ike Wieder has been a mobile deejay for more than 37 years. Three years ago, he started a division of his company, Ultimate Sounds Entertainment, called NJ Bubble Parties that specialized in bubble dance parties for preschools and young children. “When this pandemic started it seemed like people lost their smiles. So, I thought about things I could do to help bring those

smiles back. Nothing makes people of all ages smile quite like bubbles. I packed a couple of bubble machines and a speaker into the back of my car (The Bubble Mobile) and started driving around the East Windsor/Monroe area playing music and blasting bubbles,” Wieder said. “From that we started getting requests, asking us to participate in drive by parades and then requests for us to come to birthday par-

ties, anniversaries, etc. So, I put together a 15-minute program that is upbeat, fun for all ages and full of bubbles. It can be done in a parking lot, in front of a house, on your lawn, in a cul-de-sac and just about anywhere we have a safe spot to park, dance and blow thousands of bubbles,” he said. he Township Council approved a resolution in support of the East Brunswick Public Library’s anticipated $8.7 million expansion project. The library Board of Trustees proposed improvements, renovations and re-purposing within the library facility and construction of additional space featuring an adult quiet reading room and a teen meeting space, according to the council. The realized and anticipated population growth and the evolving role of information sharing through instruction and presentation create service gaps in meeting the needs of residents, according to the council. Key elements of the expansion project include: • The creation of a new space which includes a 5,925-square-foot teen space, a 1,740-square-foot adult quiet reading space and a 985-square-foot seating area including a new entry vestibule. • Improvements to the existing space including parking lot improvements, ADA-compliant family restrooms, HVAC updates, small group study rooms, an expanded children’s area and quiet room. The council approved the resolution formally establishing its commitment to the library’s expansion project on May 18 during the council meeting via video conference. Although the total cost of the expansion and renovation plan is approximately $8.7 million, the trustees are filing a grant (Continued on page 8)

South River native discusses oceanology while serving in Navy By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

W

ith a passion for military service, math and science, South River native and U.S. Naval Lt. Stephanie Geant talked about oceanology as part of New Jersey’s Virtual Navy Week. Due to the U.S. Department of the Navy’s public health precautions, New Jersey Navy Week, scheduled for May 11-17, was re-imagined into New Jersey Virtual Navy Week, an online virtual outreach event hosted on the Navy Office of Community Outreach’s social media platforms, according to a prepared statement from the Navy Office of Community Outreach Media Outreach Department. Navy Office of Community Outreach Public Affairs Specialist Dustin Good interviewed Geant on May 12 via Facebook Live. Geant said she is stationed at the Navy Meteorology and Oceanographic Command at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, where she serves as the flag aide to the commander. “My current job, it’s not as math and science-intensive as some of … the other positions within naval oceanography. So I manage the admiral’s schedule, travel plans and it’s really an overview of the whole community naval oceanography,” Geant said. “So while it may not be math and science-intensive, learning about traveling definitely makes up for not being as hands-on in the math and science realm.” Geant said naval oceanography as a whole involves the bottom of that ocean to the stars. So there’s not a ship that sails, a submarine that goes underway, or an aircraft that flies without naval oceanography. “If you want to think, basically all Navy operations start with [oceanography]. So if you want to know the weather forecast, you want to know what your seas are doing, [what] the oceans like, precise navigation and time, everything on your cell phone comes from the United States Navy and naval oceanography. So the time that is on everyone’s cell phone is part of oceanography. So it’s a lot of stuff and it’s really cool,” she said. For those who are not familiar with oceanography, Geant said she likes to think of it as everything that is not above the waterline. “If you think about the symmetry of the ocean floor … to how the water acts in the water column based on water temperature, currents, tides, and all that, it has an affect on sound propagation, which is huge to submarines,” Geant said. “So just understanding that and I think [with] oceanography sometimes people think mammals and dolphins and all that really cool stuff, but it’s a lot more than that.” Born and raised in New Jersey, Geant said she lived there until she was 18 and then went to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. “I was 11 years old when Sept. 11 [2001] happened and seeing the Twin Towers, not fall, but the aftermath – seeing the smoke in my town, my dad working a double shift as a police officer, and my mom eventually getting laid off,” Geant said. “I think it had a huge influence on me [and] … why I was so angry that something like this could happen. I knew I wanted to serve. So just the proximity

