Audio recording points to those allegedly responsible for racist flier in Edison By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

M

ayor Thomas Lankey and Councilman Robert Diehl have appealed to the New Jersey Attorney General’s office and/or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office to step in and bring those responsible for the racist flier that was distributed by mail during the 2017 Edison Township Public Schools Board of Education election to justice. Lankey and Diehl expressed frustration with the lack of movement in the case at a press conference on March 3. “It is frustrating to have this event that occurred three years ago and to this day not have uncovered and determined who is responsible,” Lankey said. “I applaud our [Township] Council and Committee of the Whole. Without them, honestly, I don’t think we would have gotten to where we are today and we just need to help them bring it over the goal line, to finish.” Early on in the investigation, Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan had said the investigation was in the hands of the Attorney General’s (AG) office and a public information officer for the AG had said the office’s policy “is that we neither confirm nor deny investigations.” In January, Diehl said the mayor received a letter from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office informing the township the state AG’s Office had picked up the case and has assigned a detective to the case. Since May 2019, the Township Council, through a Committee of the Whole, has been conducting its own investigation through fact-finding public meetings, ques-

tioning candidates from the 2017 Board of Education (BOE), Township Council and mayoral elections, people who helped with the campaigns, and people involved in the investigation. All of the people have been subpoenaed to appear before the committee. One main question remains – who distributed the racist flier by mail on Oct. 31, 2017, which had the faces of the two candidates, Jerry Shi and Falguni Patel, who are of Asian descent. The flier stated “Make Edison Great Again” and underneath each photo was the word “Deport.” At a Committee of the Whole meeting in November 2020, the committee read United States Postal Inspector David Comer’s report verbatim, which named six members of the community who were allegedly involved in assembling or mailing the flier: Satish Poondi, the legal adviser for the Indian Business Association who previously served on the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Community Relations in Edison; Raj Bhagia; Mohin Patel, who is now an Edison BOE member; Councilman Ajay Patil; BOE member Jerry Shi; and Shariq Ahmad, the former chairman of the Edison Democratic Organization. Since the meeting, Shi, Patil and Ahmad have denied their involvement with the racist fliers. Lankey called for the press conference after an audio recording obtained by the media was released of a conversation among Patil; Chandrakant Patel, founder of Chowpatty Restaurant in Iselin; and Indian Business Association president Dhiren Amin.

ctor and comedian Tracy Morgan presented the Tracy Morgan Award for Excellence in Rehabilitation Nursing to a nurse who has been working to heal patients with brain injuries for more than two decades. In a virtual event held to recognize Brain Injury Awareness Month, Morgan congratulated Patricia Bosompem, RN, CRRN, on being this year’s recipient. Bosompem is an experienced brain injury nurse at Hackensack Meridian JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. “Congratulations, Patricia, and thank you for all you do for patients. Thank God for you and nurses like you,” Morgan said during the event on Feb. 25. “You all told me, ‘Trust in the doctors, trust in the nurses, trust in the process and you will get better.’ You trust and you can get better.” Bosompem said she was honored and will continue to share the inspiring story of Morgan’s recovery with her patients. “I remember I saw you on TV and I thought, ‘Wow, I did something to change a person’s life,’ ” Bosompem said during the event. “We do that every day on the Brain Trauma Unit. When people have a brain injury, they may be confused, or agitated. We find ways to help them. Sometimes they come back to see us, and it’s so fulfilling.”

Bosompem was among the nurses at the JFK Johnson Brain Trauma Unit who cared for Morgan after the comedian was seriously injured and in a coma for two weeks following a 2014 accident on the New Jersey Turnpike. In the virtual event, Morgan was at times overcome with emotion and gratitude for his care, especially when he was asked how he felt being an inspiration to others with brain injuries. “If I can be an inspiration to someone, that’s so big and I will gladly take on the challenge,” Morgan said during the event.

