FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

WELCOME TO CENTER THEATRE GROUP At Center Theatre Group, we believe theatre is a cultural force with the power to thrill, inspire, change—and perhaps most importantly, unite. Since you’re here in the audience, I know you believe in theatre, too. Please consider making a donation in support of whatever inspires you—artists, audiences, community— to help ensure that live theatre continues to have a leading presence in Los Angeles. Learn more at CTGLA.org/WeThePeople. As a nonprofit, we rely on supporters like you to help create not only the art you see onstage—but also works that are still in development by world-class artists in Los Angeles and around the country. From our L.A. Writers’ Workshop, a community that supports local playwrights, to our ongoing commissions, which give artists financial, artistic, and technical backing to create new works, our relationships with artists form the core of our work. We are proudly here to serve the greatest possible group of artists, audiences, and community that make up our city—challenging them to create, think about, and ultimately be transformed by live theatre. And you can see that clearly in the two productions we have currently onstage. It is an honor to continue to give August Wilson’s work a stage and an artistic home in Los Angeles through both productions like Jitney and education programs like the August Wilson Monologue Competition and the August Wilson In-School Residency. It’s a privilege to have Ruben Santiago-Hudson return to the Taper to direct a truly great cast of actors. In 1997, Sir Matthew Bourne made his US debut with his Swan Lake at the Ahmanson. An instant hit, Swan Lake went on to become the longest running ballet on Broadway, making Matthew one of the best-known talents in dance and theatre in the world. Over the past two decades, Center Theatre Group has become his home away from home, and we are so glad to welcome him back with this new reimagining of a classic production. Sincerely,

Michael Ritchie

FOUR OF THE BUZZIEST SHOWS IN NEW YORK CITY THIS SEASON ARE TRANSFERRING THERE FROM CENTER THEATRE GROUP—an exciting moment for Los Angeles theatre that showcases the promise and excitement around one of our tent pole strategies for the creation and support of new work. Center Theatre Group has co-commissioned new plays for many years with top theatres from around the country and the world. In 2017, we formalized the process thanks to the Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative, a $1 million grant to commission at least two shows annually with four different theatres.

“Partnerships are a central part of our strategic investments and support of new work,” said Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. “Co-commissions offer artists more support—both financial and creative—and ensure that a work will have a second production and a continued life after the World premiere. What we’re seeing, too, is that a co-commission or early co-production can have a domino effect and bring new work to still more theatres and bigger audiences.” This fall, Center Theatre Group is co-presenting the Steppenwolf Theatre production of Tracy Letts’ Linda Vista, an audience Continues on page 12

Diverse Stories and Remarkable Talents

MEET THE PLAYWRIGHTS OF OUR 2019/2020 FOR ANY PLAYWRIGHT, the opportunity to create and converse in a collaborative setting is a golden one. Especially unique is an environment as immersive and supportive as the L.A. Writers’ Workshop, now beginning its 14 year at Center Theatre Group.

LA Writers Workshop #1 TH

The seven local playwrights who will be writing new works with our support during the 2019/2020 Season are Adelina Anthony, Ngozi Anyanwu, Jonathan Caren, Dionna Michelle Daniel, Boo Killebrew, Kenneth Lin, and Kemp Powers—and together they offer a diverse medley of both talents and perspectives. Indeed, almost all of this year’s artists also work in Hollywood—writing (Lin, for example, has written on Star Trek: Discovery, House of Cards, and Sweetbitter, while Caren wrote on Netflix’s Gypsy); acting (Anthony on Starz’s Vida, Anyanwu on HBO’s The Deuce); directing (Powers co-directed the 2020 Disney/Pixar feature Soul); and producing (Killebrew is executive producer on the upcoming AMC dramedy Aim High).

The L.A. Writers’ Workshop was founded to take advantage of exactly these kinds of talents. “Los Angeles has become a destination for writers in a way that New York was in the past. There are more fantastic playwrights living in L.A. than ever before,” said Associate Artistic Director/Literary Director Neel Keller. “We wanted the theatre’s new

play development efforts to provide a creative home for the growing number of local writers.”

