INTERNSHIP REPORT OF MSW STUDENTS AT AMRITA COMMUNITY HEALTH TRAINING CENTRE NJARACKAL, VYPIN , KOCHI. PERIOD OF TRAINING: 8th to 27th October 2018.

Number of Students undergone Internship: 30 (12 MSW 1st Semester and 18 MSW 3rd Semester) Report:

Introduction As a compulsory part of the MSW course curriculum, Students have to undergo periodic training in each semester based on the academic requirements of developing Social Work attitude, skill and knowledge in the various fields of application. Student trainees are assigned with 20 days of internship in a community medical setting functioning under " Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kochi. under the direct supervision of two faculty members and the professional social workers from the community health centre. The community medical setting namely Amrita Community Health training Centre(ACHTC), Njarackal , Vypin island ,Kochi, provides free medical services to people living in the Vyipin Island. The whole Pregame of internship was based on a well thought out programme schedule chalked out by a team of professionals from the CWEGE and AIMS.(Schedule attached). On the first day after the arrival at the CHC, Dr Chitra Tomy, Asst.Professor, Department of Community Medicine, AIMS and administrative medical officer of the CHC, Had given an orientation about the staffing pattern in the CHC. She also explained about the functioning and services of CHC.

PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES UNDRTAKEN DURING THEPERIOD OF INTERNSHIP. 1. CARE (Cancer Awareness and Rehabilitation fot Everyone) PROJECT : Mrs. Tinu K Narayanan, Social Worker, AIMS, explained about the CARE project which is a 10 years project being run on behalf of AIMS. The project aims at cancer screening, early diagnosis


and treatment. The goal of the project is to make Vypin block panchayat as a block with zero cancer occurrence. A CARE Camp is being regularly conducted in every tuesday and fridays with the participation of a large number of people. Women with an age of 35 to 60 and Men between 50 and 60 are allowed to register in the camp for cancer care services from the CHC. Approximately 50 to 60 people were attending the camp which is organised on basis of each ward in the area of Vypin block panchayat. Student trainees were actively participated in organising the camp on the specific day. They are assigned with different roles including registration, data collection and entry by using Enemuro app, assisting Blood sample collection, assisting scanning etc. Almost 4 CARE camps and more than 250 cases were attended during the period of internship.

2. CARE PROJECT DATA ENTRY Student trainees were provided with ‘’ tablets’’ for data entry which was collected through surveys conducted earlier from selected areas of the block panchayat. Enumero aap is used for comprehensive data entry by the students. Around 600 individual data were updated in the AAP by the direction of the concerned department of the CHC. This task was completed by allocating two to three hours of three days. This exercise has given immense experience for the student trainees in dealing with data entry of survey research.


3.Mega Medical Camp Student trainees were actively played a professional role in the multi-disciplinary team at a medical setting like mega medical camp which was organised by Kodungallur Taluk Cooperative agricultural development bank in collaboration with Rotary Club of Kochi and Amrita Super Speciality Hospital Kochi on 14th October2018. AIMS Medical camp Coordinator Mr. Jayan MD has provided coordination and direction for the trainees by allocating them in different specialities like general Medicine, Ophthalmology, Gynaecology , Dental, Telemedicine, Cardiology and paediatrics, to support the Medical professionals and the public. Around 5000 people have registered of the camp, of which 4500 have attended and received treatment . The one full day mega medical camp was concluded by 5.30 PM on the day. The students role were mainly assisting the respective medical practitioner by giving translation of communication between patients and doctor, Supporting patients in attending respective specialities, provide Psycho social care , telemedicine Blood glucose monitoring and follow up.


4.Research data Collection from flood affected areas: Three days are completely devoted to data collection for a research study at flood affected places in the Vypin islands. In the first day the trainees were divided into 10 groups of 3 each and they are allotted with different households for data collection at the area of ‘’ Ayyapally corporative residential association”- a residential colony. The trainees were able to collect data from 45 households. In the another day the same groups of students had visite ”Kuzhipally” of Vypin and collected data from about 35 households. The above two areas were moderately affected by flood so it is consciously selected, “Paravoor” as the area for another round of data collection where flood is seriously affected. The trainees have collected data form 90 Household in the third data collection day Overall nearly 180 respondents were interviewed by the trainees for data collection..

5.Orientation Visits to other agencies: • Amrita Urban Community Centre- Geriatric Club: Students along with the Faculty members qnd Mr, Manoj (Senior care taker)visited Amma Urban Health Centre,Kaloor, Kochi. On 11th October . .An efficiently functioning geriatric Club with active


participants of elders from the near by locality is a major highlight of the visit. During the visit, there were a few variety of classes was arranged. Another visit was conducted to the Snehatheeram Oldage home to understand the real life situations of elder people who are out of care and protection. The trainees conducted FGD, Group work and cultural activities in the oldage home Visits to ICDS- Anganvadies: The purpose of the visit was to understand the functioning of the ICDS scheme through the Anganvadies for children, adolescent girls and Lactating mothers. The trainees visited two anganvadies, of which one is functioning under private ownership. PHC visit: The student trainees have visited a Public Health Centre (PHC) at Elakunnapuzha to get an orientation on the structure and functioning of the lowest level of health care system in the state.

6. Interactive Classes: Number of interactive classes and sessions were organised for the trainees by Practitioners and experts from the respective areas. 7.Streetplay and Role plays: On the occasion of world mental health Day, the trainees staged a street play for making awareness among the public. The enacted the play before the people gathered in the Hospital and before the elderly in the oldage home during the visit. A modified version of the street play was also played before the School children in the public school. The theme of the play was mental health issues of different section of people and the role of social worker in improving positive mental health. Conclusion: The trainees have undergone a variety of activities as per the planned schedule during the period ofInternship. The have conducted Casework and Group work among different situations where they come across during the data collection and institutional visits.. For maintaining a good physical and mental health among the trainees, a regular routine of Yoga practice also carried out during period of Internsh.
