Dear Audience Member, Thank you for joining us this holiday season for feel-good musicals that celebrate (and have some fun with) the art form. We’re lucky to have the extremely irreverent Something Rotten! at the Ahmanson. The story of a pair of Shakespeare’s contemporaries who are trying to write the world’s first musical, Something Rotten! is full of hilarious references to theatre history. And of course there’s another musical in L.A. this month: Spamilton at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. (You really thought I’d use this space to mention that other musical about Alexander Hamilton?) This is a show with a wild sense of humor; I hope you’re not laughing too hard to catch all of Gerard Alessandrini’s genius lyrics (and check out our interview with him on page 28). You’re going to leave the theatre smiling.
Sincerely,
Michael Ritchie

Before antagonizing the Bottom brothers in Something Rotten! at the Ahmanson Theatre, Shakespeare took himself out on the town, popping up around Los Angeles on @CTGLA’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter feeds. During the Dodgers’ World Series run he was spotted behind the counter at Philippe’s; we have not yet confirmed whether he ordered a single dip, double dip, or wet sandwich.
We’re grateful for Macy’s continued investment in our education programming. I need people who I can count on to help keep my financial life on course so I can focus on creating and sharing the “adventures” of classical music. City National shares my passion and is instrumental in helping me bring classical music to audiences all over the world. They enjoy being a part of what I do and love. WHAT’S IN A PLAY?
What do a theoretical physicist, a superhero, a teddy bear enthusiast, and a Los Angeles Times obituary writer have in common? They’ve all been guest experts at Center Theatre Group’s L.A. Writers’ Workshop Salon.
Sometimes, Conversations with Experts at the L.A. Writers’ Workshop Salon
Every year, the L.A. Writers’ Workshop supports seven Los Angeles playwrights in the creation of a new work from start to finish. Among the first steps on this journey is the L.A. Writers’ Workshop Salon—a weekendlong event each fall that brings together writers and local experts in the subjects of their plays for conversation and inspiration. The seeds of the Salon begin with the writers. After they agree to become members of the coming year’s Writers’ Workshop, they let Center Theatre Group Literary Manager Joy Meads know what topics they might be interested in writing about. From there, Meads and her intrepid Graduate Student Fellow (part of our professional internship program) begin the search for experts who might shine a light on those topics. Those topics include everything from the conventions of marriage and sex in Vietnam during the French colonial period to CIA operations in the Middle East. Sometimes, a playwright knows exactly whom they need to talk to. But more often than not, they just have an idea of a time, place, or situation they want to explore. Which is why the search for appropriate experts often begins with some deep and persistent Googling.

“We look for experts who are noteworthy in their field for their depth of knowledge and sharp insight. But that alone isn’t enough—we want to find people who are deeply passionate about the subject, who can speak eloquently about why it matters, or why it fascinates them so deeply,” said Meads. It’s also about finding two experts who will complement each other. “We typically pair experts from different fields of expertise, because of the Continues on page 14

strange alchemy that emerges from the collision of disparate ideas and viewpoints. Encounters of this kind have the potential to shake us from our habitual ways of seeing the world, reveal unexpected connections, and spark new ideas.” Over the years, the experts have been as diverse as the plays that come out of the Workshop. There have been alien researchers, professors of Egyptology, hypnotists, and even a few celebrities such as comedian Leslie Jones and Los Angeles Times food critic Jonathan Gold. Each expert session lasts for an hour and a half and is facilitated by the individual playwrights, typically with two experts participating. The playwright begins by sharing what they know about the subject of their play at that exact moment. It can be as elaborate as a detailed outline of the plot, or as vague as a half-remembered dream. After, the experts introduce themselves—occasionally sharing a more formal presentation like a PowerPoint—and then the playwright leads a question-and-answer session. A Salon session with Miguel Ordenana, the biologist who first discovered P-22, the famous mountain lion of Griffith Park, yielded a bounty of facts about mountain lions in general and P-22 in particular. Participants learned that mountain lions roamed the earth even before the Ice Age and have outlived contemporaries like the sabertooth cat because they’re remarkably adaptable and can live in almost any ecosystem. They also learned that P-22 is the son of P-1, a mountain lion whose territory is west of the 405; to get to Griffith Park, P-22 had to cross both the 405 and 101 freeways. P-22 also subsequently dodged death after eating a koala at the zoo thanks to his celebrity. While each expert is there to speak to a specific playwright, everyone is invited to ask questions. As a result, ideas from the Salon often find their way into multiple plays from the workshop. But the playwrights also may choose to go in an entirely different
direction. “Our goal for the Writers’ Workshop Salon is to support the playwrights as they write the play they feel inspired or compelled to write, whatever form that takes,” said Meads. “I like to think of this weekend as a chance to marinate in a hearty stew of characters and ideas.” Sometimes, that marinade is deeply infused in the play’s final flavors. In playwright Bekah Brunstetter’s (NBC’s This is Us, The Cake) new play, Going to a Place Where You Already Are, a husband and wife who question the existence of heaven are forced to consider the alternative when one of them has a near-death experience. Its title is a direct quote from one of Brunstetter’s experts in the Salon, David Kessler, an expert on death and dying who developed the stages of grief with psychiatrist Elizabeth Kübler-Ross. (Kessler is a frequent Salon guest who has helped a number of playwrights with their work over the years.) The L.A. Writers’ Workshop is responsible for over 50 plays over the past 12 years, many of which have been produced at theatres around the country. Alumni include writers such as Marco Ramirez (Netflix’s The Defenders, The Royale), Sheila Callaghan (Hulu’s Casual, Women Laughing Alone with Salad), and Tanya Saracho (ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder, Our Lady of the Underpass), to name a few. It represents a collection of some of the most well produced theatre artists in the country, and—we like to think—one of the most diverse group of experts from around Los Angeles.