“I believe my life was spared for that reason. I know it can be very traumatizing when you or a family member has a brain injury. But you can overcome it. You can get better. … You have to fight to get better and have a great support system. I had great nurses and doctors. I had the best in the world.” Since Morgan’s recovery, he has returned to comedy as well as to producing and acting. Glen Campbell’s daughter will hold virtual program on Alzheimer’s disease

Ashley Campbell, the youngest child of Kim Campbell and country music legend Glen Campbell, is an accomplished singer, songwriter and musician. However, she put her own career and life on hold when her father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Ashley Campbell joined her father on his goodbye tour in 2011-12. “I can’t even put into words how priceless it was for me to be able to perform with my dad,” Ashley Campbell said in a statement provided by Artis Senior Living of Princeton Junction, which will hold a virtual talk with Campbell March 23. “I had the best seat in the house, being right there on stage with him every night. Watching him was the ultimate lesson in sharing joy and experiences through music.” She was at her father’s side until he eventually lost his battle with Alzheimer’s. Since her father’s death in 2017, Ashley Campbell has dedicated her life to her musical career and to sharing the impact of her

family’s journey with Alzheimer’s. She reinforces the importance of caring for the caregiver, those who are oftentimes neglected, according to the statement. Ashley Campbell will take part in a virtual program, “I’ll Do The Remembering: A Daughter’s Journey Through Alzheimer’s,” at 5:30 p.m. March 23 via Zoom. The program will offer strategies on how to help loved ones and family navigate the journey that is Alzheimer’s.

Artis of Princeton Junction, a memory care residence, offers the following caregiver tips to families to ease the frustration and worry so often associated with the disease: • Become informed about the disease. Knowing the symptoms and course of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as treatment options, will help the caregiver feel more in control. Initiate discussions with the patient’s physician, attend seminars and read

literature to become educated. • Make a Plan: Fully research the kind of care a loved one will receive before a crisis situation occurs. • Consider joining a caregiver support group to share concerns and caregiving tips. Those interested in attending Campbell’s talk should RSVP by March 22. Call 609-454-3360 or visit TheArtisWay.com/ Princeton

Metuchen Parade Commission delivers successful parade activities By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

METUCHEN – No one could have foreseen what was to come when the Metuchen Parade Commission was formed, through ordinance, in October 2019. The novel coronavirus pandemic in March 2020 threw a curveball into centurylong traditions of the annual Memorial Day

Parade and Winter Festival Parade. However, that did not deter the five-member commission – Patricia Lucas-Schnarre, who served as chair in 2020, Jamie Schleck, Lynne Mueller, Brendan Flynn and Ellen Regan – from organizing fun, safe, socially distanced events for the community during the year of uncertainties. Mayor Jonathan Busch serves as liaison to the commission, which took over putting

parades were quite different than we had envisioned when the ordinance was created. The real spirit of the Metuchen community really shined through. Both the Memorial Day Parade and Winter Festival parade activities were truly collaborative events. It’s what makes Metuchen really special.” In May 2020, early on in the COVID-19 lockdown, the parade commission, with many volunteers, acted as an organizer for the Memorial Day events, which included an art contest, a rolling parade with key borough departments of fire, police, emergency medical services and public works (DPW) and a Memorial Park ceremony organized by American Legion Post 65.

“[The events] were all done on a bare bones budget because we really had no idea what was happening day to day,” LucasSchnarre said, adding they were “rolling with the punches.” Residents watched the parade in person or on social media, which received 6,000 views on Facebook. Some 134 children submitted posters for the art contest. Finalist posters were printed and hung along business windows on Main Street. For the Winter Festival Parade, the commission formed Metuchen Lights and a Winterfest weekend, which included a tree and menorah lighting and a surprise visit from Santa Claus. “Our focus was to maintain a safe week-

end of involvement,” Lucas-Schnarre said. Metuchen Lights, which was funded by private donations and a portion of the parade commission’s budget, was a collaboration also including the Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce and the Metuchen Downtown Alliance (MDA). tiatives. “First is the formal training we give to faculty and staff that allows them to understand what our military-affiliated students have been through,” he said in the statement. “We also offer academic advising, tutoring, and we have a VetsSuccess counselor on campus. All this helps our students succeed, and it also alleviates stress as they map out their future.” Another plus is the Veterans and Servicemembers Association, a student organization that develops extracurricular activities for veterans and promotes community service opportunities, according to the statement. In the past the group has visited veterans in local nursing homes and participated in Operation Shoebox, in which they packed food and hygiene items that were delivered to troops overseas. Kayla Lopez, national director of military partnerships for the Military Friendly program, said schools that achieve this designation have much of which to be proud. “Military Friendly is committed to transparency and providing consistent data-driven standards in our designation process,” she said in the statement. “This creates a competitive atmosphere that encourages colleges to consistently evolve and invest in their programs. Schools who achieve designation show true commitment and dedication in their efforts. Our standards assist schools by providing a benchmark that promotes positive educational outcomes, resources, and support services that better the educational landscape and provide opportunity for the military community.”

