Dear Audience Member, Welcome to Center Theatre Group! And thanks for showing up. As artists, we rely on you—our audience—to make the show happen. So please laugh when you feel like laughing, gasp when you feel like gasping, and clap when you feel like clapping. I have a feeling you’re going to find it impossible not to react to the three powerful shows onstage this month, from three powerful playwrights—all remarkable women of color, whose works are appearing simultaneously at the Ahmanson, Taper, and Douglas. This is a notable first for Center Theatre Group and something we are very proud of as we kick off our 52ND Season in Los Angeles. Ain’t Too Proud—The Life and Times of the Temptations provides everything you could ask for in a new musical: a great playwright (Dominique Morisseau), an iconic catalogue of music, and two of our leading creative minds (director Des McAnuff and choreographer Sergio Trujillo). We are extremely pleased to have L.A. Writers’ Workshop community member Dominique Morisseau making her Center Theatre Group debut on our biggest stage. Our Taper 2018/19 Season opens with Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat, one of the more significant plays of recent years. Lynn has won practically every honor and award in contemporary playwriting and is currently developing a new work which was co-commissioned by Center Theatre Group and Second Stage in New York. Critics and audiences in New York loved Jocelyn Bioh’s School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play, and I think everyone at the Douglas will feel exactly the same way about this biting, brilliant comedy from an exciting new voice in American theatre. We’ve been fans of Jocelyn’s for some time, having workshopped a different piece of hers recently— so we’re very pleased to be introducing her to our audiences now. AROUND CENTER THEATRE GROUP EDUCATORS GET IMMERSED IN THE 18/19 AHMANSON SEASON Center Theatre Group’s halls were filled with the songs of Dear Evan Hansen and Come From Away over four days in June as Los Angeles educators and Center Theatre Group Teaching Artists came together for an interactive exploration of the art form of musical theatre. Participants learned choreography and music from the shows as educators and artists—and return to school in the fall with lessons and activities for their classrooms along with the ongoing support and collaboration of a community of colleagues. Special guests included 2018 Sherwood Award Winner Hana Kim with a tutorial on how to incorporate projection in the classroom and a video conference with Come From Away director Christopher Ashley to discuss the origins and development of the show.

Meet our Students in St. Louis A group of intrepid student delegates—recent alumni of Center Theatre Group teen programs—traveled to Missouri to participate in the 2018 Theatre Communications Group National Conference June 14–16, 2018. LOS ANGELES HAS MORE THEATRE COMPANIES PER CAPITA THAN ANY CITY, AND IS A PLACE WRITERS FLOCK TO LOOKING FOR OPPORTUNITIES ACROSS EVERY FORM OF MEDIA. But it can still be hard for playwrights to find one another and find support for their theatrical endeavors. This is why, since 2005, Center Theatre Group’s L.A. Writers’ Workshop has worked to foster and promote a robust playwriting community in a city full of television writers’ rooms. Each year, seven playwrights—many of whom spend their days writing for the screen—are invited to research and develop new work with their peers and with feedback and support from Center Theatre Group staff. While creating new work has always been a driving force at Center Theatre Group, the world of L.A. theatre is ever-evolving. In exploring our own role in the ecosystem and how we can best support local playwrights, this year Center Theatre Group produced the first ever L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival: New Plays Forged in L.A., with the support of the Time Warner Foundation.

The Festival featured readings of three new plays from L.A. playwrights—all past participants in the L.A. Writers’ Workshop— onstage at the Kirk Douglas Theatre on June 23, 2018. They were chosen from over 30 submissions from the Writers’ Workshop community. Each play received dramaturgical support, rehearsal space, a cast of actors, and a director. First on the docket was A Kind of Weather by Sylvan Oswald (2015/2016 L.A. Writers’ Workshop member). The play—dubbed an “obsessive-compulsive time-jumping tragi-comedy”—follows the story of an unexpected pseudo-family reunion between an estranged father and son. Next came New Life by Dan O’Brien (2010/2011 L.A. Writers’ Workshop member), following the story of a war reporter and an ailing playwright, and representing the third in a trilogy of memoir-for-the-stage works by O’Brien. The final piece, How to Raise a Freeman by Zakiyyah Alexander (2012/2013 L.A. Writers’ Workshop member), is the story of a middle-class American family struggling with the realities of institutional and racial violence. Center Theatre Group Artistic Program Development Manager Patricia Garza explained that the goal was to spotlight the huge talent emerging from the Writers’ Workshop to the local community here in Los Angeles—including local theatre artistic directors and literary professionals—which meant selecting “a group that really represented the diversity and excellence here.”

