ith the ballot results officially certified, Jacqueline Palmer has won 2,407 votes in the mayoral election to secure the open seat, which holds a four-year term. She will be Spotswood’s first female mayor. Mayor Edward Seely decided not to run for re-election. Incumbent Councilman Lawrence Kraemer won 1,215 votes. There were 460 total write-in votes. The total number of votes was 4,082, according to the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office, which certified the results on Nov. 20. “To be elected by the people into any position is exciting, but being part of creating history in our small town is truly amazing and humbling. he New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) has awarded the East Brunswick chief of police with its Accredited Chief/Command Executive (ACE) Certification Program Award. The NJSACOP awarded its highest certification status for a chief executive to Frank LoSacco, according to a prepared statement from the East Brunswick Police Department. Certification status lasts for three years. At the end of that period, command executives and chiefs of police must show they have maintained the training and leader-
ship standards since their initial award of certification, according to the statement. Achieving command executives join a select group – only 33% of state police chiefs are certified. LoSacco recently underwent peer reviews conducted by the NJSACOP’s ACE program and has successfully earned the aforementioned status, according to the statement. LoSacco started his career with the East Brunswick Police Department as a special law enforcement officer in 1987. He later graduated from the Ocean County Class II Special Police Officer Training Program in 1993. He was hired as a full-time police officer in East Brunswick in 1996 and completed the Somerset County Police
Academy. LoSacco has held a variety of assignments and risen through the ranks, ultimately being sworn in as chief on July 31, 2019, according to the statement. In 2013, he was a graduate of the Command and Leadership Program through NJSACOP. He has received multiple police instructor certifications and is currently an adjunct professor of Criminal Justice at Middlesex County College, according to the statement. He previously taught as an adjunct professor at Mercer County Community College, the County College of Morris, and Rutgers University, according to the

MCFOODS distributes 1,500 turkeys with help of community ‘Giants’
T
he Middlesex County Food Organization and Outreach Distribution Services (MCFOODS) received a donation of 1,500 Thanksgiving turkeys that were distributed to two dozen partner agencies throughout the county. The turkeys were delivered to MCFOODS’ distribution center on Kennedy Boulevard in East Brunswick on Nov. 19 by the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, who received the turkeys via Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express program. “In a year when food insecurity has increased sharply throughout the state and the rate of food insecurity among children has nearly doubled in Middlesex County, we are incredibly grateful for this donation,” Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in a statement provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. “Because of Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express program, thousands of Middlesex County residents can celebrate one of our country’s most beloved traditions: a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. On behalf of the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, I thank Stop & Shop for their donation, Community FoodBank of New Jersey for their coordination in this effort, and former New York Giants players Joe Morris, David Tyree, and Jonathan Casillas for their assistance in off-loading these turkeys at the MCFOODS Distribution Center this morning.”

Falls can be fatal for seniors
A
ccording to the National Council on Aging, “Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence and generate enormous economic and personal costs.” But those over 65 are not the only people who should be concerned with fall risk. A study including “105 people ages 18-80 tested their vestibular threshold (the smallest amount of motion their body could detect), the lower the threshold the better their vestibular system was functioning and the lower their fall risk. The researchers found
that the vestibular threshold in the people studied was increasingly higher after the age of 40. These thresholds increased up to 83 percent per decade after that age, the researchers said.” The fear of falling tends to be preceded by slow worsening of balance but tends to be followed by decreasing activity levels which in turn limit an individual’s ability to care for self and household, increases risk of injury and illness, and can lead to depression and anxiety related to movement. Balance is your body’s ability to main-
tain stable and upright positioning in standing, walking and sitting but it is multifactorial and therefore treatment of dysfunction can be challenging so it is important a complete evaluation is conducted. Impairments in your balance can be caused by any combination of dysfunction within the four systems that make it up: • Vision • Vestibular • Muscular Strength + Coordination • Proprioception (body awareness of where you are in space) There are two types of balance, static and dynamic, and it is important during your evaluation to determine what activities you are having difficulty with. balance can be sitting, standing and single task management while dynamic can include initiating movements, walking, transitioning and performing more than one task at a time. After a thorough evaluation of the history of your condition and the four systems of balance through objective measures, your doctor of physical therapy at ProFysio Physical Therapy will create a customized plan of care to improve range of motion, strength, coordination of musculature, static/dynamic balance limitations, and/or visual and vestibular strengthening to thereby improve your quality of life and reduce your fall risk.

