ith protective gear needed now more than ever, a 5-year-old boy asked his family to help out East Brunswick police officers. Brian Zhang, Brendan’s father, said that when COVID-19 impacted the community last month, his son, who attends Pre-K at Hammarskjold Middle School’s Early Learning Academy, asked him to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE) for police officers. Brendan overheard his father talking about getting masks for their family and friends, and stated to his father that the township’s police officers need to
be protected as well, according to a prepared statement from the police department. Brendan offered to use his own money to purchase PPE because he didn’t know who would protect residents if police officers get sick from the virus, according to the statement. “I was surprised when he first brought it to my attention. Although I agree with his logic of our officers need to be better protected, the efforts are out of reach for him,” Zhang said. “I answered back with financing the mask question to him, and again to my surprise, he told me that he is willing to use his money. At that point, I was willing to support his idea because he was insisting
on getting this done.” Having turned Brendan down on many occasions to buy various personal items, Zhang said for this cause he wanted his son to see the different reaction from him, and that he was willing to support his idea. He said he wanted to make a point that these types of actions will be encouraged. On May 6, Brendan, along with his father, delivered 1,000 medical-grade surgical masks, 480 N95 masks and 50 coveralls for critical situations to the East Brunswick police station. “Growing up, Brendan always had a mask on when we were outdoor playing during the winter. he Borough of South River is partnering with Central Jersey Urgent Care, My Instadoc, and Clarity Labs to bring a drive-thru COVID-19 testing site to the borough. The testing site will offer both blood draw tests for COVID-19 antibodies and COVID-19 nasal swab testing, according to a prepared statement from the South River Police Department. The testing site will be able to conduct up to 200 tests per day and will remain open as long as there is a demand for testing. Priority for COVID-19 nasal swab testing will be given to individuals experiencing symptoms and individuals who have been in close contact with somebody who has tested positive for COVID-19, according to police. The testing site will be at the Saint Mary Coptic School’s Parking Lot, located at 80 David St., according to police. Testing will be done from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays by appointment only. Prior to receiving an appointment for testing, residents must first schedule and complete a telemedicine appointment. Telemedicine appointments are available at 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, according to police. The process residents must follow to use the services at the testing center include: • Schedule a virtual telemedicine appointment • Residents must complete their telemedicine visit • After their telemedicine visit, residents will receive a testing appointment time • Residents then should arrive at the testing site at their assigned appointment time. • Receive their drive-thru blood draw or nasal swab test • Expect a phone call three to four days after their test Residents will need to bring a photo ID

East Brunswick Daisy troops donate water, Gatorade to local heroes
E
ast Brunswick Daisy Girl Scouts in Kindergarten Troop 81920 and First Grade Troop 81624 came together to honor the heroes at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the East Brunswick Police Department, the local COVID-19 testing site at MedExpress and the local food bank. The girls spent hours making homemade cards with heartfelt messages that now pepper the offices of hospital staff, the pediatric unit at RWJ hospital and police headquarters. “Through their Girl Scout work, the girls learned the importance and value of helping others,” Troop Leader Julia Pey-
sakhova said in a prepared statement. “The girls also learned to work together while sheltering at home to make all of this happen.” The girls voted unanimously to use the proceeds from their Girl Scout cookie sale to purchase cases of water and Gatorade. Their troop leaders talked to them about how important it is to stay hydrated when working really long hours. The girls are planning a second phase of their project. They are making more cards and asking family and friends for donations of water and Gatorade. They plan to make the second donation during the week of May 18.

Spotswood announces drive-thru graduation despite petition By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer
SPOTSWOOD – Superintendent Graham Peabody has announced the Spotswood Public School District will hold a drive-thru ceremony on June 23 for its graduating Spotswood High School seniors. Despite the district’s graduation plans, Spotswood High parents started a petition asking Peabody, the Board of Education and the district’s administration to have the Spotswood High School graduation at a later date so an in-person graduation can be held. The petition asks the district to delay holding a virtual or drive-thru graduation and instead consider planning a formal ceremony for July or even August. The senior class parents are willing to help coordinate a graduation celebration on the school football field or any other location deemed acceptable should the district so allow them,
according to the petition. With a goal of garnering 500 signatures, the petition had more than 400 signatures as of press time. “After much deliberation, on April 29, our high school principal communicated with our seniors that we were planning a car processional followed by a drive-thru ceremony at our high school,” Peabody said. Peabody said the district is aware of the parents’ petition and remains in communication with the family that posted it. “As direction from the state continues to evolve, this seems less and less realistic. With that said, it remains our mission to celebrate our seniors in a manner that is respectful, responsible and equitable for all of our graduates,” Peabody said. For more information about the graduation ceremony, visit www.spsd.us. Contact Vashti Harris at vharris@newspapermediagroup.com.

