FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Welcome to Center Theatre Group It’s not often that a play has all of New York and London in stitches for years on end—but in this case, you are at that play. Sit back, relax, and have a great time. The Play That Goes Wrong is pure theatrical fun and a celebration of everything that can go wrong onstage. (And as a long-time stage manager, I’ve seen it all.) With a slew of awards on both sides of the Atlantic and praise from audiences and newspapers alike, this is bound to be the most hilarious thing you’ll see at the Ahmanson…this month. There are many more laughs to come as our 2019/20 Season begins in September. The fall brings John Leguizamo and Mike Birbiglia to the Ahmanson direct from Broadway with two achingly humorous stories of fatherhood. And the Mark Taper Forum Season starts off with A Play Is a Poem, a collection of five very funny one-acts by celebrated playwright and filmmaker Ethan Coen, while our opening production at the Kirk Douglas Theatre features Bill Irwin (an extraordinary actor and classically trained clown) finding the hilarity in Samuel Beckett’s existentialism in On Beckett. I hope you have a great visit to the theatre today and that you’ll be back again next season at the Ahmanson, the Taper, and the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. From Leguizamo, Birbiglia, and Coen to Sting, Diane Paulus, Heidi Schreck, and more, wonderful theatre is coming your way. Sincerely,
Michael Ritchie

AROUND CENTER THEATRE GROUP WELCOMING OUR NEW MANAGING DIRECTOR,
Meghan Pressman In July, Meghan Pressman joined Center Theatre Group as our new Managing Director/CEO. Pressman joins Center Theatre Group from Washington, D.C.’s Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, where she has served as Managing Director since 2014. Previously, Pressman served as Director of Development at Signature Theatre in New York City, as Associate Managing Director of Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and at organizations including Yale Repertory Theatre and Chicago Theatre for Young Audiences. “This is an amazing opportunity to build on Center Theatre Group’s legacy of artistic ambition and excellence, and to cultivate an audience as diverse and vibrant as Los Angeles,” said Pressman. “Center Theatre Group is really at a great, pivotal moment in its history, having already brought so many amazing works of theatre to audiences from all walks of life.” Photo by Teresa Castracane.
Playwright Paula Vogel Hosts ‘Bake-Offs’ With her play Indecent onstage at the Ahmanson June 5 – July 7, 2019, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel hosted three of her signature “bake-offs”—playwriting workshops that prepare participants to write a new work in 48 hours—while at Center Theatre Group. Vogel (front, right) hosted one bake-off for members of our L.A. Writers’ Workshop and staff members (pictured), a second for our donors, and a third for UCLA students.
FADIMAN FELLOW KAREN ZACARÍAS WORKS WITH ELAC STUDENTS Visions of Boyle Heights, a play created by students at East Los Angeles College as part of our ongoing partnership and initially presented as part of our Library Play Readings, had its closing performance on May 28, 2019 at a local community center. Playwright Karen Zacarías (middle row, second from left)—the current recipient of Center Theatre Group’s Fadiman Award, which is given annually to a writer of note and includes a short residency in L.A.—attended the production and participated in a conversation and Q&A with the student creators (pictured with their professor, James Buglewicz) after the show.

