Spotswood officials authorizes funds to demolish vacant house on Main St. By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

T

he Spotswood Borough Council approved a resolution authorizing the municipality to pay for the demolition of a vacant building located at 474 Main St. Earlier this year in January, the council approved a resolution to purchase the vacant property for $382,671. Mayor Edward Seely said the house located on the property is condemned, abandoned and covered in vegetation. It sits next to a PNC Bank across from the Spotswood Funeral Home. “The site work at 474 Main St. began in early November. The house and ancillary structures on the property have been demolished. The lot has been backfilled, graded and stabilized for the winter,” Borough Administrator Dawn McDonald said. Since purchasing the property, the council and Seely have committed to building a new firehouse at the request of Fire Chief Kevin Meade and residents.

With the plan to transform the property into a new firehouse, McDonald said it is anticipated that funds for the proposed project will be under consideration by the new administration as part of the 2021 capital budget. The mayor and the council have received correspondence from Center State Engineering recommending pay estimate No. 1 for work performed by JNP Excavating, LLC for a period from Oct. 26 to Nov. 9 for demolishing the vacant house, according to the council. The council approved the resolution on Dec. 7 during the council meeting via video conference. Center State Engineering advised that pay estimate No. 1 is for work performed by JNP Excavating, LLC for the 474 Main St. project thru Nov. 9, in the amount of $40,493, according to the council. The borough entered into a contract with JNP Excavating, LLC on July 29, according to the council. For more information, visit www. spotswoodboro.com/borough-council

DOT seeks to improve safety at Cranbury Circle By ANDREW HARRISON Staff Writer

The South River Department of Parks & Recreation held a holiday house decorating contest. From top: First place winner, the Castillo family, Jeffrie Avenue; second place winner, the DeSantis family, Grand Street; and third place winner, the Barna family, Caroline Drive.

he New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced a multi-stage years-long process to develop plans and construct improvements to Cranbury Circle. The Cranbury Circle intersection involves Route 130, Middlesex County County Road 539 (North Main Street) and Cranbury Turnpike, as well as Wyckoff Mill Road. South Main Street and Brick Yard Road are the roadways in Cranbury affected by the improvements. The project is currently in the concept develop phase and will cost more than $1.3 million. DOT estimates that preliminary

engineering will occur for the project in 2021-22 with final design of improvements developed in 2023-25. Construction would begin and finish through 2026-27, if no delays arise. The reason for the improvements is to improve safety at Cranbury Circle, according to information released by the DOT. DOT points to the significant traffic volumes, existing geometry of the circle, a high speed limit on Route 130 and skewed roadway approaches as prime conditions for vehicle crashes that exceed statewide averages. “Honestly, it could be lifesaving. After reviewing the DOT’s report with alarming accident rates back in 2014-16 when

South River will fund roof replacements, new fire truck By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

SOUTH RIVER – In order to fund roof replacements and the purchase of a new fire truck, the Borough Council adopted a $665,000 bond ordinance for various capital improvements. The various improvements that need to be performed include roof replacement at municipal buildings, the replacement of gas tanks and the purchase of a new fire truck. Chief Financial Officer Joseph Zanga said the borough is using $130,000 to replace the gas tanks and $40,000 will be

used to replace the roofs. “The funding for the architect is a little bit higher than we anticipated in the first ordinance we did, so this is the remainder of the money to try and get the roof project completed, and the fire truck is $530,000 in the bond,” Zanga said. The council adopted and approved the bond ordinance on Dec. 21 during the council meeting via video conference. While the total cost for the capital improvements is $700,000, the borough will make a $35,000 down payment to cover the remaining balance, according to the council.

This bond ordinance will take effect 20 days after publication after final adoption, as provided by the Local Bond Law, according to the council. In other news, the council approved a resolution authorizing the acceptance of a $1,010,750 bid from A.C. Shultes Inc. to replace water well number two. Borough Administrator Art Londensky said the current well failed to pump water from the level of 198 feet. The council had previously authorized and directed Borough Clerk Bill Bray to advertise for the receipt of sealed bids for replacement of well number two, accord-

ing to the council. Those bids were received on Dec. 3 and opened and read aloud in public and an examination shows that A.C. Shultes Inc. of Woodbury Heights was the low bidder with a submitted bid of $1,010,750, according to the council. Londensky said the borough has been using three water wells. The council approved the resolution accepting the bid from A.C. Shulttes Inc. on Dec. 21 during the council meeting. Weather permitting, Londensky said construction to replace the well will began as soon as possible.