What does it take to get two dozen college students out of bed on a Saturday morning? For the intrepid young people who participated in our very first Theatre Crash Course for college students, it was as simple as a Pulitzer Prize-winning play and a chance to learn some new skills from the pros. Center Theatre Group has been hosting high school students at our popular Theatre Crash Courses for four years. It’s a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a single play through the arts of acting/ directing, lighting/scenic design, or costume design for

a few hours. They come away with hands-on experience and a better understanding of how the many different elements of a professional production come together. Last year, we created a version designed for educators for the first time and found that the model—which is all about exploration and trying something new—was just as successful. College theatre students, who don’t often get to step outside their area of study, or must commit to an entire semester in order to do so, were a natural fit for the next expansion of the Theatre Crash Course. And Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Water by the Spoonful (onstage at the Mark Taper Forum January 31 – March 11, 2018) was the perfect play for the age group.
A Theatre Crash Course participant and Center Theatre Group Teaching Artist Juan Parada.
While many of their peers were still sleeping on a Saturday in late September, the students gathered with Center Theatre Group Teaching Artists to begin the Crash Course with a dramaturgical overview of the play. After a group reading of a few selected scenes, they broke into teams of actors/directors, lighting/scenic designers, and costume designers. Continues on page 18

Acting students and aspiring stage managers tried their hands at design, and young designers got to experience theatre in front of the curtain rather than behind it. “I thought I should not tunnel-vision myself. As an actor, it may be valuable for me to know some scenic design,” explained one participant who got outside their comfort zone.
“I was surprised by how quickly the students picked up the concepts we were teaching them. This crash course is fast and furious, and we cover a lot of information in a short amount of time,” said Teaching Artist Michelle Bush, who led the scenic designers. “They were quick on their feet and rolled with the punches. Which is exactly how you need to be when creating theatre.”
The actors and directors talked about how they might approach the play, chose scenes that resonated with them, and then cast and rehearsed them. The lighting and scenic designers talked through how the five senses are represented in the script, plotted out how to evoke them onstage, and then experimented with creating shadowboxes, projections, and lighting. The costume designers learned about color theory, discussed the characters, researched the show’s 2009 setting, and put it all together in design concept collages. During lunch, everyone came together for a backstage tour of the Taper. The day ended with a “share-out” where each group presented their artistic choices and the actors and directors staged two scenes.
The Teaching Artists were inspired by seeing the students stretch themselves, too. “Providing students who don’t study technical theatre a glimpse behind the curtain and opening their eyes to careers as costume designers, stitchers, drapers, and craftspeople was exciting,” said Teaching Artist Manuel Prieto, who led the costume designers. “It was especially exciting to show them that there are many sustainable roles that go beyond the stage.” Thanks to the support of Center Theatre Group donors, the Theatre Crash Course was entirely free to participants—who will also receive free tickets to Water by the Spoonful at the Taper next year.

