hen I was in high school, my mom brought me to this library for a project,” Melissa Kuzma, the new library director of the East Brunswick Public Library said in a prepared statement. “It was so much bigger and grander than my local library; I was so impressed that I still remember it more than 30 years later. Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I think that I’m now the director of that library.” The East Brunswick Public Library Board of Trustees announced at its Aug. 18 meeting that Kuzma was appointed library director. Board of Trustees President Deborah Cornavaca described Kuzma as bringing “a unique and divers skill set, combined with years of library experience. Cornavaca added, “She is a great hand-on leader, and she will add to the culture of excellence that we have at East Brunswick Public Library,” according to the statement.“The township is thrilled and exited to welcome Melissa Kuzma as the new library director of East Brunswick Public Library,” Mayor Brad Cohen said in the statement. “As mayor and a member of the Library Board of Trustees, I am sure that she will reach out to the greater East Brunswick community and enhance the quality of services, and programs provided in, what I believe, is the best public library in New Jersey.” “Melissa’s strong commitment to li-

braries will serve her well as we look to redefine the role of a library in ways that continue to keep it at the core of our 21st century East Brunswick community,” Cohen said in the statement. Kuzma first joined the East Brunswck Public Library as assistant director in 2016, but she has spent most of her career working in libraries, according to the statement. After graduating from Rutgers University with a degree in history, she worked at New York Public Library as a librarian trainee. “I just fell in love with it. I was always a library user and a big reader; my mom is also a librarian, so it’s kind of in my blood,” she said in the statement. Kuzma earned her Masters in Library Sciences at Rutgers University, and she worked at New York Public Library and West Orange Public Library as a librarian. Her career path eventually took her out of the library, working for companies that serve public, academic and corporate libraries as a project manager for Baker & Taylor and as a product manager for R. R. Bowker. “Working on that side of the information services industry really gave me an education on the business side of libraries,” Kuzma said in the statement. She also worked as the Summit Housing Authority’s deputy executive director.

Middlesex County College sees rise in number of high school students taking college courses By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

I

n an effort to prepare himself for Advanced Placement (AP) exams in calculus and physics, Avinash Kumar signed up for classes at Middlesex County College. It was the summer of 2017 before his sophomore year of high school. “At the time, my high school, the Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Technologies, did not offer many AP courses,” he said. “While this did not prevent me from

taking the AP exams, it did put me at a severe disadvantage when it came to preparing for the exams.” Kumar, of Edison, has joined a growing number of students who are taking advantage taking classes at Middlesex County College (MCC) while still in high school. “We’ve seen extensive growth over the past three years,” said Kimberlee Hooper, director of K-12 Partnerships at MCC. The number of high school students taking MCC classes has gone from just under 1,800 in 2017-18 to more than 3,100 in 2019-20 – a jump of almost 60%, Hooper

said. Hooper said she believes two major factors play are role in the growth. “First, school districts are organizing and promoting options for their students better, making sure they understand they have numerous post-high school choices,” she said. For example, some students would be best served by earning a certificate in a short amount of time, and then going into the workforce. For others, a two-year degree that leads to a job is most appropriate, and for others, a two-year degree and then

transferring to a four-year school is the right path, Hooper said. “That’s where we come in because of our flexibility and low cost,” she said, noting that is the second factor. “High school students can take a three or four credit class for $125, including tuition and fees. Parents love that they can save literally thousands of dollars by having their kids take classes that will transfer to a four-year institution.” Other advantages include allowing students to get used to the college experi(Continued on page 9)

Author’s new children’s book highlights friendship, togetherness during pandemic By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

tor, who is an up-and-coming illustrator who lives overseas. “I had to do lots of research and gather a team of consultants to support the publication of this book,” Darko said. “Once we had the most current information, we created a publishing company called Notes Publishers to help other authors who need guidance publishing their book.” Darko said the book can be purchased by visiting her publishing company’s website, Amazon or Kindle. Barnes and Noble is in the process of stocking it as well but had not been finalized as of press time, she said. For more information, about “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pan,” visit www. notespublishers.com.

