New Jersey Attorney General’s Office assigns detective to investigate 2017 racist flier in Edison By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

The Have-A-Heart food drive challenges businesses, retail food service outlets, the hospitality industry, corporate businesses and offices, community associations, schools and residents to donate 214 pounds of food, or to contribute $214, to assist Woodbridge food pantries in their work providing food and meals to less fortunate residents and the homeless. The 2021 Have-A-Heart food drive ends on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, hence the 2/14 challenge. Pictured from left: Peggy Foley of St. James Food Pantry, Karen Barnes of theWoodbridge Metro Chamber of Commerce, Chief of Staff Caroline Ehrlich, Councilwoman Nancy Drumm, Paul Sansone of the Sansone Foundation, Peter Barcellona of We Feed Woodbridge, Mayor John E. McCormac, Councilwoman Debbie Meehan, Angie Tsirkas of Northfield Bank, Amy Krysienski of RSI Bank, Councilman Gregg Ficarra, Marlon Terrell of Chick-Fil-A, Morgan Eger of Wegmans and Pastor Leslie Samuel of Evangel Church.
p until recently it was not clear if the New Jersey Attorney General’s office was investigating the racist flier that was distributed by mail during the 2017 Edison Township Public Schools Board of Education election. Early on in the investigation, Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan had said the investigation was in the hands of the Attorney General’s (AG) office and a public information officer for the AG had said the office’s policy “is that we neither confirm nor deny investigations.” During a Committee of the Whole meeting on Jan. 20, Council President Robert Diehl said Mayor Thomas Lankey received a letter from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office informing the township the state AG’s Office has picked up the case and has assigned a detective to the case. “Last week we sent the AG’s Office and detective a letter asking for the status of the investigation,” he said “We also stated we were in possession of information we believed would be helpful. At this time we are awaiting a response.” Diehl said they had expected to receive additional information from Councilman Ajay Patil at the recent Committee of the Whole meeting.

WOODBRIDGE – The newly elected council president in Woodbridge said he urges respectful dialogue among all in the New Year. It willt take time and effort by all.” Also at the reorganization meeting,B Councilman Howie Bauer was nominatedD to serve as council vice president. r

WOODBRIDGE – Accomplishments from the re-opening of Woodbridge Middle ySchool after renovations and the creation of the district’s first diversity and equity officer could not have been done without teamwork. Vaccine mega-site opens at convention center in Edison
M
iddlesex County and RWJBarnabas Health officials joined New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy in opening the Middlesex County Regional COVID-19 Vaccine Mega-Site in Edison on Jan. 15 at the New Jersey Convention & Exposition Center. The Edison vaccination mega-site is equipped with 20 vaccination stations and will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Administration of up to 2,400 COVID-19 vaccinations can occur at the site per day to qualified individuals as per the state’s priority guidelines, which now include individuals ages 65 and up, according to information provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communications. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, both currently granted with Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA, will be administered at the site. Qualified individuals must pre-register online for an appointment to receive the vaccine at covid19.nj.gov. “We are pleased that Middlesex County has been selected as a vaccine mega-site destination and are proud to partner with a trusted name in healthcare, RWJBarnabas Health and the state on this historic effort,” County Commissioner Director, Ronald G. Rios, said in the statement. “Our county is fully equipped to provide the necessary resources and advanced infrastructure to deploy the COVID-19 vaccine safely and efficiently both at the mega-site and at our own vaccination sites. This vaccine is a powerful blow to the pandemic, but we need to continue to remain vigilant by wearing masks, socially distancing, and maintaining good hand hygiene.” “We are proud to partner with Middlesex County and Gov. Murphy in [setting] up this vaccination site here in Edison,” Barry H. Ostrowsky, president and chief executive officer for RWJBarnabas Health, said in the statement. “This mega-site represents the next vital step in getting this vaccine out into our communities so that we can turn the corner in this vicious battle against the virus and make our communities healthier.” The mega-site is currently vaccinating healthcare workers, staff and residents of long-term care facilities, members of law enforcement and emergency responders including police officers and firefighters. Also included are individuals over the age of 65 and those with certain chronic medi-

Patil had met with Diehl, Councilman Alvaro Gomez and United States Postal Inspector David Comer on Nov. 5. He had relayed information stating he allegedly knew who was responsible for the flier and shared names and roles of people allegedly involved. Patil also stated he was “not a creator, a facilitator, he did not distribute the flier … he was more or less a bystander,” Diehl said. The committee welcomed Patil to share the information with the community. Rather than testify under oath Patil submitted an official statement before the Committee of the Whole meeting on Jan. 20. Diehl said the official statement and the information relayed at the meeting on Nov. 5 have caused a bit of confusion because they are allegedly different. Patil has told the committee he has retained legal counsel and would like to set up a meeting, Diehl said. “We feel at this time that’s the best course of action to meet with Councilman Patil and give him an opportunity to share with us what he actually knows,” Diehl said, adding they will set up a meeting as early as next week. Since May 2019, the Township Council, through a Committee of the Whole, has been conducting its own investigation through fact-finding public meetings, questioning candidates from the 2017 Board of

Education, Township Council and mayoral elections, people who helped with the campaigns, and people involved in the investigation. All of the people have been subpoenaed to appear before the committee. One main question remains – who distributed the racist flier by mail on Oct. 31, 2017, which had the faces of the two candidates, Jerry Shi and Falguni Patel, who are of Asian descent. The flier stated “Make Edison Great Again” and underneath each photo was the word “Deport.” At a Committee of the Whole meeting in November, the committee read Comer’s report verbatim, which named six members of the community who were allegedly involved in assembling or mailing the flier: Satish Poondi, the legal adviser for the Indian Business Association who previously served on the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Community Relations in Edison; Raj Bhagia; Mohin Patel; Patil; Board of Education member Jerry Shi; and Shariq Ahmad, the former chairman of the Edison Democratic Organization. Since the meeting, Shi, Patil and Ahmad have denied their involvement with the racist fliers. Township Council members unanimously approved the formation of the Committee of the Whole at a meeting on Feb. 27, 2019. Forming the committee allows council members to meet outside the parameters of a typical council meeting without violating Robert’s Rules, which determines how governing bodies operate. Diehl spearheads the committee with Gomez and Councilman Sam Joshi.

Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
