University High School won as the overall champion in this year’s University Day Celebration after garnering 694 points ending the one year reign of the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA). CBA fell short with 87 points followed by the College of Engineering (CoE) in the third spot with 468 total points, allowing the College of Nursing (400) to go after with a difference of 68 points. The College of Computer Studies (CCS) completed the top five with 332 points. High School reclaimed the glory as the U-Day champion after 14 years, leaving the College of Business and Accountancy and the College of Nursing, both were former champions, challenged to get back on the claimed post. When HS Senior Provincial Board Member Jan Christian Española was asked what made them win, he stressed, “The efforts of the Provincial Board under the leadership of Ms. Jothamme Enriquez and the support of the teachers and staff most especially our principal, Dr. Felnor Importante, made us the over-all champion of the University Day 2011.” In the Literary-Musical and Special Events categories, High School accumulated a total of 382 points in winning first place in Acapella Quartet (Male),

Too Hot to Handle:

University Day's

Burning Hot Issues

Issue No. 1:

Centralian Star’s Blunder: Who is the real star?

winner that night of August 23. However, after the search, the College of Education protested, saying the scores were erroneously tabulated. The issue rested for five (5) days while the declared star was disturbed because of the protest. How did this happen? Blame it on the pen tabulating the results, or on the hand in control of the pen?

The Search for the Centralian Star is one of University Day’s best. It is one of the most contested titles among Centralians. Unexpectedly this year, a major, major error happened? The contestant from the Truth: According to CPU Republic College of Medicine, Joseph Brent Sardua was declared as Senator Allen Dave Fuego,

OPINION chairperson of the Quest for Centralian Star, a decision was made by the Committee on Protest headed by Atty. Samson Averia regarding the case, and issued an order to re-compute the scores on September 28, 2011. The truth unfolded: the contestant of the College of Education, Nerida Grace Tayo, got the title, followed by the representatives of the College of Medicine, Joseph Brent Sardua, and the College of Computer Studies, Michael Penacerada, as second and third placers respectively.

Issue No. 2:

Alleged Poetry Choir “Ihaw” Festival The issue sizzled when, the University High School won the Poetry Choir contest to the surprise of the audience who were expecting other colleges to win. When results were announced, the High School cheered and clapped in their signature style but the rest of the audience responded with loud “boos” signifying discontentment.

Truth: The members of the Poetry Choir Contest Committee, after being silent for several days, clarified the issue when they were asked about it by a CE correspondent. According to them, no “Ihaw” or any irregularity happened during the Poetry Choir competition last September 3. The judges were highlyrespected experts in poetry choir and came from different universities in the city. They evaluated the performances according to the criteria of the contest. The High School, on their part, never expected to win. When asked their reaction about the alleged “Ihaw”, they stressed

that their values won’t allow during the pageant. them to do it.

Issue No. 3:

Students Sunburned Due to Late Parade The foot parade last September 2 was one of the highlights of the University Day celebration. The event was successful except the parade started late, much to the annoyance of many Centralians.

Truth: The reason… We, the students, were the reason. The assembly time was 5:30 AM, but the students were late, forcing the committee to start the parade at about 8:00 AM instead of 6 AM. Furthermore, the formation of the initials, “CPU”, by the students delayed the event. Though it was amazingly unique, the idea was quite new to the students who found it tricky to fill in the letters.

Issue No. 4:

Missing: Mr. Education Many were wondering why Yong Jae Pi (Mr. Education 2011) was not in the pictorial of Mr. and Ms. CPU 2011. His picture was neither included in the promotional poster nor in the CPU Website.

Truth: The naked truth… Mr. Education, a Korean soccer player, backed out from the Pageant because of a scheduled game. However, because of bad weather, the game was cancelled and Yong Jae Pi decided to join again, though he decided only on the day before the Talents Night. Furthermore, Mr. Pi also said that he wanted Ms. Candelaria Evangelista (Ms. Education 2011) to have a supportive partner

Issue No. 5:

Cheerdance Winners: Where was Engineering? The College of Business and Accountancy (CBA), the College of Engineering (CoE) and the College of Computer Studies (CCS) respectively won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in this year’s Pep Squad (Cheerdance) Competition, September 3. The three winners were privileged to compete again during the Milo Marathon, September 18. However, only CBA, Nursing and CCS joined the event, thus almost everyone wondered, “Where did Engineering go?”

