Banners honor Spotswood, Milltown, Helmetta graduates By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

ith a large waterproof banner containing photos of Spotswood High School’s graduating seniors, resident Diane Wells spoke about how she helped lead an initiative to honor this year’s 12th graders. “I follow a group on Facebook that was created after COVID-19 started by the Class of 2020 parents, and it’s not just popular like nationwide,” Wells said. “So, I started following that page someone invited me to and one of the towns in Oklahoma had done these banners, and they had put them all up and down their Main Street on lamp posts, and they looked really nice.
So, I was like, why can’t we do that? So a couple of parents and I posted it on our own Spotswood Class of 2020 page saying ‘Hey Spotswood, Milltown and Helmetta, let’s do this.’ “ A resident for 26 years, Wells said she, along with other fellow parents from the Spotswood/Milltown Banner Project, teamed up to get banners hung to honor the Class of 2020. Beginning her initiative on April 20, Wells said making sure the banner was made out of tough material was important because it had to be weather worthy to withstand the sun, rain and wind. “It is a high quality vinyl [and] it also had to print nicely because at the end of the day we don’t want a crummy picture,
you know, of the kids up there, it had to be good quality,” Wells said. “I was fortunate enough to meet up with a few people that were able to help get this going on. One of them was the guy that did the printing, he was from King Kong Printing located in Matawan, and they did the banners for us and gave us a really good price on it because we ordered so many.” In order to pay for the banners, Wells said she was able to raise about $4,500. From Kong Kong Printing she ordered 142 banners, each including senior portraits of the out-of-district students. “If a student were a resident of Spotswood or Milltown, we made sure (Continued on page xx)
4-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries after drowning in a pool at a residence on the Fourth of July. At 5:13 p.m. July 4, officers from the East Brunswick Police Department responded to a home on Sandalwood Drive for a 4-year-old drowning victim, according to police. While officers were responding, police dispatch advised that the child was out of the pool, but unresponsive. Upon the officers’ arrival, CPR was being performed on the child by the homeowner, according to police. Officers, along with Robert Wood Johnson EMS personnel, took over CPR and transported the youngster to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with a police escort. The investigation revealed a child fell into the pool during a kindergarten graduation party, according to police. When adults realized he was missing, a family member observed him at the bottom of the in-ground pool. An initial investigation determined the incident was captured on video and was not suspicious, according to police. The child remained on life support, but was pronounced deceased on July 5, according to police. On June 22, Bharat Patel, 62, his daughter-in-law Nisha Patel, 33, and her daughter, 8, drowned in a pool at a home on Clearview Road in East Brunswick. An investigation determined the family members did not know how to swim and died trying to save the child. On Jan. 22, Yousef Khela, 13, died after falling into an icy pond at the municipal complex in East Brunswick. There were no further updates as of press time.

Milltown holds virtual ‘pomp and circumstance’ festivities to celebrate Fourth of July By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
O
n a normal Fourth of July, David Potter would be up and out the door at 5 a.m. to set up the route for the Milltown Fourth of July parade, a tradition since the 1920s. This year, Potter, president of the Milltown Fourth of July Committee, was sitting in his backyard awaiting cues from Russ Einbinder, who streamed a full day of activities and events live on Facebook. Activities began at 9 a.m. with a virtual flag raising with Boy Scout Troop 33. Rosie Monaghan sang the national anthem and Mayor Trina Mehr wished everyone a Happy Fourth of July. “The Milltown Fourth of July Committee works hard all year,” Mehr said. “This year, they continue to do so much work to plan other activities because of the COVID-19 crisis. All of us here in town really appreciate [the hard work.]” In May, Potter, in a letter to the mayor and Borough Council, said it was in the committee’s “best interest of the health and public safety” to cancel the one-mile fun run and 5K sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, the parade, the park festivities and the fireworks. For two months Potter and the committee of 10 members came together to plan socially distanced activities and events around the town to continue the borough’s tradition to celebrate the nation’s birthday. “It actually was harder to plan this year,” he said. “I did get to sleep in, I’m usually up at 5 a.m. … this year I started in my backyard.”
Around 8:15 a.m., some 30 runners took part in the virtual 5K. The runners were met at the finish line by Garret Conger and his fiancée Elisa, who provided water, Gatorade, medals, trophies and breakfast sandwiches, in front of their decorated home on JF Kennedy Drive in red, white and blue. For nine years, Conger has decorated his home for the Fourth of July and for five years, he has provided medals and trophies for the runners. His home has been named Milltown’s “Most Patriotic House” in 2018 and 2019. “When I heard they were still running it virtually this year, we set up the table,” he said.

