n efforts to combat discrimination in all forms, Mayor Trina Mehr announced the creation of Human Relations Commission. Mehr made the announcement at a peaceful protest at Milltown Boro Park on June 19. The peaceful protest was hosted by Katty Velez of Dreams of Home with Bell and Stockton LLC with the theme “We are One.” The event, in the wake of the events in Minneapolis, included guest speakers and a community open mic. George Floyd, an African American man, died after Minneapolis Police Department Officer Derek Chauvin, a white man, knelt on his neck for more than eight min-
utes after pinning him to the ground during an arrest on May 25. Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder on May 29. Three other officers, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng, were charged with aiding and abetting Floyd’s murder on June 3. Many in the crowd made signs – “Black Lives Matter” and “No Justice, No Peace.” Mehr said the creation of the Human Relations Commission would promote social and cultural harmony and cultivate understanding and acceptance in the borough. “I am here to listen and learn,” Mehr told the crowd. “I can assure you I denounce racism unequivocally. Racism has no place in Milltown.” Mehr said she believes the peaceful protests all around the country will bring about the changes needed to end racial in-
justice and anti-racist policies and bring on education and active participation. “Embracing diversity and creating a culture of inclusion can only make our town stronger,” she said. “Ensuring everyone has a voice and everyone can be heard and appreciated can help us grow and prosper in the future.” Mehr said as the theme of the peaceful protest states “We are One” Milltown, she challenged people to get involved, reach out to family and neighbors, and call out racist behaviors. “More importantly look in the mirror and ask yourself, have you done everything you can to be part of the solution, not the problem,” she said. “Let us extend out the hand of humanity because that’s really what it’s all about, treating everyone, every single person with kindness.”
etting the groundwork to revitalize longtime vacant properties, the South River Borough Council introduced an ordinance, which if adopted, will amend the municipal code to establish the Lincoln School Neighborhood Overlay District. “The Lincoln School Neighborhood Overlay District (LSNOD) is intended as a means of revitalizing the former Lincoln School educational facility in the borough. It provides the standards to transform this vacant, underutilized and obsolete former educational property into a viable land use, thus improving and stabilizing the fiscal health of the borough,” Borough Administrator Art Londensky said. The purpose LSNOD is to revitalize the long-vacant and contaminated former school site and surrounding properties, according to the council. Londensky said the LSNOD is located on Maple, William, Prospect and Reid streets. The plan allows property located at a highly visible intersection to be developed into a node for neighborhood business and mixed-use development, according to the council. The details of this overlay zone have been designed to advance the intent and purpose of the South River Master Plan, namely, to promote redevelopment of vacant buildings and to provide a reasonable transition between the downtown business district and the residential neighborhoods located north of Main Street, according to the council. The council introduced and approved the ordinance on June 22 during the council meeting via video conference. The second and final reading is scheduled for July 13. (Continued on page 8)

Seniors at Reformed Church Home in Old Bridge offer words of wisdom, advice to graduating seniors By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
T
he seniors at Reformed Church Home offered graduating seniors words of wisdom as they head off on their next journey in life. “Don’t take anything for granted, work to reach your goals and you’ll be happy,” Millie Romano said. The Reformed Church Home (RCH) threw its first Senior to Senior graduation celebration on June 16, filled with as much socially distanced pomp and circumstance for the graduates, who either worked at RCH or who are children of employees of RCH. RCH provides assisted living, rehabilitation, long-term nursing care and respite care services at its Old Bridge location. Amy Wendel, director of activities at RCH, said with canceled or postponed in-person graduations for high school and college seniors, and their seniors having been quarantined for so long due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Senior to Senior graduation celebration was born. Adelaide Wright told the graduating seniors to “continue their formal education, volunteer to help others while learning yourself, and find new things every day.” Magdalene Holland agreed. “Stay in school as long as you can, don’t be in a hurry to leave home and never, never stop listening to the grass,
birds, the wind … everything,” she said. The graduating seniors included Deanna Campbell, Brian Gray, Hannah Osbahr and Marlon Iann Vergara from Old Bridge High School; Kaitlyn Ann Mendoza from

Kate Shepard, executive director at RCH, welcomed the graduates and their families. Old Bridge High School Principal Vincent Sasso delivered the keynote speech. Following his speech, Sasso, along with Claudie Ramirez, a teacher at St. John Vianney, and Marybeth Drabik, a teacher at Sayreville War Memorial, offered testimonials from teachers and staff for the graduates. Michelle Agyemamg, director of social services at RCH, and Paula LeBlanc, director of development, presented diplomas for the graduates. Each graduate wore their respective cap and gown. After the ceremony, the graduates moved their tassels from right to left and with the lead from Casalaspro threw their caps in the air. The seniors, graduates and guests enjoyed refreshments, music from the RCH dining services and DJ Jerry Castaldo, and pictures in the Don Adams Memorial Garden. The graduating seniors also recieved a folder filled with advice from the seniors at RCH.