T

elling a story of friendship, connection and hope, Gigi Darko’s new book “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pan” showcases positive experiences during the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. A South River resident for 15 years, Darko said she has been an educator for 20 years in New York City, and currently is an assistant principal at a school in Brooklyn, New York. “ ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pan’ is about two South River families who have found a way to connect during COVID-19,” Darko said. “There are three little girls on the block, two of them are African, the other is Italian, and they miss playing and sharing during this pandemic. Through a special pan, they have found a new way to share, connect and foster togetherness.” The book was published and released in August. Darko said the book raises several questions that are in every child’s mind: What is a pandemic? Why are all the adults afraid to go outside? What is a protest and why does it mean we aren’t together? “The book shares the sentiment that we have more in common than not. In childfriendly language, parents can begin to have a conversation about what is going on in our world with this book,” Darko said. “It is also a great book to read in schools at the beginning of the year so that children can have a conversation about their summer in a culturally responsive way.” Darko said she wrote the book because as a mother of two young girls, it broke her heart to tell them that they couldn’t go outside but she knew there were other creative things they could do to chase the blues away. “This pandemic has affected us all and I wanted to share how these three little girls found a way to share and bring unity in the neighborhood despite COVID-19, and also because of the protesting that has been going on,” Darko said. Darko said she got the idea to write her book in April after her daughter Gianna

asked her and her husband to bake an extra pan of cornbread for their neighbors. She said she wrote the book in a day. The process of getting it published took three months. “In our little part of the world, children do not see color. They see friendship, they see laughter, they see good food, and that is what they focus on,” Darko said. “I wrote the book because I wanted to remind our girls that there is always hope when we decide to be kind to each other. I wanted to give parents a way to start a dialogue with their little ones about what is going on in their world.” Darko said Ujaala Shahid is the illustra-

Spotswood ordinance will establish permit requirement for public events By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

SPOTSWOOD – The Borough Council has introduced an ordinance which, if adopted, will amend the municipal code requiring a permit and conditions for outdoor public events. The permits related to any type of parade, march, demonstration, motorcade, or show of any kind in or upon any street, park or other public places. Funeral and wedding processions, nor activities of a governmental agency acting within the proper scope of its function, will not need a permit. An application for a parade permit will be filed with the chief of police, fire department chief, director of EMS and director of Public Works on forms to be provided by the borough, according to the council. The council introduced and approved the ordinance on Aug. 17 during the council meeting via video conference. The second and final reading is scheduled for Sept. 9. Administrators will have 10 days to issue the permit based on no disruption to the movement of traffic; no need for an excessive number of police officers for security;

no interference with the proper movement of fire apparatus, ambulances and police vehicles; and no likelihood to cause injury to people or property or to promote disorderly conduct. If the borough administration does not issue the permit, the borough will promptly notify the applicant, who will have the right to request a reconsideration by the council, according to the council. The council may direct the borough administration to issue an alternative permit, authorizing the parade on a different date, time or location, provided that such an alternative permit, to be effective, must be accepted within three days by the applicant, according to the council. The borough will have the authority to revoke a parade permit or an alternative permit issued upon application of the standards, according to the council. This ordinance will take effect upon final passage and publication according to law. For more information, visit www. spotswoodboro.com/borough-council. COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD Middlesex County College will be offering an alternative educational program for children in grades 1-5 starting Sept. 8. The program, called “Think Tank,” is offered by the MCC Child Care Center. Since many of the local elementary schools have decided to go virtual, many working parents are struggling to assist their child with school and maintain a job. The children will bring classroom assignments and projects from their schools, and our staff will assist but not instruct with the assignments. Think Tank will follow all state and federal health protocols, including social distancing in the classroom and taking children’s temperatures daily. Staff members will wear masks, and it is highly recommended that children wear them too. Classes will be limited to 10 students in each. The children would be responsible for bringing their own tablet or laptop to the classroom, depending on district guidance. Parents will provide lunch for their child. In addition to the assignments from the school districts, students will participate in a nature walk and journaling, as well as various math, science and art projects. As some parents may work remotely

part of the week, MCC will offer options for three, four or five days per week. The fee is $40 per day, and capacity is limited. IMPROVEYOUR LAWN THIS FALL! We Can Help By Aerating & Overseeding!

Compacted soil and heavy thatch are the two biggest obstacles to a beautiful lawn. They tend to suffocate grass plants by preventing air, water, and nutrients from reaching the root zone. This means your lawn looks less than satisfactory in spite of adequate fertilization, water, and tender loving care! Aeration opens up the thatch and helps relieve compaction. It should be a regular part of your annual lawn maintenance program. Aeration is accomplished by the use of a machine equipped with cylinder-like spoons designed to penetrate and shatter the soil. Half inch diameter plugs of thatch and soil are actually pulled from the ground during this process. The plunging action of the spoons into the ground opens up the soil-allowing the grass plants to breathe and promoting deeper, healthier roots.