That support comes from regular meetings of the playwrights—along with members of the company’s Artistic staff—to share, discuss, and improve their developing works in an encouraging space. “It can be a lonely occupation, so I think the impulse to band together in a community where you can share the thrills and burdens of writing a play is important,” Keller noted. The Workshop kicks off with conversations with experts in the subject matter of their plays. In the past, Center Theatre Group has invited everyone from a plastic surgeon and a theologian to a UFO researcher. At the end of the year, actors are brought in for readings that allow the playwrights to better envision how their works will appear onstage. Participants both past and present also have the opportunity to showcase their work in the annual L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival, which features public readings of selected new works by former Workshop participants. HOW DAEL ORLANDERSMITH SPEAKS TO PEOPLE and Why She’s Bringing Until the Flood Home to the Kirk Douglas Theatre

DAEL ORLANDERSMITH STARTS THE CONVERSATIONS her audiences

“Center Theatre Group has been so supportive. When we did Bones, other people wouldn’t touch it, and I will always be grateful to Michael Ritchie for that,” she said. Orlandersmith’s three previous plays at the Douglas include two World premieres. In 2010’s Bones she chronicled a difficult reunion among family members with a traumatic past, and in 2014’s Forever she told the story of her fraught relationship with her abusive mother. need. In her newest groundbreaking work, Until the Flood, that means thinking and talking about Ferguson, Missouri, where in 2014 a white police officer shot and killed an unarmed black teenager named Michael Brown. After successfully touring nationally and internationally, she’s bringing this solo show to the Kirk Douglas Theatre, which has in many ways become an artistic home away from home.

“The content is very difficult,” acknowledged Orlandersmith of Until the Flood. “The challenge every night is to tackle that stuff,” she added. “But I have to do that.” She portrays eight different composite characters whose stories are based on extensive interviews she conducted in Ferguson in 2015. They include Hassan, a black teenage “street kid,” Dougray, a racist landlord, and Connie, a white teacher who tries to empathize with both Brown and the officer who shot him.

“I do what I have to do as an actor. Sometimes when we see certain people, they remind us of an aspect of ourselves that we don’t like,” said Orlandersmith of portraying these characters. “I wonder, am I seeing something about myself I don’t like? And then I tackle it. It’s my responsibility to be a storyteller and to be an actor.” Until the Flood began during rehearsals for Forever, which was also directed by Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director/Literary Director Neel Keller. “The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis reached out to ask if Dael would create something that addressed what was happening in their city,” said Keller. “She asked me to collaborate with her on the new play. So, we have been working together on Until the Flood since the very beginning.” Keller and Orlandersmith first met in 1994, when he directed a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. “I love working with Dael. She always challenges me and, probably more importantly, always surprises me,” said Keller.

Orlandersmith, for her part, relies on Keller to help her take a step away from the material. “There’s certain things Neel has told me to do and suggested that I do that are now becoming clearer,” said Orlandersmith. “When you’re wearing both the actor and the writer hat, you need that second perspective.” Both Orlandersmith and Keller weren’t sure what audiences would make of Until the Flood at first— particularly because it was premiering just miles away from where the story is set, in St. Louis. “I wondered what would happen with that community, and they took to that piece, my God they were wonderful, they were so glad they were there,” said Orlandersmith. “I don’t speak

for people, I speak to people, and I made that very clear. I’m not a politician.”

Nine productions later—across America and in Galway, London, and Edinburgh, where Until the Flood won two of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s most prestigious awards— that still holds true. “It was very moving to see how strongly European audiences connected to this very American piece. Dael acknowledges the multiplicity of truth swirling around the events at the heart of the play. By allowing her composite characters to speak their often contradictory truths, she is able to capture something elemental about this very human, very complicated situation,” said Keller. Added Orlandersmith, “I hope that people are listening, and I hope it invokes a certain kind of thought and communication.”

“I HOPE THAT PEOPLE ARE LISTENING, AND I HOPE IT INVOKES A CERTAIN KIND OF THOUGHT AND COMMUNICATION.”

(L–R) Teaching Artists Matias Ponce, Mara Palma, Carissa Pinckney, and Ramy El-Etreby, Resident Teaching Artist Debra Piver, and Teaching Artist Peter Mendoza.

BRINGING THE CLASS TO THE STAGE, AND THE STAGE TO THE CLASS Center Theatre Group Relies on our Teaching Artists to Help Educate and Inspire the Next Generation AT CENTER THEATRE GROUP, WE BELIEVE IN THE VALUE OF BRIDGING WHAT STUDENTS LEARN IN THE CLASSROOM WITH WHAT THEATRE PROFESSIONALS DO EVERY DAY. Enter our Teaching Artists, creative professionals who integrate their art form, perspectives, and skills into our educational programming. These educators move seamlessly between the classroom and the Los Angeles stages—including ours. Bernard K. Addison, a veteran of our Education programs, appeared on our stages most recently in 2018’s Water by the Spoonful and 2017’s Citizen: An American Lyric; our 2017 Zoot Suit revival cast featured Teaching Artists Melinna Bobadilla and Rocío López. In addition, many of them are on the faculty at schools and institutions around the region. Our Teaching Artists—we work with 40 or more each season—are also playwrights, directors, choreographers, and designers. They all bring a wealth of hands-on experience and real-world philosophy that benefit students across many different programs we offer, including Student Matinees, Disney Musicals in Schools, and our August Wilson program. This year, two of the new Teaching Artists we welcomed to our Student Matinee faculty are familiar faces at Center Theatre Group. Actors Peter Mendoza and Matias Ponce were inspired to come on board after participating in the program during their own stints in leading roles on Center Theatre Group stages. Mendoza played the titular role in 2017’s Elliot, a Soldier’s Fugue at the Douglas and appeared in last year’s production of Sweat at the Taper, and Ponce played Henry Reyna in our acclaimed Zoot Suit revival.