The Festival ended with an evening reception, where audience members, artists—including many Writers’ Workshop community members whose works were not staged—and staff members mingled and enjoyed cocktails. The opportunity to be a part of the artistic development process was an exciting occasion for many, as was the chance to come together as a group of professionals and patrons who are deeply invested in the creation of new work in Los Angeles. “NOT JUST YOUR IMAGINATION: “It’s amazing how much play you can get out of a reading, how much of the play is there, how much you can envision,” said Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director Neel Keller, who also directed one of the readings. Keller noted that for playwrights, as well as for audiences, readings provide a chance to see work through an exploratory lens. “Readings can seem much more —San Francisco Chronicle alive than a full play,” Keller said. “Actors are still very actively discovering things; they’re making it up and discovering it as you watch them.”

CRAFT, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY in Boyle Heights

On a Saturday morning in June, a multigenerational group of friends and family gathered around sewing machines and bolts of colorful fabrics at Center Theatre Group’s The Shop. At one table stood a mother and daughter helping each other lay out fabrics to cut. Two sisters mingled around the room, translating English to Spanish and vice versa. The Shop serves as the Boyle Heights headquarters of our costume and props departments and also as a hub for community programming. Since 2013, we’ve held free workshops and events— from backyard barbeques to puppet-making classes—for the local community. In June 2018, we invited community members who have become regulars at our Shop events to participate in a special four-part series focused solely on fundamental sewing skills and techniques. The workshops involved the same group of seven participants throughout the month and was taught in both English and Spanish. During the introductory session in the series, Center Theatre Group staff demonstrated to community members how to properly and safely cut fabrics from patterns and operate industrial sewing machines. Participants then practiced on the machines by working on decorative pillows. From there, participants crafted bib aprons with border finishes, tote bags, and finally, quilted table runners. “WE WANTED TO PROVIDE COMMUNITY MEMBERS WITH A BUILDABLE SKILL THAT THEY COULD CONTINUE TO REFINE THROUGH MULTIPLE DIFFERENT PROJECTS,” said Center Theatre Group Costume Shop Manager Brent M. Bruin, who helped design and teach the series. “My hope is that they come out of this experience with the confidence to sit down on a sewing machine and do this at home.”

Boyle Heights resident and artist Dula Camargo has been attending workshops at The Shop since the program’s inception and was especially excited to challenge her sewing skills. Camargo found all the projects in the series enjoyable to work on but considered the tote bag the most rewarding because it taught her how costumes and props in theatre are reinforced for durability onstage. “I think we appreciate things more when we make them by hand,” she said. Another frequent workshop participant, Margarita Martinez, had spent some time sewing when she was younger and relished the opportunity to improve her skills as an adult. Martinez plans to take all that she has learned back home with her and craft projects for her loved ones. “My son already gave me his order for burlap bags to make,” she joked. “I want to keep learning and practicing.” Those who had more advanced sewing experience served as teaching assistants. Yannel Capilla—a former fashion student— guided her younger sister through the projects and learned a thing or two about the art of teaching. “I realized that when I’m helping someone else in sewing, I always have to be prepared” for questions and clarifications, Capilla said. “It’s exciting to be able to pass down all that I know about fashion to others.” Like the Capillas, whose parents also participated in the workshop, most of the community members were families—all eager to share a few Saturday mornings together collaborating on a common interest. As the sewing series came to an end, the group left with their custom-made creations as well as a richer understanding of their abilities as artists, educators, and creators. “This is theatre for your everyday life,” said Community Liaison Estela Garcia, who helped with Spanish translations with her sister Adela. “Through these workshops, we’re bridging the Boyle Heights community with theatre and also with Center Theatre Group. BRINGING SOMETHING NEW TO THE TEMPTATIONS AN INTERVIEW WITH PLAYWRIGHT AND DETROIT NATIVE DOMINIQUE MORISSEAU

