Critical amphibian habitats and vernal pools along the East Brunswick-South Brunswick border were protected when a 76-acre parcel of open space along the Ireland Brook-Tamarack Hollow Extension was purchased by Middlesex County from Freedom Run, LLC, in 2017. For more on the importance of amphibians to the area, see page 12.

uperintendent of Schools Victor Valeski announced that families who have selected the option can return to a five-day-a-week in-person learning schedule beginning April 19. “Based on a strong assumption that the CDC will relax distancing recommendations in school settings before April 19, I am planning to return pre-K-12 students, for those families who select it, to school five days a week for single session days beginning April 19, which is the first day of the fourth marking period,” Valeski said in a prepared statement. Valeski said the impact of spring break travel, COVID infection and close contact quarantines, along with final classroom distancing recommendations and requirements, may impact the school district’s forecasted implementation date but be assured that returning students to school five days a week remains one of his top priorities if the district can accomplish it safely. eeking to find out how many students and parents would prefer in-person learning, the South River School District distributed a survey to the community. “I’d like to begin my report … by following up on the results of the survey

that we just put out to the community. We recently asked our families to please inform us if they were looking for a return to school for the fourth marking period in person for a four-day week, or if they were looking to remain virtual for the remainder of the school year,” Superintendent Sylvia Zircher said as she updated the community during the March 22 school board meeting.

By the time the school district closed the survey that was open for about one week, Zircher said it received 1,610 responses and each student got to respond for themselves. The district has about 2,250 enrolled students. Using presentation slides, Zircher delivered her report updating board members about the district’s survey results,

scheduling plans, and vaccination numbers amongst district facility and staff. Displaying a chart showing each grade level and percentages, Zircher said the highest percentage of requests for in-person instruction is occurring at the pre-K level.

Middlesex College unveils rebranding effort By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

I

n efforts to spread the word of what all Middlesex College has to offer and help dispel the stigma of attending a community college, the college, in partnership with Middlesex County, officially unveiled its rebranding effort on March 23. Middlesex College, formerly Middlesex County College, announced its name change and move to rebrand earlier this year. The college’s Board of Trustees approved the name change in October 2020, which took effect Jan. 1. College President Mark McCormick, who said the process began in February 2020 right before the novel coronavirus pandemic, appeared with Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios; Deputy Director Commissioner Kenneth Armwood; Dorothy K. Power, chairwoman of the Middlesex College Board of Trustees; and Kyle Anderson, a Middlesex College trustee and Middlesex County interim executive superintendent, in a Zoom press conference expounding on the college’s plans to further implement branding changes across campus and throughout the college’s identity on March 23. “Middlesex College offers high quality education that serves county residents and customize training and workforce development to area businesses,” McCormick said. “Our students transfer to every college/university in New Jersey including

Rutgers, Kean, New Jersey Institute of Technology, College of New Jersey and Princeton. Our transfer partners report that Middlesex College graduates perform better than students who started the four-year institution in terms of grade point average and time for completion of a bachelor’s degree.” However, McCormick said despite “amazing outcomes of our students, there are many in our community that remain unaware of what Middlesex College has to offer.” “Even though our name has changed, our mission has not,” McCormick said. “Our mission remains to offer quality, affordable education for residents of Middlesex College and help our students thrive in education, growth and personal success. For many students Middlesex College is the best choice in terms of affordability, transferability of credits, flexible scheduling, proximity, personalized attention and quality.” Rios said in many ways Middlesex College’s new brand is an extension of the county’s own brand journey that began several years ago. “We both seek to attract new talent and opportunities to Middlesex County; in fact the county’s strategic plan and master economic roadmap known as Destination 2040 makes it clear that the success of Middlesex County and Middlesex College are intertwined in Destination 2040,” he said. Rios said the county’s financial investments with a collaboration project with

Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health, New Brunswick Development Corporation and New Brunswick of a freestanding comprehensive cancer pavilion will provide Middlesex College extraordinary opportunities including a pathway for oncology education. County officials announced the project in May 2020. “This will provide Middlesex College students exclusive access to educational curricula and content from a premier oncology center,” Rios said. “As we’ve seen here today the new Middlesex College rebrand identity perfectly reflects the college’s onward unwavering dedication to its mission and every element from a new name to the new logo and even the new mascot reinforces the message that Middlesex College is a worthy first choice for perspective students just as Middlesex College is a top destination for residents and businesses. Middlesex College is one of the many reasons Middlesex County is an excellent place to live work and play.” Armwood said they recognize Middlesex College as a key pipeline for the talent that will fuel local businesses and help the county achieve its strategic long-term economic development goals. “We know that many of today’s Middlesex College students will become the entrepreneurs, CEOs, essential workers and life-science experts of the businesses that will call Middlesex County home in the future,” he said. Power said the county’s flag motto – leading together – and the campus col-

lege’s motto – explore, grow, drive – are compatible. “Middlesex College has been an engine of growth,” she said. “We have almost 60,000 alumni and countless more have been taking non-credit classes for who have been trained in our workforce development program.” Anderson said going to college is not just about hard work in the classroom. “Middlesex College offers numerous extracurricular activities as well as [giving students] a chance to have fun, learn leadership skills, and participate in clubs and athletics,” he said. “As a former athlete, football coach and Middlesex College student, I can tell you that the new brand is extremely important in creating school spirit and a sense of pride and camaraderie that propels student life and the athletic brand forward.” Anderson said the college’s new athletics logo embodies the strength and pride of the Middlesex College Colts. “In addition to our logo, within a year we will be unveiling our new physical mascot,” he said. “Our colt will be named by online polls of Middlesex College students. [The mascot] will attend athletic events as well as select campus and community activities [and] will be be an integral part of our new rebrand.” The Middlesex College will be hosting a virtual open house from 10 a.m to 1:30 p.m. on April 18. For more information, visit middlesexcc.edu

“Even though our name has changed, our mission has not. Our mission remains to offer quality, affordable education for residents of Middlesex College and help our students thrive in education, growth and personal success.”

Teacher remembered for creating a platform for students, staff By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor

T

he South Brunswick and South River communities are mourning the loss of one of its teachers. Sean Padraic Cannon passed away on March 18 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick after a brief illness. He was 52. After graduating South River High School, Cannon attended Rutgers University and was a member of the Scarlet

Knights Marching Band and Mu Upsilon Alpha, the band fraternity, according to his obituary from Carmen F. Spezzi & Maliszewski Funeral Homes. He continued his education, obtaining his Master’s in Education, also from Rutgers University. Cannon spent most of his 25-year teaching career as a history teacher at South Brunswick High School (SBHS). He shared his love of history to classes of freshmen learning about civics, juniors and seniors taking AP History and AP Govern-

ment classes, and fellow teachers through impromptu rounds of trivia at lunchtime, according to the obituary. “I am just so heartbroken. I really can’t find the right words to express how much this hurts. Cannon was my first government and politics teacher and one of my biggest cheerleaders in the pursuit of my legal career. His class left a huge impact on me. Twelve years later, I still have the textbook sitting on my bookshelf,” one former student wrote on the funeral home’s website. “Mr. Cannon was one of my favorite teachers at SBHS. I always looked forward to his classes. He always made learning fun and memorable. I will miss his kindness and his great sense of humor. When I was inducted into National Honor Society, Mr. Cannon gave me a book ‘The Essential Writings of Machiavelli’. This book means a lot to me and always has a place on my bookshelf. Whenever I skim the bookshelf and see the book, I think of Mr. Cannon. He truly had an enormous impact on his students and will be sorely missed,” another student wrote. “Mr. Cannon was such an icon of SBHS. Anyone in my twenties that I meet who was raised in South Brunswick always asks, “But did you have Mr. Cannon??” I’ll never forget the way he explained war

tactics or just told us hilarious anecdotes of daily life. Other teachers were always focused on grades and performance, but Mr. Cannon was only focused on intellectual development and learning. He brought quiet self-conscious kids out of their shells, humbled the loud prideful ones, and created a platform where students and teachers were on the same playing field without having a superiority complex. I still cherish my class memories with him today. The world lost a spectacular, humorous genius today,” another student wrote. An amateur chef, Cannon would offer cooking lessons to whomever needed and would share his creations at staff potlucks and after school events, according to the obituary. Superintendent of Schools Scott Feder offered a comment to the Sentinel, saying, “We were very saddened to learn of the passing of this beloved member of our faculty. Sean was a member of our high school staff for over 20 years and he made such a lasting impression on every life that he touched. He was so loved by his students and staff alike. He taught with such a passion that students so desired to be in his classes every year. He will be so missed by everyone and he leaves us with heavy hearts.”

