East Brunswick schools will go fully remote through January

S

The goals for Tamarack East Course renovations are as follows: • Improve the ability to provide higher and more consistent maintenance standards through better control of irrigation and drainage and improved turf grasses while at the same time reducing the expense of managing these courses • Enhance playability for all caliber of players • Attract new users by adding more strategic interest and aesthetics through integration of design features that make each course more fun to play and more memorable

uperintendent Victor Valeski has announced that the East Brunswick Public Schools District will return to a full remote schedule on Nov. 16 due to ongoing COVID-19 cases. “Based on a comprehensive review of our current and forecasted positive COVID-19 and close contact trends, East Brunswick Public Schools will move to 100% remote instruction on Monday, Nov. 16. Our planned return to our Hybrid Instructional Model will be Jan. 11, 2021,” Valeski said in a prepared statement on Nov.10. “I am making this difficult decision for the protection of all our schools’ populations. By moving quickly to remote learning for this period of time, which includes Thanksgiving and our winter recess, we can position ourselves for a safe return on Jan. 11,” Vaeski said in the statement. Valeski said there will be no supplemental instruction for the remainder of this week so each school’s administrative team can plan for a distribution of any student material needed during this remote period. During the remote period: • Meal distributions will continue. • There will be no Early Morning Program, After School Kids Program or Remote Learning Centers. • All other scheduled non-instructional school activities will continue at this time. “Each school’s principal will be communicating to their students and families with specifics about our shift from hybrid to full-time remote instruction,” Valeski said in the statement. “Again, full-time remote instruction begins Nov. 16 and we will plan to return to hybrid instruction on Jan. 11, 2021. “I know this is difficult news for some of our community. We are still here to answer your questions and address your concerns. We are East Brunswick. We have gotten this far together and together we can get through this difficult period in our recovery. Let’s make safe practices a habit

Tamarack golf course in East Brunswick will get a series of upgrades over the next few years.

Middlesex County initiates plans to revamp Tamarack golf course

M

iddlesex County is implementing new plans to enhance the popular Tamarack golf course with the closure of the East Course as part of the initial phase of a multi-faceted improvement project starting later this month. The East Course will undergo muchneeded renovations and upgrades in three focus areas: irrigation, drainage, and new design features that will dramatically transform the player experience and allow for enhanced maintenance of the course, according to information provided by Middlesex County on Nov. 11. Subsequently, once the East Course is completed in Spring 2022, the West Course

is scheduled for similar upgrades. “Our golf courses in Middlesex County have undergone a dramatic transformation since the county retained the services of a nationally recognized golf management firm in 2019 to oversee operations,” Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement. “It’s thrilling to see immediate improvements in the level of service and the quality of experience our courses offer players. Our investment in upgrading Tamarack is part of a larger strategic vision for the county to enhance the quality of life for our residents and attract new visitors to ultimately become a leading destination for recreation.”

Local high school students create free tutoring service that spans three countries By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

W

hen Divyesh Jevtani learned about LimitlessMinds – a free tutoring service run by high school students – from his son’s school principal, he jumped at the opportunity to sign up his son Vinay. “My son was missing the one-to-one interaction with a teacher,” he said, adding Vinay was in the second grade at the time and is now a rising third grader. “Our tutor communicates with me after each session on what they covered and the homework for the week. She is very patient with Vinay and adjusts the curriculum per his own learning pace.” The Edison School District transitioned to remote learning in March after it had to close schools due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Manan Shah and Linda Liu, seniors at John P. Stevens High School, teamed up to form LimitlessMinds Inc., a non-profit organization that matches K-8 students with volunteer tutors in their community to provide free 1:1 virtual tutoring in academics. Manan said as he adjusted to online schooling, he realized that many other students including his younger cousins and friends, shared the same challenges that he was facing with the unexpected transition. Through his experiences in Boy Scouts over the past decade and his service as the vice president of a local teen volunteer conservation unit, giving back has always been one of his core values. That’s when he thought of recruiting volunteer high school students to provide free virtual tutoring to K-8 students. “When Manan approached me with the idea, immediately I loved it,” Linda said. The two high school students brainstormed a name for their idea, “Limitless” for Linda and “Minds” for Manan and created a logo. They launched their idea on April 8 through their own social media and with the help from JP Stevens Principal Anthony Shallop, they were able to spread the word about their organization to middle and elementary school principals, who sent out their information to parents. “Manan and Linda were driven to make a real difference in supporting those