Major benefits of aeration...

• Increases air, water, and nutrient movement to the root zone • Intensifies decomposition of thatch • Helps relieve soil compaction • Stimulates new growth • Improves drainage • Provides a better environment for overseeding • Increases the effectiveness of applied fertifizers & control products • Incorporates organic matter into the soil • Increases tolerance to heat and cold

lowing five bids were received on Aug. 20: • VMG Group of Roselle submitted a bid total of $389,000; • Patwood Roofing Company of Little Falls submitted a bid total of $435,000; • NRM-Northeast Roof Maintenance of Perth Amboy submitted a bid total of $498,000; • Integrity Roofing Inc. of Rahway submitted a bid total of $532,340; • First Line GC of Astoria, New York, submitted a bid total of $640,000. The council approved the resolution on Aug. 24 during the council meeting via

video conference. Funds are available in the Senior Center Building Improvement Grant account, according to the council. Since March, immediately following the Senior Center’s closure due to the coronavirus pandemic, Director Danielle Micale said the township worked collaboratively on setting up virtual activities and programs. If the department is able to open the center in any capacity, Micale said it will be an abbreviated schedule with pre-registration required, as well as numerous safe-

ty protocols in place. “It is not likely that we will be able to resume previous center operations as we were prior to the pandemic, given the absence of a vaccine or viable treatment,” Micale said. “As we know, older adults are at greater risk and it is not safe to have our participants 60-plus congregate in large groups at this time considering that our daily attendance was at 150-plus per day.” For more information; or for assistance, support, counseling or just a friendly voice, call 732-390-6896 during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

students to get used to the college experience, the amount of work, and what is expected of them in a college setting. “It allows you to build up your academic profile and it helps solidify your career goals,” Hooper said. “You may think you are interested in one field, but after taking a class or two, decide that it’s not for you. It’s much better to find that out before you are too far along.” For Kumar, he gained experience in balancing the challenging workload of his MCC courses and his usual high school workload. “I pulled through largely due to my extremely supportive MCC professors and having developed a much stronger work ethic,” he said. In June, he graduated from the Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies. In August he graduated from Middlesex County College with an associate’s degree in math. He was named a 2020 National Merit Scholarship winner. This fall, Kumar will attend the New Jersey Institute of Technology on a full scholarship as part of the accelerated BS/ MS (bachelor’s and master’s degree) program at NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors

College. He is planning a career in information technology. “MCC served as a bridge between high school and NJIT,” he said. For high school students thinking about taking college courses during their high school years, Kumar suggests starting as early as possible and introducing “yourself to your professor and let them know about your situation either before or during the first class.” Hooper said another factor in the growth was outreach to charter and nonpublic schools in the area. MCC went from serving 22 schools in 2016 to 37 today. “In the past, many of the parents were focused on four-year schools, but we’ve been reaching out to explain why we’re a viable option,” she said. “It’s becoming a great resource for their students. They especially like hearing about MCC’s transfer agreements.” East Brunswick High School now offers a dual degree program with MCC, and three districts – Middlesex Borough, South Plainfield and Colonia – are developing the programs. “Most lean toward our liberal arts majors, but we also have students interested in science and business,” she said. “Essentially, they can set their own pathway. Our hope is that we’re part of the process for these students, whether it’s one course, or 10 courses, or a degree.”

“Our office was within walking distance of the library,” she said in the statement. “Once a week, I would make a point to go to the library. And as soon as I would walk in, I would have a feeling of comfort and of being ‘at home’ that I never felt anywhere else. I just knew I had to Melissa Kuzma go back; I missed working in libraries too much.” Kuzma was drawn to working at East Brunswick Public Library for many reasons. “East Brunswick is a diverse and inclusive community. The residents are very passionate about the town they call home, and they have always strongly supported their library. After working here for a few weeks, my husband noticed how happy I was at my new job. I realized how important working in a public library is to me,” she said in the statement. As assistant director, Kuzma planned several essential projects to improve the library and the services it offers. In 2017, she oversaw a renovation that included new flooring, public service desks, meeting rooms, cafe and Makerspace. She also developed a plan to implement a RFID library inventory management system, and a partnership with PSE&G to develop an energy and cost-efficient lighting system, according to the statement. Since being named the interim library director earlier this year, she has worked on preparing a submission for the New Jersey Library Construction Bond Act. “Right now, my main focus is on making sure the library is serving the community during the pandemic and working toward reopening safely for the public and for staff,” she said in the statement. “Hopefully, we will be awarded the construction bond grant, and the library can start working on our big renovation project. I will also be looking for opportunities for us to collaborate more with other township agencies and local businesses, as well as grant opportunities to help us fund new and exciting programs and services.” For a complete list of community events, visit www.centraljersey.com. ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2020 Mercedes Benz CLS450 4matic Coupe