hits the road ALMOST EVERY PERFORMANCE YOU SEE ONSTAGE AT CENTER THEATRE GROUP IS A COLLABORATION. And we’re not just talking about the obvious— the team of actors, writers, directors, producers, designers, and artisans who have come together for the show’s run. More often than not, the production you’re seeing took collaboration among theatre companies around the country (and even the world) that was carefully constructed and coordinated to make it possible for Los Angeles audiences to enjoy the best of the best of the art form. Center Theatre Group frequently partners with theatres around the country on co-productions. Recent partnerships include this summer’s King of the Yees at the Kirk Douglas Theatre (a World premiere co-production with the Goodman Theatre in Chicago), and our upcoming co-commissions with the Goodman, Second Stage in New York, and the Royal Court Theatre and National Theatre in London. We also partner regularly with local Los Angeles theatres,
including remounting recent shows through Block Party at the Douglas. But in fall 2016 and fall 2017, we embarked on a more unusual endeavor for a nonprofit regional theatre: producing our own small tours, first for Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge and now for Bright Star. “As the original producer of these tours, we don’t hand off the play to the next theatre,” said Center Theatre Group Producing Director Douglas C. Baker. “Instead, we remain the producer and employer of the show and its cast and crew. Doing so can help us defray the cost of producing a show, including production and rehearsal costs, while getting our brand out into the world.” After playing the Ahmanson, A View From The Bridge headed to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Bright Star heads to San Francisco’s Curran Theater and Salt Lake City’s Pioneer Theatre Company after L.A. Continues on page 22

“I stay in touch with colleagues scattered around the country who produce or present largescale work,” explained Baker. “Through those relationships, I discover we have a mutual interest in a show or artists. That’s where the kernel of an idea to tour a production begins.” In many cases, these shows might not make it beyond New York or Los Angeles otherwise. “Many of our partner theatres typically present national tours that are produced by New York or London commercial producers,” said Baker. “They know they can rely on Center Theatre Group to bring them a show that’s every bit as high-quality. And since we are producing, the artists are comfortable with the project proceeding, too.”
Producing tours also helps Center Theatre Group create and sustain long-term relationships with artists. Baker pointed to Caroline, or Change, which we remounted as a Center Theatre Group production at the Ahmanson in 2004 and then toured to the Curran after it closed on Broadway. Caroline, or Change was a continuation of book and lyrics writer Tony Kushner and director George C. Wolfe’s long histories at Center Theatre Group and also helped set the stage for composer Jeanine Tesori to return to the Ahmanson with Fun Home and the upcoming Soft Power. “It was challenging to produce, but a powerful, wonderful show,”
said Baker. “Had we not done it, it wouldn’t have been seen on this coast with a full-scale Broadway physical production and with original Broadway star Tonya Pinkins.” Baker also pointed to Neil Simon’s The Dinner Party, which had its World premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in 1999, as another example of a successful tour produced by Center Theatre Group. “It was a very popular show at the Taper with John Ritter and Henry Winkler,” said Baker. “I knew that Neil Simon’s shows had had successful pre-Broadway runs in Washington, D.C., and I knew the Kennedy Center needed a show. So I approached John and Henry about going to Washington, and I approached the Kennedy Center, and everyone said yes. So we toured the show to the Kennedy Center, and it was a big hit there. Neil Simon and his commercial producer hadn’t been planning to bring it to Broadway, but they saw the show was such a hit that they decided to take it to Broadway, and it ended up playing there for a year. To this day, whenever I run into Henry Winkler, as I did on an airplane recently, Henry smiles broadly when we reminisce about our Dinner Party journey.” While touring these shows bring a lot of benefits, they also involve a massive amount of work for the Center Theatre Group management, production, and finance teams. “We all have day jobs,” joked Baker about running three theatres in Los Angeles simultaneously, “and it’s not like we stop producing in Los Angeles while a show is on tour. It’s kind of like adding on another theatre. It really maxes out our resources and our staff.” At the end of the day, the most important people who benefit are audience members. “A View From The Bridge was Ivo van Hove’s first time on the West Coast,” said Baker. “And we’re very fortunate to be working on Bright Star with two more of the best artists in the world in Steve Martin and Edie Brickell.”