Disney Musicals in Schools Spreads Magic across L.A.
CENTER THEATRE GROUP & DISNEY THEATRICAL GROUP CELEBRATE OUR SECOND YEAR BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF OUR SCHOOLS
Since launching in New York City in 2009, Disney Musicals in Schools has impacted over 300 schools and tens of thousands of students all over the country. Disney Theatrical Group and Center Theatre Group just celebrated the end of our second year working together in Los Angeles. This year, five public elementary schools were selected to participate in a 17-week musical theatre residency. Each first-year school received performance rights to a Disney KIDS musical, educational support materials, and weekly visits from Center Theatre Group teaching artists to help them produce, direct, and choreograph their first show. In honor of the 10TH anniversary of the program, Disney also invited all of the first-year schools to attend a professional musical production and gave additional grants to all schools. Our first-year schools—all Title I elementary schools—represented communities across Los Angeles County, and most have not been able to produce musical theatre projects of this scale in the past. In April and May, they put on at least one full community performance (and some as many as six!) at their schools, and selected one number to showcase at the Student Share Celebration. The afternoon at the Ahmanson began with all of the students coming together to sing “It Starts with a Dream,” a song written by Disney legend Alan Menken for the Disney Musicals in Schools program. Host Aimee Carrero, who voices the title character in the animated Disney series Elena of Avalor,
Cantara Street Elementary performs “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from The Lion King KIDS. Photo by Ryan Miller/Capture Imaging.
On April 29, 2019, 250 local elementary school students sang and danced their hearts out on the Ahmanson Theatre stage for their friends and families, performing some of the tunes most beloved by children around the globe: songs from Disney musicals. Their journey to the Ahmanson for our 2019 Student Share Celebration began months ago, when their schools applied to take part in the Disney Musicals in Schools program at Center Theatre Group.
introduced each school group. A pair of educators and teaching artists from each school team prefaced their students’ performances by sharing how the program has changed lives and communities. They all agreed that in addition to learning theatre skills, students have grown in myriad ways—gaining self-confidence and discipline as well as improving as readers, writers, and thinkers. “One of our cast members is new to the country and did not speak any English on the first day of school. Today, he has a speaking role in our production,” said Paula Landau, the school coordinator at Saturn Street Elementary in Mid-City. Added Amanda Velez-Buck, a teacher at Wild Rose School of Creative Arts in Monrovia, “Being part of this show is a first-time experience for many of our students and staff. The affordability of taking singing, dancing, or acting lessons is outside what many of our students’ families can provide. Seeing the students thrive when they are encouraged to express themselves in the arts has been exciting and fulfilling.” Sandra Mijarez, a teacher at Breed Street Elementary in Boyle Heights, said that the effects have not been limited to the students, either. “Teachers, students, parents, and administration alike, all discovered that we could accept a challenge, persevere, learn and still have a great time,” she said. “We all came away with a sense of family and community that is much stronger than before.” Read the rest of the story and see more photos at CTGLA.org/blog.

CENTER THEATRE GROUP’S STUDENT AMBASSADORS LEARN, EARN, AND PRACTICE THEIR SKILLS
The Next Generation of ARTS LEADERS Starts Here DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST REAL PAYDAY? The work leading up to it probably (hopefully) involved some kind of learning experience and skills acquired, but probably didn’t teach you event planning, marketing, and audience engagement, plus offer professional development opportunities in group consensus, time management, and leadership style. But 15 Los Angeles County high school students in Center Theatre Group’s Student Ambassador Program this spring got all this and more—including a stipend. Over the course of 60 hours, they planned, produced, and marketed a Youth Summit for 50 of their peers (anchored by the Taper production of Lackawanna Blues) alongside theatre professionals, who shared their arts management philosophies and abilities. “This is a unique opportunity that gives you the chance to meet amazing people, improve skills, and discover a new side of yourself,” said Ambassador Andy V. Added Ambassador Christopher J., “We not only got to plan a Youth Summit—but also to meet so many new people, go to different events, and gain more connections than we may have had before the program. This program, along with other things in my life this past year, has changed me as a person drastically, and I cannot be more grateful.” The Student Ambassador Program is unlike most preprofessional arts training in its emphasis on management and leadership; students don’t need to have any theatre experience to participate, just an enthusiasm for the arts and a desire to grow.
“This comes down to how Center Theatre Group is investing in the next generation of arts professionals,” said Emerging Artists and Arts Professionals Program Manager Felipe M. Sanchez. “Who is going to manage our theatre? Who is going to market our art? Who will be the advocates for seeing theatre in our communities?” Hopefully the Ambassadors will do all this. But ultimately, they “learn skills they can translate into any field,” said Sanchez. So while the experience led up to the Youth Summit—a hugely successful evening of theatre engagement activities—the culminating celebration was about the students creating leadership manifestos: “I am a leader who believes that everyone has a voice and deserves to be heard,” wrote Ambassador Sherry I. “I will always be an advocate for those who are in need, those who can’t eat or sleep under a roof, those who need to realize that harm they’ve caused to another. But most importantly, those who are in need of peace,” wrote Ambassador Julian M. “I am a leader who believes in everyone, and that everyone has potential to be who they want to be,” wrote Ambassador Jessica C. Sanchez is confident that the students will live up to their manifestos, and more. “I truly believe they are going to come out ahead, as stronger and better leaders, by having this experience at an early age and being able to take that to college and beyond,” he said.