W

hen you work selling Mercedes Benz automobiles for a living, it’s akin to being a kid in a candy store. Everywhere you look there’s plenty of luxuriously expensive cars to look at, feel and drive. More than 10 years ago, I exclusively sold Mercedes, working at one of the more prestigious dealerships in South Jersey. As part of our sales training – to get superior product knowledge – it was expected of us Peter Perrotta to drive each and every model in an effort to familiarize ourselves with that car so that when we took our clients on test drives we would be prepared for the multitude of questions customers have when considering whether or not to purchase that car. I must admit that even back then – and to this day – the Mercedes Benz CLS Coupe was one of my absolute favorite vehicles to drive. So I can honestly say that when I was scheduled to test drive and review the 2020 Mercedes Benz CLS450 4matic Coupe, it brought a broad smile to my face. It also revived a lot of memories from my car selling days at the dealership. After spending a week behind the wheel of this luxurious beauty of a car, my opinion hasn’t changed. It remains one of the finest production automobiles on the market – albeit it doesn’t come cheaply. Marketed from Mercedes as a four-door coupe, the CLS was originally designed in 2001 by noted designer Michael Fink. Fink was also noted for styling the first genera-

tion CLK, the C class sport coupe and the Maybach 57 and 62. The first thing one notices about the CLS Coupe is that it isn’t a coupe at all. While its named and badged as a coupe, it actually is a four-door vehicle that simply looks like a coupe due to its aggressively low stance and swooping and curved exterior design. In its overview for its review of this model for 2020, the folks at Car and Driver had this to say: “The CLS-class is a study in contradictions, but one thing that’s clear is its commitment to luxury and performance. It has four doors, yet Mercedes markets it as a coupe (you can thank its fastback styling for that choice).” Once you get past doing the double take of “Wow, this is a four-door coupe” and you slide yourself into the opulent cabin inside, your senses are immediately overwhelmed with the simply luxurious feel of this car. If I was forced to give an analogy, it’s much like trying on a pair of soft hand made Spanish leather boots. No one has to tell you that there’s quality in this product. You just feel it right away. The soft leather contour seats immediately grab you when you slip into this car and the swooping design and ergonomics are such that you almost become one with the car. All around you is luxury at this point – from the piano lacquer trim to the sleek and shiny infotainment screen and the old, but new styled dashboard clock, luxury abounds. After you get done gasping, and finally reach for that push button start, the smoothness and powerfulness of the ride of this beast doesn’t disappoint. This car is at once luxurious but at the same time, quick, extremely powerful and very athletic. I took my CLS tester on a bit of a road

trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where when you get out on the remote stretches of the Pennsylvania Turnpike the speed limit shoots up to 70 mph. Most motorists are cruising along at more than 80 mph out there. At 80 mph and upward, this car is barely breaking a sweat or even breathing hard. This car is most definitely a vehicle that one can push to high speeds and still feel extremely confident that you are in full control at all times. The 2020 CLS450 4matic Coupe is powered by a smooth 3.0 liter turbo charged inline six cylinder engine that is paired with a 48 volt hybrid assist system Mercedes calls EQ boost. This winning combination provides output of 362 horsepower and 369 pound feet of torque. The nine speed transmission works well with this EQ engine set up as well. In real time, on the road, driving there isn’t much this car can’t do. Of course, all of this fine elegance, power and athleticism doesn’t come cheap. There is a price to be paid. My tester model carried a base price of $72,450. However, after adding a whole host of expensive options and adding in the destination charge, the bottom line sticker price comes in at $99,125.