around them,” Shallop said. “They reached out to me with an idea to establish a network of student tutor volunteers to help the younger students in our district transition to remote learning and provide continued support. Together we worked on the logistics and rolled it out.” Shallop said the school motto for the 2019-20 school year was, “If not me … then who?” “When we shifted to remote learning, I stressed the importance of this mantra, encouraging our students to support one another and their surrounding communities,” he said. “So many students did just that.” Donna Abatemarco, principal at James Madison Intermediate School, said the transition to remote learning was a challenge for everyone. “Manan and Linda were experiencing the obstacles of remote learning firsthand and saw an opportunity to do something positive,” she said. “Within a few weeks, they were able to organize an incredible tutoring service to help our students navigate through the challenges of remote learning. In addition to supporting the students academically, the high school tutors also served as role models by showing our younger students what it takes to persevere

through tough times. Manan and Linda’s initiative is a shining example of how individuals can come together to help each other as a community.” Mike Seiler, principal for James Madison Primary School, said when Manan and Linda reached out to him and shared their vision, he immediately jumped on board. “It is always great when we can work together as a district to support not only our students, but in this case, the families of our students,” he said. “As a parent myself, I knew how difficult it was to keep up with work and teaching my son at home. Having this support for the parents and the students was a huge support that enabled students to grow and to take some of the pressure off of the parents.” Seiler said Edison is filled with many creative, talented and smart students. “This is just another example of how they rise to a challenge to support other students and community,” he said. “I am really proud of their efforts.” From April to now, LimitlessMinds took off. The organization has 300 volunteer high school tutors spanning 14 chapters and three countries. There are chapters in East Brunswick, Iselin, Marlboro and West Windsor-Plains-

boro and New York City, Houston, and the capital cities of Pakistan and El Salvador. The organization recently reached more than 1,700 tutoring hours. Manan said he had two friends from Scotch Plains reach out to him to volunteer as tutors. With the realization the service could span to Scotch Plains, his friends spread the service to their area. Then Linda reached out to people she knew from East Brunswick and the chapters snowballed from there. “We’ve had people reach out from Hawaii and California where we don’t have chapters yet,” Manan said. “In those cases, we still want to help them so we just matched them with another chapter.” The chapter in Edison is the largest chapter. Manan and Linda manage volunteer tutoring inquiries and tutee inquiries through a form. “A student indicates what grade they are in, what subject they need help with and what times they are available, and we match tutors and tutees with similar availability and alignment of subjects,” Linda said. The impetus of LimitlessMinds was to provide help to the community during COVID-19, the high school students said. “As it grew, we realized we could morph into a free tutoring service because tutoring can be very expensive,” Linda said. Manan and Linda said the feedback from parents, teachers and principals have been amazing and rewarding. “We even had a retired teacher from another district who sent us a letter in the mail thanking both of us for our efforts,” Manan said. Linda said she not not only loves that their organization provides tutoring where a student can improve in their academics, but it also creates a bond – kind of like an older sibling type bond – which is important in a time where people may feel isolated. “This way they can see other people and have that connection to the outside world and get to know someone,” she said. Also, tutors are able to receive volunteer hours through the service. For more information, visit http://www. limitlessmindsinc.org/.