Solutions for arthritis pain
A
n estimated 27 million Americans have some form of osteoarthritis (OA). OA is the most common form of arthritis and is usually caused by the deterioration of the joint beginning with the articular cartilage. Risk factors associated with OA include trauma, previous surgery involving the joint, obesity and a lifestyle that excessively loads or stresses the joint. The weight-bearing joints are often affected, with the knee and the hip being the most common.
Many people struggling with lower extremity arthritis related pain may be under the impression that there is very little you can do to manage arthritis pain other than live with it or have surgery. This is a typical misconception and is most definitely not the case. There are several viable options that can help successfully manage arthritis pain and in some cases may abolish pain entirely. Lose weight. This is understandably often easier said than accomplished. How-

ever, there is no question that losing weight is one of the most effective ways of relieving not only load and stress to the lower extremity joints, but also has been shown to lead to improved overall health, improved quality of life, and certainly decreased arthritis related pain. A 10-15 pound weight loss can have a significant positive impact on pain levels. Losing weight is sometimes a bit more complicated for some folks but generally if you control your caloric intake, routinely exercise, and consume a diet with an emphasis on fresh foods, high in fiber, and is colorful with fruits and veggies it can definitely help. It is advisable to consult with a nutritionist for specific

details on how you can improve your diet and lose weight. Exercise. Research has shown that light to moderate activities can provide more benefit than harm to your joints and of course helps to promote weight loss. The key is selecting the right exercise for your condition, body type and any other notable limitations. There is unfortunately no one size fits all approach to exercise that will improve arthritis pain but there are a few activities that are typically appropriate for most arthritis patients such as light walking, pool exercise and low impact cycling. It is advisable to consult with your doctor of physical therapy so that they can prescribe an exercise program that is most appropriate for you. An evaluation and review of your radiographic imaging can help us determine the severity of arthritis and which movements or exercises will likely benefit your condition. It is worth noting that now with the availability of telehealth physical therapy, and the fact that it is covered by most insurances, we expect many arthritis pain sufferers will take advantage of the convenience and accessibility of this service and will benefit from significant pain relief. Manual Therapy is hands on treatment directed to a joint for the purpose of improved circulation, decreasing pain and improving mobility. This treatment is also known as joint mobilization and can provide significant relief for patients struggling with arthritis related pain. This is typically performed by a doctor of physical therapy, doctor of osteopathic medicine, or a doctor of chiropractic. Joint mobilization directed to the neighboring joints can lead to reduced load and stress to the arthritic joint by normalizing ROM and ground reactions forces. This means that your body will be better equipped to sustain normal

The convenience factor for the patient is also beneficial because they do not have to go to multiple locations for their treatments. When people come in with pain, they want to get better as fast as possible. Eliminating constant calls, emails or faxes from doctor’s office to doctor’s office helps the providers and lets the patient fo-