to New York City on Sept. 11 alone shaped me to where I am today.” Being the kid who would dress up as G.I. Joe, Geant said by the time she was in sixth or seventh grade she knew she wanted to be in the military. “During my high school career, I just knew I wanted to go to a service academy,” Geant said. “So I shaped everything I did, from getting good grades, studying, taking the credit courses, [Advanced Placement] classes and calculus, and then getting involved in sports, making sure I had leadership on my record and kind of just molding the goal I was after, really helped.” Geant said she went to the Naval Academy with the intent of becoming a pilot and to study aerospace engineering; however, oceanography just really stood out to her. “So I majored in oceanography and it was cool. The fact … there’s so much to the ocean to learn about and then there’s the weather side, so I focus more on the atmospheric sciences and all the math that’s involved,” Geant said. “So at the Naval Academy, in oceanography alone, you take all the way up to differential equations. … Then at the Naval Academy, you also take two semesters of electrical engineering, chemistry, physics, and it’s just very math and science [intensive].” Since graduating from the Naval Academy, Geant said she started off as a surface warfare officer and did two surface warfare tours on ships, and both out of Norfolk, Virginia. “I switched over to become a meteorology officer, which is part of the information warfare community. … So after that, I went to join the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as a command duty officer and then I was there for about two years. … It was one of the coolest tours I’ve had so far,” Geant said. Geant said the Joint Typhoon Warning Center does ty-

phoon or hurricane warnings throughout the western, Pacific southern hemisphere and does repackaging warnings for the central and eastern Pacific for the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, which is in Honolulu, Hawaii. It also does tsunami warnings for the U.S. Department of Defense. “In the practical sense, you’re not necessarily sitting there writing a math problem out, but the forces that are the Earth has, the rotation, [and] the atmospheric instability all play into whether or not a storm system is going to form,” Geant said. “That’s why you always hear ‘well if you’re in the southern hemisphere and if you flush a toilet, it’ll rotate the other way.’ That’s not a true statement, but it’s caused by a force on the earth.” Geant said the Coriolis Force is needed in order to have a hurricane. She said her craziest experience while serving as far was when was in Hawaii during the 2018 Hawaii false missile alert incident. “After my current position … I’m going to go to graduate school at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and I’ll get a master’s in physical oceanography and meteorology,” Geant said. “From there, I’ll go to a ship for a two-year tour, or Carrier Strike Group to be the oceanographer of the ship or the strike group.” For students who are interested in becoming an oceanographer, Geant said she would encourage them to take math classes. “Don’t allow yourself to get behind because the forces of the earth are a math problem,” Geant said. “So just understanding having that mathematical foundation and then being able to apply that to the science realm, and how math fits into the global effects.”

Jamesburg council adopts $6.12M municipal budget By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

JAMESBURG – The Borough Council has adopted a $6.12 million municipal budget to fund the municipality’s operations and services during 2020. The council adopted the budget on May 20 during a meeting held via video conference. The $6.12 million budget will be supported in part through the collection of a $4.38 million local tax levy to be paid by Jamesburg’s residential and commercial property owners, according to Business Administrator Scott Frueh. In 2019, the municipal budget totaled $5.87 million and was supported in part by a $4.3 million local tax levy.

From 2019 to 2020, appropriations have increased by $249,900 and the local tax levy has increased by $77,840, according to Frueh. Municipal officials may appropriate money from the borough’s surplus fund to use as revenue in the budget. In 2019, council members used $220,000 from surplus. In 2020, council members will use $490,000 from surplus, according to Frueh. State aid to support the budget will remain the same in 2020 as it was in 2019: $413,905. In 2019, the municipal tax rate was $1.81 per $100 of assessed valuation. The average home in the borough was assessed at $122,789. The owner of that home paid $2,221 in municipal taxes.