East Brunswick holiday gift card drive continues through Nov. 23 By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

EAST BRUNSWICK – Seeking to spread Christmas cheer for families in need, the Department of Recreation and Parks, along with the Interfaith Clergy Council, are holding a holiday gift card drive. As of January of this year, the recreation department no longer maintains a food pantry on-site at its recreation and parks office. Clients have transitioned to Aldersgate Outreach Community Center located on Ryders Lane, according to information provided by the department. “We are hosting a holiday gift card drive for the December holidays with all

proceeds going to Aldersgate Outreach Community Center,” said Jill Veit, Department of Recreation executive assistant. “Our East Brunswick residents and East Brunswick school families that receive their services will benefit from these donations and will be able to have the option to either purchase food items or gifts for their children/families for the winter holidays.” Veit said the Interfaith Clergy Council is a collaboration of multiple faiths/religions which covers a large part of the community. Aldersgate Outreach offers East Brunswick residents a better opportunity to maintain food stability for their families. Families are able to obtain food on a weekly basis including many items we were not

equipped to stock at our office, according to information provided. Veit said the main goal for the gift card drive is to provide assistance to as many families in need within the community. “This year, we expect the need for holiday help to increase significantly due to the pandemic. Your support will help keep many of these families on track without having to worry about how they will make the holidays happen this year,” Veit said. “The holidays are a great time to donate gift cards because of the growing needs and the spirit of the holiday season.” Veit said gift cards to Target or Walmart in denominations of $5, $10 or $20 can be mailed to the department’s office at 334 Dunhams Corner Road, or can be left in

the drop box attached to the building near the entrance. Donations will be collected through Nov. 23. Also, the food pantry continues to accept non-perishable food items at the box truck located at the department’s office parking lot on Dunhams Corner Road. “If the back of the truck isn’t open, please feel free to open the door and place your donation inside. Food donations will be donated to Aldersgate Outreach Community Center for assistance in serving our East Brunswick families,” Veit said. When donating a gift card, mark Attn: Jill Veit on the envelope. For more information, visit www.eastbrunswick.org/249/Recreation-Parks.

Old Bridge to study waterfront area for redevelopment, rehabilitation By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

OLD BRIDGE – Township officials are taking a look at Old Matawan Road and the Route 35 Laurence Harbor Parkway as areas in need of redevelopment and rehabilitation. The Old Bridge Township Council approved a resolution for the Planning Board to study the areas on Sept. 21. Veena Sawant, township planner, presented the Planning Board with the Old Matawan Road study area on Oct. 6 and the Route 35 Laurence Harbor Parkway area on Oct. 27. The Old Matawan Road study area is a gateway or entrance to Old Bridge from East Brunswick. It comprises 26 parcels – some vacant lots, including a New Jersey Department of Transportation lot, some commercial and few residential homes. The area is located on either sides of Old Matawan Road between Route 18 and County Road 516. The area is in the Economic Development Opportunity (EDO) Commercial Neighborhood Zone 1. The existing land uses are commercial, residential, automotive and personal services. Many homes and buildings within the area were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Surrounding land uses include Southwood development, built in the early-mid 1950s; Miller School, built between

1954 and 1957; and residential and commercial properties. Sawant said the Madison Township Historic Commission mentioned four sites in the area as historic sites. None of the properties are listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, she said. The area is a transit route for the Middlesex County Area Transit Bus, which runs between Brunswick Square Mall in East Brunswick to Old Bridge, New Jersey Transit Line, which runs from Old Bridge, East Brunswick, Jersey City and Weehawken and another bus that runs from Lakewood, Old Bridge and New York. The Route 35 Laurence Harbor Parkway area consists of 49 parcels: 25 residential, 13 commercial/retail, eight public, one house of worship, one Old Bridge Municipal Utilities Authority and one vacant parcel. The boundaries of the area are McKinley Avenue and Sunset Avenue to the southeast, Lakeview Avenue to the northwest and Ravine Avenue and Sunset Avenue to the southwest. The majority of the parcels lie within the EDO-1 Zone and few properties lie within the R-5 Residential Zone. The area is accessible to Route 35 and CR-689. There are two New Jersey Transit bus stops, which run to the Old Bridge Commuter Lot on Ernston Road for a transfer bus to New York City.