Potter said usually they hold an apple pie contest, but this year they decided to hold a pizza pie contest, which was sponsored by Dusals, Francesco Pizza and Maria’s Pizza and Subs. Thirteen people entered the contest. The top three winners – Maggie Young, Benny Motin and Dina Fleming – received gift certificates. Following the flag raising ceremony, Mr. Ray, a well-known children’s musician, held a concert from his home in Highland Park. At 11 a.m., the Milltown Marching Band performed and marched down Van Liew Avenue, which marks the beginning of the traditional parade. From noon to 3 p.m., the Milltown Fire Department and the Milltown Rescue Squad escorted Uncle Sam around town. And at 9 p.m., residents stepped outside their homes to make some noise and were

treated with a light display. The committee rented skytracker lights from Miller’s Rentals, which was set up at Borough Park. Potter said local businesses, Party Bliss and Total Party Balloon, provided decorations and Uncle Sam for the virtual events around the borough. Many local businesses and residents decorated their homes in red, white and blue. Former Councilman George Murray and other volunteers were instrumental in providing a red, white and blue Milltown sign, which is floating in Mill Pond. A local car wash provided barrels for the sign to float on. All the activities and events will be aired on Channel 15 and posted on Facebook and YouTube. South River mayor updates residents on water status
By VASHTI HARRIS
Staff Writer
SOUTH RIVER – South River’s water treatment plant has been reconnected after months of testing and upgrades. On June 12, 2019, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal charged Robert Baker, 56, of Mine Hill, the licensed operator for the South River Water Department, with submitting false water samples and records to a laboratory that tests samples for coliform bacteria for the New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), according to previous reports. Mayor John Krenzel said Baker worked for the water department for nine years. On Jan. 17, Baker pleaded guilty to submitting false water samples and records to a lab that tests such samples for the DEP. Once Baker was charged, the Borough Council approved bond ordinances to finance various improvements for the borough’s water treatment plant and water wells. The borough also continued to provide water samples to the DEP.

In early June, the borough’s Department of Public Works announced that the water treatment plant was put back online. “The first one is the case of the discolored water. Trying to figure out why some people have discolored water and some do not has been a perplexing problem. Recently, a councilman complained of discolored water yet no one around him had a problem and he is not alone. One or two houses on a street will have a problem but no one else on the street complains,” Krenzel said. “The best that we can ascertain is that ‘micro-scourings’ are occurring throughout the system, because of the large water use, and I do mean large, the swiftness of the water moving through the pipes acts like a hydrant flushing, only on a smaller scale. South River has never experienced a situation like it finds itself,” Krenzel said. Krenzel said with a large number of people at home, also watering their lawns and installing new swimming pools, the amount of water South River is consuming is unprecedented. “We have had days in which we have used over a million gallons of water, in a day. Normally, consumption is hundreds of thousands of gallons less,” Krenzel said. “What we need is rain. If a steady rain is not forthcoming, the state will be declaring a drought. Even before that, there may be restrictions put into place.” Krenzel said the plan is to keep upgrading the water treatment plant and plan for a hydrant flushing program. The flushing program will begin after more fire hydrants are repaired and/or replaced. “As to the second talk of the town, [the first week of July] the estimated tax bills
are going out. Many have already received them. The town and the Board of Education have struck their tax rates, [which] means it is known how much money is going to be raised and how much the taxes must go up to get that amount,” Krenzel said. “The county has not set its tax rate so the county’s bill is estimated. The bill you receive will be fairly close to what the amount is if the state gives the aid it has promised South River.” Given the shutdown, Krenzel said that aid may not be forthcoming. Borough officials will know once the state budget is finalized. “What is important to note is that the bill you receive contains the tax increase for the three entities: town, school and county. What you see is the bill based on the new revaluation. This means that you will officially know whether your taxes are going up or down. I know a family whose tax bill went down even though the increases in taxes are in the bill. Lucky them,” Krenzel said. “My taxes went up not only because of the tax increase but also because of my increased revaluation. Most will either stay the same in their payments or pay less. About 40% will see a rise.” Krenzel said it is expected that for the fourth quarter, the Nov. 1 payment, residents will receive a normal-looking bill. “Please respond to your census forms. South River needs all of its residents counted and if life is becoming a drag, happy days are ahead, I heard a SiriusXM commercial for the Hallmark Christmas Channel. Can’t wait,” Krenzel said.