Spotswood tables resolution for human resource officer position By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer
SPOTSWOOD – The Borough Council tabled a resolution authorizing Mayor Edward Seely to appoint Administrative Assistant Cate Leedy as the municipality’s first human resources officer due to an unclear definition of the position’s roles. The borough, based upon receipt of a directive dated Oct. 15, 2019, from the New Jersey Civil Service Commission to all municipalities, has deemed it necessary to establish the position of a human
resources officer, specifically to address employees who are victims of domestic violence, according to information provided by the council. The position would be established for the calendar year. The position will report directly to the mayor and will perform duties as instructed by the mayor, according to the council. The council tabled the resolution, which would have appointed Leedy, who is the administrative assistant to the mayor and business administrator, to the position
of human resources officer for the calendar year with a stipend in the amount of $8,000 during the May 4 council meeting. Council President Larry Kraemer said a human resource director who works for the federal government informed him that there are no requirements for the human resource position, as long as the person doesn’t interact with payroll. “[Leedy] can learn things online if she chooses to or if the borough chooses to ask her to, but there are no requirements for her to assume this role,” Kraemer said. “It’s a

human resources representative [position], her main job is to rectify any grievances or set them along in motion if there is a grievance between one employee and another employee.” Borough Attorney Lawerance Sachs said this is an additional position and the resolution is not shifting the business administrator’s human resource duties over to this new position. “We were told that this position was going to be human resources … and that the raise [Leedy] was getting was so that she would perform the human resources function and the stipend was for the function,” Councilman Ted Ricci said. “The $12,000 raise was to bring her salary up for her administrative aid. It had nothing to do with human resources.” Leedy will receive a salary increase of $12,000 for the administrative assistant position and the annual salary currently exceeds the borough’s present salary ordinance and it is the council’s intent to amend the ordinance prior to year-end, according to the council. “I have a problem with that, so we are appointing someone to be the human resources representative who has no background as far as I know … no background [and] no training in human resources matters,” resident Dulce Branco-Rivera said. “So basically, we are going to go back to the same problem we had in the beginning, having someone who doesn’t understand human resource rules and regulations to handle human resources.” Branco-Rivera said she has nothing against Leedy, but she does think that appointing her to the human resources officer position is not responsible and the $12,000 salary increase is outrageous. “[Leedy] was given a job and she was given a salary and then you give increases to those salaries. A $12,000 increase is just outrageous and then you wonder why taxes keep going up because you keep throwing these high amounts of money at whatever person you decide who is the one on the top pedestal,” Branco-Rivera said. Seely said the position is a non-paying job and it can be appointed to anybody. “[Leedy] is going to be a human resources person but she is working with the assistance of both attorneys. … Keeping in mind the average low-end salary for this job is around $57,000,” Seely said. “Now basically that’s what it all comes down to is if the employees are comfortable and if she does a good job. I don’t know what the real issue is here.” Ricci asked that the resolution be tabled until more specific language regarding what duties the new position entails is made clear in the resolution, to which Sachs agreed.

State officials do not green light truck ban ordinance By ANDREW HARRISON Staff Writer
T
EAST BRUNSWICK WATER & SEWER UTILITY
he New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) did not approve Monroe Township’s truck ban ordinance that would have put weight restrictions on three county routes. If the ordinance had been approved by DOT, the law would have enforced a weight restriction of no more than 8 tons on commercial trucks that are permitted to travel on Cranbury Station Road, Prospect Plains Road and Cranbury-Half Acre Road, all of which are county routes. “We really need to come up with a regional solution. I understand Monroe’s position and understand their need to consider this, but I think in regards to a longterm solution to this we need to all come to the table,” Cranbury Mayor Matt Scott said. “We are pleased with the state’s decision and I have had a recent conversation with Monroe Mayor Gerald Tamburro. I am optimistic that this decision will stand.” For the ban to be implemented it needs both Middlesex County and DOT approval. Charles Reilly, supervisor of Traffic Investigations at the Bureau of Traffic Engineering (BTE), stated in a letter to township officials on April 21 that he could not recommend the approval of the weight re-
strictions after review of Monroe’s Traffic Study and field investigation by staff of the BTE. He said reasons for non-approval are that no safety issues generated by commercial motor vehicles were identified in the submitted certified Engineer’s Report, or by an evaluation of the submitted motor vehicle crash reports by BTE; no supporting resolutions for proposed alternate routes within Cranbury or other municipalities affected; and the proposed alternate routes would force vehicles displaced by the weight limit restriction, to journey a more roundabout route involving additional time and distance to their destinations. “This state official, with all due respect, failed to recognize that a steady stream of truck traffic heading to and from Cranbury all day long is a detriment to the safety and quality of life of the residents who live along these streets,” Tamburro said. He added that he will be scheduling a meeting with state Transportation Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, to seek her approval for ordinance. “That is why we are meeting with Commissioner Gutierrez-Scaccetti and requesting her to act. This is a delicate issue involving senior citizens, school children and residents who live with a daily barrage
of truck traffic,” he said. “This is also a site of a future school. It cannot be fully understood by just reading studies in Trenton and then rendering recommendations.” In October, members of the Monroe council adopted an ordinance that bans tractor-trailers on three county roads be-
tween Monroe and Cranbury. Middlesex County officials moved the ordinance forward to the DOT. When Monroe’s elected representatives adopted the ordinance in the fall of 2019, their action was the continuation of debate regarding truck traffic between officials in Cranbury and Monroe.