3 contests used the ranking system in which the arbiters rank the contestants, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on and then get the average to determine the final ranking. In other contests, the judges get the average of the scores of the participants according to the criteria then rank them from highest to lowest. There is no uniform system in judging for all contests. Each competition has a unique set of criteria and method of scoring.

Issue No. 7:

“NO AIR!”

Included in “In the Dumps” section of this newsletter, was the issue raised by an anonymous student about the use of the air conditioners in the Rose Memorial Auditorium during the Search for Mr. & Ms. CPU. Different contests call for different criteria and different judges. Students inquired how judges rated and scored the contestants in a competition. Did they use the ranking system, or the averaging system? Truth: The answer: It depends on the contest and the judges. Some

eauty and brains ruled the stage of Rose Memorial Auditorium on September 3, 2011 as candidates of the different colleges and departments in this university did their best to grab the title as Mr. and Ms. Central Philippine University 2011. Elegantly and sveltely walking on the runway in a gold and glittery gown, Ms. CBA, Charmaine Grace Deatras, bested the other ten female candidates making her way to be crowned as Ms. CPU 2011. While putting his full faith and trust in the Divine Providence, Mr. CBA, Val Peter James Billones, aced other male candidates as he outsmarted them in interview portion. But what awaits the two after being crowned as the king and queen of CPU? Let’s talk in a serious mode, who are

these winners and what did they do to win the crown. Let’s go in depth.

CE: What does winning the title mean to you? Is this something you aspired for long ago? Val: For me, winning this competition is an important dream made to a reality. I never aspired of joining this big event and to win the title Mr. CPU. It’s just simply God’s way of proving His ability to make dreams come true. Charmaine: It opens a new chapter in my life as a Centralian. I aspired for it a long time ago, but having the doubts with myself, I hesitated at first. The title helped me to realize that I can do more things than usual. It’s a gift from G o d

Not only that I could express myself to other contestants but also learning about their cultures in their respective colleges and respecting it. Charmaine: A one of a kind unforgettable experience! It’s never been a competition of people hungry for the title, it’s a very friendly one. I’m lucky enough to belong in this year’s batch of contestants. They never ran out of jokes, we would laugh during rehearsals, and talk about various things. We became hungry for snacks together, been nervous together and enjoyed together. Somehow I can say that they are not my competitors but they are my new friends.

Val: All of us are already winners but reality speaks that there must be a winner. For me, it was all because of God. He enabled me to carry out the things that He had in store for me that made me stand out. Charmaine: We are all winners, being the representative of our respective colleges is a great honor. We have strengths that enabled us to be qualified in the pageant, but for me I just stayed true and sincere with myself, walk, actions and answers in all interviews. I let God lead the way all throughout the competition. CE: How does it feel to be crowned Mr./Ms. CPU 2011?

CENTER STAGE announced that I’m Ms. CPU 2011. I was overwhelmed because I never thought that I would win. I’m really grateful, because with the title, I had the opportunity to share a "lollapalooza" experience with my extraordinary, true friends, mentors and loved ones. Now I can say it again, God indeed loves me. CE: Do you think that this competition contributed to your personal development? What aspect of the competition do you consider most rewarding? Val: Yah! It has furthermore enhanced my social, emotional, and spiritual skills. The most rewarding time was when I just laid down everything to God and said: “Let Your will be done.” Charmaine: It contributed a lot! Considering the fact that before the pageant I was just a simple girl who was afraid to be in the limelight and chose to blend in the crowd. It seems that the experience boosted my self esteem. It also strengthened my faith in God, with all the ups and downs in the competition. The most rewarding part for me was being on stage, and hearing my friends’ yells and support as expressions of their love, and seeing my family in the front seats looking at me with great admiration, all fears and pressure turned into a big smile with my heart pounding of thankfulness.