East Brunswick offers contactless parking payments for commuters EAST BRUNSWICK – The Township of East Brunswick will begin to provide contactless parking payments at more than 1,000 spaces in commuter lots using the ParkMobile app. The township has entered into a contract with ParkMobile, a provider of smart parking and mobility solutions in the United States. Amid the COVID-19 crisis, many town leaders are encouraging residents to use the app instead of the physical pay station to prevent the spread of the virus, according to a prepared statement from ParkMobile LLC. ParkMobile is a free app available for iPhone and Android devices. To pay for parking with the ParkMobile app, a user enters the zone number posted on the stickers and signs in the lot, according to the statement. The user then selects the amount of time needed and touches the “start parking” button to begin the session. Commuter lots in East Brunswick require a flat rate for daily parking.
“East Brunswick is excited to announce this new partnership with ParkMobile,” Mayor Brad Cohen said in a prepared statement. “By offering a contactless payment option at our commuter lots, we can ensure the safety of our residents, visitors and township personnel during the current health situation.” There are almost 1.3 million users of the app in New Jersey cities including Newark, Hoboken, New Brunswick, Jersey City, Asbury Park, Ocean City, Wildwood and Passaic, according to the statement. Beyond New Jersey, the app can be used in 400 cities across the U.S. and is widely available along the Northeast corridor from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia, to New York City, according to the statement. “ParkMobile welcomes East Brunswick to our growing network in New Jersey,” ParkMobile CEO Jon Ziglar said in the statement. “We have a large base of users in the state, making it easy for all New Jersey residents to use one app for contact-

M
ost fall semester classes at Middlesex County College (MCC) in Edison will run remotely. Mark McCormick, MCC president, said the decision is in efforts to allow students to continue their education “while mitigating the risks of exposure to COVID-19.” “We want to ensure that students receive the education they need and deserve while at the same time protecting their health and safety,” McCormick said in a statement provided by the college. “We anticipate a 90/10 percent split, with about 90% of classes offered online and 10% on campus.” Linda Scherr, vice president for Academic Affairs, said MCC is offering classes in different formats to provide flexibility for students. “The formats give students choices about their learning, while emphasizing health and safety practices to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” she said in the statement. Many of the courses will be converted into what the college is calling “Remote Live,” which are classes held at a scheduled day and time using video conferencing. Students interact with the professor and fellow students in real time, although some sections may include assignments for students to complete on their own instead of meeting for every scheduled class session. “The second half of our spring semester was conducted using Remote Live, and it was very successful,” McCormick said. Remote Live was implemented in March due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The spring semester concluded online and the MCC’s 53rd commencement was held virtually. Traditional online courses will also be offered. The student works when it is convenient, and completes assignments by the due date. There are no required weekly
meeting times and course materials and assignments are submitted online. “This mode is a good option for students who prefer a flexible schedule and have effective time management skills,” McCormick said. Some programs – such as nursing, dental hygiene, fine arts, radiography, engineering and culinary arts – include courses that require in-person instruction and those courses will be offered in a hybrid format, with about half of the sessions online or Remote Live and half in person. “All on-campus instruction will adhere to strict health and safety protocols in compliance with state and local guidance,” McCormick said. For all fall courses, students will need access to a computer or tablet with microphone and the internet. For students without access to a computer, MCC has laptops available for loan. For more information, email student_ services@middlesexcc.edu for details.

