Testing available for symptom-free healthcare workers
M
yInstaDoc Urgent Care has been offering COVID-19 PCR testing by nasal swab for more than a month and served more than 1,800 people. The physicians at MyInstaDoc Monroe announced the availability of igG Antibody Testing in addition to COVID-19 Swab Testing at the facility, located at 298 Applegarth Road, Monroe. The antibody
testing using a reliable lab will show if a person has developed antibodies for COVID-19. igG Antibody Blood Testing will be conducted in office by appointment. Call 609-207-3220 for an appointment. Currently, this test is being offered to health care workers, first responders and public servants who are symptom-free. To be
considered for this testing a patient must be free from all COVID-19 symptoms for a period of no less than 14 days. This service is being offered to symptom-free family members of those who were infected with COVID-19 and who have completed their period of quarantine. This test will assess them for subclinical infection in the past.
howcasing stories of volunteerism throughout the township, the East Brunswick Human Relations Council (EBHRC) held a “Unity in the Community” event via Facebook Live. As part of the EBHRC’s Coffee and Conversation series, four panelists shared their stories on April 14 about how they are helping the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Panelists included Aldersgate Outreach Community Center Executive Director Diane Hutchins, Brunswick Memorial Home co-owner Michael Kulbacki, EBHRC member Frank Shen and Islamic Center of East Brunswick member Mohammed Hashmi. Handing the virtual microphone over to Hutchins, EBHRC member Hollie Cerame said even before the COVID-19 crisis, the community center’s food pantry was one of the few pantries that served the community on a weekly basis. “Unlike most other pantries now they had to completely adapt how it serves the community in order to remain open,” Cerame said. In light of the ongoing crisis, Hutchins said the center closed its thrift shop and clothing area but wanted to keep the pantry open. “Some of our board members got together. The overall consensus was that we need to continue to meet the food needs of East Brunswick and the surrounding comunities. So how did we do it?” Hutchins said. “Staffing, of course, was our first concern. We are an all-volunteer ministry of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, but our volunteers are from not only Aldersgate, but a number of other churches, and then from the community at large.” Hutchins said the center decided to have two sets of volunteers. One would be its frontline volunteers who would be

Local Girl Scouts spread smiles, appreciation through Quarantine Kindness Bingo game
T
he members of Girl Scout Troop 83824 want to spread smiles, not germs, in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. And with that, troop members have been meeting virtually on a weekly basis and created a Quarantine Kindness Bingo game, which they opened up for anyone who wants to participate. The troop, led by Heather Corona and Tiffany DelValle, includes 12 sixth graders Marisa Ortiz, Skylar Snyder, Olivia DelValle, Christina Pedulla, Josephina Corona, Brooke Craparotta, Kayden Cipolla, Emily Cugini, Avika Sancheti, Sumer Snyder, Eveilette Arellano and Julia Artz. Eleven girls attend Monroe Township Middle School and one girl from Spotswood attends Immaculate Conception School. Many members are seventh-year Girl Scouts. “We don’t just help out in good times, we also help out during hard and difficult times,” Josephina Corona said during a virtual interview with the Sentinel on April 22. They came up with 25 acts of kindness to create the game that can be accessed online. Olivia DelValle said the project gives them a way to connect with the community and show their appreciation for healthcare workers. The bingo board spaces include simple fun tasks that maintain social distancing, from making a card or treat for a first responder or healthcare worker, sending flower seeds to someone in the mail to plant, chalking a happy picture on a neighbor’s driveway, emailing a thank you to a teacher, making ice cream in a bag, trying a new cooking recipe, helping a friend with an online assignment, and painting a rock with a kind message on it. Troop member Brooke Craparotta kickstarted the bingo board with sending thank you cards to frontline heroes at Princeton House Behavioral Health in Princeton. Many of the girls are well on their way to finishing the board game. Josephina said she chalked the walk with a picture of a rainbow and has donated 40 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick. Julia Artz, whose mom Teresa is director of the Magnet Program and Nursing Quality at Saint Peter’s, shared she sent a letter to her grandmother
with a keychain and bracelet in Kentucky. She has See the video recruited her grandmother and cousins to participate. www.centraljersey.com Julia said their donations and cards are a way to give back to the frontline heroes who have risked their lives during the pandemic. She noted some have been away from their families. The troop is asking for a $5 donation per participant so they may provide the Girl Scout Acts of Kindness patch to everyone who

