Middlesex County awards $3 million in Small Business Relief Grants
I

Congregation Etz Chaim in Monroe coordinates an annual High Holiday food drive for Jewish Family Services of Middlesex County. Laura Steinberg sorted the food collected by congregation members and delivered it to the Milltown office. To arrange a food drive or drop off, call 732-777-1940 or visit https://jfsmiddlesex.org/donate-form/ to make a donation.
n its first round of distribution, Middlesex County will award grants to 123 local businesses with a collective total of $3,039,716 from its CARES Act Small Business Relief Grant (MC-SBRG) program, which uses federal CARES Act funding. The grants serve to reimburse costs and loss of revenue associated with adapting business operations in a COVID-19 environment. Payments ranging from $410.97 to the maximum $30,000, with an average grant payment of $24,714, will be distributed to small businesses negatively impacted by COVID-19 starting Oct. 14, according to a statement provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. “The COVID-19 pandemic has had many unintended consequences, including for our small business communities. Not only have they been asked to limit or halt operations, but as we begin to reopen our economy, these cash-strapped businesses have been asked to adapt their businesses accordingly, making it even more difficult to make ends meet,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in
the statement. “These grants will certainly make a positive impact in our business community.” “The county’s commitment to its small business owners is fierce, and this first round of funding being distributed to 123 small businesses will make a huge difference in the lives of these businesses, the people they employ, and the communities they serve,” Freeholder Leslie Koppel, chair of the Finance Committee, said in the statement. Recipients of this first round of federal funding include restaurants, hair and nail salons, retail facilities, health care offices, manufacturing, construction, educational services, transportation companies and fitness studios. SBRG-CV grants will be awarded to the following number of businesses, by municipality: Carteret, four; Cranbury, one; Dunellen, four; East Brunswick, seven; Edison, 20; Highland Park, five; Jamesburg, one; Metuchen, 11; Middlesex Borough, four; Milltown, one; Monroe, five; New Brunswick, 13; North Brunswick, 11; Old Bridge, four; (Continued on page 17)

‘Joker’ turns from comedy to horror, writing latest thriller from his Princeton home By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor
I
James S. “Murr” Murray of “Impractical Jokers” fame releases newest book, “Don’t Move”
t may not be impossible to spot one of your favorite Tenderloins in the greater Princeton area. James S. “Murr” Murray, one of the stars of “Impractical Jokers” and “The Misery Index” on truTV, moved to Princeton last fall with his fiancee. “[We’re] absolutely loving it,” Murr said. “My fiancée and I are huge fans of Witherspoon Grill. If it were up to us, we would be there every night. “Having lived in New York City my entire life, it’s been wonderful to get out, finally breathe fresh air, and hike and kayak in the area. Staten Island was a great place to grow up – and that’s where I met my fellow Impractical Jokers – but Princeton is a great place to create our new life together and one day raise kids together.” Although Murr is best known for his comedic acts and stunts on the popular truTV practical joke show, he said he got his degree in writing from Georgetown University and always dreamed of becoming an author one day. “The success of ‘Impractical Jokers’ finally gave me the chance to start my alternate career as a novelist. Writing and improvisation are equally difficult, surprising and rewarding. But both represent my personality equally well. It’s all about affecting people in a fun, positive way through creativity of all kinds,” he said. Murr said he grew up reading and watching thrillers, “so it was kind of a natural progression for my writing to spring from that early interest.” He said he enjoys “The Meg” by Steve Alten, “The Andromeda Strain” by Michael Crichton, and is a personal fan of R.L. Stine and Brad Meltzer. They always say, “Write what you know” Murr said about delving into a career in horror writing. His newest thriller, “Don’t Move,” was released on Oct. 20 – after being written from his home in Princeton. He also recorded the audiobook from there. Megan Forrester has barely survived the unthinkable. Six months ago, she witnessed a horrific accident that killed her husband and son, and lives with the guilt of knowing she could have done more to save them. Now, Megan hopes to mend the pieces of her broken spirit by attending a local church group’s annual camping trip. But the church group members — riddled with dark secrets