Race for South River Borough Council very tight By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer
SOUTH RIVER – Republican Councilman James Gurchensky and Democrat Julie Meira have won the two open seats on the South River Borough Council. Gurchensky won 3,054 votes and Meira won 3,051 of the votes. Republican candidate David Rein won 2,933 votes and Democratic candidate Shawn Haussermann won 2,906 of the votes, according to the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office certified vote tallies on Nov. 20. “To tell you the truth, the process was very peculiar to people because they were just not accustomed to this particular situation. Of course, the situation dictated that we carried it on this way, but what can I say, the results were very slow coming in because there are over half a million people in Middlesex County who are eligible to vote so that really prolonged the process too,” Gurchensky said about this year’s vote-by-mail election. There were eight write-in votes, and the total number of votes was 11,951, according to the clerk’s office. “I’m happy with the results and at least
I can try to continue on with the work for South River. It’s an older town – that means a lot of tender love and care, it really does, the infrastructure is suffering that like in many communities in Middlesex County,” Gurchensky said. Rein said he is disappointed that he did not get the amount of votes needed to win a council seat, but at the same time it was a close race which could have gone a lot of different ways for any of the candidates. “I do feel that for myself since I was the only new candidate running this year. Not being able to campaign in person because of the COVID-19 situation hurt my chances to meet people from town and let them know what my ideas for South River were and are,” Rein said. “I could have possibly swayed enough independent voters to

get me over the hump in the voting. I wish the best for the two candidates that did win council seats and hope they do right for the people of South River over their terms.” “Looking to the future, I believe that the vote-by-mail process was a great success. I believe it can be streamlined to provide quicker tallying of the results. It provided a simple, easy and secure way for voters to cast their votes and addressed the problems presented by the COVID-19 crisis,” Haussermann said. “In South River, vote by mail represented about 90% of the total votes cast. That shows the confidence that residents had in the process. It was my first time voting by mail and I will be voting this way going forward.” Meira could not be reached by press time.

Martinho’s double overtime game-winner in regional final caps unbeaten season for Monroe boys soccer
By STEVEN BASSIN
Staff Writer
MONROE – Scoring the game-winning goal is a moment Zachary Martinho has always dreamed of. The senior forward on the Monroe Township High School boys soccer team got the opportunity to live the moment that he has always dreamed of when the Falcons squared off against Elizabeth High School on Nov. 21 in the Central East F, Group 4 Middlesex-Union regional final. As his family and classmates watched from the stands at Hugh P. Walsh Field, Martinho capped an unbeaten season for the Falcons by knocking home the gamewinning goal with 2:03 left in the second overtime period to propel Monroe to a regional title with a 3-2 victory over Elizabeth. “It’s something you always strive for and it has become a reality for me,” Martinho said on his game-winning goal. “It’s all surreal. It’s a moment that I’m going to remember for the rest of my life. It’s something I’m going to tell my kids someday. It’s awesome.” Monroe’s regional championship is its first statewide title since winning the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 championship in 2012. The Falcons captured the Greater Middlesex Conference title back in 2017. Always believing that his squad had the ability to have a special season this fall, Monroe Coach Steven MacKenzie was happy to see the hard work and dedication his players put in on and off the field this season culminate with winning a championship. “This was a fitting way to end it after everything these guys have done throughout the season,” MacKenzie said. “The way they attacked this season and attacked each day, I had a feeling we could do something special. We’re fortunate to be here and live in this moment. They deserve it.” MacKenzie said that he learned a lot while coaching during the coronavirus pandemic and credited his players for taking things in stride everyday and following all the rules. “These guys fought everyday and every time they stepped across the lines, they played the game like it was their last,” MacKenzie said. “They played the game the way it should be played. We prepared ourselves for this moment. They deserve
everything they get.” It was a battle for Monroe to win the regional title. Right off the bat, the Falcons saw themselves in a 1-0 hole as Jordy Zuniga scored the game’s first goal for Elizabeth in the fourth minute of the contest. Monroe got a golden opportunity to tie the contest with 16:23 left to play in the first half on a penalty kick and capitalized on it. Senior Tabi Essa scored his ninth goal of the season on his second-chance shot on net to tie the game at 1-1 and get Monroe back in the game. The Falcons once again got a penalty kick opportunity later on during the 68th minute off a hand ball by Elizabeth in the box. Junior Josh Cruz this time took the penalty kick for Monroe and just like Essa, Cruz was able to find the back of the net. The junior slapped in his ninth goal of the season and third goal in the last two games to give Monroe a 2-1 lead. “When I take penalty kicks, I don’t like looking at the goalie and giving him any chance to know where I’m going,” Cruz said. “I kept my composure. I kept looking at the ball. About half-way through, I looked at the corner and slid it in and the (goalie) went the wrong way.” Cruz finished his junior campaign with a team-high 14 assists. Monroe looked to be on its way to a regional title as it continued to lead by one with under three minutes to go in regulation, but Elizabeth didn’t go away quietly. Steven Zuniga struck for Elizabeth with 2:03 left to play to tie the game and ultimately force overtime. Both squads didn’t flinch in the first overtime period, signaling a second 10-minute period before penalty kicks would have to be used to determine a winner. Martinho made sure that wasn’t the case. Seeing the ball bounce to him in the box, the senior dribbled to his left and took a rip at the goal with his left foot. Thinking at first that he overhit the ball and that it was going to sail over the crossbar, Martinho instead saw his shot find the top-right corner of the net for the game-winner to help Monroe capture the regional title. “I was confident in my abilities to slide it right into the corner,” Martinho said.
STEVEN BASSIN/STAFF
The Monroe Township High School boys soccer team celebrates winning the Central East F, Group 4 Middlesex-Union regional championship with a 3-2 victory over Elizabeth on Nov. 21 in Monroe.
“We fought to death of it. We knew this was our last game and we gave it everything we got. This really means a lot to us. This (win) is huge for the program and puts us in the history books.” Martinho finishes the season with three goals and eight assists. Senior goalkeeper Nikhil Tangella recorded six saves in net for Monroe in the victory. Fellow senior teammate Christian Bernal tallied a team-high 19 goals this season for the Falcons and had nine assists. Being a four-year starter for Monroe, Bernal has been waiting to hoist a state championship since his freshman year and
couldn’t have been more ecstatic to help bring home a championship for the program in his last season as a Falcon. “It’s an amazing feeling,” Bernal said. “From the get-go we knew this could be a state championship team with the chemistry we had with each other. With determination and hard work, you can make anything happen. There’ve been multiple times where our season could’ve been at stake because of the pandemic, but we kept on working hard and here we are now as state champions.” Monroe finishes its unbeaten season with a record of 14-0-1.

