Dear Audience Member, This summer, the Ahmanson features shows heading to and from Broadway, and creative teams with a rich Center Theatre Group history. Few recent Broadway plays have been as lauded as The Humans was in 2016, when it swept the Tony Awards® and earned “Best Play of the Year” nods from just about every major newspaper and magazine that covers theatre. We’re very happy to have Tony winners Reed Birney (Best Featured Actor) and Jayne Houdyshell (Best Featured Actress) join us at the Ahmanson alongside many fellow Broadway cast members and the entire creative team from the Broadway production. Among them are Tony-winning director Joe Mantello (who most recently directed An Act of God at the Ahmanson and also appeared onstage in Angels of America at the Taper) and Tony-winning scenic designer David Zinn (who most recently did the scenic design for Soft Power as well as scenic and costume design for Amélie and Fun Home). Ain’t Too Proud—The Life and Times of the Temptations has everything you could ask for in a new musical: a great playwright (Dominique Morisseau), an iconic catalogue of music, and two of the theatre industry’s leading creatives (Des McAnuff and Sergio Trujillo). Dominique Morisseau is a playwright on the rise and a member of our Los Angeles Writers’ Workshop community, one of our artistic development programs that supports local artists. And Des McAnuff and Sergio Trujillo are Broadway all-stars whose work was most recently here at the Ahmanson with last year’s Jersey Boys. Your patronage and support is what brings talent like this to Los Angeles year after year. Thank you for being a part of the 50TH Season at the Ahmanson. Sincerely,

Michael Ritchie

“City National helps keep my financial life in tune.” So much of my life is always shifting; a different city, a different piece of music, a different ensemble. I need people who I can count on to help keep my financial life on course so I can focus on creating and sharing the “adventures” of classical music. City National shares my passion and is instrumental in helping me bring classical music to audiences all over the world. They enjoy being a part of what I do and love. That is the essence of a successful relationship.

CONGRATULATIONS, STUDENT AMBASSADORS!

Sherwood Alumni Mixer Some of L.A.’s most innovative and adventurous theatre creators—past recipients of Center Theatre Group’s Richard E. Sherwood Award for emerging artists—gathered with staff on May 4, 2018 for drinks and conversation. And they had a lot to discuss, since they’re busy working both at Center Theatre Group and around town.

The Center Theatre Group Student Ambassador Program Reflection and Reception on May 12, 2018 celebrated the accomplishments of the 14 high school students who completed our arts leadership program this school year. Our Arts Advocacy: Making an Impact and Marketing & Social Media: Peer Engagement teams shared out their projects—programming and marketing a Youth Summit around Soft Power—as well as how they’ve learned and grown as leaders.

L.A. PLAYWRIGHTS GET BLUE RIBBON CERTIFIED

Playwrights Eliza Clark, Janine Nabers, and Qui Nguyen discussed their careers and the role Center Theatre Group’s L.A. Writers’ Workshop has played in their work. The Writers’ Workshop provides artists with a year-long residency to develop a new play while also fostering a larger community of writers working in Southern California. All three began their playwriting careers in New York, struggling to make it as professional artists. “I thought I was just going to fail,” joked Nguyen, who ended up creating his own theatre company, Vampire Cowboys. “I just made this assumption that—because of the things I was interested in— no one would ever produce it, so I just had to produce it myself.” Television writing brought the playwrights to Los Angeles, lured by the promise of a steady gig. But their hearts are still in the theatre. “Playwriting feels like an art—even though it is also my job,” Clark said, “but I can’t force it the way that I sort of can force it when I’m writing television.” Turning to the subject of professional support for their work, all three panelists reveled in their experiences in Center Theatre Group’s L.A. Writers’ Workshop. Nguyen highlighted the value of the tightknit community that develops there. “I can sit by