Through the challenge that is the COVID-19 pandemic, Murr said he is trying to cope as best as possible. “Well, just like everyone else, it’s been tough adjusting to this new world. We’ve found some comfort in raising money for charities and frontline workers who are out there keeping people healthy. Melyssa and I are lucky that we’ve had all this extra time for planning our wedding! “As for the Jokers, we’ve been filming a new TV show from home called ‘Impractical Jokers: Dinner Party.’ And we finally went back to work filming ‘Impractical Jokers’ as well. Thankfully, because I missed my friends dearly,” he said. Murray is a writer, executive producer and actor, best known as “Murr” on the hit television show Impractical Jokers along with his comedy troupe, The Tenderloins. He has worked as the senior vice president of Development for NorthSouth Productions for over a decade and is the owner of Impractical Productions, LLC. He recently starred in Impractical Jokers: The Movie, and also appears in the television series The Misery Index on TBS. Halloween With Friends By Paul Hall
H
alloween is a holiday filled with tricks and treats. And the new film Hubie Halloween (streaming on Netflix) is no exception as the comedy set in modern-day Salem, Massachusetts, is ready to stop by and knock on your door. Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler) is a big kid. He still lives at home with his mom (June Squibb) in Salem. He has a crush on the prettiest girl from high school, Violet Valentine (Julie Bowen). Most important of all, he loves Halloween. The yard is fully decorated, he has a Halloween monitor sash and gives a speech at the local elementary school as the Official Volunteer Halloween Helper — at least that’s what his card says. But this town has never accepted Hubie, despite his best efforts. As Halloween approaches, Hubie finds himself in the middle of ghosts, goblins, an escaped mental patient, a werewolf and
a whole lot of craziness all around Salem. Can he survive the night against the variety of bullies who would see him harmed? First and foremost, this is a Sandler role you have seen a number of times before as it crosses so many of his characters from previous movies. Sandler’s Hubie conjures up visions of The Waterboy, Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, all rolled into one. To pull it off, he brings along so many of his friends that it’s hard to go through a scene without at least one or two popping in, from bigger stars like Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Squibb and Kevin James to players you remember by face, even if you don’t remember them by name. It feels like a big excuse for all of Sandler’s friends and characters from past movies to come together for a good time. And that is the part that works with Hubie Halloween; the atmosphere that is created feels like actors who genuinely wanted to be there.
Much of the material felt old and rehashed from what has worked in the past for Sandler and crew, but their genuine affection for each other warms over what could have been a totally stale trick instead of a mildly entertaining treat. Watch the credits for some fun outtakes of the cast and crew, and watch for appearances from Sandler regulars Tim Meadows, Dan Patrick, Maya Rudolph and Ben Stiller, among others. Plus if you look closely you might even be able to find Rob Schneider. Well, just wait for him, you can do it. A touching tribute also exists in the credits for the late Cameron Boyce, who played Sandler’s son in the Grown Ups franchise. Sandler showed off his acting chops
in Uncut Gems last year. Those who were introduced to his efforts there will probably be turned off by this effort. But longtime fans just may enjoy seeing all the characters again, despite the leftovers that pass for many of the jokes. Sandler is loyal, there is no doubt about it, and that is endearing to me as so many individuals today will easily leave their friends behind. It’s good to spend the holidays with friends. Paul’s Grade: C Hubie Halloween Rated PG-13 Stars: Adam Sandler, Julie Bowen, Kevin James Director: Steve Brill

Superintendent encourages COVID-19 testing ahead of winter sports
EAST BRUNSWICK – East Brunswick Superintendent of Schools Victor Valeski educated parents about the East Brunswick Public School District’s new voluntary coronavirus testing program. “The purpose of this program is to identify COVID-19 positives early and begin quarantining so we can protect the rest of our student and staff populations,” Valeski said in a prepared statement. “This is important as we continue to plan for greater frequency of face to face instruction for our hybrid learning model students early in
the second marking period.” Valeski said parental and staff permissions are being sought for the random COVID-19 testing program pilot with Middlesex County. Parents and guardians can access the forms for their children on Parent Access. A separate letter and form will be sent to the staff. “If you are an athletic parent this piece of information will be important to you. I am aware of rumors circulating throughout our community about the future of athletics in East Brunswick,” Valeski said in the
statement. “I have not made any recommendation to modify, alter, suspend or discontinue any athletic offering. There is no vote scheduled before the board and none can be taken without a recommendation from me.” Valeski said he monitors data that supports his decisions. As he stated in a recent media report about athletics, it is his responsibility to keep the Board of Education informed. As he has shared with the board, to date among 673 athletes, the school district has not had a single student athlete to

athlete COVID transmission, he said in the statement. “So why is this important? As we are about to begin winter sports season with indoor practices and competitions, adhering to our established athletic safety protocols, without exception, is the only way we can successfully continue our path to our full recovery of all school activities,” Valeski said in the statement. “Imagine it like this … our excellence in academics, athletics and arts surrounded by an atmosphere of trust in each other that we will continue the safety practices and rapid self-reporting we have established to protect everyone’s health,” Valeski said in the statement. “If we do that, we will continue to accomplish the improbable … because we are East Brunswick and that is what we do.” For more about the district’s pilot COVID-19 testing program, visit messages/ attachments/6ad7432fc1dad49974df9d3 90ceb07db/Voluntary_COVID-19_Testing10142020.pdf.