On a Thursday afternoon in September 2017, Kirsten Opstad’s fifth period theatre class at Culver City High School was on the move. To Pittsburgh’s Hill District, 1969. Then the late 1940s. Then the 1950s. And finally all the way back to 1904. Their guides were Center Theatre Group Teaching Artist Cecil Burroughs and legendary playwright August Wilson, both visiting the classroom—Burroughs in person and Wilson through his work— to introduce students to the August Wilson Monologue Competition.
ON THE MOVE WITH AUGUST WILSON This Fall, We Brought the Famous Playwright’s Monologues into Classrooms Across L.A.
The August Wilson Program is presented by the Center Theatre Group Affiliates, and also receives generous support from Center Theatre Group’s Corporate Circle, Joseph Drown Foundation, the Rosenthal Family Foundation, and Hope Landis Warner.
Over the past six years, hundreds of young people across Southern California have grown as actors and storytellers thanks to the August Wilson Monologue Competition. Participating high school students embark on an entirely free educational journey that includes workshops and auditions with theatre professionals—all while immersing themselves in Wilson’s life and world. This year, in an effort to encourage more students to participate, we sent Teaching Artists—all working actors—out into schools to bring Wilson’s words to life and give students a glimpse of what the Competition entails. “I discovered Wilson in high school from the play Fences, which put me on the path to pursue theatre,” said Center Theatre Group Director of Education Tyrone Davis in explaining the importance of bringing Wilson into classrooms. “When I discovered his work, it was my first time seeing my community onstage. I learned that theatre belonged to me as well.” That was also Burroughs’ goal in Opstad’s classroom. He opened his presentation with a very brief precis of Wilson’s life and his magnum opus, the 10 plays of The American Century Cycle, which chronicle the 20TH-century African-American experience. Then Burroughs announced that he’d be performing a monologue, “one that speaks to me and speaks to the struggle of the working man.” Instantly, Burroughs transformed himself into Sterling, a character from Wilson’s Two Trains Running who has just been released from jail and is looking for work. By the time he’d finished his monologue, the students had discovered one of the great joys of theatre and of Wilson’s work in particular: the thrill of recognition, of characters who talk and think and feel like we do. Then it was the students’ turn to perform a few more monologues—cold. Two students, back-to-back, read a monologue by Seven Guitars’ Red Carter in which he laments his inability to juggle seven girlfriends at once: “I tried to keep them separate and give them all a day of the week.” One young actor was jubilant, the other wistful; both got belly laughs from their peers. Two more students took on the part of Rose from Fences. Just before the bell rang, Burroughs made his more formal August Wilson Monologue Competition pitch: “It’s a great opportunity to see if this is something you’re interested in,” he told the students about performance and auditioning. “Get your feet wet!” For Burroughs, going into the classroom allows him to participate in “the great equalizer”—education. “The Monologue Competition opens kids’ eyes to new things and new experiences, and lets them know that there’s a whole world out there,” he said. Opstad, the classroom teacher, was thrilled to have him opening her students’ eyes. “I know that students respond differently to guests than to their regular teachers,” she said. “I thought it would be more meaningful if this opportunity was made known to them by people who know more about August Wilson and can speak to their experience as actors in a way that I can’t. And it was so cool because the students responded totally differently. Hands shot up to participate.”

Finding the Funny in Broadway’s Biggest Hit
An Interview with Spamilton Creator Gerard Alessandrini
“I DIDN’T SEE HAMILTON AND THINK,‘I’M THE GUY WHO’S GOING TO MAKE THIS FUNNY,’”
“THE MORE SACRED COW SOMETHING IS, THE MORE YOU SHOULD PARODY IT, AND THE FUNNIER IT’S GOING TO BE.”
recalled Gerard Alessandrini. “I saw the show and thought, ‘After 35 years of parodying all the other shows, I can’t let the biggest hit show in Broadway history get by me.’ At that point, I had no idea what I was going to make funny about it.” And thus Spamilton, which Alessandrini created, wrote, and directed, was born. Spamilton has been a hit in New York City and Chicago; now, it’s arrived in Los Angeles at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Alessandrini created the Off-Broadway revue Forbidden Broadway in 1982. He’d struck comic gold with his takes on songs from Phantom of the Opera and The Sound of Music to Mamma Mia! and Spring Awakening over the years. But he’d never seen anything quite like Hamilton.
“The more sacred cow something is, the more you should parody it, and the funnier it’s going to be,” said Alessandrini. “The stuff that isn’t sacred cow is boring. You want stuff that’s lauded and informative and poetic and important. What’s not ripe for parody is The Producers; it already is parody. The more lauded and important Hamilton was, the better it was for us.” 28 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

“It’s the biggest hit show I’ve experienced since I’ve been in New York,” said Alessandrini. “I’d never seen a show so lauded and revered by the media. It was everywhere you looked.” Alessandrini, like most everyone else, became a fan. But he wasn’t daunted by the show’s popularity or its historical, political, and musical significance.