For a complete list of community announcements, visit emsentinel.com or www.centraljersey.com. Any calendar items not appearing in the printed version of the newspaper will appear online. To submit an event for publication, send details via email to news@ emsentinel.com. The deadline for submissions is noon on Thursday.

For 2021, Regan is leading the commission. Lucas-Schnarre said they will move forward into the new year and make some changes to what they learned from last year’s events. “No one thought we would be in this situation we are now, but we did it last year so we’ll take what we learned and bring the same sense of fun and parade activities to Metuchen again in 2021,” she said.

Middlesex College earns 2021-22 Military Friendly Designation

iddlesex College has earned the 2021-22 Military Friendly School designation. The list was developed by Viqtory ) Media, which annually highlights colleges, universities and employers that are military friendly. Institutions earning the Military Friendly School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. Over 1,200 schools participated in the 2021-22 survey with 747 earning the designation, according to information provided by Middlesex College. The 2021-22 Military Friendly Schools list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine and can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com. Ratings measured the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans. Michael Barany, coordinator of the Middlesex College Veterans Center, said he was proud of the designation, which the college has earned numerous times, and he was grateful for the generous support of the Willard T.C. Johnson Foundation, which has funded the center since its inception in 2012, according to the statement. “The foundation has allowed us to make a huge difference in the lives of these men and women,” he said in the statement. “I’m so proud of them and their success.” Barany highlighted several center ini-

Edison mayor to focus on school overcrowding, opioid issues in the community during 2021 F By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

focus on continuing to address overcrowding issues with the Edison Public Schools and helping combat opioid problems in the community are at the forefront as Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey looks to move the township forward in 2021. He said strategic partnerships and teamwork are important to achieve the focal points, which have already begun.

Johnson for helping him reclaim his gift for comedy. “God gave me a business and y’all helped me take care of it. I will always be grateful to you and the staff,” he said during the event. He was asked how humor helped in his recovery. “It’s the greatest medicine,” he said during the event. “Everything that ever happened to me that was bad I turned funny. … So, you know, I guess it helps the brain

Lankey addressed the Edison Chamber of Commerce in the 30th State of the Township Address at the Pines Manor on Feb. 25. He said a committee has been set up with himself, members of Edison Board of Education, Schools Superintendent Bernard Bragen and members of the Township Council to try to find a solution to the overcrowding issues with the Edison Public Schools. Officials are discussing properties including the Dorothy K. Drwal Stelton

Community Center on Plainfield Avenue and the former Camp Kilmer Army base to help alleviate overcrowding issues. Lankey said he has signed some partnerships and brought on additional staff to combat the opioid problems in the community. He said 2020 was a difficult year with the novel coronavirus pandemic and some of the 13 goals laid out for the year had to be put on hold including construction of a new community center and some improvements to township parks.

However, many goals were met. Sev- ( enty-one roads were resurfaced; 50 new hires were made between the police and fire departments; improvements to some parks; construction of cricket pitches at fields; and work on infrastructure improvements with the state and county continue for the Route 287 North access ramp between Edison and Metuchen. Lankey said officials are also working on finding a dedicated building for the water and sewer departments.

That’s a beautiful thing.” After his recovery, the comedian publicly thanked Dr. Brian D. Greenwald, medical director of the Center for Brain Injuries at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. Greenwald recalled that after his injury Morgan feared he had lost the ability to make people laugh. “So, he would try out material on my staff and me, and we were in stitches. I remember laughing and telling Tracy, ‘You will be back on-stage making people laugh.’ Today, Tracy continues to succeed

in what he wants to do in life, and that is what we want for all of our patients,” Greenwald said. Robert C. Garrett, CEO, Hackensack Meridian Health, thanked Morgan. “On behalf of the entire Hackensack Meridian Health network, I am thankful to Tracy Morgan for sharing the story of his recovery. He has inspired patients around the globe,” Garrett said. “We are honored to have JFK University Medical Center and JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute as part of the Hackensack Meridian Health network. The JFK Johnson Center for Brain Injuries provides the highest level of rehabilitative care for people through-