In 2020, the municipal tax rate is projected to be $1.83 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. The average home in the borough is now assessed at $123,214. The owner of that home will pay about $2,255. Municipal taxes are one item on a property owner’s tax bill, which also includes Jamesburg Public School District taxes and Middlesex County taxes. Frueh said health costs in the 2020 budget have decreased due to the state’s health plan decreasing for active members. The budget shows an appropriation of $490,000 for Employee Group Insurance – Other Expenses. That same line item in the 2019 budget had an appropriation of $525,000. No new municipal employees have been hired, however, borough officials

may hire a new deputy court administrator later in the year to replace a previous employee. “We do not currently know of any [municipal employee] retirements,” Frueh said. Frueh said no municipal departments are being eliminated or consolidated. In regard to potential capital improvements, Frueh said the borough only has New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) grants for road reconstruction for general capital. The borough has set aside $60,000 in sewer capital for a new truck. For more information about the municipal budget, visit www.jamesburgborough. org/government/borough_council/financial_transparency.php#outer-84.

EAST BRUNSWICK – The Township Council approved a resolution authorizing DMR Architects to provide architectural design services for the East Brunswick Senior Center’s roof replacement. Business Administrator Joseph Criscuolo said the roof is old and needs repair.

application with the state for 50% of construction costs, or approximately $4.35 million, according to the council. The council approved the concept plan, anticipating a contribution of $3.7 million in township capital funds towards the 50% match required for the state grant. “The ability to have a library construction bond is something that is done once every 20 years. It’s rare that the state is willing to contribute half the money to any funding for any type of construction or any type of work for that matter involving construction for anything, let alone the library,” Mayor Brad Cohen said. Even if the library did not want to do any of the expansion upgrades, Cohen said it is still the township’s building. The township agreed more than a year ago that it would put $1 million into repairing the library’s HVAC system, which has been long overdue. “There are problems with the entranceway, there are problems with the parking lot. This is all a way of being able to roll up some of these needs, along with the library’s internal needs all in one, and having the state paid for half of that. [This] opportunity probably will not come again,” Cohen said. The East Brunswick Public Library Foundation will conduct a capital fundraising campaign to raise $200,000. The trust-

The council approved the resolution awarding DMR Architects a $37,500 contract on May 18 during the council meeting via video conference. Criscuolo said now that the resolution has been approved the architect will create the spec for the roof replacement project to go out to bid. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the senior center is still closed.

ees have pledged $200,000 and fundraising to raise an additional $250,000 to provide the balance reach $4.35 million in matching funds, according to the council. By approving the resolution, Cohen said it does not mean the governing body is obligated to anything but simply shows its support towards the project. If the project’s application is approved by the state, Cohen said the governing body can then decide to go through with the plan, reject it, or approve it but not in the form it was originally provided. “[The state] can decide to cut back on some of the things that we’re asking for and at that time, we would have the same choices,” Cohen said. “We could either go ahead and reduce the plan, alter it again, or reject it, or it’s even possible that the state could look at our application and reject it entirely, in which case we would have an opportunity to reapply. “I think that we should take that chance and weigh our options when we hear back from the state. So to use my sporting analogy, I think at this point we should throw out a fishing net and see what we’re able to actually get from the state,” he said. “We could always decide if we want to catch? Do you want to get rid of some of it or do you want to not take it at all?” For more information, visit www.eastbrunswick.org/129/Agendas-Minutes. In the midst of the pandemic, seasonal allergies peak By Dr. Philip Pasternak

I

n these uncertain times where maintaining our health has never been so important, let’s remember that not everything that sneezes, wheezes or coughs (along with a runny nose and severe itchy eyes) is related to COVID-19. The most common culprit for these symptoms at this time of year are those dreaded seasonal allergies. An estimated 35 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergic rhinitis,

more commonly known as hay fever. The biggest spring allergy trigger is pollen. These are tiny grains released into the air by trees, grasses and weeds for the purpose of fertilizing other plants. When pollen grains get into the nose and eyes of someone who is allergic, they send the immune system into overdrive. The immune system, mistakenly seeing the pollen as foreign invaders, releases antibodies which bind to the allergens and leads to the release of inflammatory molecules including histamine and leukotrienes.

