South River superintendent discusses reopening plans By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer
W
ith South River Public Schools’ reopening plans still being perfected, Superintendent Sylvia Zircher offered the latest updates on what returning students will expect in September. Zircher said the school district has a District Task Force and school-based reopening teams working on its reopening plan. “We do have a District Task Force and it has been put in charge of implementing the guidelines that have been set by the New Jersey Department of Education’s (DOE) rollback framework. So basically the task force is going through that roadmap, and as we’re going through it, we are making decisions, as per those guidelines,” Zircher said. Along with her monthly report, Ziricher discussed the district’s reopening plan on July 23 during the Board of Education meeting via video conference. “Each of our schools has a schoolbased team. So what’s happening is the task force is making decisions and then the school-based teams are taking that information and seeing how that information pertains to their specific school environment,” Zircher said. On July 21, the district posted a slide presentation and YouTube video for parents to see the newest updates for the district’s reopening plan. Various cleaning methods will include: • daily cleaning using disinfectant wipes and spray cleaners • surfaces are cleaned throughout the course of the day • deep cleanings are taking place • hand sanitizer stations are being installed throughout the district • high traffic areas will be cleaned during the day and classrooms will be cleaned nightly Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks are being purchased for staff and students. Social distance markings and signs are being displayed throughout each
school, according to information provided in the slideshow. “So our task force has met twice with a meeting scheduled [July 28], and the school-based teams have also have all met,” Zircher said. “The teams are all made up of teachers, parents, administrators, and community members. Our task force also has [Board of Education Member] Anthony Razzano, as a board member on it, as well as, students at the high school, and our student board representative on the district task force.” The new “Ram Flip” schedule consists of splitting the student body in half and assigning them to the color maroon or gray, according to information provided in the slide presentation. Half of the students who will be assigned the color maroon will attend inperson learning on Monday and Tuesday, while the other half of the student body, assigned to the color gray, will learn virtually, according to information provided from the slide presentation. The other half of the students assigned the color gray will attend in-person learning on Thursday and Friday, according to information provided from the slide presentation. All students will have online learning on Wednesdays. Simultaneous virtual learning will take place when children are home. Schedules will be created alphabetically districtwide to ensure that all siblings have the same schedule. Siblings who have different last names will also receive the same schedule, according to the information provided from the slide presentation. “We’re moving along, like I said, on our decision making and as we put things in place, those items are going to be communicated to the public as quickly as we possibly can,” Zircher said. “I know that we received some feedback that families were happy to know at least what the schedule is going to look like. So that they can make some arrangements.” Zircher said the feedback the district (Continued on page 8)

Milltown reports elevated levels of lead
T
he Milltown Water Department found elevated levels of lead in drinking water in some homes/buildings in the community. The 90th percentile in Milltown was 21.3 ppb for the testing performed for the Jan. 1 through June 30 period. Lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and children, 6 years and younger. The action level for lead is based on a 90th percentile. This means that 10% of the samples collected must not exceed the action level of 15 parts per billion (ppb), according to information provided on July 29. Lead is a common metal found in the environment. Drinking water is one possible source of lead exposure. The main
source of lead exposure are lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust or soil. Running cold water for 15-30 seconds can help reduce exposure to lead in drinking water. Use cold water for cooking and preparing baby formula. Do not boil water to remove lead, according to the statement. Boiling water will not reduce lead levels in drinking water. Call the Milltown Water Department at 732-828-2100, ext. 136 or visit www. milltownnj.org/ for additional information including how to get water tested for lead. For more information on reducing lead exposure around a home/building and the health effects of lead, visit www.epa.gov/ lead or contact your health care provider.