The area is disadvantaged with obsolete lots, no room for parking as well as residential and restaurant driveways butting Route 35, a high speed corridor, Sawant said. As for the destination waterfront area, Sawant said “the sky’s the limit.” She said with a resolution coming soon for the Margaret’s Creek sector of the Raritan Bay Slag Superfund site, it is the right time to investigate the area to make it better. “Most municipalities with a waterfront have gone the redevelopment route,” she said, adding officials need to create a vision to capitalize on the township’s assets of the waterfront, existing recreational facilities and transportation services. In July, township officials discussed implementing parking fees from Memorial Day to October and residential parking permits as the demand of the beachfront area in the Laurence Harbor section of the township continued to rise. The Township Council approved residential parking permits in August. Discussions in regards to parking fees are still in the works The Laurence Harbor beachfront on Route 35 includes Pauls Beach made up of 6.69 acres; the police substation; Raritan Bayfront Park, made up of 11.98 acres, which includes the Laurence Parkway Recreation Center, restrooms, boardwalk,

lighted basketball court, handball court, playground equipment and fishing jetties; and the underdeveloped Seidler’s Beach made up of 1.2 acres. Cliffwood Beach, consisting of 33.5 acres on Raritan and Ocean boulevards, has been closed since Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The benefits of redevelopment and rehabilitation to areas include revitalization and spurs of economic development, encouragement for development of vacant parcels/buildings, proper utilization of land, increased ratables and improved property values, promotion of sustainability and safer mobility options. Both the Old Bridge Matawan Road and Route 35 Laurence Harbor Parkway area are within the state’s Smart Growth Planning and Metropolitan Planning areas for infill development or redevelopment. Sawant noted the redevelopment and rehabilitation plans are non-condemnation plans and the township will not exercise eminent domain. “If a homeowner does not want to take advantage of redevelopment or rehabilitation, they will not be forced to do anything,” she said. The plans offer opportunities for upgrades and tax abatements under the local redevelopment and housing laws.

amala Harris’ husband has roots in the Matawan and Old Bridge area. In November 2019, Douglas Emhoff tweeted “I lived in Matawan/Old Bridge from 1969-1981 so New Jersey is still very much in my veins.” On Nov. 7, it was projected that former Vice President Joe Biden earned enough electoral votes to defeat President Donald Trump in the election on Nov. 3 to become the 46th president of the United States in January. Kamala Harris would become the first female and first South Asian vice president if the results stand. Results are not official until certified. Schools Superintendent David Cittadino tweeted on Nov. 11 a picture of Emhoff’s yearbook photo. The possible first second gentlemen attended Cedar Ridge High School before he moved to California. Emhoff is 16 years old in the Ski Club photo. He and his family lived in the Lakeridge community, which is a development of private homes, according to Richard Pucciarelli, president of the historical society and museum. Pucciarelli said although Emhoff did not graduate from Cedar Ridge High School, his sister Jamie graduated from the high school in 1980. Emhoff also has another brother Andy Emhoff.

Milltown consolidates planning, zoning boards into one entity By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

MILLTOWN – The Borough Council has consolidated municipal planning and zoning powers into one planning board. Currently, the borough has a ninemember Planning Board with two alternate members and a seven-member Zoning Board of Adjustment. Borough Attorney Peter Vignuolo said the decision to consolidate the two boards was a logistical and economic effort to make Milltown more efficient. “Rather than have two boards that have

discreet functions for the borough, one board of nine members and four alternate [members] will have both those functions,” he said. The council unanimously approved the amendment to the ordinance for the consolidation at a Borough Council meeting on Nov. 9. In applications for variances and use variances seeking relief from local zoning laws, which is heard by a Zoning Board of Adjustment, Vignuolo said the applications would now be heard by the Planning Board. Don’t Let This Go By Paul Hall

T

ragedy can be around any corner. What seems to be a totally normal and average life can be taken away in an instant, and in that same moment lives will change forever. George (Kevin Costner) and Margaret Blackledge (Diane Lane) are living and working on their ranch and have recently welcomed their new grandson to the family. But when an accident leaves their daughter-in-law Lorna (Kayli Carter) a single mother, life takes an irreversible turn. Lorna remarries, and George and Margaret do whatever they can to help with raising their grandson. But Lorna’s new life with Donnie Weboy (Will Brittain) is fraught with peril. When Margaret goes to visit her grandson and finds the young family gone without a word of notice, she makes a life-changing decision to set out and find

