South River unveils banner marking 300th anniversary
S
etting off its year-long celebration to commemorate three centuries of existence, the South River Historical and Preservation Society unveiled the borough’s 300th anniversary banner. Members of the Borough Council, the South River Historical and Preservation Society and Mayor John Krenzel were present for the unveiling ceremony on June 26 in front of the South River Museum, located at 64-66 Main St. On the left, the banner boldly announces South River’s 300-year history, while the right provides the years, 1720-2020. At the center of the banner is the official logo for the borough’s 300th anniversary designed by Kevin LaScala, a trustee of the historical society, according to a prepared statement from the South River Historical and Preservation Society. Thanking them for their contribution towards the banner, Krenzel said the banner was sponsored by the South River Lion’s Club and thanked the members of the historical society for their help in coordinating upcoming events with the borough.
Krenzel said there will be a variety of different events to celebrate the borough’s 300th anniversary throughout the year; however, announcements will be made as the state mandates what events the borough to have events to be conducted, according to the statement. Public events to celebrate South River’s 300th anniversary are still being planned by the historical society in conjunction with the South River Cultural Arts and Heritage Commission, according to the statement. South River is thought to have been settled in 1720 when Hartshorne Willett settled on the bank of the South River. The borough has gone through several incarnations since that time. It started out as a small village, was designated a town by state law in 1870 and was finally incorporated as an independent borough in 1898. There were a variety of name changes along the way, Willettstown and Washington being the most often used, according to the statement. A webpage for the 300th anniversary
was created by the historical society. The site includes a timeline of South River history along with links to related resources; because the anniversary events planned for recent months could not be held the society established a YouTube channel. Stephanie Bartz, who is a trustee and long-time society board member, has been creating and posting videos about aspects of South River history. Subjects include the borough hall erected in 1908, which is now the Criminal Justice Building, the post office from its inception in 1824 to the opening of the current building in 1942, a virtual tour of the museum and graveyard, and memories of Memorial Day parades from years gone by. Further announcements will be made as plans are developed that will allow for events to be conducted safely and in accordance with the requirements set by the state, according to the statement. For more information about South River history and upcoming events, visit www.sites.rootsweb.com/~njsrhps/southriverboro300.html.
he ninth annual National Moth Week, which this week will be July 18-26, invites novice and experienced “moth-ers,” alike, to observe moths in their own backyards and contribute to scientific knowledge as part of one of the world’s largest citizen science projects. National Moth Week (NMW) offers the opportunity to learn about nighttime nature from the safety of backyards and gardens; porches, decks and balconies – anywhere a light can be turned on. Free registration of private and public moth-watching events is encouraged on the NMW website in order to show where moths are being observed around the world. Private street addresses are never displayed. All participants will receive a certificate of participation designed by Ecuadorean artist Belen Mena of the NMW team. “This year’s National Moth Week may not feature as many traditional public moth nights as in the past, but it’s still possible to observe and learn about moths while social distancing,” said Liti Haramaty, co-founder of National Moth Week, in a prepared statement. “All you need is an outdoor light source shining on a wall, door or white sheet. And don’t forget your camera.” In addition to using lights, moth-ers also can attract moths by coating tree trunks with a sticky, sweet mixture of fruit and stale beer. Searching for caterpillars and day-flying moths is a good activity for daytime. The NMW website offers tips on attracting moths. Participants are invited to contribute photos and data to NMW partner websites, as well as the NMW Flickr group, which now has over 100,000 moth photos from around the world. Moth observations submitted to iNaturalist.org, a site for sharing observations in the natural world, will be added to the NMW project on that site. Last year, over 27,000 moth observations were posted on iNaturalist. (Continued on page 9)

East Brunswick officers save man from falling over N.J. Turnpike bridge EAST BRUNSWICK – East Brunswick patrolmen Rob Thuring and Ryan Hensperger saved a man from falling over a New Jersey Turnpike bridge on June 21. Lt. Frank Sutter said the incident took place on Route 18 near Naricon Place at about 5:21 p.m. Police received 911 calls about a man who was walking in the road and then on the other side of the railing on the New Jersey Turnpike bridge. Arriving at the scene, Thuring said the
man was on the other side of the railing and that he lifted his shirt to wipe his face. Thuring said that is when he grabbed the man and Hensperger was also able to grab him as well, according to reports. Hensperger said once he grabbed the man, the man let go and his feet were dangling off the railing. After the man was saved by Thuring and Hensperger, he was taken to a hospital, according to Sutter.

Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office swears in first female prosecutor NEW BRUNSWICK – The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office swore in its first female prosecutor. Yolanda Ciccone, the former Assignment Judge of Somerset County, was sworn in to her new role on June 30 during a brief ceremony officiated by retired Judge and former Middlesex County Prosecutor Alan A. Rockoff. In June 2020, Gov. Phil Murphy nominated Ciccone, a Metuchen resident, to become the Prosecutor of Middlesex County. She was confirmed by the N.J. Senate on June 15, 2020, beginning a five-year term
as the county prosecutor, according to information provided by the MCPO. Ciccone follows Andrew C. Carey, who was appointed acting county prosecutor of Middlesex County in May 2013. He was formally nominated by then-Gov. Chris Christie and was confirmed as the county prosecutor by the N.J. Senate in June 2014, according to the statement. Christopher L.C. Kuberiet had been serving as the acting prosecutor. In 2019, Carey accepted an assignment with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. In September 2019, he
was sworn in as an assistant United States attorney assigned as Attorney-in-Charge for the Camden branch of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, according to the statement. Ciccone began her legal career in 1980 as a law clerk to the Hon. John E. Bachman J.S.C. and Hon. Theodore Appleby, J.S.C. In September 1981, Ciccone began working as an assistant prosecutor in Middlesex County. During her 10 years in the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, Ciccone had a number of different duties including chief of the Juvenile Division, advisor to the

Narcotics and Gambling Task Force, oversaw the Hate Crimes Task Force and negotiated memorandums of understanding with 23 of the Middlesex County school districts, according to the statement. Yolanda Ciccone In October 1991 Gov. Jim Florio nominated Ciccone to the Superior Court, Middlesex County. During her tenure as a superior court judge, Ciccone served in the Family, Criminal and Civil Divisions. She was the presiding judge of the Civil Division from 2005 to 2006. In September 2006, Chief Justice Deborah Poritz selected Ciccone as assignment judge of Vicinage 13 compromising Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties, according to the statement. Ciccone earned her law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law in Newark and is a graduate of Douglass College at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Following her being sworn into office, Ciccone swore in assistant prosecutors, detectives, and staff who work in the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office via a virtual ceremony. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office oversees 26 municipal and university/college police departments as well as the county Sheriff’s Department and is amongst the busiest in the state. The office handles more than 6,500 criminal complaints annually, has a budget of $20.7 million and employs just over 200 people, according to the statement.

Residents file petitions to create new clean energy programs
F
ood & Water Action and residents from Edison and East Brunswick submitted more than 3,000 petitions calling on the councils in both towns to create a municipal energy aggregation program that would deliver 100% clean, renewable electricity by the year 2030. The ordinance calls for the creation of an energy aggregation program, which allows municipalities to purchase energy at discounted bulk rates, and to set guidelines about the sources of electricity used by township residents, according to informa-
tion provided by Food & Water Action. “I support Edison implementing community choice aggregation for clean energy because it means we can use the power of bulk purchasing to achieve 100% renewable energy for our community at discounted prices, said John Hsu, one of the petitioners who helped launch the initiative in Edison, according to the statement. The program would be established in accordance with the Government Energy Aggregation Act, a state law enabling municipalities to set up these bulk purchasing

arrangements. Under the Faulkner Act, residents of some municipalities can directly petition local governments to consider a specific ordinance. Once presented with an ordinance, a governing body can either pass the ordinance as presented, or put the question before voters. “While the federal government is doing so little to protect our environment, we must take the initiative here in East Brunswick, said Dan Ulloa, one of the East Brunswick petitioners, according to the statement. The efforts in Edison and East Brunswick mirror the successful campaign in New Brunswick, which led to the creation of the first-of-its-kind 100% renewable energy aggregation program in New Jersey. A similar program was also launched in Piscataway this week, after residents voted in the November 2019 election to approve
the creation of a 100% renewable municipal energy program. Food & Water Action organizers were instrumental in both petition-gathering efforts, teaming up with residents to go doorto-door to generate support and collect signatures. “The global health pandemic brings new urgency to the work of cleaning up air pollution and protecting a health environment in our New Jersey communities. Creating a clean energy aggregation program is a simple, effective step that municipalities can take right now, Food & Water Action New Jersey State Director Matthew Smith said in the statement. “This is a winwin scenario: Residents pay discounted rates for clean, renewable electricity, and they will be cleaning up harmful air pollution and reducing our dependence on climate destroying fossil fuels, all at the same time.