ew Jersey Youth Soccer hosted a webinar presented by RWJBarnabas Health on July 10 to engage its member TOPSoccer programs. The state association used this opportunity to communicate about Return to Play guidelines, share best practices and highlight NJYS member benefits, according to a statement by NJ Youth Soccer. The webinar was led by Carol Cordiner, NJYS TOPSoccer chair; Evan Dabby, NJYS executive director; Rick Meana, NJYS director of coaching; Lou Mignone, NJYS Coaching Schools instructor; and Auke Wiersma, NJYS Coaching School instructor, former US Youth Soccer Region 1 TOPSoccer chair. “NJYS TOPSoccer clubs managing their programs during the COVID-19 pandemic are confronting new and unique operational challenges,” Meana said in the statement. “This webinar provided some much-needed guidance, tips and best practices for the administrators.” More than 30 individuals participated, representing many of the member TOPSoccer programs in New Jersey: Champions Soccer Club, Chatham United, Club Dreams, Cranford Soccer Club, East Brunswick Soccer Club, Franklin Township Soccer Club, Glen Rock Shooting Stars, Harrison Soccer Club, Howell Soccer Club, Maple Shade Soccer-Moorestown Red, Montclair United Soccer Club, Morris United, Mt. Laurel United Soccer, Oaklyn Soccer Club, Point Pleasant Soc-
cer Club, Roselle Park TOPSoccer, Teaneck Junior Soccer League, Toms River, Topedoes, Watchung Hills Soccer Club, West Morris Soccer Club and West Orange United Football Club. As part of the webinar, Doon Wintz of West Morris Soccer Club TOPSoccer shared details about TOPZoom, a live virtual alternative to the in-person TOPSoccer programs that were interrupted by COVID-19. Over 10 weeks from April through June 25, WMSC youth volunteers engaged with 20 special needs players over Zoom to keep the community and fun flowing, according to the statement. “It is encouraging to see how NJYS TOPSoccer has responded to COVID-19 obstacles and challenges by leading the way with helpful Return to Play suggestions and creative solutions such as TOPZoom that serve the special needs community,” Wintz said in the statement. Alex Hoberman, a student volunteer with NJ Youth Soccer this summer, assisted in preparing the webinar content. “I love soccer and could not think of a better program to support than TOPSoccer because it creates a welcoming environment of inclusion and community, regardless of an athlete’s ability or disability,” Hoberman, who plays with STA and is also on the varsity team at West Morris Central High School, said in the statement. illtown-based Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society has been selected to receive a generous donation from a 13-year-old Pennsylvanian who is supporting animal organizations across the country. The young animal lover, Avery Sontheimer, has organized a Facebook page and GoFundMe fundraiser, Avery’s Pawsitive Change, to support animal rescue organizations nationwide. Additionally, Avery has set up donation jars at businesses near her home to collect spare change. As Avery receives donations, she draws the names of 10 animal organizations each week to whom she sends Walmart gift cards, according to information provided by the rescue society. According to Erie News Now, Avery has dreams of becoming a veterinary technician and hopes to continue helping animals well into her adulthood, according to the statement. In addition to receiving a gift card donation, Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society also received a heartfelt letter from Avery: “Hi, my name is Avery and I’m thirteen years old. I started a project of donating gift cards to random animal shelters and you were one of the places I picked! I donate these gift cards because I know it will help. $5.00 is not much, but something is better than nothing and I know how donations can help and go a long way. Even a small donation could help with a small bag of food, treats, toys, or even cleaning supplies. “There are so many animals in this world that need help and cared for. There are also so many animals that get neglected. I am hoping this gift card will help a

little. I help out at our local animal clinic and someday I want to be a vet tech and hopefully own my own shelter. I’m thankful for people like you who run an animal shelter to help animals. You have a hard job every day and most times it’s overlooked by many people. I hope this brightens your day and know someone is thinking of you. You truly are some animals hero’s every day. So if you ever doubt your job, don’t because someone like me looks up to someone like you.” “We’re delighted and humbled to be the recipient of this young girl’s amazing generosity,” said Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society’s Development Director, Rebecca Smith, in the statement. “We look forward to sending Avery a heartfelt thank you card, and we named a very special cat after a special girl. Our adoptable cat, Avery, who is FIV-positive, was rescued from a shelter where she would have been considered difficult to adopt. With her new name with such a happy story behind it, we know she will be adopted quickly.” To donate to Avery’s Pawsitive Change, visit www.gofundme.com/f/ avery039s-pawsitive-change. professionals seeking to educate the golf community