actually interacting with the clients. Its secondary volunteers do the work like packing bags, picking up food from Shoprite or Stop and Shop, and/or making food. The secondary volunteer group does not have any direct interrelationships with the clients on the days the pantry is open, Hutchins said. Taking certain health risks by interacting with locals all over the county, Hutchins said the center asks its volunteers to be safe and stay healthy. “We do take lots of precautions. We have masks, we have gloves, we disinfect our work areas and we try to make sure that everything is clean. We have a very small pantry. It’s very cramped,” Hutchins said. “So one of our first objectives was, this is not going to work, because we would just be on top of each other and that would be dangerous for the clients and for us. So we decided that we would move outside and so we have erected a couple of canopies. We have put all of the food items that we don’t put in the bags.” Hutchins said the pantry is open every week on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at 562 Ryders Lane. “We have, I guess you want to call, a sneeze guard that we’ve put in place where

clients check in,” Hutchins said. “Then they can select certain choice items, but from a distance, and our volunteers put them in a bag and then they put the bag on a separate bench that the folks can then pick the bags up to be able to take them in to leave. So that’s been working very well.” Having partnered with Hall’s Corner Senior Housing, Hutchins said the pantry is going to continue the monthly distribution; however, volunteers will rarely have contact with the residents, but the pantry will be able to continue to provide food to them. Hutchins said they were expecting to provide food to approximately 90 residents as of April 20. “Another question is what can you do for us? You can simply pray that our volunteers and our clients that we serve remain healthy and that we can continue to provide the services that we do provide. You can make food or monetary donations,” Hutchins said. Kulbacki said at this time, the funeral home has set up a group of volunteers who are willing to go shopping and do errands for the people who are at risk. “Yeah, as you can imagine, it’s an interesting time for us at the funeral home, trying to provide some semblance of normalcy, especially to families that haven’t

been able to see their loved ones in several weeks,” Kulbacki said. “You know, with hospitals being on lockdown, nursing homes being on lockdown, who never got a chance to say goodbye, we’re trying to provide that opportunity.” When lunchtime rolls around, Kulbacki said he and his staff make a point to order food from the local restaurants in town to show their support. One of the biggest things that his company has done, Kulbacki said, is it has put together a volunteer matching program. “We created a website that has been posted to Facebook where people are able to sign up within the township that are able to offer services, whether it’s a ride to the grocery store, whether it’s going to pick up groceries or going to the drugstore,” Kulbacki said. “As this drags on where people don’t have access to the normal facilities … or for those that just don’t feel comfortable going outside because they’re high risk, they’re able to go in there and sit and say exactly what they need.” At the same time, Kulbacki said other members of the community are able to go the website and volunteer to help, whether they’re able to offer a ride or pick up groceries, and they’ve had people who are

spiritual advisors who are willing to pick up the phone and chat with people who need it. “One of the really nice things is we have about 40 to 50 responses so far people all around town,” Kulbacki said. “So as people have filled out the form and requested help, in most cases we’ve been able to pair them with somebody that may only live two or three blocks away.” After learning about COVID-19’s impact on local medical facilities and residents, East Brunswick Chinese American community member Frank Shen said in mid-March several residents from the Chinese American community started a fundraiser to raise money to buy medical supplies for medical professionals and gift cards to help those in need of groceries. “We had the same vision, basically strongly believe the East Brunswick Chinese American community, how to contribute as much as we can and we had the very first conference call on the night of March 16. After that, we quickly established a separate PayPal account and posted our petition in several chat groups and asked the Chinese community to stand up and help our own town, East Brunswick.” From March 17 to April 14, Shen said the group was able to raise $18,755, which was used to purchase gift cards and medical masks that include: 16,000 surgical