“I was unprepared for how involved and engaged the students would be,” recalled Mendoza of the Elliot Student Matinee performances, which were followed by Q&As with the cast. “It was an amazing experience that I wanted to continue—interacting and getting students excited about great theatre.” Both Mendoza and Ponce began their Teaching Artist experience helping immerse high school students into the world of John Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons. Their work on the program includes team-building exercises with staff and fellow Teaching Artists, Educator Conferences with participating teachers, and in-school pre- and post-show visits. They know firsthand how valuable it is to provide opportunities to students to see and engage with live theatre, especially those who may never have considered getting involved in theatre, performance, or art as a whole.

Ponce described the Student Matinee Program as the perfect opportunity to “share my love for theatre and how it can revolutionize the minds of youth through freedom of expression and break the stereotypes our youth have been taught.” But perhaps the most important asset the Teaching Artists can bring to their efforts is their firsthand knowledge of the power of theatre to change lives for both the actors/creators and the audience. “Theatre is such a giving and inspiring art form that connects you to the world and your community,” explained Mendoza. “It gives you a voice and the ability to play. There is nothing that can compare to the connection between the audience and the characters/actors.”

These Education programs are supported in part by Deena and Edward Nahmias. 20 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

We’re proud to have this new Jitney, directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, join a list of productions of Wilson’s magisterial American Century Cycle that feature some of the most talented actors of our time, including Laurence Fishburne, Viola Davis, Phylicia Rashad, and of course Santiago-Hudson himself. Beginning with 1990’s The Piano Lesson, Center Theatre Group joined a network of regional theatres producing Wilson’s plays across the country. As Founding Artistic Director Gordon Davidson wrote in our program, “This ‘theatre network’ has afforded plays the opportunity of moving from one theatre to the next with a kind of continuity— one different from commercial touring—an opportunity which promotes the play’s ongoing development.”

Joe Turner’s Come and Gone

The dividends paid off immediately, as the Yale Repertory Theatre/ Center Theatre Group production of The Piano Lesson moved to Broadway, where it went on to win the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play and receive five Tony Award nominations. Similar arrangements followed for Two Trains Running, King Hedley II, Gem of the Ocean, and Radio Golf. ®

Center Theatre Group is also committed to bringing Wilson’s work to a new generation through our education programming, which includes the August Wilson Monologue Competition and the August Wilson In-School Residency. Both programs give students hands-on introductions to The American Century Cycle and an opportunity to connect Wilson’s stories to their own lives. This year, we’re also bringing approximately 1,500 students from across Southern California to Jitney through our Student Matinee Program. Continues on page 24

“The Workshop continues to evolve based on the ideas and suggestions of the writers who participated the year before,” said Keller. “Those writers give feedback on how we can better support the next group—it’s really led by the writers, what questions they have for us and what they’re interested in.” That extends to the lives of the plays themselves. “When a writer joins our group, it’s because we enjoy their work, and we think they can benefit from this kind of environment,” said Keller. “We encourage them to work

on whatever ideas are exciting them the most at this moment. We don’t necessarily know what they are writing about. We let their passions and interest lead the way.”

It’s too early to say what this year’s plays will be—more often than not, they morph and evolve over the course of the season—but we’re excited about the unique and necessary perspectives of this group, some of whom are already familiar to Los Angeles theatre audiences. Anyanwu’s Good Grief made its World premiere at the Douglas in 2016, while IAMA Theatre Company and the Latino Theater Company premiered Caren’s Canyon earlier this year. Kemp Powers’ One Night in Miami premiered at Rogue Machine Theatre in 2013 and went on to earn awards including the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Ted Schmitt Award for Outstanding World Premiere, four NAACP Theatre Awards, and two LA Weekly Theater Awards. As a group, the playwrights have been produced at prominent regional theatres around the country, including the Long Wharf, Vineyard, Atlantic, Roundabout, and The Public.

“Being a large theatre in L.A. gives us the opportunity and responsibility to open our doors and give writers a place to sharpen their playwriting,” said Keller. “It’s important for all of our spirits to have those playwrights here—in the midst of all of our activity. Their presence brings creative energy to our buildings and makes a clear statement that supporting the genesis of new, exploratory work is a central part of what Center Theatre Group is.” The L.A. Writers’ Workshop is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. 26 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE
