South River principal shaves head to raise funds for breast cancer patients

South River High School Principal Edward Bucior kept his promise and shaved off his hair to raise money for those battling breast cancer.

aising $2,185 for the Mama Mare Breast Cancer Foundation, South River High School Principal Edward Bucior kept his promise and shaved off his hair. Bucior joined the South River Public Schools on July 1, replacing former high school Principal Wayne Sherman upon his retirement. With the initial fundraising goal set at $1,000, Superintendent Sylvia Zircher said students, staff, community and family/ friends rallied together to raise money before Bucior got his head shaved on Oct. 28 at LX Factory Barber Studio, located at 10 Ferry St. in South River. “Although I cannot speak for everyone, I feel that most people know of someone that has battled through or is currently going through cancer treatments. Personally, I have family members currently going through it and I know how tough it can be. In my opinion, the shaving of my head is a simple way to show support, but it is also a great way to raise money for a great cause,” Bucior said. The Mama Mare Breast Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps cover the cost of medical treatments while providing support to those currently going through treatments, according to Bucior.

Bucior said that the fundraiser helped raise money that will specifically provide support services to breast cancer patients and their families. “A few years ago I did a similar fundraiser and it was a way to bring the community together for a common cause. That is why the title, Together Against Cancer, was selected for the fundraiser,” Bucior said. From Oct. 22-28, Bucior was able to more than double the initial fundraising goal. “Through the help and generous donations of our students, staff, parents, community members, and friends and family, we have currently raised $2,185. In every correspondence with my students and parents guardians, I start my videos, email, or Instagram stories with ‘Ram Family,’ ” Bucior said. “We are all diverse and come from different backgrounds and I think it is important that we create a family-type culture here at South River High School. In tough times, it is always nice knowing that your ‘family’ has your back.” Originally appointed the high school’s new principal in March, with a start date of July 1, Bucior said just a few days into the original two-week mark in March, all (Continued on page 7)

strong majority of East Brunswick residents voted in favor of a ballot question to create a township-wide renewable energy aggregation program. The vote count, as of 8 p.m. on Nov. 3, shows the ballot question was supported by more than 70% of voters, or 11,273 votes, compared to 4,520 who opposed. Mail-in and provisional ballots still need to be counted. The election results will not be certified until at least Nov. 20. Food & Water Watch worked with local residents to collect petition signatures calling on the East Brunswick Township Council to create a municipal energy aggregation program that would reach the 100% renewable goal by the year 2030. The council opted to leave the final de-

cision up to the voters, making this the second time in state history that voters directly approved the creation of such a program; the first happened last November in Piscataway. “I’m glad the referendum has passed. East Brunswick is now a champion in the fight against climate change at the local level,” Dan Ulloa, a community leader and member of the committee of petitioners for the initiative, said in a statement provided by Food & Water Watch on Nov. 4. “Hooray for East Brunswick! I’m looking forward to saving money and helping the climate at the same time,” Kathy Scarborough, a local activist and member of the committee of petitioners, said in the statement.

“This is a win for our climate, a win for clean air, and a win for grassroots democracy,” Food & Water Watch canvass director Charlie Kratovil said in the statement. “Communities all across the state are showing that we can take bold climate action at the local level. We need our state and federal representatives to follow their lead.” The ordinance creates a new municipal energy aggregation program, in effect giving residents a bulk buying discount on their electricity bills. The program sets guidelines about the sources of that electricity, reaching the 100% renewable energy threshold by the year 2030. PJM Interconnection is a regional transmission organization that coordinates

the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia, but renewable electricity created outside of the PJM grid cannot be directly utilized by residents, according to the prior reports in the Sentinel. Prioritizing the generation of renewable electricity in the region served by the PJM grid will help improve local air quality, improve public health impacts, and decrease costs, according to the reports. In accordance with the state’s Government Energy Aggregation Act, the township seeks to establish a Government (Continued on page 4)