myself in a room and write a play, but that doesn’t necessarily motivate me to write a play,” he said. “As soon as I go into a room [of playwrights]… I immediately know that kinship.” The piece Clark began at the Writers’ Workshop, Quack, will make its World premiere at the Kirk Douglas Theatre October 21 – November 18, 2018. This, for Ritchie, is the ultimate goal of supporting playwrights. “A lot of playwrights get commissioned and developed and sometimes that first reading is considered the victory lap,” he said. “And I’d like to think that we really pursue a production. Ultimately it is getting that play on the stage that matters.” Perhaps this is in part a reflection of the current state of commercial theatre, which the playwrights all find frustrating. Nabers argued that the rise of film and television shifted the focus of many talented artists. The great playwrights of the 20TH century “were writing plays because they had to survive,” said Nabers. “Now it seems as though a lot of people are writing plays for other reasons, or because they’re distracted.” Nguyen pointed to “the lack of risk-taking” that prevails today. “Once upon a time, the play was just good,” and that was enough to make it to Broadway, he said. “Now it’s like, ‘Oh they’re never going to come in from Connecticut to go see this unless it’s something that they already know.’” Lucky for Los Angeles, and thanks in part to the long-time support of patrons like The Blue Ribbon, we’re not purely at Broadway’s mercy, and artists like Clark, Nabers, and Nguyen have a space at Center Theatre Group to advance their craft. Read more and listen to a podcast of the full conversation at CTGLA.org/Blog.

Theatre thrives on patronage; not just from audiences, but from donors and institutions who have a stake in keeping the stage lights on. In the spirit of artistic philanthropy, The Blue Ribbon— The Music Center’s premier women’s support organization—celebrated 50 years of giving by hosting a series of events spotlighting the resident companies. Center Theatre Group’s “The Art of the Playwright,” a panel moderated by Artistic Director Michael Ritchie, took place at the Annenberg Space for Photography on May 1, 2018.

GERARDO NAVARRO TAKES FIRST at the National August Wilson Monologue Competition

May 5–7, 2018 was a long weekend of firsts for high school student Gerardo Navarro. His first visit to New York City (made possible by his first plane ride). His first Broadway show, Once on This Island (which he had performed in at school). His first time performing on Broadway, at the August Wilson Theatre. And, by the end of his trip, he had become the first student from Center Theatre Group and Los Angeles to place first at the National August Wilson Monologue Competition.

“To be involved in such a beautiful and loving ensemble, there was no competition. I believe we all brought it that night and told our stories— and that’s the true gift.”

The August Wilson Monologue Competition is presented by the Center Theatre Group Affiliates and Wells Fargo, and also receives generous support from the Dwight Stuart Youth Fund, the Rosenthal Family Foundation, Hearst Foundations, Hope Landis Warner, and the Joseph Drown Foundation.

Navarro made it to New York City after performing in two rounds of auditions at Center Theatre Group in November and December, as well as the Los Angeles Regional Finals at the Mark Taper Forum in March. In New York, he delivered his monologue alongside students from 12 cities around the country to advance from a semifinal round to the National Finals. But, reflecting afterward, he barely dwelled on his first-place finish. “August Wilson is one of the greatest American playwrights and to be chosen to perform his work on that stage was a huge honor,” said Navarro. “To be involved in such a beautiful and loving ensemble, there was no competition. I believe we all brought it that night and told our stories—and that’s the true gift.” Navarro, a rising senior at Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts in Downtown L.A., chose and delivered a monologue from King Hedley II, the 1980s work in Wilson’s American Century Cycle of 10 plays that chronicle each decade of 20TH-century African-American life. Navarro’s monologue tells the story of how the title character ended up in prison. “The subject of race and injustice is so important and relevant that this play was and continues to be a story that needs to be heard,” said Navarro. “King Hedley II was a man who had experienced injustice all of his life, but no matter how loud and strong his voice was, he was never heard.” Navarro has been on a journey to develop his own voice as an actor since he enrolled in 24TH STreet Theatre’s after-school program in first grade. “I discovered how deep a passion I had for theatre and since then, I’ve known that theatre is what I wanted to do,” said Navarro. Today, he mentors younger students at 24TH STreet’s summer program. He plans to continue to pursue drama after graduation next year. “All that I have learned in the August Wilson Monologue Competition training process will stick with me as I continue working on my craft. The techniques and feedback I’ve received throughout this program have made me not only a better performer but a better person,” he said. “I learned to bring my full self into everything I do, as well as to be confident with what I have to bring to the table.” Learn more at CTGLA.org/AugustWilson.

DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM SPARKS ARTS INITIATIVES IN FIVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

Think back to your childhood. Do you remember singing along to “The Bare Necessities” from The Jungle Book? Did you ever pretend to soar across the night sky on Aladdin’s magic carpet? Or bounce around your bedroom like Tigger in Winnie the Pooh? For decades, Disney stories and music have touched young people’s imaginations, and they continue to inspire kids to dream big. Disney Musicals in Schools does the same for students and educators, as well as the schools it helps to create sustainable musical theatre programs. Since launching in New York City in 2009, Disney Musicals in Schools has impacted over 175 schools and tens of thousands of students across the country. This year, Center Theatre Group partnered with Disney to bring the program to Los Angeles for the first time. Five schools— Harrison Elementary, Hope Street Elementary, Humphreys Avenue Elementary, La Ballona Elementary, and Ritter Elementary—participated

in a 17-week musical theatre residency that began in January 2018. Each school received performance rights to the Disney KIDS musical of their choosing, educational support materials, and weekly visits from Center Theatre Group teaching artists to help them produce, direct, and choreograph their first Disney musical. Yet that is just the beginning. “Each school selected demonstrated not only a strong commitment to their students but also to creating and sustaining a musical theatre program in their school for years to come,” said Center Theatre Group Director of Education and Engagement Tyrone Davis. “The program is about building educators’ capacity, which aligns with our commitment to support educators as art leaders in their own communities.” Educators at all five schools agreed that the program began changing their teaching practices and the school culture immediately, with effects that reverberated far beyond the dedicated theatre sessions. “I USE THEATRE ARTS EVEN WHEN I’M TEACHING MY READING AND WRITING LESSONS,” said Hope Street Elementary third grade teacher Claudia Alther. “I HAVE STUDENTS TELL STORIES OR ACT OUT [THEIR LESSONS]—AND THAT HAS STRENGTHENED THEIR READING AND WRITING SKILLS.” At Harrison Elementary, pre-K teacher Estephanie Aispuro found that staging The Lion King was a way to play on students’ strengths. “Many students at our school have this energy and personality that usually doesn’t shine through math or reading or science,” she said. “The arts bring that out of them, so it brings me great pleasure to have children from all different academic areas in our production.” At La Ballona Elementary, students have taken pride in “learning, practicing, and working together” to produce their version of The Lion King, said second

grade teacher Brittney Welch. As the stage manager of the production, Welch witnessed students interact and support each other across different classrooms and grade levels. “NO MATTER WHAT CLASS THEY’RE IN, THEY’RE ALL ONSTAGE TOGETHER,” she said. Administrators are looking forward to using lessons learned over the past year to grow future arts programming and tailor it to the needs of their students. “Having this opportunity has opened the door for us to look at the national arts standards—to see what they are and how they can help our students academically,” said Assistant Principal Angela Cash of Ritter Elementary, where students performed The Aristocats. “WE’RE MAKING SURE THAT WE’RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR OUR CHILDREN.” Humphreys Avenue dance teacher Gaby Mendoza added that the program opens opportunities for students beyond their

production of The Jungle Book. “We’re starting to plant our seeds here,” she said, “and by planting these seeds, we’re also letting parents know that there are career opportunities for students both onstage and offstage in the future.” In the meantime, friends and family got a chance to see the scope of the program and honor what their young people had accomplished at the Ahmanson Theatre on May 21, when everyone came together at a Student Share Celebration featuring one number performed by each school. The event celebrated not only the hard work put into creating and performing Disney productions but also the sense of community that will continue even after the curtain closes. As Hope Street Elementary fourth grader Ariana Valdez said about performing in The Jungle Book, “What I would remember the most about this experience is being with all my friends and being able to have fun with Disney.”