“The story of these young African American men navigating their identities, their music, and their role as artists at a time when the nation was in great civic and social unrest—I just think that speaks for now,” said Dominique Morisseau. Morisseau—the acclaimed, award-winning playwright best known for her three-play cycle The Detroit Project and hot off a stint writing for the Showtime series Shameless—was explaining how she approached the writing of the book for Ain’t Too Proud—The Life and Times of The Temptations, onstage at the Ahmanson Theatre Aug 21 – Sep 30, 2018. As a Detroit native growing up in the long shadow of the Baby Boomers, her parents’ generation, exposure to The Temptations was inevitable and inescapable. “There’s not a Detroiter of my generation that did not grow up in some capacity on Motown,” said Morisseau. “Being able to tell this story from a generation removed allows me to see it from my parents’ lens, the Generation X lens, and through the Millennial lens. I feel like I’m merging those three generational points of view into the story.” “Because I didn’t live through it the first time, I get to have a wide view of it,” she added of the history the show encompasses. “Looking back on it I get to see it in a different way. That makes the music mean 20 more things than even the people that lived through it probably even imagined.” Societal sea changes also lent fresh contexts to the deceptively multi-leveled music. “These lyrics that are love lyrics really sound like they’re talking about more than a traditional relationship between men and women,” she said. “It sounds like this could be a relationship between anyone: a man and a man, a woman and a woman, this could be a

relationship between men and their nation. And I just started operating on all these levels, and that’s how the songs revealed themselves to us, as opposed to anything we did brilliantly. The music itself just moves through time brilliantly on its own.” The creative team’s instincts about the music received some particularly trenchant validation during its recent Kennedy Center run, she revealed. “Representative John Lewis came to our show a couple of nights ago,” she recalled. “And this is John Lewis who did the Freedom Rides and the civil rights movement, and started the March on Washington with Dr. King.” During a meet-and-greet after the show, Lewis shared a key bit of insight about just how deeply the music mattered to the movement. “He said, ‘If not for the music, the civil rights movement would have been a bird with no wings.’ And I just thought, ‘God—you can’t write that better.’ It was one of the most profound things anyone’s ever said to us about the show.” But the full effect isn’t only a lesson in the historical significance of pop songs, particularly when so many of the messages in the music also ring true in today’s increasingly divisive and racially charged cultural and political climate. “You know The Temptations’ music, but you’re getting a different delivery of it with this show,” she said. “I’m very excited about how we use the element of theatre to really deepen and transcend the meanings in some of the songs. We’re finding new meaning in their music that I think speaks to a very contemporary context.”

STEPHEN D. ROUNTREE (Managing Director) joined Center Theatre Group in 2014 as Managing Director. He was previously the President and CEO of The Music Center (2002–2014) and concurrently the CEO of the Los Angeles Opera (2008–2012). He served the J. Paul Getty Trust for 22 years, starting in 1980 as Deputy Director of the Getty Museum, then Director of the Getty Center Building Program, and in 1998, the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Getty Trust. He currently serves as a trustee of Occidental College, The Ahmanson Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and Polytechnic School. DOUGLAS C. BAKER (Producing Director) is now in his 29TH season at Center Theatre Group. He is an active member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network, and is a proud member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. In May 2013, Doug received the Broadway League’s prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Presenter Management Award. KELLEY KIRKPATRICK (Associate Artistic Director). Since arriving at Center Theatre Group in 2005, Kelley has produced over 60 productions at the Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, and Kirk Douglas Theatre, many of which have gone on to future lives on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and beyond. NAUSICA STERGIOU (General Manager, Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre) has worked professionally supporting artists in theatres of all shapes, sizes, and locales including many seasons at Center Theatre Group as General Manager and, previously, as Audience Development Director. She oversees mainstage productions at the Taper and Douglas, as well as new play commissions and developmental productions through Center Theatre Group’s New Play Development. Nausica has taught at USC’s School of Dramatic Arts, and advises and works with local nonprofits including Hollywood Orchard.

GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre— including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts, and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989, Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.