ith the votes still being counted and election results pending for the new mayor of Spotswood, current Mayor Edward Seely reflected on his four-year term and lessons learned along the way. In November 2016, Seely said he began his term as mayor and won all seven districts in the borough. He has since decided not to run for re-election. Reflecting on some of his greatest achievements as mayor, Seely said he considers some of his best accomplishments as completing the long-overdue Emergency Medical Services (EMS) building; revitalization of the Cottage Street area with

new sewer, curbing and paving, the largest project to date; receiving funding and beginning the lake project; and keeping his campaign promises. In March, Gov. Phil Murphy issued a state of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic. “COVID-19, or any pandemic, is not something I would wish on any leader, it by far has been the biggest challenge during my term,” Seely said. “You try to do what you can for as many as possible and fortunately with the help of the borough employees we have thus far been able to maintain some type of normalcy; however, the true impact of this has yet to come.” When asked about what advice he would give the new mayor, Seely said it was tough to answer.

“No new mayor wants advice from the outgoing mayor, but here goes: Listen. I mean really listen. And always, when possible, take as long as you can to make a decision,” Seely said. Seely said being the leader of the community has taught him lessons he will never forget. “The majority of our residents and our employees are all good people, but there is no limit to what some will go to achieve what is best for them,” Seely said. “I have learned that greed, deception and manipulation can all be disguised in a suit of armor. I have learned that holding some to accountability can be quite costly both financially and mentally. “…With all that goes on, good and bad, if asked would I do it the same way all over

again? Absolutely, for I have always had the residents’ best interest at heart. Good luck to the next mayor; they are truly going to need it,” Seely said. As of press time, resident Jacqueline Palmer was leading the mayoral race, having received 1,297 of the votes. Council President Larry Kraemer has received 677 votes, according to the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office website. The results of the November 2020 general election will be certified by the Middlesex County Board of Canvassers on or before Nov. 20, according to the clerk’s office website. township seeks to establish a Government Energy Aggregation Program for the provision of electricity within the township for the purpose of obtaining power supply cost savings for residential and business participants in the township, according to the reports. The township, from time to time, will request proposals from electric power suppliers for electric generation services through the program, in which the township and its authorized personnel will be lead agents in administering the township’s Community Energy Aggregation Program, according to the reports. East Brunswick now joins the growing movement of towns and cities who are leading the movement to get off fossil fuels and onto a healthier future powered by clean

energy. Food & Water Watch is working in 15 municipalities to enact similar 100% renewable energy programs, according to the statement. The group played a key role in creating programs in New Brunswick and Piscataway, saving residents’ on their utility bills while expanding the use of clean, renewable energy. This summer, the campaign won a major victory in Edison, where the township’s council approved an ordinance that puts the fifth-largest township in New Jersey on the path to 100% renewable electricity by 2030, according to the statement. Earlier this month, local residents teamed up with Food & Water Watch to pass a similar clean energy ordinance in Collingswood, and the Red Bank council voted to create a new 100% renewable energy program last month. • Staff writer Vashti Harris contributed to this story.

Veterans understand what it’s like to live in uncertain times

E

very November we honor, remember and thank our Veterans. This year, during a global health pandemic, we can all be especially grateful for the courage and dedication of our veterans as they have always understood what it’s like to live in uncertain times, and to make sacrifices for the safety of others. Veterans Day was first known as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. In 1954, it became Veterans Day, paying tribute to all veterans in all conflicts. Today, the observance is truly all-inclusive and allows us to pay tribute to all military veterans, living or deceased. Above all, this day reminds us that none of our freedoms, in times of hardship or celebration, would be possible without our servicemen and women. On every Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., members of each military branch attend a ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in