In FOX’s New Thriller ‘neXt,’ Star John Slattery Fights An A.I. System Gone Rogue By Ryan Berenz
N
etworked electronics can control everything from lightbulbs, doorbells and refrigerators to transportation systems and lifesaving medical equipment. But FOX’s new thriller neXt might have you thinking twice about inviting a smart device into your home. John Slattery (Mad Men) stars as Silicon Valley visionary Paul LeBlanc, whose company was developing a powerful artificial intelligence (AI) called neXt, which was capable of exponentially improving its own abilities. LeBlanc realized neXt’s potential dangers and pulled the plug on the project, leading to his brother (Ozark‘s Jason Butler Harner) ousting him from the company. The investigation into the mysterious death of a computer scientist who discovered that neXt’s code has leaked out into the world causes LeBlanc to join FBI cybercrime expert Shea Salazar (Fernanda Andrade) in the effort to stop neXt before it wreaks havoc on humanity. Creator, showrunner and executive producer Manny Coto thought up the idea for neXt after his son’s unusual
experience with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. “He was like, ‘My Alexa started talking to me at 3 a.m. out of the blue by itself for no reason.’ He claims this has happened a couple times,” Coto says. “We never got down to the mystery, but those things kind of seem to have a mind of their own every once in a while.” Slattery is resigned to the fact that our devices are probably spying on us. “You have a conversation with someone and the next day your phone is blowing up with ads for whatever you were talking about,” he says. “So I assume that it’s watching. There’s evidence all over the place. I just live a boring enough life where I don’t care.” neXt‘s AI doesn’t care, either. “The AI in this show is actually not an evil AI, and in its own mind, it is simply following the programming that it was given,” Coto says. “Now we have a superintelligence — something that’s a thousand times smarter than we are — that is determined to carry out its programming. And, unfortunately, that means if anybody tries to stop it from carrying out its programming, those individuals need to be stopped.”

East Brunswick council approves resolution establishing rules at virtual meetings By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer
EAST BRUNSWICK – The Township Council approved a resolution regarding emergency remote meetings protocols, procedures and requirements for public participation. Emergency Remote Meeting Protocol for Local Public Bodies is to ensure that local public bodies can continue to conduct official business in an open and transparent manner whenever a declared emergency exists that prohibits physical attendance
by members of the public, according to the council. “The world has been operating remotely for our types of meetings for six months. There have been a series of executive orders, guidance, guidelines issued by various entities in the state and finally, the state has come around issuing a long list of everything they would like us to do when we’re having virtual meetings. They’re now requiring councils and towns to adopt a resolution confirming that we agree to abide by the rules which we have to abide by because they’re telling us we have to,”
Township Attorney Michael Baker said. State law permits a local public body to hold a remote public meeting to conduct public business during a declared emergency if the emergency reasonably prevents a local public body from safely conducting public business at a physical location with members of the public present, according to the council. The council approved establishing the standards and procedures for emergency remote meetings the resolution on Oct. 12 during the council meeting via video conference.

If during a declared emergency the township holds a physical meeting in a location meant to mitigate risk, capacity restrictions are required to reduce the number of individuals who can be present in a meeting, the council will either hold the public meeting at another location with adequate capacity for the reasonably expected attendance by the public or; hold the public meeting as both in-person and a remote public meeting, according to the resolution. A public meeting held in person will not prohibit members of the public from attending in person, according to the council. Baker confirmed that if the township holds a meeting, the public has a right to be there. He said the township is being directed that if it holds a meeting where a quorum of the council is present and they are conducting it in-person, even if everybody else is remote, officials have to allow the public in. The township also has to allow for remote viewing participation during the pandemic emergency. “You will also have to abide by various requirements in terms of how many people you can have in a room. If we can’t accommodate the average number of people that come to our council meetings then we’ll have to move to a larger venue,” Baker said. “We cannot have a public meeting and exclude anyone who wants to come into the meeting. So, it will be from a practical standpoint. … We’re going to be meeting virtually for a very long time.” Baker said if the township goes back to in-person meetings, officials will have issues with complying with appropriate access for the public, which the township would want, but doing it in a safe manner and abiding by these guidelines will be not easy. With most township meetings previously taking place in the municipal courtroom, Business Administrator Joseph Criscuolo said the township has to allow for the proper social distancing, and it has already measured out the municipal courtroom. “Even with the front row there as we prepared for court with social distancing we can only fit 29, and we’d have to eliminate the front row in order for proper social distancing between council members and staff,” Criscuolo said. “So that brings that number down to 23, and the state’s recommendation was somewhere in the neighborhood of 50. So Baker is absolutely right.” If the township holds a remote meeting to conduct public business they will use electronic communication technology routinely used in business settings that can be accessed by the public at no cost and with participant capacity consistent with

