entral FC has played 4 matches thus far into the 2013/2014 season and remain unbeaten. With 2 matches each in the TT Pro League and the First Citizens Cup, the Sharks have been extremely strong at the back. Custodian, Jan Michael Williams has hardly had a save to make in regular time with the combination of John, Benjamin, Jack and Goodridge proving to be a solid defensive wall. This defensive stubborness certainly could not be seen in first few minutes of our first match against Defence Force in the league. In only the 6th minute of play, Kerry Joseph gave the “Army Men” the lead. The Sharks however did not succumb to the pressure and continued to control the flow of the game. It soon became a tale of two captains though when Corry Rivers, the Defence Force captain, handled an Elton John cross in the box. Jason Marcano, the Central FC skipper, took command of the resulting penalty and calmly got the Sharks off the mark in the game and in this new season. Central continued to command the game into the second half and new signing, Dwight Quintero made full use of the team’s possession. He placed an excellent left footed shot into the bottom right hand corner to give Central the lead. Many thought that Quintero’s sublime finish would not be outdone for the evening but they were to be proved wrong. Teenage striker, Rundell Winchester seized upon an error by Defence Force goalkeeper, Kevin Graham to score a fantastic overhead (bicycle) kick that went in off the underside of the bar. Graham misjudged the flight of the ball and flapped at a cross but surely did not expect Winchester to acrobatically connect with the bouncing ball. The supporters, who came out in their numbers were certainly rewarded with a treat of a match that ended 3-1 to Central FC.

Central FC’s second league encounter against Caledonia AIA, unfortunately paled in comparison
to their first. Both teams failed to create any clear cut chances. Jamal Jack was a rock at the back and kept new Caledonia AIA striker, Kithson Bain firmly shackled for the entire match. In the end, both teams remained organized and played out to a passive 0-0 draw. The league then took a break for teams to compete in the First Citizens Cup. The quarter final match up saw the Sharks face cup nemesis North East Stars. North East proved to be a bogey side for Central last season by knocking them out of two cup competitions. Central however buried the bad omens by putting in a clinical performance to win 2-1. Hector Sam, playing at the tip of a diamond midfield struck a thunderous shot from just outside the 18 yard box to give Central the lead. That effort was quickly followed with a powerful shot from Rundell Winchester who beat Clean John at his near post. Winchester was continuing his good start to the season and was a constant menace to the North East defence. As the game drew on, Central began to baton down the hatches with North East Stars pushing for a way back into the match. They finally found their goal from the boot of Trevin Caesar but it came just a little too late. The Sharks were then drawn against Couva rivals, W Connection FC and this encounter was anything but friendly, from the referees point of view at least. In just the 13th minute after kick off at the Ato Boldon Stadium, referee Rodphin Harris dismissed captain Marcano. Players, coaches and spectators alike remained bemused at the decision as confused silence broke across the ground. The silence was quickly rebuffed with Jan Michael Williams voicing his disapproval of the decision. Further into the match, referee Harris stole the spot light yet again once again as he sent Central head coach Fenwick to the stands. Assistant Marc Leslie was then thrust into taking charge of a Shark’s team that was a man and coach down.

Central deserves huge credit for the performance they put in after these moments. They continued to play with verve and energy. Although that verve did wane in the second half with W Connection trying to make the man advantage count, the Sharks organization and resilience were quite admirable. Even the introduction of recently suspended Joevin Jones could not inspire a threat to Williams’ goal. Therefore penalty kicks were needed to decide a winner. Each team scored their first two kicks but Williams then pulled off two brilliant saves to deny the kicks from Clarence and Frederick. Dwight Quintero had been on the field, less than 10 minutes but he buried his spot kick to put the pressure back on Connection. That pressure was on the young shoulders of Neil Benjamin Jr and the pressure showed. Benjamin blasted his kick over the bar to spark wild celebrations from the Central players and supporters. Central will play Defence Force in the First Citizens final at the Hasley Crawford Stadium.

