on Broadway next year.

“The Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative is allowing us to make bigger, bolder investments in some of the world’s best playwrights,” said Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. “Co-commissioning with top theatres in the U.S. and London allows us to put our resources together in support of the creation and production of new work around the world—with a clear path to Broadway thanks to our new connection to Second Stage and their Helen Hayes Theater.” Ritchie is bullish on what this means for the future of Center Theatre Group, Los Angeles theatre, and our art form. “These partnerships are setting an artistic foundation for the next 50 years of our company,” he said. “We’re creating a new model for global collaboration that ensures that artists get the creative and financial support they need to do their best work, and that nonprofit theatres get the resources they need to build and sustain relationships with top artists. Everyone benefits—most of all the audiences who will get to experience a wide range of terrific work on our stages.” PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE 15
