Book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice Music and Lyrics by Andrew Lippa Based on characters created by Charles AddamsFrom the Director
“I’m feeling happy, I’m feeling sad… at the moment we start weeping, that’s when we should smile.”
Gomez’s lyrics in his song to his beloved daughter sums up my feelings towards this year’s CCGS Musical production perfectly. Knowing it’s my last production here, it has made me reflect deeply on all that I’ve come to know at this amazing school and although it does make me sad to say goodbye, I smile at how fortunate I have been. Working with CCGS’s incredible pool of student talent, inside this world-class building and working with the stunning commitment of my team to make it all magically happen.
We see it all happening again in ‘The Addams Family Musical’ with beautiful examples of dance talent, hilarious comic acting and stunning vocals. With this, the amazing set and costume team who have once again worked so hard to create a visual treat. For this show, they have depicted the satirical inversion of the American family perfectly with their wealth and eccentricity clear and evident alongside their supernatural ancestors who share their macabre interests.
This was not an easy show by any stretch of the imagination. The musical score is challenging and immense credit must go to Mr and Mrs Hunt who
have worked so hard with the pit band students to pull this show off to a fantastic standard, and to Narelle Evans who has worked brilliantly with our vocalists to help it all sound phenomenal.
The choreography, as always, is just a pleasure to witness. Working alongside Mrs Koch and her students is always so easy and, importantly, fun. In this show, Mrs Koch saw a chance for a tango scene and took it on, as always, to a level you’ve not seen in any version of this show anywhere else before. She and her dancers are a gift that keeps on giving to our school productions.
To make a musical theatre production happen with almost 100 students on stage takes more than just lots of hours of commitment. It needs skill, dedicated preparation, patience and resilience. As a team of students and staff, we work knowing that the show dates are ‘Just Around the Corner’ and that looming presence makes you work hard each week (on a Friday afternoon or Sunday) when you are tired, busy with real-life or maybe even a little under the weather. I thank everyone involved for their incredible work ethic to get us to show week. It is truly a team effort.
Finally, to my production team…oh, how I will miss you. To do this every year, is just a huge credit to the amazing (and maybe slightly crazy!) educators you all are. The working relationships I have with you all are joyous and saying goodbye to this is as I am ‘pulled in a new direction’ is so incredibly hard. Thank you for another great year in which you have made many students have the time of their lives on our PAC stage. I am weeping as I say goodbye to all at CCGS, but it is because you have all made me smile so very many times.
Enjoy the show.
Mr Lee Fleming Director of Performing ArtsFrom the Musical Director
Infused with Latin, Jazz, Pop and other styles, The Addams Family Musical brings the much-loved characters from the classic TV show to the stage with original music that brilliantly captures their crazy, wacky adventures and, of course, all the comedy that ensues.
It has also been a crazy, wacky adventure learning and preparing the music with the cast and orchestra. Special thanks to Mrs Narelle Evans who has joined the Production team this year to teach all the songs to the ensemble and leads. She has done an amazing job of this, ably assisted in rehearsals by our incredibly talented accompanists, Mr Andrew Swan and Miss Kimberley Gilbert.
Students in the orchestra have also done an extraordinary job of learning all the music – a monumental task to perform a full show of professional standard music. It’s been a wild ride and a lot of fun!
Thanks also to Mrs Samantha Hunt for her wonderful playing – especially those tricky clarinet bits.
Congratulations to the entire team - students and staff, cast and crew, and everyone who has contributed to making the show happen. It is both a privilege and a pleasure to be part of such a dedicated group, to work with such talented and enthusiastic students – what a family!
Mr Christopher Hunt Director of Instrumental MusicFrom the c horeographer
Quirky, gothic and playful! Dramatic, exaggerated and dark! Tango, twist and rigor mortis! This show has it all. Choreographing The Addams Family has been a surreal experience. The absurd becomes the norm and the peculiar is captivating – dancing in unexpected eccentric chaos.
The ensemble was tasked with embodying the characters of ancestors, dead, but full of energy and personality. The “Tango De Amor” has been created to show the passionate connection between Morticia and Gomez with our talented dance ensemble building the energy and tension. “Moon and Me” is whimsical and romantic with a touch of craziness and disorder that will have you mesmerised by its beauty and charm. This musical has been surprising and fun. It makes no sense at all yet is entirely endearing and true. It has been an absolute blast to create the movement for this production.
During the creation of this show, there has been a sad undertone knowing this is our last musical working with Director Lee Fleming. It has been an absolute honour working on seven Senior School productions with Lee. The incredible highs, challenging lows, and indescribable joy of creating masterpieces will always stay with me and the many students who had the privilege of working with Lee. Full disclosure, Fleming… you’re a CCGS legend!