that they had a banner to represent them at the Class of 2020, as well as in their specific school colors,” Wells said. People and organizations that donated to help pay for the banner, Wells said, included: Nick Legakis and the Spotswood Education Foundation, Adam Sabatino and the Spotswood Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA), Chief of Police Michael Zarro and the Spotswood Community Policing Fund, Milltown PBA, Spotswood Mayor Edward Seely, Spotswood Councilman Charles Spicuzzo, Jackie Palmer, Bronson and Guthlein Funeral Home located in Milltown, and American Freight. “Our big dollar donors were the Spotswood Education Foundation, as well as the Spotswood Police Department,” Wells said. “Between the two of them, it was pretty much a done deal. When I got their commitments I knew that I was going to be able to do it.” After speaking with the school district, Wells said two banners were hung from early June to July 10. The first banner was placed in front of the borough’s municipal building and police station, located at 77 Summerhill Road in Spotswood.
Wells said Bronson and Guthlein Funeral Home Owner John McNamara donated all of the supplies that included lumber, hardware, the screws and his time to come to Spotswood and Milltown to help them build the structures that the banners were placed on. Using his landscape equipment, Wells said George Regan from CNG Landscaping in Milltown helped them put the poles in the ground, and was there every single day to help build the structures for the banners. When trying to find a place to hang up the second banner in Milltown, Wells said American Legion Joyce Kilmer Post 25 Commander Ron Dixon allowed her to hang the banner at the legion’s building, located at 4 JFKennedy Dr. in Milltown. Wells said thanks to McNamara’s, Regan’s and Dixon’s physical assists, the banners were completed. “In addition to giving us the space to use at the American Legion property, Dixon also had no problem grabbing a drill and helping us move wood and building these things. … It’s great to get the money – if you have the money you can purchase something – but if you don’t have someone behind you to help you build it, then nothing matters,” Wells said. “It was really a combination of having the support financially, and then having the support to do

that and actually get these things anchored and hung to where they were going to be weatherproof and all those other things.” Despite it being a lot of fun getting the banners hung, Wells said she had to get parental permission to use each student’s photo for the banner. “There were a lot of permissions that had to be given. We had to get permission [because] legally I couldn’t just post someone’s picture,” Wells said. “I had to have parental permission, I had to get their photo, I had to have the right to use that photo. So it was a lot as far as legally that I had to go through to make sure that we could do it and honor the kids.” Seeing Gov. Phil Murphy continue to issue social distance restrictions, Wells said she is glad she was able to get the banners for the graduating students. “I have my daughter graduating from high school, and one of my other daughters graduated from college with a master’s degree, and she didn’t get anything. … Personally, it’s been heartbreaking for me to watch my kids go through that,” Wells said. “On a personal note, it’s been sad for me, but I’m not alone in this we have 165 graduating seniors. There are 165 moms and dads feeling bad for their kids and all of these rites of passage things that they’re really missing out on. “Obviously we don’t want people get-

