Edison Public Schools will transition back to in-person hybrid model March 1 By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
A
midst ongoing COVID-19 safety concerns in the community, the Edison Public School District has pushed the date to transition back to its in-person hybrid instructional model to March 1. “We believe that is the best course of action,” Schools Superintendent Bernard Bragen said, adding the decision was in consultation with the Edison Department
of Health and Edison Board of Education (BOE). The district transitioned to fully remote learning on Dec. 7 due to rising cases of the coronavirus. Hybrid in-person learning began on Oct. 19. Bragen announced the decision at a BOE meeting on Jan. 26. He sent correspondence to parents and guardians on Jan. 27. (Continued on page 11)

Monoclonal antibody treatment Right at Home forms non-profit available for Chelsea residents to ‘Smash Out’ Alzheimer’s Chelsea Senior Living will be among the first assisted living companies in New Jersey to make on-site monoclonal antibody (mAb) treatments available to residents symptomatic with COVID-19. This allows the affected residents to avoid a hospital trip while receiving a treatment that has been effective in reducing symptoms, according to information provided by Chelsea. MAb are laboratory-made proteins that mimic the immune system’s ability to fight off harmful pathogens such as viruses. They were given Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the Food and Drug Administration in November. MAb therapy, given by infusion, is not a cure for COVID-19 and is not a substitute for the vaccine. “The impact the mAb has had on our patients has been nothing short of remarkable,” John Hopkins, DO, CCS Healthcare, said in the statement. “This is a game changing medication in the fight against
COVID. It truly saves lives.” “While we have worked hard to minimize infection in our communities, we are still dealing with isolated outbreaks,” Pat Banta, BSN/MA, regional director of Health Services for Chelsea Senior Living, said in the statement. “Our partners at CCS Healthcare provide the monoclonal antibody infusion with expert monitoring during and after the infusion at the assisted living community to residents who have confirmed COVID-19 infection and who fit the criteria for therapy. It reduces the likelihood of developing severe illness requiring the need for hospitalization, can provide short term immunity and reduces the risk of infection transmission.” Chelsea residents and staff are currently receiving the COVID vaccination at the company’s 21 residences in New Jersey and New York. However, screening, testing, masking and social distancing will continue into 2021.

mash Out Alzheimer’s Foundation has been established as the official charity of Right at Home of Central New Jersey. For many years, Beth Sholom, owner and executive director of Right at Home – who is the founder and CEO of the Smash Out Alzheimer’s Foundation – has raised money for various Alzheimer’s charities in order to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases, according to information provided by the company. She has organized and hosted two “Smash Out Alzheimer’s” events, the first in 2017 and the second in 2019. Both events included decorating pumpkins, gift baskets that were auctioned off, refreshments, pumpkin smashing, live music, and local vendors and artisans selling seasonal and holiday merchandise. The end result of both events was not only raising awareness of the need for more research into finding a cure for Alzheimer’s but – thanks to all who attended, donated, participated and entertained –
raising many thousands of dollars which was donated to Alzheimer’s New Jersey, according to the statement. Prior to both of Smash Out Alzheimer’s events, the group completed in-person and online fundraisers, including partnering with such companies as Yankee Candle, Pampered Chef and LuLaRoe. This past summer, the “Shed the COVID-19” fundraising event asked participants to commit to donating $1 for every pound they lost over a 2-month period, with all monies being donated to Alzheimer’s New Jersey. Because so many of Right at Home of Central New Jersey’s past and present clients suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, Sholom decided to form a 501c3 tax-exempt organization to be able to raise funds for Alzheimer’srelated organizations on an ongoing basis all year long, according to the statement. he Educational Services Commission of New Jersey (ESCNJ), the largest educational service commission in the state, announced the appointment of three new members to its Board of Directors: Dr. Gina Villani, Dr. Bernard Bragen, Jr. and Brian Glassberg. “We are fortunate to have a very proactive board that is fully committed to serving students with severe disabilities and behavioral challenges,” ESCNJ Schools Superintendent Mark Finkelstein said in a prepared statement. “As we navigate through this lingering pandemic and push for in-school instruction as much as possible, we need the input of educational leaders and innovators. Our three new board members are ideal in this realm and we warmly welcome them to help chart our future.” Dr. Gina Villani began her tenure as the superintendent of the Jamesburg Public Schools in December, bringing years of experience in educational administration. She has held the position of superintendent in a PreK-8 district as well as assistant superintendent in two different districts serving grades PreK-12. She has also served as