load from daily activity without undue stress and fatigue to the involved joint. Surgery in some cases of advanced arthritis is necessary. Your surgeon will discuss your options and it is wise to consult with an orthopedic surgeon when other treatments and management strategies have failed. Surgical intervention for arthritis, especially joint replacement, can have a dramatically positive effect on pain levels and quality of life. Post operative rehabilitation is critical to achieve optimal outcomes. We recommend you seek a physical therapy company that is going to provide enough one on one direct contact with a doctor of physical therapy and a quality based model such as ProFysio. If it seems that your current physical therapy provider of choice is “too busy” it’s probably because they are and you should seek another opinion or option. SPOTSWOOD – The Borough Council approved a resolution authorizing the advertisement for bids to demolish the vacant, boarded up house on Main Street. On Jan. 6, Spotswood council members approved a resolution containing the borough’s bill list to purchase the vacant property at 474 Main St. for $382,671. Mayor Edward Seely said the house on the property is condemned, abandoned and covered in vegetation. It sits next to a PNC Bank across from the Spotswood Funeral Home. The council approved the resolution authorizing Borough Clerk Patricia DeStefano to advertise for bids for the demolition of the property on June 8 during the council meeting via video conference. “The borough will be going out to bid for the demolition of 474 Main St. soon. The company preparing the bid packet is Centerstate Engineering and will be advertising for bids sometime during July,” DeStefano said.
On March 2, the council informed residents about the borough potential plans to turn the unoccupied property into a new firehouse. Council President Larry Kraemer said at the March 2 meeting that the borough is looking at building a new firehouse on the property. “As far as I am concerned it should be a firehouse. The old one is just not usable for what we need anymore. It’s old. It’s been around since 1960. It’s time to replace it,” Kraemer said. Councilman Jose Riveria said once the council makes a commitment to build a new firehouse, then it can start seeking grant funding to pay for the construction and design costs. Kraemer agreed with turning the vacant property into a new firehouse. Councilman Ted Ricci said personally he would rather see a new building the borough’s fire department and Emergency Medical Services could share if the property is big enough to have a few ambulances and fire trucks in it. The borough has not announced its official plans for the property as of yet.
Spotswood council introduces bond ordinance for capital improvements By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

SPOTSWOOD – Upcoming capital improvement projects in Spotswood include the purchase of a heated asphalt transporter hot box, the purchase of a masonry dump truck, funding for the 2020 Roadway Improvements Project and the purchase of an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) remounted ambulance with radio and medical equipment. To fund the $1,137,000 in total costs for the various improvements, the Borough Council introduced a bond ordinance dur-
ing the June 8 council meeting via video conference. The second and final reading is scheduled for June 22. The improvements will be funded with a $26,250 grant received from the New Jersey Recycling Tonnage Grant program, a $555,000 grant expected to be received from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, and $527,000 in negotiable bonds, according to the council. The borough will pay the remaining amount of $28,750 as the down payment for capital improvements, according to the council.

Borough Administrator Art Londensky said platforms, power pipe climbers for ages 2 to 5, swings, climber, player chimes, and a permanent safety surface will be purchased and installed at Varga Park. “The borough is using two contractors because the project is brought up from two co-ops that we are using so the Bergen County Cooperative Pricing System [Ben
Shaffer Recreation Inc.] has the agreement and from the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey co-op Whirl construction has the agreement,” Borough Chief Financial Officer Joseph Zanga said. The council approved the resolution awarding a contract giving $54,505 to Ben Shaffer Recreation Inc. and $50,699 to Whirl Construction during the council meeting on June 22 via video conference. With the resolution approved, Zanga said the equipment will be ordered in a few months. Once the equipment arrives it will take a little over two weeks to complete the project. East Brunswick drowning deemed accidental in nature EAST BRUNSWICK – Bharat Patel, 62, his daughter-in-law Nisha Patel, 33, and her daughter, 8, have been identified as the victims who perished on June 22 in a pool at a home in East Brunswick, Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Christopher Kuberiet and Chief of Police Frank LoSacco announced on June 23. All three victims resided at the home in East Brunswick, according to a prepared statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. East Brunswick police responded at
approximately 4:18 p.m. to 43 Clearview Road and found the three victims unresponsive in the pool; they were pronounced dead shortly after being found, according to the statement. Although the investigation is active, it was determined that electricity did not play a part in the death of these three victims, according to updated information released on June 24. The above-ground pool was mostly shallow at 3½ feet deep, but there was a portion of the pool that was 7 feet deep. It doesn’t appear that the victims
knew how to swim, officials said. The investigation is active and is continuing. Anyone with information should call East Brunswick Police Department Detective Kimberly DiParisi at 732-3906900 or Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Mark Morris at 732-7453927. South Brunswick Mayor Charles Carley asked for “a moment to reflect upon that terrible tragedy” during the June 23 council meeting, as the Patels recently moved from South Brunswick.