Health & Fitness These chemicals trigger the runny nose, sneezing, itchy watery eyes, and scratchy throat, which typify hay fever. Allergy suffers will often feel stuffed up, congested and headachy. They can be moody and irritable. Allergic rhinitis related to pollen occurs most commonly in the spring and

late summer, the times of year when allergenic plants produce most of their pollen. There is a very predictable pattern to the pollen release: in the first few week of spring, trees like elm, maple and birch release their pollen, followed by the ash, sycamore and oak; later in the spring and early summer, grass pollens spread into the air, often starting in early May and lasting through mid-July. Various weeds can begin to pollinate in spring (such as sage) or summer (such as plantain). However, the dominant weeds (for example, ragweed) often produce their allergens in the late summer to fall, a process that may continue until the first frost. Pollen can travel for miles, spreading a path of misery for allergy sufferers along the way. The higher the pollen count, the greater the misery. As a general rule, sunny, windy days correlate with higher pollen counts as compared to damp, rainy days where the pollen counts drop because the allergens are washed away. In addition to seasonal allergic rhinitis, many individuals may also suffer from perennial allergic rhinitis, which are indoor allergies. These include allergies to dust mites, cat and dog dander. Molds are both indoor and outdoor allergens. Mold spores tend to rise in damp, humid weather and they are prominent in the fall with decaying leaves. The treatment of allergies involves a three-pronged approach. Prevention measures should be instituted. This is easier for indoor allergies such as dusting and vacuuming frequently for dust mite control as well as eliminating carpets and pets from the bedroom. Pollen and outdoor mold spores cannot be avoided. Limit your time outdoors

when pollen counts are high. Exercise where and when pollens are least likely to affect you. Don’t exercise in parks where pollen-bearing trees and grass are prevalent. The best days for exercise are those that are overcast and free of winds. Keep the windows in your home shut to prevent pollen and mold spores from drifting in. If you have been outdoors, shower and wash your hair before going to sleep. Pollen gets trapped in your hair and on your skin when you are outdoors. Medications play an important role in the control of allergy symptoms. These in-

)

clude antihistamines, decongestants, nasal sprays and allergy eye drops. Even though you can buy many of these allergy drugs without a prescription, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor first to make sure these medications are right and safe for you. If medications are not sufficient to restore health, the allergic symptoms may be controlled or eliminated with immunotherapy, better known as allergy shots. Allergy shots have been used since 1911. This time-tested therapy decreases a person’s sensitivity by introducing increasingly larger doses of the substances to which that person is allergic. The treatment is a method for increasing the

allergic person’s natural resistance to the things that are triggering the allergic reactions. There are several exciting therapies in the pipeline, but you don’t have to wait for the future. Get tested. Get treated. Get better. Health & Fitness Quarantine Weight Gain? Lose it with ChiroTHIN By Ken Freedman, DC

ith orders to remain home and practice social distancing, many people are feeling stressed and feeling the pull. What’s pulling them? Their nearby refrigerator. The drivethrough at one of the many fast food chains, or local restaurants offering home food delivery. This type of eating can be bad for your health, and worse for your waistline, especially if you have already gained some extra pounds over the winter

months. Since 2010, we have helped hundreds of people lose weight fast and safely with the Doctor Supervised ChiroTHIN Weight Loss Program. Many people choose to come for their follow-up visits with me personally. For those who wish to remain home, we can arrange to support you through unlimited telephone consultations. While individual results vary, in only six weeks our patients typically lose 20-35 pounds and 14 to 20 inches. This program

is safe and effective for children over 10, and nearly all adults, including diabetics, people with high blood pressure, and people on medication(s). What happens after you reach your desired weight? The program includes easy-to-follow strategies for long-term weight management at no extra charge. Why is the ChiroTHIN Weight Loss Program better than other programs? Quality, accountability, freedom, results, safety and affordability. You have the freedom to select real food you buy at the