Area Girl Scouts learn in giving, you receive
A
core character pillar in Girl Scouts is civic responsibility. That is why so many Girl Scouts in Central and Southern New Jersey choose communitybased projects when they work to earn badges and awards. The holiday season was no exception. The Girl Scouts of Troop 81430 in North Brunswick chose to take on a project that would help some of the most disadvantaged children in the community. The girls of Troop 81430 know how much joy the holiday season brings to them and their families. They wanted to bring the same type of joy to other children. The troop collected personal funds and asked for donations from family and friends. They used this money to purchase holiday gifts for the families staying at the Ozanam Family Shelter in Edison. The Ozanam Family Shelter provides shelter for 16 single women and 26 families. Services include temporary and emergency lodging, meals, physical and mental health assessments, crisis counseling, assistance with housing, employment and
children’s educational placement, case management and referrals. The girls were so excited to go shopping and imagined how happy the children would be when they saw their gifts. What the girls learned, is that they too received a gift. The staff at Ozanam Family Shelter explained how their act of kindness would have deep meaning to these residents. Their hearts will be warmed knowing that someone else in the community was thinking about them and took action. Troop 81430 includes Amaly Safri, a seventh grade cadette from Sayreville Middle School; Hana Elsayed, an eighth grade cadette from North Brunswick Middle School; Sarah Abujazar, a seventh grade cadette from North Brunswick Middle School; Mariam Abujazar, a ninth grade senior from North Brunswick Township High School; and Saida Tigharghar, the troop leader for the past four years. • This article was submitted by the Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey

YMCA teaches water safety
A
s part of the YMCA’s commitment to reduce drowning rates and keep children safe in and around the water, the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy (MEWSA) will provide scholarships for swim instruction and water safety to children from underserved communities in our service areas. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fatal drowning is the second-leading cause of death for children ages 1-14 years old. In ethnically diverse communities, the youth drowning rate is two to three times higher than the national average, according to a USA Swimming study. Additionally, 64% of African American children, 45% of Latino children, and 40% of Caucasian children have no or low swimming ability, according to information provided by the YMCA of MEWSA. “Educating children how to be safe around water is just as important as teach-
ing them to look both ways before they cross the street,” Rose Cushing, president and CEO of the YMCA of MEWSA, said in the statement. “The Y’s teaches children of all ages and backgrounds that water should be fun, not feared, and this practice not only saves lives it builds confidence.” The Y believes this is especially true following 2020’s COVID-19 shutdowns. “We know there are children in our community who are now more at risk due to the need to maintain social distancing in 2020 and we want to make every effort we can to reach those kids this year,” Cushing said in the statement. In order to maintain a safe and healthy environment while COVID-19 is still present, the Y is limiting the number of people in the pool at any one time through a reservation system, having instructors teach from the deck during classes, and having all staff and volunteers wear face masks and face shields. There are a variety of programs to

