eeking to fill the vacancy left by Assemblyman Sterley Stanley, the East Brunswick Township Council approved a resolution appointing Dinesh Behal as its newest council member. A vacancy existed on the council as a result of the resignation of former councilman Stanley, who was sworn in as assemblyman on Jan. 26. The East Brunswick Democratic Municipal Committee presented to the township clerk the names of three nominees for the selection of a successor to fill the vacancy, according to the council. Council President Sharon Sullivan said the three selected nominees were Board of Education Member Liwu Hong, Jason Friedman and Dinesh Behal. With a unanimous vote, the council approved the resolution electing Behal as the governing body’s newest member on Feb. 22 during the council meeting via video conference. Once the resolution was approved, Mayor Brad Cohen swore Behal into office by having him recite the Oath of Office. (Continued on page 11)

Longtime friends, colleagues remember Superior Court Judge Peter Barnes III By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

T

he sudden passing of state Superior Court Judge Peter Barnes III on Feb. 22 has left longtime friends and colleagues reeling. He was 64. “This is a tough time for me and my family,” said Middlesex County Commissioner Charles Tomaro, who said he and Barnes were best of friends growing up together; both attended John P. Stevens High School in Edison. “His life will be a lasting memory for the rest of my life.” The pair screened together for Edison Township Council seats with the Edison

Democratic Organization (EDO) in 1995. With a difficult road to victory, they pounded the pavement from Memorial Day to election night, knocking on doors and eating pizza from local eateries from Tony’s Pizza and Peter Barnes III Restaurant to La Rosa’s Pizza every night because Barnes’ love of pizza, Tomaro said.

“We knocked on doors until we were elected,” Tomaro said as he recalled the campaign. Barnes served for 12 years on the council from 1996 to 2007. He served twice as council president. “He served as council president during his first term on council,” Tomaro said. “There was nobody as loyal as Peter Barnes. If he gave you his word, he did what he said. There’s not many people like that.” In an interview in 2016 when Barnes was nominated to be a Superior Court judge, he said while on the council, he led efforts with Tomaro to protect open space.

Tomaro said at least once a year they would vacation together with their families. Three years ago, they went to Italy; last year he noted Barnes did get to vacation in Key West, Florida, before the novel coronavirus pandemic, but the families were not able to get together. “We were looking forward to vacation together again,” Tomaro said. Barnes received his Bachelor of Arts in political science from Gettysburg College, received his Master of Business Administration in management from Fairleigh Dickinson and received his law degree

South River author’s children’s book ‘Sticks in a Bundle’ calls for unity By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

W

ith last year’s presidential election being one of the most divisive in the nation’s history, author Gigi Darko wrote “Sticks In a Bundle” to help children understand today’s political landscape. “I wrote this book because after the elections my daughter noticed a difference in our community. On Route 18 she noticed more political signs, more yelling, more anger from the different parties,” Darko said. “In our own home, we watched the elections in disbelief. She asked about who our new president would be and I couldn’t give her an answer with certainty. I decided to look at what is missing in our country from a child’s perspective.” A South River resident for 15 years, Darko said when parents have young children who are curious about current events, they have to find answers to their questions. “I am an assistant principal at

a school where we have students who do not have both parents. I want them to know it is OK to have one parent. This is a wonderful story about a child’s perspective in today’s climate. Parents can begin the conversation on the political climate of our country using the characters in this story.” “Sticks In a Bundle,” Darko said, is about a little girl named Yaya who traveled to her father’s home country ofGhana. Yaya lost her mother some time ago and travels to visit family. They travel to different places and enjoy the culture. In light of the plight of her country, the United States, she soon learns that her country is not in need of more materialistic things, but rather the one thing it is missing: unity. Darko said the main character is based out of South River, New Jersey and then she travels to Ghana, West Africa.

March 3, 2021M

“Initially, I wrote the book after a philanthropy mission trip a year or so ago. A group of friends and I went to Ghana, West Africa, and gave 1,500 students educational supplies, scholarships and personal aid,” Darko said. “On that trip, I realized how much everyday things can have so much meaning. I wrote the book then but the ending of the book had not been fleshed out yet.” Darko said once she saw how children reacted to the election, it was clear what she wanted to tell them. “The answers to the problems we face are sometimes right in front of us and oftentimes children see it better than adults,” Darko said. “They really do have that innocent insight that adults lack. So many of us have lost a loved one and it matters when children see their pain in the stories that they read.” Darko said she self-published her latest book through her publishing company Notes Publishers in November. “This book is written for the countless children who don’t understand what is going on in our country but understand that we are a better country when we are kind to each other and stick together. It is for all the children who lost a loved one but somehow find a way to keep their memory alive.” After publishing her second book, Darko said she is also working on a poetry anthology. “This literary work will focus on the inner-city students that I work with among other things. I want the children of our world to know how important their words can be,” Darko said. “How empowering it can be to tell their own stories in their own way. I am also working on a book titled ‘Where is Nicky?’ for children that do not come from conventional families. God loves us all even when we are not like anyone else.” For more information about “Sticks In a Bundle,” visit www.notespublishers.com. Contact Vashti Harris at vharris@newspapermediagroup.com. Exercise is for everybody