fter having done an interview with Jan in our first edition, we were fortunate to have another chance to speak with the T&T shot stopper. This time we took a trip with Jan to the United Arab Emirates who was the host for the recently concluded OSN Cup. He shares his experiences of his tour with the national team to the Middle East. Having played with the National team in Europe and North America, Jan was asked about his experience travelling half way across the world to the Middle East. From a footballer’s point of view he immediately described the weather and playing conditions to be different and hard to work with as temperatures ranged from 40-43 degrees Celsius. The long hours of travel to get to their destination was also a challenge as the team only got n a day before their first game with little time to prepare.
Speaking highly of the 53-year-old former Canada’s men national team coach, Jan has been impressed with how the Trinidadian born coach has been able to relate and understand the local players and share his foreign experience and professionalism with the team. Jan also recognized the new president of the TTFF, Mr. Raymond Tim Kee and secretary Sheldon Phillips for their roles in the change of leadership and believes that we can expect a lot from Trinidad football in the future under Mr. Hart. SHANE STANFORD
On the field he felt that it was great experience for T&T to be partaking in tournaments of higher quality and felt that no matter who they played against, the focus was always on producing the right results on the pitch. Off the field the Soca Warriors were privileged to be guests at the King’s Palace in Saudi Arabia. Jan described this as a once in a lifetime opportunity and one of the perks of being an international footballer. “It was amazing to experience the culture and the different way of life in different parts of the world.” There were the things that they could and could not do as they had to respect some of the religious views of the country but the reception was warming and a great learning experience off the field for all the players. “Learning new cultures and experiencing new places is all part of the fun of being a footballer” according to Jan. With regards to the progress made with the national team under the leadership of our new coach Stephen Hart, the 28- year- old Soca Warrior was pleased with the transition of the new coach coming in and the positive impact that it has had on the players.

n television, wearing his all black suit and red tie, he is known by beloved viewers as Sampson Nanton, TV anchor extraordinaire turned Executive Producer of CNC3. On the football field, however, he is Sampson “Ronaldo” Nanton, star of the CNC3/ Slam 100.5FM football team with deft close control and a sniper for a left foot. He led his team to victory in the RBL Celebrity Bragging Rights Cup against One Caribbean Media, a spectacle game in the 2013 Vision Forward International Breast Cancer Football Tournament – “Give Breast Cancer the Boot.”

For the official tournament, eight female football teams assembled at the St Mary’s College grounds in St Clair on the sultry Sunday morning of October, 6th to vie for a chance at hoisting the tournament’s challenge trophy. It was the third annual tournament, an event geared toward raising awareness about breast cancer by engaging the community through friendly sport. Though friendly in nature, it was evident that each team showed up to win from the sound of the first whistle. Central FC, Malick City FC, UWI Girls, VF Ladies, Malabar Superstars, VF Fahrenheit, Defence Force and La Brea FC were split into two groups of four. After a full day of 30 minute games, it was amazing to see these ladies run at full strength when it came down to the semi-finals where VF Ladies were victorious against UWI Girls and Malick City ousted Malabar Superstars. The RBL Celebrity Bragging Rights Cup between CNC3/Slam 100.5FM and One Caribbean Media entertained the crowd before the final. Sampson Nanton played the lone striker for CNC3/Slam 100.5fm, but despite a couple half-chances, was not able to convert them himself. Instead, Nanton assisted Michael
Charles in scoring his second goal with a left footed cross across the face of the goal. OCM’s Kwesi Hopkinson then buried a goal into the back of the net and captain Jason “J-Walcott” Williams, with surprisingly lightning speed, placed another ball into the inside side netting to tie the game. Unfortunately for OCM, their goalkeeper, who was drafted from VF Fahrenheit only moments before the game, fumbled the ball in the box under no pressure and winger Rushawn Murphy pounced on it to score the winning goal for CNC3/Slam 100.5FM. 3-2 was the final score in favour of CNC3/Slam 100.5FM. It is not every time in football that the best teams in a tournament reach to its final game, but it certainly happened this time. VF Ladies and Malick respectively possessed a chemistry and maturity that surpassed the other six teams in the tournament. They were both tired for the final game, having fought through at least two hours of game play in the especially hot sun throughout the day, but Malick’s energy could not match that of VF Ladies who came out on top in a 2-0 win. 14
Tasha St Louis scored the first goal and eleven year old Isa Sayeed, one of two young men allowed to play in the tournament, connected with a cross from the far right to score the second goal which secured their victory. “I scored five for the tournament, eh!” he was sure to remind me when it was all over. The tournament was sponsored by Super Industrial Services Ltd, Republic Bank, SporTT, Blue Waters, Queen’s Resorts, Hydro Park and the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society. In particular, the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society provided free breast cancer screenings throughout the day, via their mobile unit. The Ministry of Health also had a tent where they gave out pamphlets to educate the public about breast cancer and general healthy nutritional practices. Congratulations to VF Ladies and CNC3/Slam 100.5FM on their victories. More congratulations to Best Defensive Player, Taylor Watson and the Most Valuable Player, Akeela Oliver of VF Ladies. Hats-off also to Vision Forward International and its director, former national footballer and Managing Director of Central FC, Brent Sancho for coordinating the successful event. KWAME WEEKES