Two August Wilson Monologue Competition Alumni in the Midst of their Big Breaks Meet Current High School Participants in New York
“It was almost like talking into the mirror,” said Wayne Mackins of being on the “A” side of a post-show Q&A session with high school students from around the country on a rainy spring night in New York City. Mackins, a senior at Fordham University, is currently making his Broadway debut as an ensemble member in The Prom. But in 2014, he was on the “Q” side of things as a national finalist in the August Wilson Monologue Competition. As the Los Angeles home of the National August Wilson Monologue Competition, Center Theatre Group has helped hundreds of high school students from across our region hone their acting and storytelling skills. Each year, 12 of those students perform in the Los Angeles Regional Finals at the Mark Taper Forum, and a few advance to the nationals in New York. Just five years ago, Mackins was one of those students, and he continues to credit the training he received with helping prepare him for the rigors of Broadway.
“I remember the exact talkback I saw when [director, longtime Wilson collaborator, and August Wilson Monologue Competition presenter] Kenny Leon took us to see Something Rotten! But this time it was more like a family reunion, passing on knowledge that I was taught and told to share,” said Mackins. Incredibly, Mackins was not the only Los Angeles August Wilson Monologue Competition alum to be performing in New York this spring—and to be paying forward the experience. Javen K. Crosby, who participated in the 2015 Los Angeles Regional Finals, took a break from rehearsals of Much Ado About Nothing at The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park to talk to our students as well. Crosby, a 2018 graduate of the UK’s Royal Welch College of Music and Drama, said that he still uses his Wilson monologue for auditions. (And it’s partly what got him the Much Ado About Nothing role.) Center Theatre Group Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact Leslie K. Johnson and other staff members have been bringing students to New York for the National Finals since 2011. But this was something really special.
(l–r) Dejean Deterville, Javen K. Crosby, and Mylah Eaton.
“I was struck with just a huge sense of pride seeing these two young men—Angelenos that we know—making their way as working artists,” said Johnson. “It was profoundly moving to me to see our students achieving, and to know that we had played a part. And while the focus of the program is not aimed at whether students go on to become working artists, it was a delightful fruition to see them realizing themselves and their artistry, and being able to continue to support and celebrate them—and watching them connect with the next students who are following in their footsteps.” The students themselves agreed. “It was incredible to see Wayne and Javen fearlessly follow their dreams in New York, and it encouraged me to continue to follow mine,” said Mylah Eaton, who was performing in New York for the first time—achieving a longtime dream—at the National Finals. Eaton would be graduating in June from CHAMPS Charter High School of the Arts, heading to the University of Southern California…and then who knows where next? PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE 13

