When his son gets a school assignment on heroes, John Leguizamo seizes the chance to teach him all about the great figures of the Latino world. But once he sets out on his irreverent crash course across three continents and 3,000 years of history— from conquistadores to cumbia, Montezuma to Pitbull, and taking on the characters in all of it—he uncovers provocative truths that shock even him. A sold-out run on Broadway. Record-breaking engagements at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and The Public Theater. Endless critical and audience acclaim direct from Studio 54. Chalk it all up to the mad genius of Tony and Emmy Award® winner John Leguizamo, standing at the head of the class in his uproarious one-man play, Latin History for Morons.

(He was also really funny in that one season of Orange Is the New Black. And in Billions. And Broad City.) Now he’s at the Ahmanson telling a new story in a new way with the same heart and humor we’ve come to expect. Lin-Manuel Miranda called The New One “as perfect a night as you’re gonna get.” Do not miss The New One. Some people say it’s his best one. (It was John Mulaney. Also Vogue.)

MATTHEW BOURNE’S SWAN LAKE DIRECTED & CHOREOGRAPHED BY
Matthew Bourne
AHMANSON THEATRE DTLA
In 1997 Matthew Bourne made his US debut at the Ahmanson Theatre with Swan Lake where it was an instant hit before becoming the longest running ballet on Broadway. Now Bourne and his award-winning designers Lez Brotherston (set & costumes) and Paule Constable (lighting) return with an exciting reimagining of the classic New Adventures production. Thrilling, audacious, witty, and emotive, this Swan Lake is perhaps still best known for replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered conventions, turned tradition upside down, and took the dance world by storm. Collecting over 30 international accolades including an Olivier Award in the UK and three Tonys on Broadway, Matthew Bourne’s powerful interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is a passionate and contemporary Swan Lake for our times.

Lorne Campbell
Set in the shipbuilding community in Tyne and Wear, UK, The Last Ship tells the story of a young man who returns home after 17 years at sea. The tensions between past and future flare in both his family and his town. He finds that the local shipyard, around which the community has always revolved, is closing and no one knows what will come next, only that a half-built ship towers over the terraces of working-class homes. With the engine fired and pistons in motion, picket lines are drawn as the foreman and his wife fight to hold their community together in the face of the gathering storm.

Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world, is ready to risk it all for love. Guided by the mighty island gods, Ti Moune sets out on a remarkable journey to reunite with the man who has captured her heart. The groundbreaking vision of two-time Tony Award-nominated director Michael Arden (Spring Awakening revival) and acclaimed choreographer Camille A. Brown (NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live) conjures up “a place where magic is possible and beauty is apparent for all to see!” (The Huffington Post). With a score that bursts with life from Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, the Tony Award-winning songwriters of Anastasia and Ragtime, Once on This Island is a timeless testament to theatre’s unlimited possibilities.

They knew they would make history, but not what history would make of them. Fed up with living under the tyranny of British rule, John Adams attempts to persuade his fellow members of the Continental Congress to vote in favor of American Independence and sign the Declaration. But how much is he willing to compromise in the pursuit of freedom? And to whom does that freedom belong? Direct from the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University, visionary director Diane Paulus reexamines a pivotal moment in American history in a reimagining of the Tony Award®-winning musical 1776 prior to its Broadway engagement at Roundabout Theatre Company.

If the audience laughs it was a comedy. If the audience nods with new understanding it was a drama. If the audience both laughs and nods but can’t say why it’s funny or what they’ve understood, it might be A Play Is a Poem, the new collection of one-acts by celebrated playwright and filmmaker Ethan Coen. The hillbilly hollows of Appalachia, the executive suites of Hollywood, a New York tenement apartment, a magnolia-scented gazebo in Natchez, Mississippi—each holds a different story. Together they make for an eccentric look at life across America as only Ethan Coen (or perhaps Sam Shepard or Mark Twain) could deliver.

2017 TONY AWARD ® WINNER BEST REVIVAL OF A PLAY In 2017, Jitney became the final play in two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s masterful The American Century Cycle to be seen on Broadway. Set in the early 1970s, this richly textured piece follows a group of men trying to eke out a living by driving unlicensed cabs, or jitneys. When the city of Pittsburgh threatens to board up the business and the boss’ son returns from prison, tempers flare, potent secrets are revealed, and the fragile threads binding these people together may come undone at last. Directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson (Lackawanna Blues), one of Wilson’s finest interpreters, this acclaimed production of Jitney received six Tony nominations, winning Best Revival of a Play, and winning the 2017 Drama League, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Revival of a Play.

This boundary-breaking play breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of American women. Fifteen-year-old Heidi Schreck earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. Now, the Obie Award winner recalls her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women in her own family and the founding document that dictated their rights and citizenship. This hilarious, hopeful, and “achingly human” (Exeunt Magazine) exploration is directed by Obie Award winner Oliver Butler.

Sakina’s Restaurant is written and performed by Mandvi, who brings his acclaimed performance back to the stage 20 years after its Obie Award-winning debut. Entertaining and intimate, this story of what it means to be an American was written long before immigration became an intensely polarizing issue.