ciatica pain can strike out of nowhere: a shooting, radiating sensation traveling down the length of your leg. The pain may worsen when you sit for extended periods. Suddenly, you’re experiencing weakness, numbness or difficulty moving your leg or foot. There’s a constant pain on one side of your buttocks. A shooting pain or “pins and needles” sensation can make it difficult to stand up after sitting in a chair. You’re embarrassed, frustrated and just plain sick of this pain. Sound familiar? Sciatica pain does not have to stop you from living a full, active life. First, it’s important to understand this frustrating

truth about sciatica: this pain won’t simply “get better” with time or “go away” on its own. This is why relying on medication is shortsighted and ineffective. Medication numbs the brain’s ability to perceive pain. This means that once medication wears off, sciatica pain will return. This can lead to an unhealthy cycle of medication reliance and dependency without ever addressing the root health problem. It can also delay proper care and can make recovery more involved. How Chiropractic Care May Help With 40 years of clinical experience helping sciatica patients, I believe there is a better, more effective way to address sciatica pain. Here’s how my chiropractic practice can make a positive improvement in your sciatica pain and quality of life: 1. Address the real problem. The body functions best when the energy that travels over the nervous system is free from interference. Sciatica pain is a symptom of nervous system interference. Chiropractic care is designed to address and alleviate this interference for longlasting pain relief. 2. Sciatica relief without drugs. Our conservative approach to sciatica relief is without medication or risky, invasive surgery. Eighty-five percent of my patients feel improvement after the first treatment. If your sciatica pain is coming from a medical cause, I will promptly refer you to the appropriate provider. 3. Support whole body health. Injuries and pain do not happen in a vacuum. What happens in one part of your body impacts what happens in another, and vice-versa. Pain in one part of your body may be symptomatic of more serious problems impacting your health. I follow a whole body approach to sciatica relief that is designed to support all aspects of your body’s health. What would you do without sciatica pain? Take back control of your life today. Our office is open. We are following the highest standards of sanitation for the safety of all concerned, and we are happy to offer you single/alone appointments if you prefer. We also offer telehealth. Call 732-254-6011 to schedule an in-person or teleHealth appointment. Morning, afternoon and evening hours are available. Insurance may be processed for partial payment. How will COVID-19 change us?
D
uring this very difficult time of uncertainty, one thing remains the same – the strength of our community. Like many of you, our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors, family and friends who may have lost someone they love or who may be battling this virus themselves. This is a difficult time for all of us and I think most have experienced or at least witnessed things that perhaps a year ago we could not have imagined such as the loss of life, unemployment rates this high, and a pandemic that may very well permanently change our lives. Perhaps it should permanently change the way we live? Perhaps the silver lining in all of this will be that once the fierce grip of this pandemic has softened, we will emerge having learned some valuable lessons that from those lessons will come positive changes. I teach my children that every loss or failure is an opportunity to learn, and that with determination, perseverance and some conviction we can emerge stronger and better than ever before. This is certainly one of those situations. At a minimum, I think it already has given us an opportunity to reflect and think about how we live and the choices we make. The COVID-19 crisis has caused an unprecedented level of emotional, social, financial and physical stress for the nation as a whole.Despite the immense stress, and in the face of overwhelming odds and adversity, I’m inspired by, and grateful for, the bravery and courage of our front line health care providers and other essential workers that are helping us all get through this crisis. This pandemic has made us think and act in the best interest of our neighbors, friends and family. This pandemic, like many crises before, has made us think about our neighbors’ situation and what they may be going through, and most importantly how we can help. My company, ProFysio Physical Therapy, is, fortunately for the patients we serve and our team members, deemed essential and continues to operate with limited hours and the implementation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended best practice. However, like many small businesses, we are combating an unfamiliar foe in COVID-19 and have been faced with some hard decisions and certainly the financial and emotional stress of a difficult situation and an uncertain future. My partner and I work tirelessly every day to ensure that we deliver needed treatment for our patients and keep as many of our team members employed as possible. And despite all of this, we continue to think