time and no matter what would be the outcome, the important thing is that I am speaking from my heart, acknowledging God. Charmaine: It’s the most challenging part of the pageant for me, because expressing your thoughts in front of a keen audience is difficult. I asked advice from my advisers and never go without prayers! I’m really dreaded with the questions that were too personal because I might say the wrong answer that could hurt someone. I don’t want to be emotional in front of a big crowd, that’s kind of shameful for me. CE: The title of Mr/Ms. CPU brings with responsibility. Do you think it puts pressure on you as a person? How does it affect your lifestyle? Are there drastic changes that have to be made in your behavior? Val: It takes a lot of responsibility being the Mr. CPU. I must constantly guard my heart, words, and actions. Charmaine: Definitely, it does. I’m not perfect to feel so confident that I can be exactly what people expect Ms. CPU should be. Now, I need to be more lady-like and lessen the “ROTC-cadet-like”. I’m more conscious with my actions, words, and more careful enough in decision-making but I also make sure that Charmaine still remains just as she is, only improved. CE: Since you stepped into this university, have you ever imagined yourself joining and winning this pageant?

Charmaine: I did, but never thought of winning. I received some invitations to attend the screening for Ms. CBA since my first year here in CPU, but due to some reasons I wasn't chosen to be Ms. CBA. I would say that right things happen at the right time and God’s plan always prevails. CE: As the reigning Mr./Ms. CPU, what can you do to uphold the true essence of the Central Spirit? Val: Knowledge is useless if not used for God’s greatest glory. For in all things, achievements, dreams, and hopes, it’s still Jesus that matters most. Charmaine: Just be a Centralian in heart and mind, and I’ll try to excel as I’m guided with CPU’s vision and mission. It might be ideal, easy-to-say-and-hard-todo, but if coupled with sincerity and God’s wisdom, upholding Central Spirit will be possible. CE: What do you think was your edge that made you different and stand out among other contestants? Val: I didn’t have any edge. It’s just that I put everything in God’s control. Charmaine: “If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for there will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself.” It’s a line from my favorite poem, Desiderata. We are all unique, and we stand out in our own ways. It was God’s plan for me to win and I believe He has greater

5 plans for my fellow contestants. CE: What is your message to the aspiring Centralians who would like to join the pageant? Any words of advice? Val: To all Centralians: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” It’s not about the looks, talents, gifts, potential and skills. It’s all about Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Even religion can’t save us, but only our relationship with Jesus that could make the impossible happen in our lives– no more, no less, only Jesus. Charmaine: First things first. SMILE and always smile! My wise friend once said to me that I must not look around and seek others' weaknesses and strengths but look up to God because He is the greatest. With God’s guidance, you will know what you need to develop, do and follow. Share your talents and abilities because if you don’t, they might go to waste and be buried. If it’s really for you, then be humble and grateful. If not, look around and you’ll see many doors that are still open.

University holds first frisbee competition Engineering wins gold By Ron Adrian Dionaldo

Our victory is because of God’s grace!” gladly said Dr. Importante in an ambush interview. High School also overthrew CBA as the victor of sports after the former accumulated 300 points in the Sport and Athletics category whereas the latter only garnered 278 points. “We, too, have done our best. But I can pinpoint this defeat to miscommunication and lack of openness among us. We are all in the process of adapting to a new environment of leadership which is a bit harder for all of us. Managing the biggest population is no easy task. After all, we tried giving the best shot for our province”, stressed CBA Governor

Mark Gano. Meanwhile, the College of Engineering aced all except one academic contests namely General Information and Math, giving way for the College of Theology to once again take reign of the Bible Quiz. The U-Day Awarding Ceremony was held at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park, September 30, 2011.

The College of Engineering made record after besting other teams and emerging as winner in the first ever University Day Ultimate Frisbee competition. Out of nine initial participants, the number went down to two as the College of Engineering (CoE) and the College of Hospitality Management (CHM) fought for first place during the championship game held in the afternoon of September 3 at the University Parade Grounds with the former claiming victory in a final score of 13 against 2. Meanwhile, CHM made as far as second place and was followed by the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) in third place. When asked how it felt to win the first University Day Ultimate Frisbee competition, Engineering Team adviser Ms. Iann Mae Yangga said, “I feel proud of the players, especially since most of them are first year students.”

Furthermore, she stressed the importance of discipline and interest in the sport and hopes that by next year, ultimate frisbee will be given the same importance afforded to the other U-Day games and that the competition among the colleges will be more challenging. Ultimate frisbee is a noncontact sport played by many students in the campus, but it was only during this year that CPU saw its debut as an official game in the list of University Day activities.