them, whether George joins her or not. As a former lawman, George reluctantly joins his wife on a road trip into the unknown to attempt to bring their grandson home at any cost. But can they handle what is waiting for them? When George and Margaret finally encounter the rest of the Weboy clan, led by matriarch Blanche (Lesley Manville), they confront a tight-knit crew protecting the abusive Donnie. And the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as this family puts a capital D in the word “dysfunction.” Lane and Costner deliver strong performances as the grieving yet driven grandparents. You can feel George and Margaret’s pain as the actors have the uncanny ability to elicit those emotions within us. The story places the couple in situations that amplify their performances, and when Manville joins the mix, the result is explosive. When Lane and Manville are onscreen together, they are the absolute

best and will grab you and won’t let go without shaking you to your core. Let Him Go is a hard film to watch. It is both dark and quiet and loud and stormy. I was riveted by the ugliness inside some people juxtaposed with the internal goodness of others. Though after working my way through the narrative, I still have hope. Hope for a better tomorrow, hope for more of the good and less of the drama in our daily lives as we go forward. And a renewed hope in movies

as they return to theaters, to tell us stories that don’t always have happy endings, but still offer tales of love and devotion that transform the soul. Paul’s Grade: B Let Him Go Rated R Stars: Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Lesley Manville, Kayli Carter, Booboo Stewart Director: Thomas Bezucha

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2021 Infiniti QX80 Sensory AWD

I

n sheer size alone the 2021 Infiniti QX 80 should be crowned “King of the Road”. When I see vehicles this large, I usually quip to whoever is within ear shot at the time, “Geez, that looks like a house on wheels.” Well folks, for 2021, Infiniti has introduced a new trim line to the QX 80 offerings, the top-of-the-line Sensory AWD. I was fortunate enough to jump behind the wheel of the new Sensory AWD QX Peter Perrotta 80 recently for a one week test drive and if you are going to label this full sized luxury SUV a house on wheels, it’s one very opulent house. “A new Sensory grade sits at the top of the revised QX80 line up,” says a release from Infiniti. “Occupants will experience a sumptuous cabin featuring quilted semianiline leather appointed seats, and charcoal burl wood trim and a new graphite tricot headliner.” Moreover, the exterior now features 22inch forged alloy wheels, chrome mirror caps. A new hydraulic motion control suspension system was also added to provide a smoother, more stable ride. The results are indeed impressive for this massive SUV, first introduced by Infiniti back in 2004. I not only drove the QX 80 around town – to and from work and such – for one week, but I also took it on a 240-mile roundtrip sojourn out to Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, to display my wares at a sports card show. The ride out to Camp Hill and back was extremely comfortable and pleasant. The

cabin is not only opulent but roomy and comfortable as well. The QX 80, powered by a large 5.6 liter naturally aspirated V8 that puts out 400 horsepower is more than adequately powered. This engine roars, providing easy passing and lane changing capabilities, and once you get all the way over to command the left lane on the Pennsylvania Turnpike it cruises at high speeds quite nicely as well. However, all this bigness and opulence comes at a price. The new Sensory model QX 80 is not cheap and neither is it gas consumption efficient – this isn’t your typical tree hugger ride. The EPA’s fuel consumption ratings for the QX 80 come in at an average of 15 miles per gallon – with 19 mpg on highway driving and 13 mpg in around town or city driving. Moreover, the EPA estimates that on average it will cost you about $3,250 a year to feed the QX 80 with gas as it uses about 6.7 gallons per every 100 miles driven. The base price of the Sensory model QX 80 is $83,300. My test model had added options as well and when you tack on the $1,395 destination and delivery charge the bottom line sticker price comes in at a hefty $87,035. The added options on my test vehicle included: $485 for Infiniti illuminated kick plates; $410 for roof rail cross bars; $295 for a cargo package; $455 for Infiniti illuminated welcome lighting and $695 for the Coulis Red premium exterior paint. So the question at this point remains, is while the new Sensory top-of-the-line QX 80 is certainly luxurious and rich, the price point it is now offered at pushes it into the company of some pretty hefty competitors – namely the popular BMW X7 or the equally as popular Mercedes Benz GLS. In summarizing its review of the QX 80, the editors at Car and Driver gave it high marks for, “handsome styling, standard V8 power, plush and spacious cabin.”