the reasonable expectations of the public body for the type of public meeting being held, and will, at minimum, not be limited to fewer than 50 public participants, according to the council. When the township holds a remote public meeting they will allow members of the public to make a public comment by audio and/or by video if the meeting is being held over both, according to the council. Any presentation or documents that would otherwise be viewed or made available to members of the public physically attending a local public meeting will be made visible on a video broadcast of the remote public meeting or made available on the website of the township, according to the council. If a member of the public becomes disruptive during a remote public meeting, including during any period for public comment, the mayor, or his designee, or in their absence the council president, will mute or direct appropriate staff to mute or continue muting the disruptive member of the public and that continued disruption may result in their being prevented from speaking during the remote public meeting or removed from the remote meeting, according to the resolution. Disruptive conduct at a public or remote public meeting includes sustained inappropriate behaviors such as, but not necessarily limited, to shouting, interruption and use of profanity, according to the council. Council calls for parking restrictions along Fern Road By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer
EAST BRUNSWICK – The Township Council introduced an ordinance which, if adopted, will amend the municipal code to formally establish speed limits and parking restrictions for buses, trucks, RVs and campers on Fern Road. “The existing posted speed limits on Fern Road were never placed in the ordinance. We are not proposing to change any of them. We are just adding them to the ordinance so that proper enforcement can be done. They are not being raised or lowered. Each zone on Fern Road will be kept the same speed limit,” Police Lt. Frank Sutter
said. Speed limits on Fern Road are as follows: • A 25 mph speed limit on Fern Road in both directions between Dunhams Corner Road and Candle Lane. • A 35 mph speed limit on Fern Road in both directions between Candle Lane and Cranbury Road. • A 40 mph speed limit on Fern Road in both directions between Cranbury Road and Old Stage Road. It will also be unlawful to park any of the previously listed vehicles, regardless of weight, on any street, avenue, highway or portion thereof in the township from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on any day, with the excep-
tion of vehicles actually being used for emergency service, according to the council. “This is in response to a bulk of complaints and also to minimize the risk of view obstructions for motorists while improving the quality of life for the affected residents,” Sutter said. The council introduced the ordinance during its virtual meeting on Oct. 12. The second and final reading of the ordinance is scheduled for Oct. 26. This ordinance will take effect 20 days after final passage, adoption and publication, according to state law.

Vote ‘yes’ to energy aggregation program
I
grew up in East Brunswick, graduated in 1999, came back for end-of-life-care for family, and found a home again. It’s a nice family place, and I give back as I can. As with all things, the more you give, the more you get. I write now with such intention: to inform. My job is in health policy, in the public sector: figuring out what makes people healthy and how to get them there. There are details, sometimes tough, but I do my best. In my non-job life, it’s all about family and community, approached the same way. My big ask: Please vote “yes” to ballot initiative No. 4, the East Brunswick municipal question, on the backside of your ballot. And get everyone to. Why you should: It’s literally the easiest thing you can do right now to join the fight against climate change. We are at the crisis point. Is that what the ballot question is really about then, climate change? Yes. But that’s not what it says. I know. It’s confusing. I had to read it several times, and I do policy work for a living. But putting everything together, I realized I had to do something, fast. This is it. So what does it say, actually?: Do you want East Brunswick to join a community energy aggregation (CEA) program? Yes or No. What is a CEA? That’s the trickiest part, and what I most wanted to explain to everyone. The goal is to bulk purchase renewable power as a community so your monthly electric bill won’t change much compared to sticking with climate-killing fossil fuels. The more renewable we buy, the more carbon emissions we save. Individuals have opt-in/out option at any time without penalties. The CEA idea has worked out really well, so far, including in New Brunswick and Piscataway. How much carbon emission would I/ we save with the switch? Per household, per year, if you go 100% renewable, that equals 162 trees planted or 24,318 fewer miles driven. If 100% of East Brunswick households do, that equals 2,824,115 trees planted or 428,806,452 fewer miles. This is the power of community action on climate change. If approved, the switch could happen as soon as next year, theoretically. But this vote has to carry first. So vote “yes.”