D&R Greenway Land Trust releases new video featuring Babe Ruth’s granddaughter

L

ittle Leaguers and their families will be inspired by watching D&R Greenway’s latest video “Fields of Dreams” featuring sports and the outdoors in the starring role. Linda Ruth Tosetti, granddaughter of legendary home-run hitter Babe Ruth, tells personal stories about the Babe’s early life and how he became motivated to become a baseball player. “My grandfather looked up to Father Mathais, a mountain of a man, and Babe stood head and shoulders over the other kids,” Tosetti said in a prepared statement regarding her grandfather’s mentor at a Catholic school. Viewers are treated to historic photos of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor from Babe Ruth’s youth. Sports fans will hear the story of how he learned to throw. The video begins with D&R Greenway trustee James Fiorentino, an artist who has painted many of baseball’s legendary players. Fiorentino was the youngest artist ever to have his art featured in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, when he was only 15 years of age. Having begun his sports art career with Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, Fiorentino became a college baseball player himself, according to the statement. He talks about the connection he feels to the land

while outdoors in the field, and how important this is in forming a lifelong love of nature. Since 1989, D&R Greenway has permanently protected over 21,000 acres of land in central New Jersey. Fiorentino became vice chair of the Board of Trustees of the land trust in 2019, according to the statement. Farm View Fields and Greenway Meadows parks in Princeton were both saved from housing developments and preserved in 2001 through the leadership of D&R Greenway. These parks provide baseball and soccer fields, as well as places to walk and experience the outdoors, according to the statement. In the video, D&R Greenway’s President and CEO Linda Mead shares that being outdoors in nature cultivates creativity and calm in children who are known to have ADHD, according to the statement. The viewer learns that, in fact, Babe Ruth

may have had “nature-deficit disorder,” a term coined by author Richard Louv in his book “Last Child in the Woods” published in 2005. Tosetti insists that, throughout his legendary life, her grandfather was sustained by nature. “He was a fisherman and huntsman. That’s where he got his solace,” she said in the statement. During the past year, D&R Greenway partnered with the Trenton Thunder baseball team at Waterfront Park in Trenton where parts of the video were filmed. “The way many, many people connect with nature and the outdoors is through the sports their children play when they are young,” Mead said in the statement. High school students from the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund’s FUTURO program share how they feel when they are out in nature, according to the statement. These students have worked in partnership with D&R Greenway over the past year, learning about nature’s benefits, clean water and open spaces. In contrast to being indoors during the pandemic, these students’ words about “a good lost” while outside on a wide, open field will stick with the viewer for a long time. Information on the new 7-minute video “Fields of Dreams” can be found on D&R Greenway Land Trust’s website https:// drgreenway.org/

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe 4wd Premiere

A

few weeks ago, I reviewed the 2021 Toyota Tundra – a vehicle that gets a gas guzzling 14 miles per gallon. Charles Skinner, one of my readers, took exception to the fact that I reviewed a “gas guzzler.” Skinner wrote in his comments to the Princeton Packet: “He does not even hint that operating this gas guzzler – instead of a hybrid or electric vehicle – will accelerate climate change with egregious indirect costs that will be Peter Perrotta borne by human society and the natural world. “Why does Mr. Perrotta not mention the exacerbated forest fires, drought, melting ice caps, rising sea levels and extreme weather that are overwhelming points

against buying and operating this vehicle?” These are all points well taken, Mr. Skinner. However, my On The Road column is not meant to be a political or environmental commentary or statement on how automobiles affect climate change. Instead, it is more a reflection of what is being offered on the current auto market and to give the consumer some type of independent judgement on what to expect from the cars or trucks I review, if they so happen to be considering purchasing or leasing that particular model. That being said, if you go back over the past year you will also see that I have reviewed numerous hybrid, electric hybrid and purely electric vehicles. I used this as a preamble to this week’s column because I will be reviewing another vehicle which may be perceived as a “gas guzzler” type, the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe 4WD Premiere. While not as fuel thirsty as the Tundra, the Tahoe I recently drove for one week gets a non-eco-friendly 18 miles per gallon overall – 20 mpg in city driving and 16