Moth Week (Continued from page 1)
Since it was established in 2012, NMW has inspired thousands of public and private moth-watching and educational events around the world in over 80 countries and all 50 U.S. states, according to the statement. Sites have included national parks and monuments, museums and local recreation areas, private backyards and front porches – wherever there’s a light and a place for them to land. Last year, hundreds of National Moth Week events were registered around the world, including all 50 states and 47 countries. “Moth diversity is astonishing and with a little effort it’s amazing what can be found in a backyard or local park,” NMW co-founder David Moskowitz said in the statement. “Some of my most exciting moth adventures have been in my own small backyard. Exploring yours is sure to yield moth treasures that are just waiting to be found.” National Moth Week was founded by the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to environmental education and conservation. It is now one of the most widespread citizen science projects in the world. It is coordinated by volunteers in New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Washington State, Ecuador, India and Hong Kong. merica’s Pastime will be back in action on the diamond this summer with the “Last Dance World Series,” and high school baseball programs throughout the Greater Middlesex Conference will be taking full advantage of the opportunity to play baseball. The statewide tournament that will feature 222 teams and is scheduled to begin on July 14 was the brainchild of Metuchen’s Saint Joseph High School baseball Coach and Athletic Director Mike Murray. Murray gives a lot of credit to baseball programs and people in the baseball community across the state for helping jump start the tournament. There is still work to be done to fine tune player safety measures for the tournament, Murray admits, but the coach is excited to bring some normalcy back to people’s lives with baseball this summer. “First and foremost, our goal is to do this tournament safely and provide players with a close to normal experience of playing baseball,” Murray said. “Feeling normal is what we need right now. A lot of parents have told me that they are excited to sit in a lawn chair again and watch their kids play baseball. Feels good to see all the kids in the state looking forward to playing in the tournament.” Murray’s St. Joseph squad is the host of the 5A-Metuchen Regional Region and the No. 1 seed in the region that is based in the South Jersey Bracket. The No. 2 seed is Sayreville War Memorial High School, followed by No. 3 seed John F. Kennedy Memorial High School and No. 4 seed Wardlaw Rams, from Woodbridge and Edison, respectively. It’s an eight-team bracket in total with Edison High School standing as the No. 1 seed and hosting the 5B-Edison Regional Region. Rival John P. Steven High School from Edison is the No. 2 seed. Carteret High School serves as the No. 3 seed and South River High School rounds out the region at No. 4. Each team in the tournament will play at least three games during the first round of pool play. In an eight-team bracket, the two teams that are 2-0 after the first two games of pool play will square off in a contest to advance to the single elimination round of 32. The

All games will be played at Community Park in North Brunswick. According to Nugent, Old Bridge will have around 25 players on its roster and all six seniors will be participating in the tournament. Nugent said it felt unreal to practice with his teammates for the first time on June 30 and that everything felt the same since the last time they practiced. The team also is getting a lot of support from the Old Bridge community with the Sayre Woods South Little League allowing the players to workout on their fields. “Old Bridge High School and the Old Bridge community have a great relationship,” Nugent said. “We give back a lot to the community and they do the same for us.” South Brunswick Coach C.J. Hendricks is looking forward to seeing his players for the first time on July 13 when the NJSIAA will allow high school coaches to conduct workouts with players. Hendricks said he can’t wait to hit infield and outfield practice to his players one last time. Until then, Hendricks’ father, Carlos, is holding practices for the team as they prepare to put a good product on the field for the tournament. “They’re happy to be back on the field and excited to play baseball again,” Hendricks said. South Brunswick will have around 18 players on its roster and all 10 seniors from this year’s squad will be participating in the tournament. Hendricks admits that the disappointment he saw his players feel with the spring season being canceled was the toughest thing he has dealt with in his 15 years of coaching high school baseball. The coach is excited that his squad, especially his seniors, are getting the opportunity to play in the Last Dance World Series. Win or lose, Hendricks’ message to his squad for the tournament is to play the best they can and to have fun with the opportunity of playing together again. “It’s the best we can do under these circumstances,” Hendricks said. “It’s a great way to give the seniors some closure and help them end their high school careers in a nice way.” East Brunswick High School will compete in the tournament and is the No. 3 seed in the 2A-Lincroft Regional Region.

Why have our customers chosen us over another window company? 1. Fibrex® Material Our Fibrex material was researched by Andersen en for 30 years before it was installed in even one home. Our Fibrex material is twice as strong as vinyl. 2. Unique Look Our window has the elegant look and strength of a wood window, but our Fibrex material doesn’t demand the same maintenance of wood.* 3. Accountability There’s no frustrating “middle man” to deal with. We manage the entire process–from building to installation to the warranty–on windows and patio doors.