Arlington National Cemetery. schools shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. “As we all know, the two weeks quickly turned into the remainder of the school year. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to meet the students or staff before school let out for the summer,” Bucior said. “To help the students get to know who I am during the virtual setting, high school Assistant Principal Nicole Yorek and I created a high school Instagram account.” Bucior said he tries his best to post all of the positive things happening at the high school building. “My intention was to always shave my head for charity, but I also wanted our student body to get more involved. So what started as a friendly bet of increasing the number of students following the account from 580 to 750 turned into the shaving of my head as a fundraiser,” Bucior said. Bucior said the truth is, he thinks it is amazing that various stakeholders rallied behind this fundraiser. . “Being new to the district myself, it was / great to see that my Ram Family had my back. I honestly would have shaved my - head even if we only raised a dollar, but the fact is that we more than doubled our initial goal of $1,000,” Bucior said. “Knowing that the Mama Mare Breast Cancer Foundation will be receiving this money, we know with confidence that they are going to use it to help those currently fighting or who have gone through breast cancer treatments.” For more information about the Mama Mare Breast Cancer Foundation visit, www.mamamare.org. East Brunswick takes advantage of opportunity to play on gridiron By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer

EAST BRUNSWICK – Playing football during the coronavirus pandemic has had its challenges for the East Brunswick High School football team, but the Bears have been able to plow through and give themselves every opportunity to play a full season. “They’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing, which is great,” East Brunswick Coach Andy Steinfeld said of his players. “They’re wearing masks. I didn’t think we would be here in week five. Just proves that they can do what they’re asked to do.” East Brunswick is 2-3 through its first five games this season as it heads into its regular season finale against Sayreville War Memorial High School on Nov. 6. The Bears have relied on its strong rushing attack, led by senior quarterback Zach Zebro, to succeed this fall on offense. Zebro has rushed for a team-high 288 yards and has barreled his way into the end

zone four times on the ground this season. The senior quarterback has also been electric through the air, throwing for 531 yards and seven touchdowns. Zebro’s battering mate in the backfield, senior running back Austin Percy, has accounted for 259 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Junior running back Franco Deguida has rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns, including a five-yard scamper to the end zone during the second quarter of the team’s contest against Montclair High School on Oct. 30. East Brunswick is averaging 159.8 yards on the ground through its first five games of the season. “Offensively, we have been able to run the ball,” Steinfeld said. “A big question in the beginning of the season was our offensive line and I have been pleased with what they’ve done. They do a good job.” The Bears experienced the chaos of games being cancelled due to COVID-19 when they were supposed to play Monroe (Continued on next page)

Do you have vascular disease and not know it? Get screened today. Monmouth Heart and Vascular is offering an arterial screening event at our Eatontown office to help determine if you have, or may be at risk for, underlying vascular disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, and the disease that causes it, atherosclerotic disease (hardening of the arteries), also can cause stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and aneurysm formation. These vascular diseases are often termed silent killers, as people often remain asymptomatic until the disease has advanced. However, screening for vascular diseases that affect the peripheral blood vessels outside the heart can be easily accomplished by non-invasive means, allowing for medical care that may prevent disease progression. The tests are non-invasive, painless, and simple to administer. Vascular ultrasound techniques and blood pressure measurements can be used to evaluate the carotid arteries, peripheral blood vessels, and the abdominal aorta to determine if any disease is present.

Risk Factors for Vascular Disease include: • • • • •

Smoking • High Cholesterol Diabetes • High Blood Pressure Age > 55 • Obesity Sedentary Lifestyle Family History of Vascular or Heart Disease

If you have or know anyone with these risk factors, we are offering arterial screenings at a minimal cost at our office.

Township High School on Oct. 30. The Monroe Falcons had to drop out due to a positive COVID-19 test in the program. Instead of taking a bye week, Steinfeld and East Brunswick scrambled to find an opponent to play and were able to set up a

matchup with Montclair. Despite the quick turnaround and not having a lot of time to prepare for the game, Steinfeld said his players handled the situation well and “just wanted to play.” “These kids give great effort,” Steinfeld stated. “They practice hard.” A 21-0 deficit in the first half was too much for East Brunswick to overcome as Montclair was able to earn a 31-17 victory. East Brunswick played very well in the second half, which they entered trailing 31-7. Zebro connected with junior wide receiver Mike Zades for a 54-yard touchdown to begin the fourth quarter. Zades had two catches for 60 yards on the touchdown drive. East Brunswick made it a two-score game with 7:56 left to play when junior placekicker Jeff Podolsky knocked in a 25yard field goal attempt. From seeing his defense shut out Montclair in the second half, to his squad finding some rhythm offensively against a good Essex County team, Steinfeld believes that type of play from his squad for an entire game will help them win some more games. “They came out and played a lot better in the second half,” Steinfeld said. “We (next) play Sayreville, another good Middlesex County team that is well coached. It’s going to be a battle. If we can put two good halves together, I think we can win that game.”