2021 Infiniti QX80 Sensory AWD

SUBMITTED PHOTO

However, for low points, Car and Driver pointed out that the QX 80 “seems outdated compared to rivals.” I tend to agree, but not wholeheartedly. The German-made X7 and GLS have gone to smaller, more state-of-the-art engines that make up for the downsizing by adding a turbo charger or an electric battery EQ boost to give them more pep and better gas mileage. Additionally, inside the cabins, the German X7 and GLS seem to be a bit ahead of Infiniti when it comes to providing the latest infotainment and wide touch screen command center. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the operational functionality of Infiniti’s system, it just seems a bit dated with comparing it to what you get inside the X7 or GLS. However, all that being said, there is still room for the new Sensory model QX 80 if you are considering a full sized luxury SUV.

There is a distinct difference in the way that the German made X7 and GLS feel and drive when compared to the Japanese made Infiniti. The Infiniti offers a smoother, more airlike ride. With the German models you get a stiffer, more performance-oriented ride. Is one better than the other? Who is to say? The true test is in the eye of the beholder. You have to get in and test drive these models and see for yourself which is more to your liking. In case your were wondering just how big the QX 80 is, according to Infiniti’s spec sheet this vehicle has a wheelbase 121.1 inches, an overall length of 210.2 inches, a width of 79.9 inches and stands 75.8 inches high.

Monroe library could receive state funds to replace aging infrastructure By KATHY CHANG

Leah Wagner, director of the library, said the funds will go toward to replace an aging HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) unit, boiler and a fire alarm panel. “All are over 20 years old and need replacing,” she said. “Not very glamorous, but very necessary for the operation of the library.” Thirty-eight highly-rated projects from 16 counties across the state were recommended to the Legislature to receive funding from the act. Currently, $87.5 million is available to be distributed among these projects during this initial round. More than 129 applications were reviewed by a committee comprised of experts from across relevant state agencies, including the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Community Affairs, the New Jersey Treasury, and the New Jersey Historical

MONROE – The Monroe Public Library is on the list to potentially receive state funding for expansion and associated renovations. Gov. Phil Murphy delivered a list of proposed projects for the first round of funding from the Library Construction Bond Act (LCBA) to the Legislature on Nov. 5. The LCBA authorized $125 million in state bonds to fund critical improvements to New Jersey public libraries. The bond issuance was approved by New Jersey voters in November 2017 and all applicants were required to identify a 50% match to fund their proposed projects, according to information provided by the governor’s office. “Monroe was awarded $248,640,” said Stacey Kennedy, township public information officer. “It is a matching program so the township will match the funds.”

Commission, among others, according to the statement. “From major building renovations to vital technology upgrades, this bond program will transform our libraries to better serve and be more accessible to their local communities,” Murphy said in the statement. “I want to thank the state librarian [Mary Chute] and President [Dr. Merodie A.] Hancock at Thomas Edison State University, as well as our partner agencies, on their collaborative work toward this effort.” As required by statute, the state librarian, in consultation with the president of Thomas Edison State University, is responsible for the administration and oversight of the LCBA, according to the statement. The New Jersey Educational Facilities Authority will be assisting the state librarian to ensure compliance and the post-issuance work related to this bond. The proposed project list is currently pending review

with the Legislature. Once approved, appropriated funding will be granted to these projects. “New Jersey libraries continue to respond to the needs of our communities and are working tirelessly to bridge the digital divide and keep residents connected to many critical services which have become all the more essential in recent months,” Chute said in the statement. “We are eager to see local libraries break ground on these much-needed projects, which will make library facilities safer, more efficient, and more accessible for all people.” “I am thrilled New Jersey has made this investment in our valuable library infrastructure,” Hancock said in the statement. “The Library Construction Bond makes a significant impact through crucial library improvements that better serve our residents and support the educational and community priorities of the state.”