E

xercise is for everybody – including you. We all know that exercise is important for good overall health and wellness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and countless other resources have cited the importance of physical activity in reducing and preventing chronic disease. Now, perhaps more than ever, the pandemic has taught us that we don’t need expensive gym memberships, or the inconvenience of going there, to find creative ways to exercise and be healthier from the

comfort of our own home or by simply going outside. Many fitness companies have been at the forefront of creating attractive products designed for the consumer of more convenient, social, fun and interactive ways to exercise at home. The caveat is, they can also be expensive and as much as they would like you to believe that their product, service or app is appropriate for you, because that’s good for business, it may not be. So how do you know where and how to start? Perhaps most importantly, how do you know if you are healthy enough to

start exercising? To answer these questions, let’s tackle what in my experience has been the most common barriers to proper exercise habits. Time is our most precious resource and most of us are spread pretty thin in this area. The CDC recommends that we perform approximately 20 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per day or a total of 150 minutes in a week. Some people may find that 20 minutes is a reasonable and realistic investment of time for improved health. For some though, finding 20 minutes can be daunting. I think it’s important to keep in mind that you can also do two sessions of 10 minutes in a day or perhaps only exercise three days a week and have longer sessions. My point is, there can be a lot of flexibility and there are many ways that you can accomplish this goal. Be creative and even if you fall out of your routine, don’t overthink it and just get back on the horse.

What if you don’t like to exercise? Well, you’re not alone. Many people share that same sentiment. What’s important is that you get your heart rate up and move – that’s all you need. Start by thinking about something you like to do. Do you like to listen to music? Great! Make a new playlist and go for a moderate paced walk while you listen. Or you may like to dance? Sounds good! Just put on some good music, and make sure you dance for at least 10 minutes at a moderate intensity. What if you want to exercise but you don’t know how? There are many online resources that can teach you some basic movements and modes of exercise. What’s important is that you choose the right one for you. There are many considerations when selecting the mode or type of exercise. For example, if you are an untrained individual and will be exercising for the first time you’ll want to choose carefully so as to not develop bad habits, improper movement patterns, or potentially predispose yourself to injury. Your doctor of physical therapy can also help introduce and teach you some basic exercises to get you started on the right path. How do you know if you are healthy enough to exercise? Consulting with a doctor of physical therapy can help you determine if you are healthy enough for exercise, what exercises to perform, how to perform them properly, and how to progress them once you are ready. The short answer is that most people are healthy enough to participate in some form of exercise so long as they choose the right parameters, i.e. frequency, duration, intensity, form. Figuring that out on your own can be tricky. We recommend that you see your doctor of physical therapy for 4-6 sessions to get you on the right track and perhaps once every two weeks thereafter. Keys to success: Proper sleeping habits, hydration, stretching, and nutrition are critical but if you haven’t exercised before, it’s best to avoid making too many dramatic changes at once. You’ll be more successful implementing positive lifestyle changes by doing so gradually and reasonably. Setting small, attainable goals will help keep you motivated and on a successful path of health and wellness. Dr. Leonard J. Somarriba is a co-CEO of ProFysio Physical Therapy located in Monmouth and Middlesex counties. To learn more, visit ProFysioNJ.com.

What’s New at Atlantic Medical Eye Care? It’s been a while since our articles have appeared in this paper, so we wanted to take this opportunity to let you know about some changes at our ophthalmology practice. We care deeply for our patients and the community in general, therefore we have instituted some policies designed to keep everyone safe and well. Dr. Scharfman and the entire staff undergo a screening each day including temperature checks. Everyone wears a mask and additional personal protection equipment (PPE). Each treatment room is thoroughly disinfected between each patient. Air filtration units with UV and Ozone disinfection have been installed as well as Plexiglas breath barriers on all the equipment and check-in and check-out stations. We are also screening patients as they enter the office and limiting the number of patients in the office at any given time. Contactless payment options are now available. Finally, when you call the office to make your appointment, our staff will carefully explain our new check-in procedures. Our aim is to provide the best eye care and keep you safe and well at the same time. We heard from many of our patients that their schedules have changed due to COVID, children having virtual instruction, and other responsibilities. Therefore, we added a new staff member to our team, Dr. Margi Shah, Doctor of Optometry. Dr. Shah comes to Atlantic Medical Eye Care from the prestigious Pennsylvania College of Optometry where she graduated magna cum laude honors. Dr. Shah has allowed us to add evening hours each Tuesday. Stay tuned because she will soon be starting to see patients a few Saturdays each month for our patients’ convenience. Dr. Shah takes pride in her heritage and can speak Gujarati fluently. Dr. Robert Scharfman is committed to excellence in patient care and compassion. He has served the community for over 25 years.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE NERVE DAMAGE?

