I VIRGIN PRUNES parlano di A new form of beauty, tra primitivismo, tribalità e ingenuita, show a cavallo tra musica e performing art. Suoni cupi, urla, voci ruvide o strazianti. SANDPAPER LULLABY”

The Virgin Prunes From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Virgin Prunes was an Irish gothic rock band. The band formed in 1977 and disbanded in 1986 after the departure of member Gavin Friday. The rest of the band continued on without him for a while as The Prunes, but they too ended activities by 1990. Career The band consisted of childhood friends of U2’s Bono. Lypton Village was a “youthful gang” created by Bono, Guggi (Derek Rowan) and Gavin Friday (Fionan Hanvey) in the early 70s, where every member got a new identity and where they could escape from dreary and predictable Dublin life and be anything they wanted to be. It was both lead singers Friday and Guggi who first gave a teenaged Paul Hewson his alter-ego and worldfamous moniker “Bono Vox of O’Connell Street,” later simply “Bono.” Known for its outrageous and controversial stage performances, led by the bands’ theatrical singer/songwriter Friday, they first began playing small shows in Dublin gaining them a cult audience and ridicule from the cultur-

ally conservative community. Friday and Guggi, along with third vocalist ‘DaveiD Busaras’ (David Scott Watson), guitarist Dik Evans (brother of U2’s The Edge), bassist Strongman (Trevor Rowan, brother of Guggi) and drummer Pod (Anthony Murphy), completed the original lineup. Pod left the group and was replaced by Haa-Lacka Binttii (aka Bintii, aka Princess Tinymeat, né Daniel Figgis). With Binttii now on drums, tape loops and keyboards, the band secured a deal with Rough Trade Records. They released their first single “Twenty Tens (I’ve Been Smoking All Night)”, through Rough Trade but on their own Baby Records label in late 1980. They released a second single “In The Greylight” in early 1981. Two other Binttii tracks were released during 1980 before conflicts with other members forced him out of the band. “Red Nettle’” was included on an NME compilation C81 and “Third Secret” was included on the Cherry Red compilation Perspectives And Distortion. Work had already started on the project “A New Form Of Beauty” while Bintti was with the band, but after he was replaced by Mary D’Nellon (Drums), some of his tracks were re-recorded and his name was not included in the credits. “A New Form of Beauty” was a project that originally contained four chapters and was released in various formats - 7” single, 10” single and 12”

single. There was also supposed to be a cassette but this fourth part was never officially released, although all four parts did appear on an Italian version of A New Form Of Beauty which was released as a double album. In November 1982, the Virgin Prunes release their debut album ...If I Die, I Die (produced by Colin Newman of Wire) and Heresie, a French boxset. Heresie was commissioned by Yann Farcy after seeing them perform at the Rex Club in Paris and was based on a loose examination of insanity. In 1984 both Guggi and Dik Evans, unhappy with the music business, left the band. This forced drummer Mary D’Nellon to take up the guitar and allowed Pod to return as the band’s drummer. The Virgin Prunes started to record the album Sons Find Devils, which has never been released. In 1985, confusingly enough, a retrospective video titled Sons Find Devils was released; this video had nothing to do with the unreleased album of the same name. During May 1985, Over the Rainbow, a compilation of rarities, was also released. In July 1986 the band, now a four-piece recording music written for ‘Sons Find Devils’, finally released a new album, The Moon Looked Down and Laughed. Also that year frontman Gavin Friday left the group. His departure was confirmed in the liner notes of the band’s 1987 live album The Hidden Lie which contained a short statement confirming the band’s break-up.

After disbanding as The Virgin Prunes, D’Nellon, Strongman and Busaras formed an offshoot group called The Prunes, which released three albums between 1988 and 1990 (Lite Fantastik, 1988; Nada, 1989; and Blossoms & Blood, 1990). Dik Evans played on The Prunes’ album Lite Fantastik and a seventeen year old, Justin Kavanagh (a.k.a. Valley Limberg) from the Dublin hardcore band Mutant Asylum (with his cousin Cormac Figgis a.k.a. The Master Switch, now with Paranoid Visions) took the helm as guitarist for “Blossoms & Blood”. In 1993, Justin Kavanagh went on to form Gormenghast with Padraig O’Toole of “The Gods”. Justin Kavanagh also formed Snifferdog with Gerard Griffin. The Band was Hotly tipped for the top by Hot Press Magazine and courted much record company interest But was plagued by line up problems, eventually fizzling out in 2007. Griffin is working on new material with The T.N.C.at the helm. Gormenghast reformed in late 2008 after 13 years and are currently working on a new album. Note: Guggi and Strongman’s youngest brother Peter Rowan (nicknamed ‘Radar’) was the little boy whose image has appeared on countless U2 albums and single sleeves over the years, most notably Boy, War and Best of 1980-1990. Peter is now an acclaimed professional photographer in Dublin, recently utilizing the new spelling ‘Rowen’ for his surname in order to avoid confusion with the American bluegrass musician Peter Rowan.