The NJSACOP is a prestigious organization that provides excellent professional development and I plan to have the entire command staff of our police department achieve Accredited Command Executive Certification,” LoSacco said in the statement. The NJSACOP ACE Certification Program directly encourages New Jersey’s
law enforcement executives to attain sanctioned benchmarks in pursuit of a recommended standard for police leadership that are measurable and attainable. By offering proof of these standards to NJSACOP assessors, individual police leaders can attain NJSACOP’s ACE certification status, according to the statement. “The ACE certification program is in keeping with the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, the 21st Century Report and Recommendations on Policing and the state association’s declared philosophy; the Certification Program measures essential proofs in three areas for the ACE and

Kathy Kolupanowich received 6,269 votes and Michael Elgawly received 2,958 votes. There were 150 write-in votes. Incumbents Jill DeMaio and Steven Riback did not run for re-election. During the election, Belko ran on the Change We Need slate, Bierman ran on the Transparency Participation Integrity slate and Skurbe ran on the Premier Affordable Education slate. Skurbe said the election saw a record turnout of voters in Monroe Township and the community overwhelmingly voted for the change needed on the Board of Education (BOE). “As a board member, I am hopeful that we can work together as a team to get the support from the township, the mayor and our legislators to truly fight for fair state funding and stop the overbuilding of our community that continues to cripple our schools,” she said. “We need to move forward and make decisions in the best interest of education and not let political agendas get in the way. I am truly thankful to the residents of Monroe for putting their trust in me to help improve our school district. The students of Monroe are the true winners in the election.” Bierman said she is excited to have won a seat on the BOE. “I’m looking forward to learning the role and participating with an eye toward supporting fiscally conservative decision making,” she said. “I’m planning to support transparent communication protocols to help educate and engage our entire community in our district business. I hope to represent all our children and help secure for them the best education and support our resources can provide. Our voters chose the Change We Need candidates with a very high vote of confidence and the three of us are committed to serving our community, kids and educators to the best of our abilities.” During the election, Belko said her goal is for the communication of the board and administration to become “continual, upfront and honest.” “Our concern should be the parents and [for the] community [to] understand where the board stands on the important issues,” she said. “I will advocate for the board committee meetings to be videoed for review by the community, I will also advocate for our public comments to be open at a committee meeting. This BOE needs to also direct administration to increase open communication with parents and community members. I want to also see that our board meetings be not only videoed but livestreamed on an official Monroe Township BOE social media page.”