Peripheral neuropathy is the consequence of damage to your peripheral nerves. There are over 100 different kinds of peripheral nerve disorders or neuropathies - some are the result of a disease like diabetes, while others can be triggered by a viral infection. Still others are the result of an injury or compression on the nerves. No matter where the problems begin, it is imperative nerve disorders are resolved as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage. Many people suffer with pain for years, not realizing that their symptoms may be due to Peripheral Neuropathy. Symptoms start gradually, then get worse including numbness, burning, or tingling sensations and sharp, electrical-like pain. Treatment options have been limited to a small assortment of pain medications, which can lead to further issues. Ignoring the problem or masking the symptoms has never been a viable solution. If you suffer from any of the aforementioned symptoms, we can help.

Barnes (Continued from page 1)

from Widener University School of Law. He served for seven years in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2007-13 before serving as a New Jersey state senator for three years. While a senator, he served as vice chairman of the Law and Public Safety Committee, a member of the Budget and Appropriations Committee and the State Government, Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation committee. In the Senate, Barnes sponsored significant bills, including the 2% budget cap for property tax relief; and the requirement of school districts, nonpublic schools and institutions of higher education to report allegations of sexual assault to law enforcement and institutions of higher education to post information on sexual assaults on their website and provide the information to prospective students. He had also pushed legislation to establish a pilot program in Edison Township requiring the Attorney General to perform police internal affairs functions. “Pete Barnes was truly a special person,” said state Sen. Patrick Diegnan Jr. (D-18), who succeeded Barnes’ Senate seat when he became a Superior Court judge. “His accomplishments speak for themselves: renowned attorney, Edison council president, member of the New Jersey Assembly, state senator, Superior Court judge. However, those achievements don’t define who Pete was. He was a caring and loving human being. In every position he held he worked to help others. Above all else Pete’s priority was his family and friends. The world is a better place because of Pete Barnes. He is surely smiling down from heaven.” Craig Coughlin, speaker of the New Jersey Assembly (D-19), issued a statement on the passing of Barnes on Feb. 23. “We mourn the loss of Judge Barnes today,” he said. “It was an honor to know and serve with him in the Legislature. He was a dedicated public servant whose love for New Jersey and its residents helped lead to important reforms throughout the state.” Further, Coughlin said “throughout his career and in the numerous positions Peter served within the state, he impacted many. “His influence was vast and his contributions to New Jersey and its communities will be lasting,” he said. “My heart goes

out to his wife Katie and his children.” Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan said he has known the Barnes family since he was in high school. He attended J.P. Stevens with Barnes’ sisters and was a good friend of Barnes’ father Peter J. Barnes Jr., who passed away in 2018. “I worked with Peter Barnes when he was an Edison council member many years ago while I was the [Edison Police Department’s] union president,” he said. “I continued to maintain a friendship with Peter throughout our careers and commonly joined him at many township functions. Pete will be missed very much by our great community and the positive influence he had on so many people. He has made so many contributions to the residents of Edison Township throughout the years.” Mahesh Bhagia, chairman of the EDO, released a statement through social media on Feb. 23. He called Barnes “a true public servant” who made “a profound impact on Edison, Middlesex County and the state.” “A fierce advocate for increasing the minimum wage, reducing sexual assault on college campuses, and recovery housing for those suffering from substance abuse; Judge Barnes was a state senator for the people of our community,” he said. Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker (D-16) said, “Judge Barnes was a dedicated public servant with a unique ability to work with anyone in order to serve New Jersey and the residents of the 18th District. Barbara and I extend my sincere condolences to his wife Katie, mother Barbara, his children, and the entire Barnes family during their time of mourning.” Former Edison Councilwoman Joan Kapitan, who now lives in Florida, served on the council with Barnes. “We have lost a pillar of our community, he will be sadly missed,” she said. Former Mayor Antonia Ricigliano said “it was a privilege to have worked with a young man who was dedicated to the concept of public service.” “Peter Barnes began his career as a pro bono attorney for the Edison Democratic Organization and worked his way up the proverbial ladder, culminating as a State Superior Court judge,” she said. “Peter will be missed by family, friends and those whose lives he touched in both common and profound ways throughout his lifetime.”