Vikas Matta, left, urged his friend Ariel Guzman to attend college after serving in the Marines.
It takes a laptop: Urging on a friend’s education The following story was provided by Middlesex College. This is a story of friendship. It is also a story of compassion. And, if truth be told, also of a bit of nagging. Vikas Matta and Ariel Guzman met at Piscataway Vo-Tech and became fast friends. That continued even when Guzman joined the U.S. Marines in 2010, through 10 years in active service, and while Matta sold cars, trying to figure out what to do with his life. Matta, who is from Iselin, decided college was in his future, and came to Middlesex County College in 2017. He thrived there, graduating with high honors in 2019 with a degree in Liberal Arts/Business. He immersed himself in college – joining Quo Vadis, the school newspaper; Democracy House, the service-learning program; Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges; and College Assembly, the body that makes recommendations to the College president about policy. He was recently named a recipient of the New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Awards, based on his extraordinary volunteerism and public service. Matta transferred to Rutgers New Brunswick, majoring in business. In late 2020, he was awarded a Bank of New York Mellon scholarship. All the while, he was nagging Guzman about coming to college. Guzman wasn’t
particularly interested, but Matta persisted. Guzman left active service last year, and he was exploring career options over the summer. “I’ve been trying to persuade him to go to college for a while,” Matta said. “So in November or December, I did the application and paid his application fee.” But there was a catch. Guzman didn’t have a laptop. So Matta took part of his scholarship money and bought one for him. “He was complaining about having to buy a laptop,” Matta said. “So I said, ‘If that’s the issue, I’ll buy it for you. I hope this will help in bringing you one step closer to your goal.’ I hope he can keep furthering his education. And I hope this pushes other veterans to come to college as well.” In fact, Matta is considering donating a laptop per year to deserving students at Middlesex College. Guzman, who grew up in Perth Amboy but who now lives in Edison, is now a sergeant in the Marine Reserves. He is also a student in the Business program at Middlesex. “Vikas is something else,” Guzman said. “He’s the type of person – he wants everybody around him to succeed. He wouldn’t be content with having a dollar in his pocket if the person next to him doesn’t have one. He’s the type of person who will always be there for you. You can rely on him 110 percent.”

ing. Making a few lifestyle changes can be incredibly beneficial in lowering your risk of heart disease. This includes changing your diet to include more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, chicken, fish, and low-fat dairy products; incorporating more activity into your daily life; and seeing your doctor annually for a checkup. Heart disease in women. Many believe that most heart attacks occur in men, but heart disease is also the
number one killer of women. That’s why the American Heart Association established an initiative called Go Red for Women. Go Red for Women advises women not to overlook the risk of heart attack. Women should have routine doctor visits, check their blood pressure and cholesterol to be sure both are in a healthy range, stop smoking, exercise, and eat a healthy diet. The warning signs of a heart attack can be different for women than for men, so it’s important not to ignore signs like unusual fatigue, sweating or shortness of breath, and neck, jaw, and back pain.