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe 4wd Premiere

mpg around town. The EPA estimates that it will cost – on average – about $2,250 per year to run the Tahoe, as it uses about 5.6 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. Again, I reiterate, by reviewing this large, 3 row SUV, I am not advocating that it is good for the environment to own one or lease one. However, one can not deny that large SUVs and pickup trucks are popular in the United States. According to Chevrolet, the Tahoe is the best-selling full-sized SUV in the United States – a title Chevy claims it has held for the past 19 years. I wouldn’t be doing my job justice if I ignored this segment of the automotive market and only reviewed vehicles that were considered eco-friendly or safe. The Tahoe I drove for one week was powered by a 5.3 liter, ecotec3 V8 engine that produces about 355 horsepower at 383 pound feet of torque. Chevrolet will be making that Tahoe available with a more fuel efficient 3.0 liter I-6 diesel engine that puts out 277 horsepower and gets up to 28 miles per gallon on the highway. The Premiere edition Tahoe I drove has a base price of $65,600. My tester had a bottom line sticker price of $71,380 as it added $4,485 for a premium package and $1,295 for destination and delivery. Some of the items the premium package features include: power panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, enhanced emergency braking, multi color heads up display, advanced trailering system and an enhanced cooling radiator. The 2021 Tahoe features a newly redesigned exterior and interior, more cargo room behind the third row of seats, an in-

SUBMITTED PHOTO

dependent rear suspension, a 10.2-inch color touch screen, and up to nine available camera views. I like the aggressive new look on the redesigned Tahoe – both inside and out. There is plenty of room inside; this new Tahoe has a massive 122.9 cubic feet of cargo space with both the second and third row folded down. It also is a workhorse, featuring 8,400 pounds of trailering capability. While it took me a bit to get used to the overall bigness of this Tahoe – while driving it – once I did get used to it, I found it to be easy to handle, and quite comfortable. The new independent rear suspension is a winner in my book. Car and Driver gives the new Tahoe high marks for the cabin being “impressively quiet.” They add that the third row is “actually comfortable” and marveled at its ability to tow up to 8,400 pounds. On the other hand, Car and Driver called the new front end design “divisive,” said it featured some “questionable interior ergonomics” and said its top models cost too much. But, in the end, the editors at Car and Driver gave the Tahoe a positive rating, saying, “The new Tahoe is more spacious and sophisticated then before, which resolidifies its spot atop the large SUV class.” I would have to agree. I think that if you are considering going out to purchase or lease a large, three-row SUV, then one would be remiss if you didn’t include the Tahoe on your short list of SUVs to consider. Peter Perrotta’s On The Road column appears weekly. If you have questions or comments he can be reached at peter@capitalmotorcars.com

volumes were lower, I can understand the concern and sense of urgency to prioritize this,” Township Committeewoman Evelyn Spann said. From 2014-16 there were 94 total crash incidents in the circle, according to a presentation by DOT, which included crash data provided by the Cranbury Police Department. For the concept of the project the state has selected a preliminary preferred alternative (PPA), which would realign Brick Yard Road to intersect North Main Street at a 90 degree angle 700 feet south of the circle, which would occur in two phases, and install traffic metering signals along Route 130 northbound and southbound before the circle. “Relocating Brickyard Road is a must and adding two traffic metering stops will give motorist confidence they will get a break and no need to take any risks getting across,” Spann said. “Also, this alternative can begin immediately – which in government terms means within the next five years. I support the project and hope it gets through all of the approvals.” Additional improvements include widening of shoulder width at the intersection, widening of North Main Street approaching

the proposed intersection with the realignment of Brick Yard Road, and a stormwater management basin within the infield of the circle, according to DOT. “Cranbury Circle has been on every township committee’s radar and agenda to get fixed for the last 50 years. We came close in the ’80s and early ’90s to getting it done, but there was opposition from residents to the plan that resulted in the DOT pulling back and deciding to invest money elsewhere,” Township Committeeman Jay Taylor said. “The circle has been brought to our attention from a safety perspective from all of our first responders over the years.” Taylor credited former Mayor and Township Committeeman David Cook’s previous work in pushing for a plan and revision to DOT in addressing Cranbury Circle and stated that he is worried about the project being pulled at the last minute. Cranbury and DOT officials have encouraged residents to provide comments by email to the state agency to take part in the feedback process of the project. “With feedback any project has the opportunity to improve. Our volunteer fire squad serves accident after accident at the circle,” Spann said. “I am sure their voice would be useful.”

Additional information on the project can be found on the Cranbury Township website.