out the region. Congratulations to Patricia Bosompem, who is very deserving of this year’s award. Patricia exemplifies the utmost in nursing care for patients with brain injuries.” Bosompem joins previous honorees of the Tracy Morgan Award for Excellence in Rehabilitation Nursing: Jackie Chirichella, BSN, RN; Juan G. Ramirez, RN, CRRN; and Gina Domingo, RN, CRRN. “These nurses all exemplify the highest standards of rehabilitation nursing skills, talents and dedication,” said Laura A. Mularz, DNP, MSN, director of Patient Care Services in Nursing Administration, JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. She said Bosompem is meticulous in her duties and is a kind and patient mentor to new nurses. “Patricia helps them navigate the challenging behaviors that our brain injury patients sometimes exhibit. Those behaviors can be overwhelming at times. Pat approaches these challenges peacefully, creating an environment of learning, not fear,” Mularz said. Feb. 27, 2019. Forming the committee allows council members to meet outside the parameters of a typical council meeting without violating Robert’s Rules, which determines how governing bodies operate.

(Continued from page 1)

Patel had named the six members of the community after a meeting with Comer in September 2020. He said he was an active member of the community since the 1990s and allows members of the community to use his restaurant for community-related activities. Patel said each of the six individuals came into his restaurant carrying boxes that included large postcards, according to reports. He reportedly asked Aloysius and Joseph Dsouza, who were working at the restaurant, to help them with the mailing. Aloysius Dsouza’s fingerprints were found on one mailing that was sent for testing at the forensic laboratory, according to reports. In the audio, Patil said he was not involved and learned about the fliers three days before the November election in 2017 after Poondi asked him to come by Mahesh Bhagia’s home. He alleged Bhagia and Shi had already put 1,500 labels on the fliers and Poondi, in the recording, told him they were moving forward with distributing the flier. In the recording, Patil told them he thought the whole idea was “nonsense” and questioned the legality of the flier. He alleged Poondi claimed there was no violation. Diehl had said Patil told them the architects of the racial flier were allegedly Poondi, Raj Bhagia and Mahesh Bhagia, who was not named in the report. In the recording, he said Shi was aware of the fliers. Mahesh Bhagia is the current Edison Democratic municipal chairman and had worked as an aide to Lankey. On Feb. 24, Bhagia secured the local Democratic Party’s endorsement for mayor. He defeated Edison Councilman Richard Brescher and former Councilwoman Sapana Shah for the endorsement. Diehl confirmed the information that was in the audio recording matched the information Patil relayed at a meeting with him, Comer and Councilman Alvaro Gomez in November. Lankey in a statement said he was “appalled” by the audio recording “that detailed the conspiracy by Edison elected officials and prominent members of our community to sow division and racial discord in our town. “Now, audio recordings reveal that members of our governing body and their allies knew full-well who was responsible,” he said. “The AG’s Office investigation into how a racist flier was circulated has been allegedly going on for more than three years but, to date, no one has been held accountable for this horrific hate crime. Enough is enough. I call on the Middlesex County prosecutor to take over this long-stagnant investigation, so that the

perpetrators can finally be held accountable and so that our community can move past this horrific incident and begin the difficult process of healing.” Diehl said he had a brief conversation with Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone a couple of weeks ago. He said she assured him at time the AG’s office was working on the case. Lankey and Diehl said they have no reason to not believe what Patil has said in the recording and at the meeting. “Until I have reason not to believe, I assume the councilman would be telling the truth,” Lankey said. Diehl said Patil approached the Committee of the Whole, which he believed to be in good faith to them what he believed was the story behind the flier and who was involved. “I have to take him at his word at this time,” he said. After the release of the audio recording, Councilman Sam Joshi called on Bhagia to resign from his position in the Democratic Party and drop out of the race for mayor. “The racist mailer that was distributed in 2017 shook our community to its core, and for nearly four years we have all hungered for justice to be done and for closure from this painful episode to arrive,” Joshi said. “After these new revelations, it is absolutely clear that Edison Democratic Chairman and Mayoral candidate Mahesh Bhagia played a key role in the planning and distributing of this vile piece of racist filth, as well as that he has been lying about his involvement this entire time. As a member of the Township Council committee investigating this matter, I have been aware of this recording for some time, but I have been unable to speak about it publicly due to the ongoing review. Now that it is out in the open, I feel that I must speak out on it to ensure that Edison residents are aware of this disgraceful act committed by Chairman Bhagia and his associates leading into the upcoming election.” Bhagia did not respond to a request for comment.