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA
Mazda 3 Hatchback
W
hen it comes to Japanese imports in the automotive world, most consumers immediately think of Toyota, Honda and Nissan. These are Japan’s Big Three. But, the real diamond in the rough, though, is Mazda. While Mazda doesn’t sell anywhere near the amount of vehicles that the Big Three pump out, it doesn’t take a back seat to any one of them when it comes to producing quality cars at a reasonable price. Peter Perrotta I recently jumped behind the wheel of the 2020 Mazda 3 Hatchback – with Premium Package – for one week to see if this under rated Japanese auto maker still has the mojo. Guess what? It sure does. Overall, after a week of putting this compact hatchback through its paces, I would say it checks off most of the boxes that would lead to an impressive review by this car reviewer. The only caveat I would have – and this probably would have to do more with me than the car itself – is that at a creaky 64 years of age, on a lanky six-foot frame, I found that bending down to get into and out of this model car was sometimes a chore – depending upon how creaky my bones were that particular day. So maybe this isn’t the car for the senior citizen crowd, but that doesn’t take anything away from the fine product it is. This Mazda 3 Hatchback competes with the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic in its segment and I would say it stacks up better than the Corolla and on par with the Civic. For the most part, buyers who are considering compact cars – especially hatchbacks – are generally of the younger crowd anyway.
Mazda 3 Hatchback
Case in point, my 21-year-old son thought the Mazda 3 Hatchback was “pretty cool”. For the record, the 2020 Mazda 3 Hatchback I tested for one week was the top of the line Premium Package edition with a base price of $28,900. The Premium Package edition comes standard with: active driving heads up display; adaptive front lighting system; leather seats; black finish alloy wheels; front and rear signature illumination; power sliding glass moonroof and paddle shifters. Additional options on my tester vehicle included: cargo mat ($100); illuminated door sill trim plates ($425); Soul Crystal Red Paint ($595); frameless auto dimming mirror ($275); Navigation SD card ($450); rear bumper guard ($125) and wireless charging pad ($275). When you add in the $920 for destination and delivery, the MSRP sticker price of my tester vehicle was $32,065. Mazda offers the Mazda 3 Hatchback in seven different models, both front wheel and all wheel drive. The base model, front wheel drive hatchback has a base price of $23,700. My top of the line all wheel drive, premium package model is considerably more at a base price of $28,900. Mazda redesigned the 3 Hatchback last
SUBMITTED PHOTO
year – giving it a sleeker, more sculpted and modern look. That look carries over to the 2020 Mazda 3. The outside and inside of this model is quite attractive, lending itself to a more expensive look and feel. Powering both the sedan and hatchback models of the Mazda 3 is only one engine choice, a 2.5 liter, four cylinder “sky active” engine that produces 186 horsepower, at 186 pound feet of torque. This engine is coupled with a six-speed sport mode automatic transmission. I found the engine and transmission combination in this vehicle to be adequate. When in the “sport” gear selector mode, there was ample power to accelerate or pass aggressively. The all wheel drive, drive train and suspension were well meshed. This vehicle holds its own in any type of inclement weather. Besides, my issues with hopping into and out of the car, once I was settled into the front seat, there is ample room upfront. The back seat configuration on the hatchback is a bit snug. Moreover, many car critics have pointed out that the rear window visibility is not the greatest on the hatchback design for this model. I would have to agree. The interior design and ergonomics are solid on the Mazda 3. It lends itself to a
generally good quality feel. However, I was not overly thrilled with the center console infotainment system, featuring a 8.8-inch, non-touch screen, color display. The system is controlled by a center console master switch. While the phone, music system and navigation sync up rather easily, I found the system to be cumbersome to use for what should be some easy tasks. The AM/FM Bose premium audio system – which comes standard on this model – with 12 speakers put out some impressive surround sound music, though. The EPA fuel economy ratings for this vehicle come in at 27 miles per gallon overall – 32 mpg in highway driving and 24 in city driving. The EPA estimates that the annual fuel cost for driving this vehicle comes in at about $1,500, as it uses 3.7 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. This model Mazda 3 has not been rated yet for the government’s five star safety rating. If you choose the more expensive premium package model it comes loaded with a ton of neat standard features including: 18-inch alloy wheels; power driver seat with lumbar; heated front seats; leather seats with a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; rearview camera; rain sensing wipers; blue tooth; dual zone climate control and more. Many other car review critics have raved about the recently redesigned Mazda 3. The editors at Car and Driver give it high marks. And, U.S. News and World Report says: “The 2020 Mazda 3 sits near the top of our compact car rankings. Its engaging performance and upscale interior help it stand out in a highly competitive segment.”