about the body/swing connection. Did you know that proper body mechanics can have a massive impact on your golf game? TPI utilizes evidencebased certification courses to educate golf professionals, medical practitioners, and fitness trainers with a deep, foundational understanding of how the body works during the game of golf. TPI describes the connection between the body and the golf swing as the Body-Swing Connection, and they feel that the connection is the key to improving your game. The results show that TPI’s method is very successful: 12 of the last 16 major championships were won by players advised by a TPI-certified expert. At ProFysio Physical Therapy, Dr. Erik Hums DPT, FAAOMPT, CSCS is a TPIcertified medical professional. Dr. Erik utilizes his extensive physical therapy education and love of golf to educate his patients about the ways in which body mechanics and fitness can improve their golf game, while reducing their risk of injury, improving mobility and stability, improving core strength and balance, and treatment of golf-related injuries. At a glance, it may sound like TPI experts are for professional golfers only, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. You don’t need to be competing in the Master’s Tournament to benefit from the vast knowledge of the Titleist Performance Institute. TPI is for casual weekend golfers and golf enthusiasts in general. Since the efficiency of the swing is unique to every golfer, advice from a TPI certified medical professional like Dr. Erik can enable you, the casual player, to use better fitness and biomechanics to play at the highest level of performance. Also, if you are currently injured or recovering from an injury a doctor of physical therapy that is TPI certified has the vast knowledge and expertise that is necessary to get you back to playing again. Performance training can revitalize your love of golf and keep you playing healthier for longer. T
he Township Council failed to vote on a proposed ordinance establishing a Government Energy Aggregation Program. Before the council failed the ordinance, Mayor Brad Cohen said he wanted to thank the petitioners and the Food and Water Watch members who came out and worked with the township’s professionals to help create the ordinance. “To have the town move quickly to reusable forms of energy, going forward with the township in a way that will not or should not cost any extra costs to residents, thank you, everybody, for working together to get us to this space,” Cohen said. The council failed to vote on the ordinance during the council on July 27 via video conference. “If there is no second on this ordinance then it will fail and you will have the ordinance as drafted by the proponents of the referendum on the ballot, which will likely result in the adoption of an ordinance much more strict than the ordinance that is on the table [on July 27],” Township Attorney Michael Baker said. This ordinance came about after a committee of petitioners comprised of Dorothy Li, Kathryn Scarbrough, Troy Shinbrot, Jean Mazza and Daniel Ulloa submitted an initiative petition on June 3. Township Clerk Nennette Perry notified the committee of petitioners that their petition had been reviewed and met the state law requirements on June 23, according to the council. The ordinance would have amended the municipal code, establishing a Community Energy Aggregation Program that creates an option for 100% regionally sourced renewables. The mayor is authorized to execute the execution of an Electric Distribution Aggregation Agreement in a form acceptable to the township with PSE&G and/or JCP&L. “While I support the ordinance and I would be part of the program, I can’t support anything that is an opt out program, where I don’t believe that it’s the governing body’s decision to make [and] to put the entire township in it. I would be much more supportive of it being on the ballot and letting the voters decide. It’s my opinion on it,” Councilman James Wendell said. Baker said if the council would have adopted the revised ordinance, then the ordinance would have not needed to go on the ballot.
Church will reopen its thrift shop, begin its community suppers again, and hold its first outdoor mass in August, after being closed for months due to COVID-19. St. Peter’s reopened its popular thrift shop on Aug. 1. The thrift shop has been closed since early March but now has more space, more inventory and a sale on all summer clothing. While supplies last, every piece of summer clothing will be sold for $1, according to a prepared statement The thrift shop also sells items such as footwear, household items, antique china, costume jewelry, toys and bikes, according to the statement.
during hours of operation only. All shoppers, volunteers and donors will be required to wear masks and follow health and safety protocols, according to the statement. One hundred percent of thrift shop revenues support the ministry of St. Peter’s. This will be followed by the return of St. Peter’s weekly Wednesday night community suppers, which will now be takeout only, according to the statement. All are welcome to drive up, bike over or stop by for a homemade meal that will be delivered curbside pick-up starting at 6 p.m. The first supper will be held on Aug. 5.