Slightly more intimidating was the style, which is unlike the Sondheim/Rodgers & Hammerstein/ Andrew Lloyd Webber tunes Alessandrini is accustomed to spoofing. “It’s very contemporary in its writing,” said Alessandrini. “It’s not the milieu I was used to writing parodies for. I had to learn to write rap and swing and all the different types of music in Hamilton.” But with help from his partner, Glenn Bassett (who plays King George in Spamilton), Alessandrini figured it out. “It was like cracking a safe open,” he said. “Glenn showed me where the rhymes were in the rap—he sort of laid them out for me. Once I could see where Lin-Manuel Miranda’s rhymes fell and what the form was, I could slowly go through and try to spoof it.” In essence, he said, he was turning the lyrics and ideas of Hamilton “inside out.” Alessandrini also worked to make the comedy and parody of Spamilton as contemporary as the music. “I really feel comedy changes as much as fashion. It seems to change from year to year,” he said. “We’re in a period now where comedy is not as farcical as other eras but is broader in the verbal sense.” One liners have given way to comedic storytelling. “Instead of telling joke after
joke after joke, comics are telling their life story and getting jokes within that,” said Alessandrini. “That affected me, too, because in Spamilton I’m doing a through-line.” He added, “Comedy isn’t really dictated by the writer. It’s dictated by the audience. Who knows what comedy is? The audience will tell you if it’s funny or not.” Alessandrini is confident that Los Angeles audiences are going to get a lot of laughs out of Spamilton. “It’s going to be a very vibrant production,” he said, with a new cast “picked for their exuberance.” Plus, “people in
Los Angeles have great senses of humor. New Yorkers can be quite jaded. People in L.A. know how to enjoy life better, and everyone has a great sense of humor out there.” The Douglas is also the right theatre for this show. “It’s a theatre you can feel like you’re having a party at,” said Alessandrini, “and that’s what Spamilton is—a party.”
It also doesn’t hurt that Spamilton is running alongside the Los Angeles production of the show that inspired it. That said, “you don’t have to have seen Hamilton to enjoy Spamilton. You’ll laugh just as much,” said Alessandrini.

A MUSICIAN JUMPS INTO MUSICAL THEATRE An Interview with Wayne Kirkpatrick, Music & Lyrics
Q: You and Karey [Kirkpatrick, Wayne’s brother] had the initial idea for Something Rotten! 20 years ago. Can you remember how it surfaced? A: We wish we could. It was such an organic process. We were in musical theatre in high school and have always had a love of it. And both of us being writers, we’d always talked about one day wanting to write a musical. I also have a deep love of history and love things with historical characters in them.
Once we landed on the notion of treating Shakespeare as a rock star, the contemporary thing started to make more sense. Q: Having achieved the level of success that you have as a musician, did you ever worry about jumping headlong into this new world and taking this risk? A: Oh yeah. Worried about it all the time. It’s one thing to write songs, and after you’ve been doing it for a while, I know how to write a song, so you bring those skills into that new world. But there are so many different layers, so many different elements in writing songs for musicals. Some of it you understand going in, and some of it you have no idea how complicated or how different it is. There was a learning curve. It took us four and a half years from the time we started writing this musical until it opened on Broadway. I think we all felt we went to musical theatre college after those four years.
Q: Was it fun to write music in the Queen style for Shakespeare? A: Yeah. Once we landed on the notion of treating Shakespeare as a rock star, the contemporary thing started making more sense. There was always the desire to have an excuse to bring that stuff into it. We had songs like “A Musical” and “Bottom’s Gonna Be on Top” that are more musical theatre-type songs. But then we could do songs like “Hard To Be the Bard” or “Will Power” that have influences from Queen to the Beatles. And have both styles be able to live in the same musical. It was fun to use Shakespeare as the excuse for doing that. Q: How did you choose the musical theatre moments that you wanted to quote in song? A: We were conscious of not wanting to be so inside that you could only get it if you had seen the most obscure musicals. We really went broad, purposely. Not only with the musicals that inspired us but also musicals people would know even if they hadn’t seen them. So you reference The Sound of Music, Music Man, or Oklahoma!, shows a lot of people would know because they’ve seen the movie. The same with the Shakespeare stuff. Everybody knows some Shakespeare lines. There are a lot of what we refer to as his hits, lines that everybody is going to know.

SHAKESPEARE HIS WIFE & THE DOG written by directed by
Philip Whitchurch Julia St. John
JAN 18-28, 2018 April 1616—Shakespeare has returned to Stratford a rich and famous man, but all’s not well. Why is he so unhappy? Why can’t he sleep? Why is his wife furious with him? Who is Will waiting for and why can’t Anne find the dog? A sleepless night in Stratford. The secrets, lies, resentments and passions of a marriage laid bare. The one hour traffic of our play. Theatre at The Broad Stage made possible in part by generous gifts from Laurie & Bill Benenson and Susan Stockel.