hen one strives to stand out – like going out on the limb with a way different style – there always stands the chance that the result will be a “you either love it, or hate it” reaction. Pink hair. Blue hair. Purple hair. Maybe, I’m old fashioned, but something about it just doesn’t look right to me. When the folks at Japanese car importer Toyota began toying with the idea of the crossover SUV CH-R model a few years Peter Perrotta back, it began as a very edgy looking and sculpted concept car. A lot of these types of cars never make it to the mass market production line. But, Toyota went out on the limb in 2018 and introduced the C-HR crossover as a worldwide, mass market production car. The CH-Rs that are sold in the United States are actually made in Turkey. To be honest, I had never even heard of
this model until the publicist from Toyota scheduled me for a one week test drive for review recently. When I told my brother, who sells Toyota’s in Minnesota, that I was going to be test driving one he said, “You’re going to hate it.” Well, after one week behind the wheel of the 2020 Toyota CH-R Limited recently, I must confess, I didn’t hate it. I kind of liked it, with some reservations. First off, before I get into all the technical details, being the journalist that I am, I rushed to research just why this compact crossover is called the CH-R. The answer is a bit confusing, but here goes. It stands for Compact High Rider, Cross Hatch Run-about or Coupe High Rider. At first glance, the exterior of this vehicle looks like a very snazzy, sculpted flying wedge with the back end of the car sitting up noticeably higher than the front end. Hence, all those different CH-R names. In it’s review, Car and Driver gave the CH-R high marks for what it termed its “look at me” styling “cheeky interior design” and “plenty of standard features”. In fact, it is a stylish looking cross over SUV, the smallest Toyota offers in its lineup.

In a very edgy design feature, the handles for the rear doors of this compact SUV are located at the top of the windows. When I first attempted to open one of the back doors, it threw me for a loop for a few seconds. I had never seen a design like this. But, at the end of the day, for this vehicle that design fits and works. The front seat cockpit and passenger seat ergonomics are superior, nicely designed and comfortable. The back seat, on the other hand, is a bit cramped. The sticking points – and issues most car reviewers have knocked it for – is the fact that this vehicle is not offered in a fourwheel-drive drive train and only comes with a somewhat inadequate 2.0 liter, four cylinder engine that puts out a modest 144 horsepower. Quite frankly, this car is crying out for a turbo boost engine so that it can get a little more giddy up than the 0 to 60 in 11 seconds performance. The 2.0 liter engine is coupled with the ever popular CVT (continuously variable transmission). These transmissions don’t shift gears, using one continuous gear mode instead. When you stomp on the accelerator, for quick passes or entrance ramp acceleration, the engine just sort of sits there and whines. When I asked my brother if they sell a lot of these CH-Rs in Minnesota he said that the fact that it isn’t offered with a fourwheel-drive option is a major drawback, especially in a snowy state. Whether or not Toyota has any plans to add a bit more power and a four-wheeldrive option remains to be seen. On the positive side of that, the 2.0 liter engine is fuel efficient. The EPA Department of Transportation fuel economy ratings for this car come in at an impressive 29 miles per gallon average – with 31 MPG on the highway and 27 in city driving. The EPA estimates that the average an-

In the side crash test, it got five stars for both the front seat and rear seat tests. And, on the rollover test it got four stars. The all important these days, infotainment system in this car is above average. It features an 8-inch touchscreen with six speakers. The audio system is average. However, the functionality of the infotainment system is good. It is fairly easy to sync up your phone, music (from a iPod) and connect to the Apple Car Play or Android Auto system for navigation. Overall, the CH-R is worth checking out if you are in the market for a compact crossover SUV. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is sure to attract enough consumers to make this an interesting consideration in this segment. Peter Perrotta’s On The Road column appears weekly. Why have our customers chosen us over another window company? 1. Fibrex® Material Our Fibrex material was researched by Andersen en for 30 years before it was installed in even one home. Our Fibrex material is twice as strong as vinyl. 2. Unique Look Our window has the elegant look and strength of a wood window, but our Fibrex material doesn’t demand the same maintenance of wood.* 3. Accountability There’s no frustrating “middle man” to deal with. We manage the entire process–from building to installation to the warranty–on windows and patio doors.