oo many people criticise Pro League football without ever seeing a game. It may not be La Liga or Series A, but once you allow yourself to put aside your negative thoughts and get behind your local team, it’s exciting stuff. Trinidadians say they support Real Madrid and Chelsea, but how can you have pride in a team that you can never interact with? We’re proud to be Central and we want the community to get behind us and fly the flag for the whole region.” -Marvin Oliver, Central FC Player

ason “JW” Williams aka J-Walcott is a local media host and entertainer whose career has encompassed hosting the morning show on Red 96.7 FM, the “Synergy Nights” programme on Synergy TV and venturing into the soca performance industry alongside Red 96.7 co-host, Ancil “Blaze” Isaac Jr. The combination of “JW and Blaze” is a unique dynamic within the local entertainment fraternity and their chemistry has allowed them to achieve universal acclaim and respect. The dynamic duo have consistently produced hits such as “Eat Ah Food”, “Work” and “We Time” but without a doubt, “Palance” has been their most successful song to date. Mega hit, “Palance” allowed them to seize the International Power Soca Monarch and T&T Road March titles quite comfortably in 2010. The duo however have not gotten carried away with their success since then. They remain focused on all their endeavours and strive towards continuing to produce entertainment that brings maximum enjoyment to the people of Trinidad and Tobago. In a recent interview, J-Walcott asserted his commitment to positive ventures such as the VFI Breast Cancer Football Tournament - “Give Breast Cancer the Boot”. J-Walcott led an OCM team against a CNC3/Slam100.5FM side in the aforementioned tournament’s RBL Celebrity Bragging Rights Cup. He stated, “This tournament is something I fully support. Sancho is somebody I have a lot of respect for and any venture I know Sancho is involved in, I know it’s something positive. In my capacity in the media, I always render assistance. He is a man who puts his words into action and whatever way I can support, I dere.” 21
Commenting prior to his match up in the Bragging Rights Cup, J-Walcott merely wished for a competitive game and his performance certainly matched that. He consistently terrorized the CNC3/ Slam100.5FM defence with his blistering pace, reminiscent of Theo Walcott of Arsenal. Spectators remained stunned on the sidelines at the sheer ease at which he burst past his markers on the left wing to score. Unfortunately OCM’s finishing belied their build up play and they succumbed to the CNC3/Slam100.5FM team 3-2. J-Walcott even spared a few words about Central FC who are currently unbeaten in the 2013/2014 season.” it’s a team that I monitor. I’m not from the central region but I’m able to look at all teams. I’m able to appreciate hard work. The team (Central FC) is looking good. I’ve always kinda followed what they’ve been doing and all the best to them as they go forward in all their endeavours.”