supermarket, prepared within their portion-controlled dietary guidelines. When followed as directed, ChiroTHIN Weight Loss Program patients achieve better results in a fraction of the time – and at a fraction of the cost – of other nationally advertised weight Dr. Ken Freedman loss programs. There are no exercises, drugs, hormones, prepackaged foods, shakes or bars. The products included in the program are the finest money can buy. Weekly private visits with me, either in person or over the phone, check your progress, with personalized recommendations and coaching. The Doctor Supervised ChiroTHIN Weight Loss Program is designed by doctors. The meals you make in the ChiroTHIN Program are delicious, easy to prepare, and can also be enjoyed by the patient’s entire family. Once the dining out restrictions are lifted, it will be easy for you to eat out within the ChiroTHIN program’s guidelines. Many patients who suffered with longstanding conditions such as high blood pressure, arthritis, joint pain, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia also saw improvement in these conditions during the six-week program. While the ChiroTHIN program is not a treatment for medical conditions, conditions that are influenced by excess weight or inflammatory foods respond better when the body has reduced excess weight and the person eats meals that don’t contain inflammatory foods. It’s a common-sense approach that people can live with — literally. The most gratifying part of the ChiroTHIN Program is sharing my patients’ joy as they look better and feel great. To find out if the Doctor Supervised ChiroTHIN Weight Loss Program is right for you at no charge or obligation, call 732-254-6011 for a private consultation. Working from home? Must read.

W

ith the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, many of us were thrown into working from home. The balance of work-life has been tossed aside as our dining rooms have become our work spaces and days of the week all blur into one. For the majority of Americans, we are struggling to cope with the new normal: balancing work, caring for children and cooking what may be the millionth meal of quarantine. As a physical therapist, I have, like you, had to change my daily work routine to sometimes working from home and providing telehealth sessions for patients who choose to not receive treatment in the office.ProFysio remains open and continues to serve patients in person, but telehealth has been extremely valuable for those folks that cannot leave their homes. Delivering significantly more treatment via telehealth than in the past has required me to be creative and innovative in the treatments that I prescribe for my patients to get them well. My patients have benefited from the new ways to rehabilitate at home. In addition, in order to deliver treatment via telehealth from my home office, I’ve had to create a functional work space that allows me to demonstrate therapeutic exercise all while managing time and of course my personal wellbeing. After many discussions with patients and peers who are also working through this I am here to share some tips on how to stay productive and healthy amongst the chaos. • Schedule your work hours and set limits: Discuss with your families so they are aware of what hours you are setting aside for strict work time to minimize distractions and improve productivity. Limit interruptions within your household but set limitations for yourself and colleagues for communications outside of those times. • Stick to your routine and get good quality sleep: Set alarms for waking up at the same time everyday, Your body thrives on routine and maintaining a normal sleep schedule is paramount. Eat healthy meals and avoid snacking throughout the day.

Avoid caffeine and alcoholic drinks late in the day, don’t nap for more than 20 minutes/day and evaluate your bedroom for comfortability. If pain is affecting your sleep a physical therapist can help evaluate your pillow set up as well as sleeping postures to reduce difficulty falling and staying asleep. • Exercise daily: It’s easy to work all day and then binge-watch your favorite television series especially when we are urged to stay at home but safely exercising for at least 30 minutes/day helps to reduce stress and maintain healthy

SENTINEL 13

hormone levels. While exercise is healthy, a pandemic is not the best time to begin a new, strenuous exercise routine. Stick to exercises you are familiar with and if you have doubt about how to manage a safe program or any underlying conditions contact your doctors or physical therapist. • Prepare your workspace: While most offices have prepared their employee workstations with all the necessary equipment our makeshift in-home spaces probably don’t add up. Do your best to create a workspace that reduces stress on your neck and back. Utilizing an external keyboard and mouse allows you to raise your monitor (especially when working on a laptop) to the proper visual height. Find a comfortable chair and use pillows to support your lumbar spine. • Take breaks: Don’t find yourself logging hours of screen time without taking breaks. Spending long periods of time staring at screens can take a toll on

your mental and physical health. Utilize the 20-20-20 rule as a way to remember to take frequent breaks. It’s simple, set an alarm for every 20 minutes, and take a 20 second break by looking at something 20 feet away. This is a great way to give your eyes a rest as well as get out of your chair and reduce the stress on your neck, back and shoulders. • Use technology to your advantage: Utilize telehealth to reach your doctors and physical therapists with concerns, acute or chronic issues or difficulties with home setup. Use video calls to stay in contact with family and friends. Although close physical contact is not allowed at this point we can all do our best to reach out and share our experiences. If you need assistance navigating exercise, wellness or managing your home office setup, contact ProFysio Physical Therapy, offering in-office and telehealth sessions.