We will evaluate our transition two weeks into the fourth marking period to measure continued district health and safety,” Valeski said in the statement. “Any additional step in this process is dependent on social distancing recommendations and required safeguards at that time.” It is important to understand, Valeski said, that students in five days a week for in-person instruction could be required to shift to virtual learning during periods of state-mandated standardized testing or mandatory quarantines. South River (Continued from page 1)

“We have the most amount of requests at the pre-K and the South River Primary School building,” Zircher said. “Second, the elementary school, followed by the middle school and then followed by the high school … [shows] that about 55% or less students are looking to return in-person at the high school.” Zircher said the district had been opening the high school to any student who has received any failing grades or who has been struggling to meet coursework. The district has been inviting students personally to come back for in-person instruction and many students have taken the district up on that offer.

After returning back from spring break on April 12, Zircher said the district will remain in its current cohort schedule for the week of April 12, and then on April 19 it will go back to a four-day week of inperson learning. “The task force met [on March 22] before this board meeting. We discussed the return to school for a five-day week and what that could potentially look like,” Zircher said. “Maybe beginning in May, that was the recommendation of the task force that if we consider that, we transition into that five-day-a-week timeline. Looking at May and June, and finishing off the year that way. If all conditions remain the same of course.” Zircher said she is happy to report that 52 of the district’s teachers and staff members have already received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. They are due to receive

their second dose in April during the district’s spring break. “We have another group of teachers who are going to be vaccinated right at our high school on March 23,” Zircher said. “Another group being vaccinated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Robert Wood Johnson set up their program a little bit differently and they sent out a link directly to those individuals to schedule their own test, as it meets their schedule.” At this point, Zircher said all of the staff have been offered an opportunity, all of the district’s teachers and staff. “We’ve been able to offer vaccination opportunities to surrounding districts.

Therefore, [we are] really just supporting our neighboring communities and helping those educators become vaccinated as well. So [on March 23] vaccination day we will have teachers from surrounding districts joining our teachers and staff as well,” Zircher said. “Also on [March 23], we will be running an antibodies clinic that will be conducted by our current lab who has been doing our COVID testing for the school year, and that test is really for individuals who want to know what types of antibodies they do contain against COVID-19.” For more information, visit www.srivernj.org and click on the COVID-19 Information tab.

OBITUARY Lydia Krug Lydia Krug, 86, died on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family. Born and raised in the ‘Russian Alley’ of South River, she lived most of her life there, before moving to Columbus, NJ, in 2018. Lydia is the daughter of the late Jacob and Anna Kananovich. Her dearly loved husband of 54 years, George, predeceased her in 2009. She was predeceased also by her adored son, Brent, who died in 1991. Lydia leaves behind two daughters and their families: Dawn Adams, her husband, Matt, and children, Lyndsay and Kayla of Columbus, NJ; and Debbie Stahl, her husband, Brian, and children, Heather (Jonathan), Bethany (Jordan), and Brianna (Jonathan) of Alabama. Lydia and her husband worked tirelessly to sacrificially provide for their children as they grew into adulthood. She left a legacy of loyalty and sincere commitment to the people and things she held dear. She retired from Wonder Bread factory in East Brunswick in 1992 and enjoyed being a stay-at-home grandma during her retirement. Lydia was a strong and feisty woman. Her strength and perseverance were evident as she lived well with the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s disease for nearly 20 years. In her later years she loved to read, recording each book she read and celebrating as she reached milestones of reading 100, then 200, then 300 books. She loved her many doggie companions especially Butchie, Poopsie, and Lola. Friends were invited to attend a grave-side ceremony on Wednesday, March 24, at 2:00 pm at the Washington Monumental Cemetery on Hillside Avenue, South River. A visitation took place afterwards from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm. This included a time of prayer and remembrance at 5:00 pm. Gifts may be directed to the family or in lieu of gifts, donations may be made in her honor to Timothy Christian Academy 1341 Woodlane Rd, Eastampton, NJ 08060. guard” at key locations in Warren and Sussex counties, slowing or stopping traffic to make sure the critters don’t get run over. Last year, the amphibian migration was already underway when COVID-19 forced the Conserve Wildlife Foundation to cut back its amphibian crossing program. This year, Wheeler said, the program will continue, but with a reduced number of volunteers who will wear masks and keep a safe distance apart. The exact date the amphibians start moving is unpredictable: It can be as early as February if the winter is mild, or as late as April if the ground is still partly frozen or covered with snow. A rainy or misty night with temperatures in the mid-40s or