Pray for Akeem A
keem Adams is a 22 year old T&T national defender who has played for the Under 15, Under 17, Under 20 and the full international team. He was handed his debut for the full national team as a 16 year old under Francisco Maturana. He has played for a variety of local Pro League outfits, with Central FC being the most recent. Akeem hails from Point Fortin and almost signed for his hometown team of Point Fortin Civic FC at the start of the 2013/2014 season. However a change of fortune saw him handed an opportunity at Hungarian first division outfit, Ferencvaros. Akeem, who has often been described as a cheerful and focused individual signed a 1 year contract with the Hungarian team. Unfortunately after just 6 games for his new team, Akeem’s fortune took a turn for the worst. A few hours after a training session, he suffered a massive heart attack and had to be outfitted with a mechanical heart to try to save his life. Pál Orosz, Ferencváros’ Managing Director stated, “all FIFA-required cardiac tests were carried out on him, all tests were negative. He’s played through the pre-season, played through the matches, there was no sign of problems. Nothing. He felt ill last night and called one of our colleagues, Edit Tóth, who called an ambulance. Our players living near keem went to his flat after the alarm and stayed with him until the ambulance arrived”.
27
Ferencvaros has covered all of his medical costs to date and have even arranged for his mother Ancilla and brother Akini to fly out to be at his bedside. The entire Hungarian footballing community have also responded to calls for well wishes and assistance for young Akeem. Droves of supporters turned up to donate blood while other clubs displayed t-shirts and banners of support. Akeem has undergone four surgeries to date with the last being the amputation of his left leg below the knee. His leg had developed necrosis as a result of poor circulation and had to be removed to save his life. He is still in critical condition and requires a heart transplant. Therefore we ask each and everyone to keep Akeem in their prayers as this brave warrior continues to fight for his life. “I Support Akeem” t-shirts are available at all Native Spirit stores nationwide with proceeds going towards helping with Akeem’s recovery. Heart Conditions in Professional Athletes
W
ithin recent times the sports pages have been filled with an increasing number of professional athletes succumbing to various heart conditions. Hence, it begs the question, is heart disease becoming more prevalent in top level athletes? Oswin Birchwood, the Central F.C. trainer and physiotherapist does not believe so. He asserts that the publicity is merely a sign of the times. In an era of globalization and the freedom of information worldwide, it is simply a lot easier for these unfortunate situations to be publicized. There are situations where players may decide to not inform the club doctors of a medical condition for fear of foregoing his contractual status with the club. Diabetes is one such condition. If however, it is not treated regularly and under control, the player will begin to show signs in training. There is also the situation where players and athletes may not even be aware of an underlying disease or heart condition. Weak heart valves or holes in the heart are not easily detected and require very specific tests to identify the problem. Over a period of time, intensive training may bring the condition to light but by then, the situation may pose an immediate threat to the player’s life. Many clubs worldwide do not implement specific cardiac tests during medicals and this is something that Mr. Birchwood believes must change, for the benefit of the club and the player’s long term health. He states that there should be a mandate for clubs to perform drug and cardiac stress tests on all players and that all protocols be followed with the screening process for new players. “New players, especially foreign players, come from different circumstances and conditions and it is the responsibility of the club to ensure that all medical protocol is in place and adhered to.”
With respect to Akeem Adams, Birchwood suggests that recent medical updates point to a heart virus being at the root of his ailment. Akeem suffered a massive heart attack after training with his club side, Ferencvaros in Hungary. His condition recently deteriorated and his left leg had to be amputated. Even in the face of all this adversity though, Birchwood suggested that young Akeem will be able to recover and called on everyone to support him. “He will need the support of everyone. Spiritual, emotional and physical support. If he is able to pull through, he can be a great ambassador for sport and for people in general. I would like to personally wish him the best”