hen you walk into a good Italian restaurant, no one needs to tell you where you are. In fact, if you were blindfolded, you would still be able to have a good sense or where you were. First off, the smells emanating from the kitchen would be a dead giveaway. If that weren’t enough, maybe the Sinatra music playing in the background or the clink, clink of wine glasses would be the clinchers. Either way, the Peter Perrotta ambiance of the Italian vibe is usually unmistakable. Such is the case, as well, when you get your fist look at the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti Sport AWD compact SUV. Quite simply, there is something unmistakably Italian about the look, feel and drive of this SUV. It has that Italian panache and flair. “In a world of bland crossovers, the Stelvio is a spicy Italian meatball in a Ferragamo suit,” write the editors of Car and Driver. That, my friends, is an almost perfect description. Introduced in 2016, the Stelvio is considered a compact luxury crossover SUV that competes with the likes of the BMW X3 and the Mercedes GLC. This crossover is produced at Alfa Romeo’s Cassino Plant in Piedimonte, San Germano, Italy. It is currently Alfa Romeo’s best selling model. In 2018, Alfa Romeo sold about 43,000 Stelvios. It had been quite some time since I had road tested an Alfa Romeo for review purposes. I think the last Alfa Romeo I had driven was the Spider way back in 1994 – the last year that car was produced.
That Spider was a two-seat, front engine, rear drive roadster. Like most Italian cars, that roadster had a lot of flair to it. However, most of what I remember about that one week test drive with the Spider was how difficult it was to steer that small car. It steered like a Mack truck. The car was fun to drive, once you got it up to speed, but if you had to do a lot of twists and turns with it, it wasn’t so much fun. Well, suffice it to say, a lot has changed at Alfa Romeo since 1994. My one week test drive behind the wheel of the 2020 Stelvio was thoroughly enjoyable. This Stelvio is slick looking, stylish, comfortable on the inside and fun to drive. It’s steering, by the way, is smooth as silk – I guess the engineers at Alfa Romeo have figured out how to fix that issue. The Stelvio I drove was rosso – the Italian word for red – with a slick black leather interior and sporty looking 20-inch aluminum, 5-hole wheels. It has an aggressive and sporty exterior stance. Powering this Stelvio is a a 2.0 liter, four cylinder, turbo-charged engine that puts out an impressive 280 horsepower. The transmission is a smooth eight speed automatic. The Ti Sport – the model I drove – features a dynamic sport tuned suspension that affords this vehicle an exciting ride. It’s fun to drive, handles well through the tight turns and has enough power to do aggressive lane changes and passing maneuvers. The base price of the Ti Sport AWD is $45,745. My tester was equipped with a lot of options and option packages, bringing the bottom line sticker price to $61,240 as tested. Options included: $2,300 for the Rosso Competizone Tri-coat exterior paint; $2,500 for the Ti AWD sport package; $3,250 for Active Driver Assist package; $400 for the security and convenience package; $1,350 for the performance package; $1,350 for a dual pane sunroof; $900 for an upgraded Harmon Kardon audio

system; $200 for a wireless charging pad; $700 for the upgraded wheels; $1,100 for leather dash and doors and $200 for red brake calipers. The EPA fuel consumption ratings for the Stelvio are not all that impressive, but, on the other hand, not terrible. The Stelvio averages 24 miles per gallon – 28 mpg on the highway and 22 around town. The EPA estimates that it will cost, on average, about $2,050 a year in fuel costs for the Stelvio. It uses about 4.2 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. The Stelvio has not been crash test rated the by the government’s 5-star crash test yet. For positive points, the editor’s at Car and Driver noted of the Stelvio that it had “unmistakably Italian styling, lively handling and gutsy turbo charged engine.” Agreed. Car and Driver hit the Alfa Romeo for having “a tight cargo area and untested reliability.”
SUBMITTED PHOTO
e L w e i p
S c I didn’t find the cargo area to be tight1 at all. I’m not sure what the editors at Car and Driver were trying to fit back there, but I found there to be ample room. Reliability has always been an issue with Italian and French cars. However, since most people lease their vehicles these days anyway, I don’t think reliability should be a major concern if you are considering leasing one of these vehicles because the Stelvo will be covered under the 4-year, 50,000 mile warranty offered, if you lease the vehicle for 3 years. On the other hand, if you are thinking of purchasing the Stelvio and keeping it long term, beyond the basic warranty coverage, you might want to find yourself an able bodied mechanic who can fix and repair Italian cars before purchasing.