Binttii’s youngest brother Jonathan Figgis is the boy who appears on the cover of the second Virgin Prunes single ‘In The Greylight’. Jonathan now runs the award-winning film production company October Eleven Pictures with his other brother Jason Figgis In 1998, Cleopatra Records re-released the Sons Find Devils video, along with a soundtrack album on CD. This was the first commercially-available Virgin Prunes material to be released since 1993 and, for a few years, the only commercially available full-length Virgin Prunes album on compact disc (though studio recordings of the songs “Baby Turns Blue,” “Pagan Lovesong,” and “Caucasian Walk” had cropped up on CD compilations of various Goth and other dark/avant-garde post-punk bands). Gavin Friday has since had a reasonably successful solo career in both music and film. Guggi remains an influential artist in Dublin. Dave-id still records as a solo artist in Ireland. After 20 years of selfimposed seclusion from the rock world, Dik Evans recently gave an overview of his and brother Edge’s early years in U2 for the December 2005 issue of ‘Word Magazine’. Trevor, Mary and Anthony Murphy live quietly throughout Europe. As of 2004, Daniel Figgis is currently composer in residence with Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown, Dublin. His most recent composition, Post Production, was performed at the Winter Garden, New York City,

in December 2006. After much talk, years of anticipation from fans, and with much input from the band, The Virgin Prunes’ discography was remastered and reissued on Mute Records, which included ...If I Die, I Die, The Moon Looked Down and Laughed, Over the Rainbow, Heresie and an album of selections from the A New Form of Beauty series. In 2006 Dave ID-Busaris, Guggi and Gavin Friday contributed a track to the sea shanty collection Rogue’s Gallery, appearing in the track listing as Three Pruned Men.lita but with significant differences: it takes place in Central Europe, and the protagonist is unable to consummate his passion with his stepdaughter, leading to his suicide. The theme of ephebophilia was already touched on by Nabokov in his short story A Nursery Tale, written in 1926. Also, in the 1932 Laughter in the Dark, Margot Peters is 16 and already had an affair when middle-aged Albinus is attracted to her. In chapter three of the novel The Gift (written in Russian in 1935–1937) the similar gist of Lolita’s first chapter is outlined to the protagonist Fyodor Cherdyntsev by his obnoxious landlord Shchyogolev as an idea of a novel he would write “if I only had the time”: a man marries a widow only to gain access to her young daughter, who however resists all his passes. Shchyogolev says it happened “in reality” to a friend of his; it is made clear to the reader that it concerns himself and

his stepdaughter Zina (fifteen at the time of marriage) who becomes the love of Fyodor’s life and his child bride. In April 1947 Nabokov wrote to Edmund Wilson: “I am writing ... a short novel about a man who liked little girls – and it’s going to be called The Kingdom by the Sea...” The work expanded into Lolita during the next eight years. Nabokov used the title A Kingdom by the Sea in his 1974 pseudoautobiographic novel Look at the Harlequins! for a Lolita-like book written by the narrator who, in addition, travels with his teenage daughter Bel from motel to motel after the death of her mother; later, his fourth wife is Bel’s look-alike and shares her birthday.

http://www.virginprunes.com/articles/virginprunescom_gavin_interview_part_1.html Virginprunes.com Gavin interview - Part 1 Published 13-09-04 After the work on the re-releases had been completed, Virginprunes.com caught up with Gavin in late August to find out how the project had progressed from initial idea to final execution. Keen to explain the process, in this first installment of the interview Gavin takes us through the building of the relationship with Mute Records and explains the detailed thinking behind the sleeve re-designs. - Mute Records has struck me as the ideal home for the Virgin Prunes’ back catalogue for many years. In fact, in 1986 I heard through the grapevine that they had been interested in releasing The Moon Looked Down And Laughed, though this never came to fruition - is this true? - Mute are the perfect resting place for Virgin Prunes. In 1986 as far as I can remember there was interest from Beggars Banquet, but they only wanted to release an EP. I rejected the idea and foolishly went with New Rose. - How did the 2004 re-releases come about? For example, who contacted who, when did contact begin, what were the stages of the process from initial contact to final versions of the CDs in your hands? - It was about four years ago I discovered that the band had very slowly over the years got back the