Avenue. Pre-registration for the outdoor service is required, according to the statement. “We are blessed to be at a moment when we can safely go beyond Zoom to more fully serve the needs of our community and congregation,” St. Peter’s Rector, the Rev. Marshall Shelly, said in the statement. Pre-registration, which will be available on the St. Peter’s website beginning on Aug. 3, is required as physical distancing and other health and safety protocols, including wearing masks, will be closely followed, according to the statement. has received regarding the reopening plans so far has been split. “We have some families who really feel we should be back in school and a fulltime program, while others are very fearful about sending their children back to school. So it’s certainly something that’s very personal for families and just very indicative of what their own circumstances are,” Zircher said. “We’re doing our best to sort through all of that but what’s really the deciding factor and how we move forward, is what DOE and the governor’s office’s guidelines they are setting up for us.” On July 20, Gov. Phil Murphy announced that parents will be given the option to select an all-remote learning plan for their children if they do not want to send their youngsters for in-person education in the new academic year. Additional details regarding this option are expected to be forthcoming from the New Jersey Department of Education. Having to go completely virtual during the spring due to the COVID-19 crisis, Zircher said the district received feedback that students and parents were looking for more live instruction from the teachers. Zircher said teachers felt that they needed some support and training regarding technology and live instruction. “What we did this week was the administration team and I went to all different parts of the district [and] the different classrooms in the district. We used our teachers’ devices in the same type of places for teachers, and we started livestreaming practice lessons to see really what the tech-
nology looks like when we use the equipment.” Zircher said. “Then we started putting a guide together for teachers about what we noticed when the camera displayed the best image,S how the sound was the best, What type ofi color ink topped up the most on a screen,g what type of angle, [etc]. We needed to used all of those things because that is going to make a difference in making the streamt live lessons the best they can be,” she said. Zircher said the task force has had discussions about the district’s internet capabilities and needs in order to provide effective live stream lessons to the students starting in September. “We really felt that it’s a process that can work, and we feel that the teachers can teach the children sitting in-person live in the classrooms,” Zircher said. “While these children who are receiving instruction virtually can really capture the same lesson. Everybody stays on the same pace, the teachers don’t have double planning to do and you really feel like that it’s a process that can work.” Zircher said the district will put out some information to the public for some learning gaps that have occurred, especially since there are school closure and parents have communicated that as well. The district is setting up some mediation programs for the summer and identifying students based on multiple measures, including students who had difficult times signing on for virtual sessions. Brothers spend time with seniors at Greenwood House
T
his year, Greenwood House Senior Healthcare in Ewing Township was blessed with the arrival of an amazing group of young men and brothers, their family consisting of five brothers with two set of twins from Jackson. Chris Werthmuller was the first to join the activities department, then came Ryan and soon after Michael and Gregory. Ryan recently graduated from The College of New Jersey with his psychology degree, and will pursue his masters in social work at Rutgers University. Michael is attending The College of New Jersey majoring in finance and Gregory is attending Rowan University through the ROTC program. All three bound for future success. The brothers all between the ages of 19 and 23, first thought, “Could I build a relationship and relate to older people? but soon enough they found themselves looking forward to spending quality time with our residents, who very quickly became their friends. They do whatever it takes to assist with the enrichment programs at Greenwood House especially during the fight against COVID-19 and the very limited and restricted activities allowable for the residents. They don’t mind painting nails, listening to stories about the residents’ childhood and family, playing word games with Estelle, talking sports with Robert, and now busy arranging and setting up FaceTime, Zoom calls and family visits with social workers. From learning grief and now understanding to appreciate their youth, all three agree this experience has humbled them. , They shared one of the residents, Lucy, r always compliments Greg’s curly hair n

Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition.