East Brunswick Army vet is unsung hero

I

am a former director of Public Safety in East Brunswick, and I’m also a military veteran of the U.S. Navy, which I served in from 1975 through 1980. I served as director in East Brunswick from 1998 until 2005, and served the East Brunswick Police Department from 1980 through 2005. I am now a retired 32-year law enforcement veteran and a resident of San Antonio, Texas. I just finished reading a fascinating historical book about the D-Day landings on Omaha Beach by the First Infantry Division, also known as “The Big Red One.” The book is called “The Dead and Those About to Die,” and one of the heroic soldiers during the invasion (there were hundreds) was Technical Sergeant Philip Streczyk of East Brunswick. Born in 1918, he was a 25-year-old Army sergeant on DDay, and his incredibly heroic actions that day and during subsequent battles across Europe earned him an unbelievable four Silver Stars and six Bronze Stars. His com-

pany commander called him “the greatest unsung hero of World War II.” Sadly, his battle fatigue (now accurately called PTSD), and his constant pain from physical wounds led to his suicide at the age of 39 on June 25, 1958. He is buried at The Church of Our Savior Cemetery in East Brunswick. I researched the cemetery and it’s actually the Polish National Catholic Church Cemetery which is located in Hamilton At a time when our country is at the height of respect for the selfless service of our military heroes, men like Philip Streczyk deserve the full recognition of all Americans. I would like to lend my full support to TSgt Streczyk’s long overdue recognition for his incredible contributions to the safety and security we enjoy as a free democratic society. Thomas W. Finn San Antonio, Texas

Election updates For continuing post-Election Day coverage, visit www.centraljersey.com Marijuana group says legalization question has been approved by N.J. voters By MARK ROSMAN Managing Editor

A

n organization that advocates for the legalization of marijuana is asserting New Jersey voters approved a public question in the Nov. 3 election which calls for amending the state constitution to accommodate the adult use possession, production and sale of marijuana to individuals age 21 or older. “Adult use” marijuana is also referred to as “recreational use” marijuana. In a press release issued shortly after polls closed on Nov. 3, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) said Garden State voters had passed the question. The result of the election is not official, as additional mail-in ballots and provisional ballots remain to be counted. The result will not be official until it is certified and at this time it is not known when certification will occur.

NORML Executive Director Erik Altieri was quoted in the press release as saying, “Garden State voters spoke resoundingly. They are demanding their lawmakers end the failed policy of marijuana criminalization and instead pursue a more sensible path of regulation and legalization. “Law enforcement in New Jersey arrests more citizens each year for minor marijuana violations than almost any other state in the nation. “By moving to end this fiscally wasteful and morally repugnant policy, state officials will now be able to prioritize law enforcement resources toward combating more serious criminal activities, better respect the personal freedom and civil liberties of their citizens, end the racist application of marijuana prohibition laws against communities of color, and direct new tax revenues toward important social programs such as education and infrastructure

development,” Altieri said. Carly Wolf, NORML’s state policies coordinator, said, “Because the public question is a non-binding, legislatively referred ballot question, the New Jersey Legislature must now take immediate action to draft and implement enabling legislation in a manner that is in accordance with voters’ sentiments. “Their first priority should be bringing about an end to the tens of thousands of low-level marijuana possession arrests that occur each year in New Jersey. Once this is accomplished, they should then expeditiously move forward to meet voters’ second demand, which is to initiate regulations to license and oversee the commercial cannabis market in New Jersey,” Wolf said. In response to the apparent passage of the public question, State Sen. Nick Scutari (D-Middlesex, Somerset, Union) said, “What began as a mission to bring reform