properly cast. “Once again, Middlesex County is going above and beyond for its residents. Not only did Middlesex County commit to providing Vote By Mail ballots to residents with postage included and far surpassed the number of ballot dropbox locations required by the state – 32 locations compared to the state’s mandated 10 – but the county is now offering unique VICs throughout the county to assist our residents in casting their ballot, Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in a statement provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. “The opening of these VICs will be a tremendous asset to our residents. VICs will be staffed by county clerk election officials who can immediately access voter registration data and determine if the voter has been issued a Vote by Mail ballot, and whether or not a ballot has been received by the election officials, according to the statement. If the voter has not been issued a Vote by Mail ballot, they can apply at the center. Voters will also be able to apply for and receive a replacement ballot – these duplicate ballots are issued in the event a ballot has been lost, damaged, or the voter does not receive it. VICs are not polling locations and ballots cannot be cast inside a VIC. Each VIC is located within the immediate vicinity of a Middlesex County drop box at which a voter may drop off a completed Vote By Mail ballot. The county will operate 97 polling locations on Election Day throughout the county at which residents may complete a paper provisional ballot. Provisional ballots will not be available at the VICs.  In addition, the county clerk’s office has opened to the public, and with extended hours. The County Clerk – Division of Elections Office located in the County Administration Building in New Brunswick will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday for residents looking for information and assistance on how to participate in the 2020 General Election, offering signature verification and providing duplicate ballots. “While the COVID-19 pandemic has required us to restrict public access to the county clerk’s office for the sake of the health and safety of our staff, we welcome the opportunity to bring the public back into our office, practicing all necessary safety measures, to assist them in exercising their right to vote, Middlesex County Clerk Elaine Flynn said in the statement. “This election cycle may be unique in the way our residents vote, but what is not unique is our commitment to ensuring they have all the necessary information and tools to do so. Most voters have several ways to vote

New Jersey American Water verifies systems are compliant
N
ew Jersey American Water has completed its required lead and copper sampling for 2020 and all systems tested meet state water quality regulations. The company tested 13 water systems that are required to be tested between June and September, and all results show compliance with safe drinking water guidelines for lead and copper, the company announced on Oct. 16. The company’s other 19 water systems are tested every three years in accordance with Department of Environmental Protection regulations and they are also in compliance, according to the statement. “New Jersey American Water routinely tests and monitors the drinking water leaving the treatment facilities and at different
distribution points through the system,” Cheryl Norton, president of New Jersey American Water, said in the statement. “These lead and copper test results show that our continued investment in infrastructure and our treatment processes are working. We want our customers to feel confident that the water they use is safe for themselves and their families.” The Raritan water system that was tested this year includes Cranbury, Hightstown, Jamesburg. The results of this testing will be included in next year’s Water Quality Reports. New Jersey American Water customers can access their water quality report online anytime at www.newjerseyamwater. com, under Water Quality.
New Jersey American Water relies on the expertise of more than 800 professionals across the state, from plant operators and water quality professionals to engineers and water distribution professionals, to monitor and test the water, and maintain facilities and infrastructure across the state to support safe, efficient operations, according to the statement. New Jersey American Water’s water treatment technology, combined with its aggressive infrastructure investment program that focuses on the replacement of aging water mains and service lines, work together to support the continued provision of high quality and reliable water service to customers, according to the statement. The company invests approximately $350 mil-
lion annually to upgrade plants, pumps and pipes throughout its service areas. Although lead is not present in the treated water leaving the company’s facilities or in the pipes in the distribution system, the company reminds customers there are additional steps people can take to help further protect themselves from lead particles that could be present in indoor plumbing, according to the statement. If a home was built before 1985, the plumbing system may contain leaded materials. To minimize possible exposure, experts recommend running the kitchen tap with cold water for 30 seconds to 2 minutes if it has gone unused for more than six hours. For more tips and information, visit www.newjerseyamwater.com/leadfacts.

ST. JUDE NOVENA May the sacred heart of Jesus be the adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred heart of Jesus pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, hope of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day. By the eighth day your prayer will be answered. Say it for nine days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you, St. Jude.
G.B. Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