The car I drove for a week had an exterior color called “designo Arabian Gray” – which I wasn’t all that fond of. I would have preferred a simple black or white. The charge for the paint option on this car is a breath taking $4,900. Some of the other option packages on this car included: $5,500 for a designo interior styling package that includes soft nappa leather seats and a suede headliner; $2,250 for a driver assistance package; $1,320 for the contoured massaging front seats; $1,450 for a wireless charging system for your phone and a whole lot more. For a vehicle with this much power, the gas mileage is rather impressive. The EPA gas mileage rating on this car comes in at 26 miles per gallon overall – with 30 mpg in highway driving and 23 in city driving. The average estimated annual fuel cost for driving a CLS comes in at $1,900 per year as this car consumes about 3.9 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. This vehicle was not crash test rated by the government yet.

nspired by watching a clip on the news, Hillsborough-based Massage Envy owner Greg Robertson and his wife, Renee, took up the charge to do something during the public health crisis of COVID-19. “Renee and I were watching the news and a pizzeria donated 40 pizzas to a local hospital. We wanted to do something similar,” Robertson said at an event on Aug. 11 at his facility, according to information provided by Hillsborough Township. “We started out with our donation, then our therapists and employees, asking if

they were interested in donating time. It then expanded to our members. By the time all was said and done, here we are donating $78,000 worth of massages to health care workers at Saint Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick, Hunterdon Medical Center and Capital Health. “I then shared the concept with corporate and this donation project had become the “Hero” program and all Massage Envy locations in New Jersey will be participating. We are anticipating nearly $600,000 worth of massage to be collectively donated,” Robertson said, according to the

statement. “It’s a great way to give back to our heroes,” he said. On Aug. 11, Massage Envy Hillsborough was the backdrop for a ceremonial check presentation in which Hillsborough Township Mayor Doug Tomson and Administrator Anthony Ferrera were among the invited guests, along with the representatives from the three mentioned hospitals who were receiving the donations. Tomson thanked Robertson, his employees and members for their overwhelming generosity.

“It continues to impress me, the acts of kindness that our Hillsborough community has shown during this crisis,” Tomson said in the statement. Former New Jersey journalists launch wedding business built on storytelling

T

he number of postponed and canceled weddings due to COVID-19 and its associated lockdowns have caused stress, the loss of a wedding date, and uncertainty about when a couple might finally get married. But a new business led by two career storytellers is trying to help couples tie the knot. Storyteller Weddings, a Central Jersey/Jersey Shore-based wedding officiant, planning and music business, launched this month with the goal of organizing socially distant, budget-friendly ceremonies in a pinch, held via video chat or outdoors. Run by two musicians and former journalists, Storyteller Weddings relies on their interviewing, writing and management skills to deliver compelling, heartfelt wedding ceremonies uniquely suited for each couple, according to information provided by its founders. “We don’t want to see anyone unwillingly give up their wedding date,” cofounder Jack Murtha, who lives in Neptune and grew up in Brick, said in the statement. “We started Storyteller Weddings because we don’t want anyone’s story to go untold. And we don’t want couples to settle for anything less than their dream wedding— even if that dream looks a little different now.” The idea of Storyteller Weddings began several years ago when Murtha officiated fellow co-founder Tom Castles’ wedding. Over the years, the longtime friends took on tasks for other ceremonies. Eventually, they noticed one thing that far too many weddings had in common: The ceremonies were a bore, ridden with clichés and recy-

cled readings, according to the statement. “Wedding officiants belong to the gig economy, and that’s no knock on them,” Castles, a longtime Middlesex County resident said in the statement. “But we realized that strong, reported storytelling could make each ceremony more gripping and memorable for couples and their guests.” Castles and Murtha believe they’re the people to do it. Both New Jersey natives and Rutgers University graduates, they met almost 10 years ago while working for Greater Media Newspapers, the predecessor to Newspaper Media Group/ Packet Media LLC, covering Middlesex and Monmouth counties. They’ve covered much of the state, from New Brunswick to North Jersey, for digital media startups and enshrined newspapers and magazines. Murtha and Castles have also reported rich features on health care, technology and the media business, according to the statement. So far, Storyteller Weddings has performed one wedding in the COVID-19 era. The socially distant ceremony in Asbury Park consisted of 14 people. Storyteller Weddings wrote and led the ceremony and handled vendor relations, from photography to floristry, in just four days, according to the statement. Storyteller Weddings offers wedding officiant, planning and musical services, at the last minute or months in advance. Healthcare workers receive a 10% discount on all packages booked before Labor Day. Readers can visit www.storytellerweddingsnj.com or contact Jack Murtha at jmurtha7@gmail.com to book their nocost consultation.