LETTERS Chelsea Senior Living has years of senior care
C
helsea Senior Living operates 21 assisted living residences in New Jersey and New York. During the horrific COVID-19 pandemic, our senior population has been the most vulnerable to sickness and possible death because of preexisting medical conditions, diminished immune systems, the natural processes of aging and the fast spread of this particular virus. COVID-19 is also 10 times more lethal than the flu. We recognized early-on
that the coronavirus would pose an existential threat to our residents because we conduct year-round surveillance against other infectious diseases like the flu, norovirus and pneumonia and are painfully aware of the effects of quarantine and isolation on our population. Contrary to what officials and bureaucrats at various levels of government have portrayed, an assisted living (AL) residence is not the same as a nursing home.
OBITUARY Alexandra Louise (Sandy) Polansky ALEXANDRA LOUISE (SANDY) POLANSKY, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2020. It is with heavy hearts we share with all who knew and loved her that Sandy passed away at RWJUH in New Brunswick, NJ from complications of COVID-19, following several years of declining health due to a rare neurological disorder. Sandy was a restless and wild soul and we take consolation in knowing she is free from suffering and once again able to soar. Sandy, born April 28, 1958 at Middlesex General Hospital, New Brunswick, NJ was the 3rd child of Hilda and Ted Polansky, and joined older siblings Kathy and Billy. The family grew to include Peg, Julie, George and Chris, along with the many, many friends who became family. Shortly after graduating from East Brunswick High School, Class of 1976 Sandy set out for the wilds of Northern California where she spent over 10 years living off the land, communing with nature, and finding herself. Missing her family and realizing that her Jersey roots ran deep, Sandy returned to the Promised Land and began the next chapter in her life, which included attending Middlesex County College and then Rutgers University “University Without Walls” program, earning a BA degree with high honors in English in 1997. Sandy put her skills and talents to good use, first working in advertising and layout at the Asbury Park Press in Neptune and then as a Production Assistant at Transaction Publishers on the Livingston Campus of Rutgers University where she did typesetting, copy editing and production work. Sandy was a kind and generous soul who loved music and books and having fun. She was Bob Dylan’s number one fan and attended rock’n’roll concerts too numerous to mention. Sandy loved poetry, nature, travel, the Jersey shore, watching Jeopardy, a cold beer, lunch at Red Lobster and hanging out in her garage retreat, where friends and family were always welcome. Sandy was a gifted gardener whose flowers and vegetables grew aplenty. Sandy’s energy, creativity, and expansive spirit will never be forgotten. She was famous for her handcrafted birthday cards sent each year to her 11 nieces and nephews. Aunt Sandy instilled in them a love for Dance Parties, and encouraged and applauded their musical performances during the American Idol competitions that took place during our family gatherings. For many years she joined the kids in serenading the neighbors during our annual New Year’s Eve celebration. Sandy was predeceased by her father, Theodore Polansky in 2001, her brother, George E. in 1998 and her brotherin-law, Kevin M. O’Rourke in 1990. She leaves behind her mother, Hilda W. Polansky of East Brunswick. Sandy also leaves behind her longtime partner, David Marotta of Jamesburg. She is survived by her brother, William D. and his wife, Vicki of Bloomington, IN. She also leaves behind four sisters: Kathryn P. and her husband, Carl W. Smith, of East Brunswick; Margaret E. and her husband, John D. Henderson, of New Brunswick and Lauderhill, FL; Julia J. and her husband, Joseph J. Coles, of Easthampton, MA and Christine P. and her husband, Thomas L. George,of Douglas, MA. She will be dearly missed by her 11 nieces and nephews: Michael A. and his wife, Jennifer Goss O’Rourke, David P. and his wife, Makayla Thomas-Polansky, Samuel R. Polansky, Ivy K. Coles, Emma T. Coles, Theodore T. George, Audrey P. George, Rachel A. George, Thomas W. George, William E. George and Peter M. George. She is also survived by a great niece, Hayley A. O’ Rourke. Sandy’s family also included her step-nephews, Carl J. Smith, his wife, Jamie and their children, Aleister and Sloane, and Charles H. Smith and his daughter, Paris. The family would like to thank the medical team working on the 7th Floor Tower at RWJUH, and especially Dr. Emily Hiltner, MD. Funeral services are private with interment at Holy Cross Burial Park in South Brunswick, NJ. We cannot let our beloved Sandy depart without a grand gathering of her loved ones both near and far, so a celebration of Sandy’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, and for those who desire, contributions may be made, in Sandy’s memory, to the Middlesex County food bank, MCFOODS, 28 Kennedy Boulevard, Suite 850, East Brunswick, NJ 08816. Services were entrusted to The BRUNSWICK MEMORIAL HOME, East Brunswick and were private due to the COVID-19 federal restrictions on public gatherings. AL communities are homes to older Americans who require assistance with daily activities such as dressing, grooming, making it to meals on time and basic mobility. Our AL residents are generally not bedbound and do not require full time medical and nursing attention. They come to us as independent men and women and we strive to facilitate their independence while also keeping them safe and healthy. Residents in our Memory Care areas receive 24/7 support from specially trained staff. Our own regulatory agencies, including the New Jersey and New York departments of health, along with local and regional health departments, continue to lump us together with nursing homes. Our industry has become a whipping boy for governmental agencies at the highest levels which are now scapegoating their own lack of action early in the pandemic. Highly publicized lapses in care and high death rates at a very few nursing homes have cast a pall over the entire senior living/senior care industry and sparked knee-jerk responses from politicians and bureaucrats hellbent on showing they suddenly care. These responses include surprise inspections at properties that have suffered high absenteeism among employees, unrealistic new surveillance requirements with no regard to the ability of a community to carry them out, let alone their actual effectiveness, and an overall attitude that we are lax in our care as a default setting. From the beginning and even today, the long term care industry has been left on its own to acquire personal protective equip-