Health & Fitness In the midst of the pandemic, seasonal allergies peak By Dr. Philip Pasternak
I
n these uncertain times where maintaining our health has never been so important, let’s remember that not everything that sneezes, wheezes or coughs (along with a runny nose and severe itchy eyes) is related to COVID-19. The most common culprit for these symptoms at this time of year are those dreaded seasonal allergies. An estimated 35 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergic rhinitis, more commonly known as hay fever. The biggest spring allergy trigger is pollen. These are tiny grains released into the air by trees, grasses and weeds for the purpose of fertilizing other plants. When pollen grains get into the nose and eyes of someone who is allergic, they send the immune system into overdrive. The immune system, mistakenly seeing the pollen as foreign invaders, releases antibodies which bind to the allergens and leads to the release of inflammatory molecules including histamine and leukotrienes. These chemicals trigger the runny nose, sneezing, itchy watery eyes, and scratchy throat, which typify hay fever. Allergy suffers will often feel stuffed up, con-

food and toy drives in collaboration with nonprofit organizations to have a positive impact on our community. Just this week, ProFysio made monetary donations to local nonprofit organizations that serve our most vulnerable neighbors, because no one should go hungry. What’s next? At ProFysio, we are busy planning for a bright future for the patients we serve and our team members. We are embracing this time to plan and implement permanent changes that will ensure the safety of our patients and the longevity and viability of our company. For example, we are actively working on enhancements to our telehealth systems so that when our patients can’t come to the office for any reason they can have access to their Doctor of Physical Therapy and receive treatment via smartphone, tablet or computer. We’ve never been a practice that overbooks patients so while other companies
gested and headachy. They can be moody and irritable. Allergic rhinitis related to pollen occurs most commonly in the spring and late summer, the times of year when allergenic plants produce most of their pollen. There is a very predictable pattern to the pollen release: in the first few week of spring, trees like elm, maple and birch release their pollen, followed by the ash, sycamore and oak; later in the spring and early summer, grass pollens spread into the air, often starting in early May and lasting through mid-July. Various weeds can begin to pollinate in spring (such as sage) or summer (such as plantain). However, the dominant weeds (for example, ragweed) often produce their allergens in the late summer to fall, a process that may continue until the first frost. Pollen can travel for miles, spreading a path of misery for allergy sufferers along the way. The higher the pollen count, the greater the misery. As a general rule, sunny, windy days correlate with higher pollen counts as compared to damp, rainy days where the pollen counts drop because the allergens are washed away. In addition to seasonal allergic rhinitis, many individuals may also suffer from pemay struggle to avoid overcrowding in treatment areas this will not be a problem for us. Nevertheless, we are working on new access features and scheduling models that will provide even more space between patients and appointments. As a company we have always had very short wait times because we understand how important and valuable your time is. But now, in order to reduce the amount of people in reception areas and increase convenience, we’ll be implementing new technology, convenience and self service features to nearly eliminate any and all wait times and the potential for the transfer of germs and bacteria. Some believe that this is only the first wave of COVID-19 or that it may only be the tip of the iceberg. Unfortunately I don’t have a crystal ball. But what I do know is that if we continue to consider, care, advocate and act in the best interest of our fellow human being and that if we choose to learn and change from this experience we will emerge stronger and wiser than before. That’s the approach we are taking at ProFysio.
rennial allergic rhinitis, which are indoor allergies. These include allergies to dust mites, cat and dog dander. Molds are both indoor and outdoor allergens. Mold spores tend to rise in damp, humid weather and they are prominent in the fall with decaying leaves. The treatment of allergies involves a three-pronged approach. Prevention measures should be instituted. This is easier for indoor allergies such as dusting and vacuuming frequently for dust mite control as well as eliminating carpets and pets from the bedroom. Pollen and outdoor mold spores cannot be avoided. Limit your time outdoors when pollen counts are high. Exercise where and when pollens are least likely to affect you. Don’t exercise in parks where pollen-bearing trees and grass are prevalent. The best days for exercise are those that are overcast and free of winds. Keep the windows in your home shut to prevent pollen and mold spores from drifting in. If you have been outdoors, shower and wash your hair before going to sleep. Pollen gets trapped in your hair and on your skin when you are outdoors. Medications play an important role in the control of allergy symptoms. These in-
clude antihistamines, decongestants, nasal sprays and allergy eye drops. Even though you can buy many of these allergy drugs without a prescription, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor first to make sure these medications are right and safe for you. If medications are not sufficient to restore health, the allergic symptoms may be controlled or eliminated with immunotherapy, better known as allergy shots. Allergy shots have been used since 1911. This time-tested therapy decreases a person’s sensitivity by introducing increasingly larger doses of the substances to which that person is allergic. The treatment is a method for increasing the allergic person’s natural resistance to the things that are triggering the allergic reactions. There are several exciting therapies in the pipeline, but you don’t have to wait for the future. Get tested. Get treated. Get better. Dr. Philip Pasternak, M.D., is a board certified allergist and assistant professor at the Department of Allergy and Immunology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Dr. Pasternak has private practices in East Brunswick and Lakewood. He can be reached at 732-254-