to our criminal justice system and progress to New Jersey has finally become an inescapable reality for my colleagues in the Legislature. “Credit is due entirely to voters in this state who, after weighing the apprehension expressed by some politicians, courageously declared our society is ready for a regulated and safe cannabis industry in New Jersey. “As the prime sponsor of this legislation, it has been my honor to shepherd this effort through several administrations of five governors over 17 years. “Along with Gov. Phil Murphy, Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, I am ready to work with every member of the Legislature to take the necessary steps to realize the will of the people that was so overwhelmingly expressed on Nov. 3. This is a win for our communities of color, for fairness and for common sense,” Scutari said.

Springpoint residents give high marks for pandemic response

I

n a recent independent survey, residents of Springpoint Senior Living gave their communities high marks for the response to the COVID-19 health crisis, with an overall ranking of 4.72 out of 5. Holleran, a nationally recognized research and consulting firm that specializes in the senior living industry, conducted the survey of 1,204 Springpoint independent living residents between Aug. 17 and Sept. 4, 2020. The communities scored extremely well for overall communications, comfort provided by the staff, and resident confidence in the community’s ability to manage a future pandemic, according to information provided by Springpoint. Based in Wall Township, Springpoint is a nationally recognized aging services provider that operates eight full service continuing care retirement communities that were part of the Holleran survey, including: The Atrium at Navesink Harbor in Red Bank; Crestwood Manor in Whiting; Meadow Lakes in East Windsor; Monroe Village in Monroe Township; The Moorings at Lewes in Lewes, Delaware; The Oaks at Denville in Denville; Stonebridge at Montgomery in Skillman; and Winchester Gardens in Maplewood.

“These survey results are an affirmation of what we already knew – that our communities have done an outstanding job during the pandemic,” Anthony A. Argondizza, president and CEO of Springpoint, said in the statement. “Over the past eight months, we’ve received an outpouring of appreciation and support from our residents and families on how well we’ve managed through this unprecedented time. Our ‘Springpoint Heroes’ truly are the shining stars.” From the beginning, Springpoint and its communities took a very aggressive approach to fighting the pandemic, with the safety and well-being of its residents and staff members as the top priority, according to the statement. The Springpoint response has been guided by healthcare professionals and medical directors, in compliance with mandates from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as the state and local Departments of Health. Since March, the following safety measures have been in place to assure safe and healthy Springpoint communities, according to the statement: Team members

complete daily wellness checks, including having their temperature taken. Sick employees are not allowed to work. All guests must complete a wellness screening questionnaire and have their temperature taken prior to their visit. All communities are cleaned regularly and high-touch areas are disinfected with greater frequency. Hand sanitizer is available throughout the communities for guests and employees. All employees and visitors are required to wear a face a covering and maintain proper social distancing. Springpoint communities also placed a strong emphasis on the prevention of social isolation by making sure that residents stayed connected with staff members, families and one another in many different ways, according to the statement. During the stay-at-home restrictions, the in-house TV channels in Springpoint communities provided updates from the senior leadership team to keep residents informed. The channel also provides daily exercise classes, brain fitness, trivia, concerts, movies, lectures and religious ceremonies for residents to view in the comfort and safety of their homes. Zoom meetings and live streaming events were also available. In

addition, staff members checked-in and called residents for in-home meal orders, door deliveries, and other needs. As Springpoint Senior Living communities are cautiously re-opening, residents are engaging in a variety of fun and creatively social distanced activities, according to the statement. The spirit of the communities is beginning to return, which is a welcome change. Residents are out-andabout, enjoying the community and getting reacquainted with their neighbors and staff. Springpoint continues to promote safety protocols while making the best of the unprecedented situation by supporting one another with compassion and respect. Residents and family members continue to express their gratitude for the ongoing efforts of Springpoint employees and leadership teams. Argondizza said, “Kind words and encouragement from residents and family members sustained us during the most difficult days and continue to motivate us as we work together to create our new normal in each of our communities.” Learn more at springpointsl.org.

Prayer to St. Jude Oh Holy St. Jude, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near Kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