The Lost Souls Memorial Project (LSP) is releasing the official Request for Design Proposals (RFP), seeking design teams to submit their ideas about what the future Lost Souls memorial will be in East Brunswick. The LSP seeks to create a permanent memorial to 137 African Americans who, in 1818, were stolen from New Jersey and transported to the Deep South to be sold into permanent slavery. Jacob Van Wickle, a corrupt Middlesex County judge, organized an extensive ring that included members of his family as well as highly placed members of the New Jersey elite. The state was phasing out slavery at the time, and under the state’s gradual emancipation laws no slave could be sent out of state

C

without having given formal legal consent. ( The judge and his ring used deception, fakery and outright kidnapping of both free and enslaved people, who were held under guard in his home in what is now East B Brunswick, New Jersey. They were sent on Z ships from Perth Amboy to Louisiana and s Mississippi, many ending on the plantation B owned by Van Wickle’s brother-in-law. b Had they remained in New Jersey, they i would in time have become free according i to the state’s laws. Outrage when the ring was discovered w led to a few indictments, but Van Wickle n was never brought to account, and the af- fi t fair was forgotten. The purpose of the Lost Souls Public c Memorial is to ensure that these children, S women and men are never again forgotten, B and this horrific event be brought to light. w The New Brunswick NAACP, the New o Jersey Chapter ‚Äãof the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society, and c The Unitarian Society, as well as other p community groups and individuals, are l working to bring this project to life. To access the RFP, visit lostsoulsme- T O morialnj.org. w The deadline for the 2021 Richard i K. Meyers Memorial South River History h High School Essay Contest is April 15. The contest is open to all graduating high school seniors who are residents of South River and who are planning to continue their education. To apply for the award, submit a typed essay of no less than 1,000 words (approximately two pages, single spaced in 12-point font) describing something that took place in South River in your lifetime. An event need only be of significance to you; it need not have been a major event in South River’s history. Essays are judged by members of the South River Historical & Preservation Society and will be added to the permanent collections at the South River Museum – Old School Baptist Church. Judging is based solely on the quality of the essays, and all awards will be at the discretion of the judges. Sponsored by the South River Historical & Preservation Society, award amounts will be $500 first place, $350 second place, and $150 for third place. Submissions must be sent via email and include full name, address, phone number, email address, school name, expected date of graduation, date of submission and future education plans (e.x. college name). Email the electronic version to southriverhistory@gmail.com Or, mail a paper version to South River History Essay Contest, South River Historical & Preservation Society, Inc., P.O. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Never Known to Fail)

O most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, immaculate virgin, assist me in my necessity. O star of the sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. O Holy Mother of God, Queen of heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity. (Make your request.) There are none who can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (Repeat 3 times) O Mary, I place this cause in your hands (Repeat 3 times) Say this prayer for three consecutive days with a fervent heart and share it with others.

R.G.

Prayer to St. Jude Most holy Apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus the name of the traitor who delivered the beloved Master into the hands of His enemies, has caused you to be forgotten by many but the Church honors and prays to you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things despaired of. Pray for me who am so miserable; make use I implore you of that particular privilege accorded to you to bring visible and speedy help, where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolations and help of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings particularly (here make your request) and that I may bless God with you and all the elect forever. I PROMISE you, blessed St. Jude to be ever mindful of this great favor and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen. May the most just, most high and most adorable Will of God be in all things done, praised and magnified, forever and ever. Amen.

Miraculous Invocation to St. Therese O Glorious St. Therese, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and inspire the human family, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. You are so powerful in obtaining every need of body and spirit from the Heart of God. Holy Mother Church proclaims you “Prodigy of Miracles... the Greatest Saint of Modern Times.” Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention here) and to carry out your promises of spending Heaven doing good upon earth... Of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses. Little Flower, give me your childlike faith, to see the Face of God in the people and experiences of my life, and to love God with full confidence. St. Therese, my Carmelite Sister, I will fulfill your plea “to be made known everywhere” and I will continue to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen.

R.G.

St. Anthony Novena O holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle. Even so, you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. R.G.

St. Therese Novena O little Therese of the Child Jesus, please pick for me a rose from the heavenly gardens and send it to me as a message of love. O little Flower of Jesus, ask God today to grant the favors I now place with confidence in your hands.. (mention specific requests) St. Therese, help me to always believe as you did, in God’s great love for me, so that I might imitate your “Little Way” each day. Amen.

R.G.