ment (PPE), hand sanitizer and testing. We received no support from the New Jersey or New York state health departments. Instead, we initiated our own ban on visitation, our own standards for screening employees and our own standards for surveillance and testing of residents. We care for those who are sick. If they become very sick, we get them to the hospital in a timely fashion. Most of our residents and staff who have been hospitalized have recovered. It is a great loss to us when any one of them dies. The state agencies have been woefully behind on all of it and are now playing catch-up by smacking down on operators as though we are the cause of the disease instead of victims. Chelsea has a 30-year history of caring for senior citizens, first as a nursing home provider and then starting in the late ’80s as a pioneer of assisted living. We know how to provide safe and healthy environments for senior citizens. It’s tragic that the coronavirus has become a feared fact of life and that our government, even today, seems unable to respond effectively to the threat. We urge our state departments of health to provide actual solutions to obstacles to care instead of handing out blocks of blame and issuing pointless directives to overwhelmed care staffs. Postal employees ask for social distancing
D
uring these challenging times, postal employees are working hard to ensure residents stay connected with their world through the mail. Whether it’s medications, a package, a paycheck, benefits or pension check, a bill, or a letter from a family member, postal workers understand that every piece of mail is important. While service like this is nothing new to us, we need help in the communities with social distancing. For everyone’s safety, our employees are following the social distancing precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health officials. We are asking people to not approach our carriers to accept delivery. Let the carrier leave the mailbox before collecting the mail. With schools not in session, children should also be encouraged to not approach a postal vehicle or carrier. If a delivery requires a signature, car-
riers will knock on the door rather than touching the bell. They will maintain a safe distance, and instead of asking for a signature on their mobile device, they’ll ask for the resident’s name. The carrier will leave the mail or package in a safe place for retrieval. We are proud of the role all our employees play in processing, transporting, and delivering mail and packages for the American public. The CDC, World Health Organization, as well as the Surgeon General indicate there is currently no evidence that COVID-19 is being spread through the mail. With social distancing, we can keep the mail moving while keeping our employees, and the public, safe. Michael Deignan District Manager U.S. Postal Service Northern New Jersey District

He said it only took about a week to finalize on suppliers and products. “Once we agreed on the items’ quantity and price, I made the payment and the shipment was sent to us here in East Brunswick,” Zhang said. “Logistics was a nightmare because the shipment was sent out on March 18, but I didn’t receive them until April 27.” The police department believes this was a truly generous offer from a child who was willing to use his own money and wanted to acknowledge him for his efforts, according to the statement.