masters of most of our recordings. I contacted Daniel Miller at Mute Records, who said he was very interested, but Mute was far too busy at that time. About a year later Daniel contacted me saying he wanted to go ahead with the re-release of the back catalog, so roughly over the last three years. Why so long? Many reasons. Mute went to EMI [via acquisition] which held things up at bit. Then legal affairs, missing artwork, re-mastering and digital restoration took a long while. Then my illness [Gavin underwent back surgery in February 2002] and my own work held things up. So, it took about three to four years. - Did you experience any major problems or delays while bringing everything together? - The case of missing artwork and tapes that I was told we had, but then could not be found??? The most distressing thing was that ALL THE ORIGINAL ARTWORK FROM ALL THE SLEEVES HAS GONE MISSING, along with many many pictures, not to mention some multi-tracks. I am still searching. Who mislaid them? Somewhere between Mary, Strongman and New Rose? I tried so hard, it held up things for close to a year. I finally decided to go to my own ‘small’ stash of VP images and work from them. Tape transfer was complex. A lot of the tapes had to be ‘baked’. Don’t want to go all serious on ya, you would be better off asking an engineer. In short, the getting together of this took a lot of time - it was at times like shitting a football. But then all good things take time… isn’t that right?

- What is the expected audience for the An Exhibition promotional compilation - is it for the press, or will it also be released for fans to buy? Who chose the tracks and how were the choices made? - Press/promo at the moment. Yes, I understand it will be ‘available’ to fans and not at £250. We decided on two tracks off each album. I couldn’t choose, so Olivier, Our Blessed Curator, did the deed. - Mute is calling these re-releases the first “official” releases on CD. Does this mean that the Rough Trade and New Rose CDs were released without your permission? - Rough Trade released only …If I Die, I Die and it disappeared almost as quickly as it was released. It never was distributed as far as I could see, so a half-hearted effort is not an official release in my mind. New Rose… these re-releases had nothing to do with most of the band except for Mary and Strongman. Once again they almost disappeared as soon as they came out. Were they actually released? No distribution as far as I can tell, a total joke. Then within a month or so New Rose went bankrupt and the back catalog disappeared up the arse of God knows who…? As for the artwork and sound quality on the New Rose effort, don’t get me going… shameful. So yes, I see this as the first ‘official’ re-release of Virgin Prunes. - The most initially striking aspect of these rereleases is the new sleeve designs. Only “… If I Die, I Die” is faithful to the original release and the others have changed quite radically. For some long-term fans it has been disorientating to see

“the Pagan Lovesong cover” used for A New Form Of Beauty and “the Baby Turns Blue cover” used for Over The Rainbow. Of course there’s a logic to this - the picture used on A New Form Of Beauty is of Guggi in the Pig Children performance, for example, which is clearly relevant to A New Form Of Beauty - but why redesign in the first place rather than just use the original covers? - All the original A New Form Of Beauty artwork is gone/mislaid/stolen/destroyed - who knows? I have seriously spent the last two years searching. It breaks me heart. I had to resort to a small collection of photos I had kept. My hands were tied - the original drawing by Guggi was badly damaged and sadly, as we say here, ‘fucked’. So where could I go? ‘Pig Children’ was my first thought, which lead on to the Guggi shot a la Pagan Lovesong. The original shot looked too glossy for the feel/sound/vibe of the music, so it was treated. Why orange??? Maybe it has got something to do with the Catholic in me, I don’t know. It just felt right and we did tend to over-do the Blue vibe. Believe me, I am a purist at heart… The inner shot was taken at Futurama 1981, the only time we ever performed Beast (well, what we were allowed to, as they pulled the plugs after five minutes, etc.) So that shot was in context. Also, I wanted all the sleeves to have their own unique look. Pagan Lovesong ended up on the …If I Die, I Die CD, so I felt the picture of Guggi was too strong to be completely lost. The only other option was

a plain white cover - we tried that and it felt all wrong. I am talking weeks of trying out covers - I broke Slim [the sleeve designer] Smith’s heart. What we ended up with is GREAT in my mind and so far it has blown a few minds. Sorry if it offends… We never felt the 12” ANFOB sleeve which was used by Strongman and Mary for the New Rose CD looked right, it just didn’t transfer down to CD size very well. That’s not to mention the unbearable quality of the transfer from 12” cover to CD cover that New Rose did. Jesus, talk about bad artwork… Anyway, this the first time the complete musical side of ANFOB has all been released on CD. So it is ANFOB. The typeface was hand done, and rather beautifully I must say, by Slim Smith For …If I Die, I Die, once again the original went missing, this was the closest image I could find. The blue border may have worked on the original, but we decided it was stronger without the border on CD format. I tried to re-create the Brown/Blue vibe within the booklet using many never before used photos. Slim did a wonderful job on the booklet. Thanks man! On Heresie, the photo of me and the photo of Guggi walking up the stairs, these photos we had originally planned to use on the cover, but the French label L’Invitation au Suicide went with the still from a Gothic 20’s movie. We never liked it and when it came about to re-use it - even way back when it was released on vinyl in the late 80’s by New Rose - we were not allowed the rights to use the image.