A LETTER FROM
THE PRESIDENT Hello and welcome to The Murder at Haversham Manor. We are thrilled that the Cornley University Drama Society is performing in the USA. We can only apologise to those involved in the production of Equus originally scheduled for this week, which due to a clerical error, is now being performed in the Cornley University Gymnasium. We hope there are no hard feelings and we’ve left the vaulting horse out for you. The question everyone at Cornley has been asking is: are we ready for a venue of this size? The answer is “yes.” The cast and I rehearsed for weeks using only the best acting teachings to inspire us. We read that Sanford Meisner once said, “Acting is behaving truthfully,” so we immediately changed all the names in the play to our own names and cut the murder, the manor house setting and any other element that we hadn’t personally experienced. We then found the piece rather flat, and it only ran at 17 minutes. So we went back to the Meisner book and we realized the full quote was in fact: “Acting is behaving truthfully... under imaginary circumstances,” so we reinstated the cuts and we were then quickly back on track. We found the teachings of Michael Chekhov less confusing. He says, “An actor has to burn inside with an outer ease.” So that evening it was vindaloos all round at the Sunam Balti House on Cornley High Street. However, try as we did to not react to our burning insides, it was certainly noticeable that we were all in significant discomfort, which just goes to show how tough acting can be. At the end of the evening, Dennis was actually sick in the restaurant bathrooms. We always knew he was one of the weaker actors. All this hard work and preparation has left us with an ensemble piece that has achieved such critical acclaim as “VERY INTERESTING” from Mr. Harwood, esteemed head of Design Technology at Cornley University, and “RATHER UNSETTLING” from real-life police chief Mr. Greaves of the Cornley Volunteer Police Force. I’m sure that with a full audience, the piece will truly bring down the house.

Jonathan also performed with Emote, another local theater company, in A Midsummer Night’s Stamina, which featured a cast of 14 pedalling exercise bikes for the full two-hour performance.
SANDRA WILKINSON
FLORENCE COLLEYMOORE Touring debut! This is Sandra’s 11th season with the Cornley University Drama Society, during which she has proudly performed roles such as Snow White in Snow White and The Tall Broad Gentlemen, Virginia Woolf in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The Cow in Jack and the Bean. Sandra has been performing from a very young age, since her mother appeared in A Winter’s Tale pregnant.
MAX BENNETT
CECIL HAVERSHAM Touring debut! Max is in his first year at Cornley University where he is studying human geography and crime. He is an avid fan of films, and his favourite is The Legend of Bagger Vance, which he’s seen 27 times. This is Max’s first production with the Drama Society, and he is very glad to have donated a large portion of his recent inheritance to help the show reach Broadway.
DENNIS TYDE
PERKINS Touring debut! After failing the tryouts for the football, cricket, volleyball and basketball teams, Dennis decided to join the Drama Society. Dennis does not live in the Cornley halls of residence and commutes in daily from his parents’ house. He hopes the Society will give him the chance to meet like-minded people. Dennis’ only stage credit dates back to 1995 when he appeared in his primary school nativity. Credit: Shepherd.
ANNIE TWILLOIL
STAGE MANAGER Touring debut! The unsung hero of the Society, Annie has designed, built, painted, stage managed and costumed every single Society show in the last three years. Her hard work and dogged determination behind-the-scenes lies behind so much of the Society’s success. After The Murder at Haversham Manor, Annie will begin an internship at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
TREVOR WATSON
LIGHTING & SOUND OPERATOR Touring debut! Trevor is only participating in The Murder at Haversham Manor to earn much needed extra credit for his electronics module in order to pass his engineering course at Cornley University. Once he has passed the course, he will not continue to work with the Drama Society. Trevor credits his success to his sunny disposition and his positive outlook on life.

JEFFREY UPAH (General Manager, Ahmanson Theatre) has worked in management at Center Theatre Group since 2006 on more than 50 musicals, plays, and special events including both pre-Broadway productions and Broadway tours. Some of his favorites include Follies, God of Carnage, and The Black Rider (having previously worked on Robert Wilson productions in Boston, Houston, and Sao Paulo, Brazil). Prior to Center Theatre Group, he worked in various capacities at the Santa Fe Opera, Yale Repertory Theatre, American Repertory Theater, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, among others. GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre—including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts, and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989, Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.
MEGHAN PRESSMAN (Managing Director) joined Center Theatre Group as Managing Director in 2019. Previously, she served as Managing Director of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (D.C.), Director of Development for Signature Theatre (N.Y.), and Associate Managing Director of PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P13