Help is available. It’s important to acknowledge that our lifestyles have changed over the years. Americans are working longer hours, often behind a desk, and this increasingly sedentary lifestyle doesn’t help. The stress of working one or more jobs and raising a family – combined with the stress of everyday life – can take a toll. Added to that, many people do not always take the time, nor have the resources, to maintain healthy habits such as routine medical visits, eating right, and staying active. If this scenario sounds familiar, it’s important to remember that there are programs available to help you achieve a healthier life. Middlesex County offers programs that
help provide screenings and education on health and wellness services for County residents. You can find information about these programs at www.middlesexcountynj.gov/ or by contacting the Middlesex County Office of Health Services at 732745-3100 for assistance. In addition to following the American Heart Association’s advice regarding eating a healthy diet and being active, I can’t stress enough the importance of regular checkups – regardless of your age. Andrew Hallock, 75, of the Fords section of Woodbridge, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Director Robert Hubner of the Woodbridge Police Department. The initial investigation conducted by Officer Bryan Dorward of the Woodbridge Police Department and Detective Jonathan
Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that, on Jan. 4, at approximately 1:36 p.m., a Toyota Tundra traveling southbound on Hoy Avenue reportedly crossed over the curb at the intersection of New Brunswick Avenue and Hoy Avenue, according to the statement. The Tundra then reportedly passed into an adjacent parking lot where it struck Mary Ann Logozio, 61, of Fords. Logozio was pronounced dead at the scene. Anyone with information should call Dorward at 732-634-7700, ext. 2153 or Berman at 732-745-4328.
Edison man admits he resold concert tickets, defrauded investors An Edison man admitted participating in a fraudulent scheme that involved soliciting investments from victims for a ticket resale business, when in fact he diverted their investments for his own personal use and benefit. Jeffrey Burd, 61, of Edison, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton to an information charging him with one count of wire fraud, according to information provided by Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig on Jan. 28. According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court, from January 2014 to June 2018, Burd represented to his victims that he was involved in buying tickets to high-profile concerts, sporting events, and Broadway shows and then reselling those tickets for a profit. Burd induced the victims to provide him with money that would purportedly be invested in his ticket purchase and resale activities, and he represented that the profits from the sales of those tickets would be shared among him and the victims, accord-
ing to the statement. Burd further assured the victims that investing with him carried no risk, and he promised returns on their investments of 30-40%. Burd made payments to certain victims that were purportedly their profits, and made representations to certain victims that portions of their profits were being reinvested in additional ticket deals, which in turn purportedly would generate more profits for those victim. In fact, Burd did not purchase or sell any material amount of tickets with the victims’ money, and he instead used their investments for his personal expenditures, according to the statement. In total, Burd obtained approximately $447,000 from the victims over the course of the fraudulent scheme. The charge of wire fraud carries a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, or twice the gross amount of gain or loss from the offense, whichever is greater. Sentencing is scheduled for June 8.
An Edison man was sentenced for the murder of a 23-year-old New Brunswick man who he fatally shot in the city two years ago. Christopher “C-Dub” Thompson, 29, of Edison, was sentenced by Judge Thomas J. Buck to 30 years in prison for the murder of Larenz O’Garro in October 2018. Thompson was sentenced to an additional eight years in prison for the attempted murder of another man, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone on Jan. 14. This term is subject to the No Early Release Act, meaning he must serve 85% before being eligible for parole, according to the statement. Thomson was also sentenced for his unlawful possession of a handgun, and the hindering of his own apprehension for fleeing to Georgia after the murder, according to the statement. Those sentences are to run concurrent to the murder and attempted murder. He was also convicted of possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose. Thompson was also separately sentenced to 10 years in prison for being a certain person not to be in possession of a handgun due to a prior conviction with a five-year period of parole ineligibility, ac-
cording to the statement. In total, Thompson will have to serve 41 years and eight months of his 48-year sentence before he is eligible for parole. At trial, Executive First Assistant Prosecutor Bina Desai and Assistant Prosecutor Deanna Himelson presented evidence and testimony establishing that, on Oct. 26, 2018, Thompson fatally shot O’Garro shortly after an altercation involving the second victim and codefendant Eric “EZ” Inman who was ultimately sentenced to three years in prison, according to the statement. Thompson fled after the shooting, leading to an extensive search which included the coordinated efforts of the U.S. Marshals Service, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, and the New Brunswick Police Department. On Nov. 15, 2018, members of the U.S Marshals Service apprehended Thompson in Lithonia, Georgia. Thompson and Inman were charged after an investigation by Detective Kenneth Abode of the New Brunswick Police Department and Sgt. David Abromaitis of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. Agent Jennifer Morelli and Victim Witness Counselor Marlene Valdez were also vital to the prosecution, according to the statement.

“We don’t do these decisions lightly,” he said. In a survey for the third marking period – with about 15,000 students responding out of almost 17,000 students – 19.5% of students selected the option for the hybrid in-person model. “That means more than 80% [of students] are choosing to stay home whether we are open or not,” Bragen said. “That’s a vast majority of our families and to ignore them to come in and make it more difficult for everyone in the hybrid model when there’s still some safety concerns in the community is just not prudent.” Bragen said as they continue with fully remote learning, the district is providing as much support for students in Zoom environments for the older students and the SeeSaw environments for the younger students. Members of the community can nominate a fellow New Jerseyan and give him or her the chance to be recognized for their service. They are people who help others in need, give their time and energy to solve community problems, and put others above themselves. Each year, the Making a Difference Award presents $50,000 to one winner, $25,000 to two runners-up, and up to $7,500 to several others at a ceremony hosted by Ramapo College of New Jersey, which manages the awards program on behalf of the Russell Berrie Foundation. Awards will be presented at a virtual ceremony in May. The nomination form is available online at berrieawards.ramapo.edu.

for several years, non-consecutively. The Inglesino, Webster, Wyciskala & Taylor LLC Law Firm in Parsippany began serving as special counsel in the area of special education for the district at $160 an hour on Feb. 1. Their contract runs through Jan. 31, 2022. Schools Superintendent Bernard Bragen said “the BOE, when considering the size and scope of legal work required for a district as large as the Edison Public Schools, thought it prudent to appoint both a general counsel and a specific counsel for special education matters. “Due to the unique aspects of special education law, this is common in many districts and the most effective way to utilize our legal resources,” he said. “It is not uncommon for school districts to retain separate legal counsel for special education matters.”