Back pain – What’s effective? By Ken Freedman, DC

A

nyone who has ever suffered with low back pain will tell you it is not to be taken lightly. It can range from an ache that frustrates and limits you from doing the things that are important to you, to a crippling, disabling pain that holds your life hostage. In my 40 years as a chiropractor caring for thousands of people, most of my patients sought help for complaints of back pain. Most of them received fast, longstanding relief, even after drugs, physical therapy and surgery failed them. Why? Because our approach is less about treating the pain, and more about detecting, locating and reducing interferences to their body’s ability to heal and function better. Back pain sufferers

love chiropractic care because it is highly effective, drug and surgery free, and extremely safe. What contributes to back pain? • Abnormal physical stress. Placing a wallet in the back pocket and sitting on it will misalign the hips, disrupting proper pelvic and spinal alignment. High heeled shoes distort the alignment of the foot which continues throughout the entire body. Most people with perpetual back problems have problems with the alignment of their feet. Both need to be addressed. Poor posture is another offender. Be conscious of how you are standing and sitting. Since sitting is 5075% more stressful than standing, select a chair that is fully adjustable to your body

and also provides support to the curve in your lower back. Sleep on a supportive mattress with a pillow that doesn’t strain the neck. • Excess body weight. Every extra pound a person carries translates into four pounds of extra stress on the lower back. So, if your spine is out of alignment, the excess body weight on it is like hammering a bent nail. If you feel your body could benefit from shedding some extra pounds, get on a weight loss regimen. This will help take a great deal of stress off of your back, control flare-ups and lower your risk of obesity-related diseases, such as arthritis, cardiovascular, liver and cancer. Restrict your intake of the “three stooges” commonly found in the American diet: wheat, diary and processed sugars. In high concentrations they contribute to obesity and are highly inflammatory – making you more sensitive to stress and

movement. • Misalignment of the spine. This irritates the delicate nerves that carry energy to your body. Muscles and joints work less effectively. They are more prone to injury and don’t recover as fast or as fully. Specific chiropractic adjustments to the misaligned vertebrae reduce nerve irritation. Back muscles and joints heal faster and work much better. It’s natural, feels great and in most cases, corrects the underlying cause of back pain. Whether you have been suffering with a back problem, or would like to avoid developing one in the future, the best thing you can do is to schedule a chiropractic checkup. It’s relatively fast, painless and non-invasive. Most insurance plans offer coverage for chiropractic services related to back pain. You can also use dollars from your Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account. Your back is the lifeline to your body. Keep it functioning well, and your back will perform much better. You’ll control flare-ups of pain, move better, and age more gracefully and independently. BULLETIN BOARD

A “Drive-Thru” Free Tree Seedlings event will be held in East Brunswick as part of the New Jersey Forest Service’s New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign. Social distancing guidelines must be adhered to during the event, which will take place at 9 a.m. on June 6 at the Crystal Springs Family Waterpark, 380 Dunhams Corner Road, on a first come, first served basis. Masks and gloves are required. No one will be permitted to leave their vehicle at any time. Attendees will drive through the parking lot and receive a bag with five different seedling species that will be color-coded, along with instructions on how to store, care for and plant the trees. The guides help residents choose the right place on a property to plant a tree while keeping in mind the tree’s full-grown size in the future. Residents should plant the seedlings within two days after pick-up in order to prevent the roots from drying out. For a list of all distribution locations across the state, visit www.forestry.nj.gov or www.facebook.com/newjerseyforests. Regarding East Brunswick’s program, email Jill Veit at jveit@eastbrunswick.org.