East Brunswick approves storm emergency funds for COVID-19 relief By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer
EAST BRUNSWICK–The Township Council approved a resolution authorizing the use of Storm Recovery Reserves in response to the novel coronavirus crisis. Municipalities and counties with Storm Recovery Reserves may use those funds for COVID-19 response, according to the council. “This is the ability to take monies that

masks; 80 3M medical N95 masks; 1,000 medical KN95; and $2,500 in Shop Rite, Stop and Shop, Aldi gift cards. Shen said the group also delivered 400 travel-sized hand sanitizers and gift cards to residents. Islamic Center of East Brunswick member Mohammed Hashmi said the center has put together a team of volunteers who help residents who are in need, whether with their personal needs, picking up prescriptions or medicine, getting a ride, or getting help with groceries. Once a resident emails the center for assistance, Hashmi said he or she will be put in touch with a volunteer based on their location. Hashmi said the center also started a GoFundMe page where donations will be distributed to the township, local registered charities, and/or families from the community in need of financial assistance. “We are trying to cater to all those needs. We are reaching out actively to our neighbors … myself included and all the community members in [the] Muslim organization have been advised to reach out to the neighbors proactively and see if they are in need of any of the services that we are happy to provide,” Hashmi said. we put in the storm reserve fund. Generally, townships have reserves for storms, be it a hurricane, snowstorm or whatever,” Business Administrator Joseph Criscuolo said. “So we have a reserve fund set up and it is dedicated for that and in this state of emergency, we are allowed by resolution to move that money over to make those funds available in the state of emergency.” State law allows a municipality or county to adopt a resolution authorizing
Storm Recovery Reserve funds to be used for “any purpose necessary to protect the safety, security, health and welfare of its citizens from the damage caused by an emergency declared by the governor or president of the United States,” according to the council. “Most likely, most of this stuff that we’re purchasing here will be reimbursable either through federal … grants or through the [Federal Emergency Manage-
ment Agency] at a certain percentage rate,” Criscuolo said. “Some of that just allows you to have the funds available that was set aside for storm emergency.” Any reimbursement of these expenditures will be deposited back into the reserve, according to the council. The council approved the resolution during the April 27 council meeting. For more information, visit www.eastbrunswick.org/129/Agendas-Minutes.

Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition.