above is ideal. Darkness and rain help the amphibians move without being detected by predators like owls and raccoons. At the peak, hundreds or even thousands of amphibians will move simultaneously toward the same pool. The full migration usually takes place over the course of three to six nights – not necessarily consecutive – with perfect weather conditions. Amphibians breed in vernal pools, also known as intermittent or ephemeral ponds, to achieve the best survival odds for their eggs and tadpoles. Vernal pools dry up each summer, so they don’t support fish that would otherwise eat up all the eggs and larvae.

The word “vernal” means “of, in, or appropriate to spring.” Vernal pools get their water from snowmelt, rain and rising groundwater, so they’re at their fullest in spring. New Jersey has an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 vernal pools, and most should have plenty of water this spring because of February’s record-breaking snows. Want to see this amazing natural spectacle? The best place to go is Beekman Road in East Brunswick, which is closed to traffic on peak amphibian migration nights. The East Brunswick Environmental Commission encourages members of the public to come out to watch and take photos as salamanders and frogs cross the road to get to their vernal pools. For more information and directions, go to www.friendsebec. com/salamander-migration-updates. If you can’t make it to an amphibian migration, try listening for the amazing sounds of a frog chorus in wetlands near you. What might you hear? One of the earliest frogs to sing is the Northern spring peeper. This tiny woodland frog is known for the males’ mating call—a high-pitched whistling or peeping sound repeated rapidly. The faster and louder male peepers sing, the better their chances of finding a mate. Peepers congregate near water and often sing in trios, with the deepest-voiced frog starting the call. “To me, the peepers are like the official start of spring,” Wheeler said. A female peeper heeding the male’s call will lay 750 to 1,200 eggs, which are fertilized as they are laid. Eggs hatch within two days to two weeks, depending on temperature, and the tadpoles transform into frogs over six to 12 weeks. Wood frogs also begin breeding in early spring and can be found in the same vernal pools as peepers. Male wood frogs sound like ducks with their quack-like calls day and night to attract mates. Females lay masses of 1,000 to 3,000 eggs, which are fertilized by the males and will hatch between nine and 30 days later.

For decades, experts thought New Jersey had only 15 native frog and toad species. Then, in 2011, the green treefrog – a species whose range is currently expanding in the U.S. – was added to the list. The next year brought even bigger news – the discovery of an entirely “new” species, the Atlantic Coast leopard frog. The Atlantic Coast leopard frog had likely been living in the wetlands and ponds of New Jersey, New York and other states for thousands of years. Since the 1930s, it was suspected to be distinct from other leopard frog species. But it wasn’t until the advent of modern DNA analysis that science proved it’s a unique species. The full New Jersey range of Atlantic Coast leopard frogs isn’t yet known, but the Conserve Wildlife Foundation is working to find out. For the last few years, they have surveyed various wetland locations for Atlantic Coast leopard frogs. “We have a number of locations highlighted for this year that haven’t been surveyed yet,” Wheeler said. “It’s exciting.” Don’t miss the opportunity to explore and enjoy this spring’s amphibian migration! And urge your local elected officials to protect vernal pools. New Jerseyans might be surprised to learn that our state’s vernal pools have little protection and can often be filled, except in certain parts of the Highlands and Pinelands. Two decades ago, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection tried to adopt rules to protect vernal ponds statewide but was rebuffed by litigation from the NJ Builders Association. To learn more about the Conserve Wildlife Foundation’s amphibian crossing program, go to www.conservewildlifenj.org/ protecting/projects/amphibian_crossing/. To see a list of New Jersey’s amphibian species – and listen to recorded frog and toad calls – go to www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/ ensp/fieldguide_herps.htm.

I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly.
