Following a recent launch of his own coffee business and online shop, Eric LeGrand officially announced on March 10 that the brick-and-mortar location of LeGrand Coffee House will be part of a new development at 10 Green St. in his hometown of Woodbridge. Being developed by Prism Capital Partners, Avenue & Green is located next to the Woodbridge Train Station at the corner of Rahway Avenue and Green Street. The five-acre redevelopment will be a mixed-use facility that consists of 232 residential apartments and 12,000 square feet of retail space. LeGrand Coffee House is expected to open in late summer or early fall. In October 2010, LeGrand sustained a spinal cord injury at his C3 and C4 vertebrae while playing football for Rutgers University which has left him paralyzed. f all goes well, a new pump station, which will service both Metuchen and Edison, will be up and running in a year-and-a-half. The Metuchen Borough Council moved to amend a bond ordinance for the construction of the new pump station at a meeting on March 8 to reflect an increase of the final design and engineering cost estimate of the whole project by $1.16 million. The total bond ordinance is now $5.26 million from $4.1 million, which was approved in February 2020. “We are now at the stage of final design and we’re about to submit the plans to [the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)] and the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank for financing,” said Jay Muldoon, the borough’s director of special projects. “The increase is related to several things. Primarily when the feasibility study was done over two years ago, in any kind of project like this, you have some initial assumptions regarding size of the pump station, location where it’s going to be and so the initial estimate was based on the feasibility study. As you move through your process and things become real you find out what is actually needed and there might be additional chambers, surge releases, valves and additional things that weren’t anticipated in the beginning.” Muldoon further said in a meeting with the Middlesex County Utilities Authority

Forklift training program offered to Middlesex County high school seniors
M
echanically inclined high school seniors in Middlesex County are being offered an opportunity to get a head start on a lucrative career as forklift technicians. The free pilot program, spearheaded by the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools, will offer certification and potential entry into an apprentice program after six months or less of virtual and hands-on instruction. Partners in the effort are the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council and the Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association. “This is a very exciting program that’s new to us,” said Sean McDonald, MCVTS director of career and technical education. “The ideal candidate is someone who has
mechanical skills, is good at problem-solving, and has had some introduction to tools. This might be done in a student’s free time, in the evenings, on the weekends. “It is a very lucrative field, and the jobs are plentiful. They’re hungry for people,” he said. As many as 300 positions are available in New Jersey, which is a hub for the logistics and distribution industries, where forklifts are essential to handling and moving materials. Most technician salaries range from $37,000 to $65,000 with full benefits and overtime opportunities.

Middlesex County mourns loss of Freeholder Valenti, a trailblazer for Latinx in politics By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor
M
essages of support are pouring in for the family of Blanquita (Bird) Valenti, a longtime Middlesex County Freeholder and New Brunswick City Councilmember. “It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of a colleague and friend, former Freeholder Blanquita Valenti. Blanquita was an inspiration across the county, particularly for those in the minority community, as she not only shattered convention by becoming the first Latina to win a countywide election in Middlesex County, but she founded one of the county’s most active human services organizations, the Puerto Rican Action Board (PRAB). A mother and grandmother, Blanquita’s love for the youngest in our community was reflected in her career, spending almost four decades as an educator in both high school and university settings,” the Middlesex County Board of Commissioners, which was previously named the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, released in a statement on March 10. “Each of our lives are made greater to have known and served on the board with Blanquita and for those of us that benefitted from her mentorship. Her kindness was a signature, felt deeply by those who had the privilege to spend time with her, and she leaves behind a rich legacy of change driven by her service. Our thoughts are with Blanquita’s loved ones at this time. We hope they find peace in remembering the countless ways Blanquita touched and transformed the community she loved so much.” Valenti passed away on March 9 at age 87 at her home in New Brunswick. Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, to the late Esteban A. and Blanca (Sanchidrian) Bird, she graduated from Rosemont College in Pennsylvania, according to her obituary provided by Selover Funeral
Blanquita Valenti
Home in North Brunswick. She taught Spanish at John F. Kennedy High School in Woodbridge for 32 years before her retirement. She earned a master’s degree in teaching from Seton Hall University and in Spanish and Latin American literature from Rutgers University. She served on the board of directors for Saint Peter’s University Hospital and Middlesex County College and was a founding and charter member of the Puerto Rican Action Board and a founding member of ASPIRA, Inc. of New Jersey. Among her many accolades, she was named “Woman of the Year” by the New Brunswick Sister Cities Association. She helped achieve non-homelessness for veterans, was named “Who’s Who” for advancing the culture of the Latino American Business Community and was honored in a joint resolution of the NJ State Senate
and General Assembly paying tribute to her meritorious record of service, leadership and commitment, according to her obituary. Valenti served on the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders for 15 years, from 2004 to Dec. 31, 2019; and the New Brunswick City Council from 1990 to 2010, the first Latino City resident to do so, and was chosen by her fellow council members to serve as council president and council vice president, according to information provided by the City of New Brunswick. She was also the first Latina woman to serve on the New Brunswick Board of Education and additionally served on the New Brunswick Planning Board from 1996 to 2005, according to the statement. Valenti’s late husband, Carl, an attorney and former City Commissioner, served many years on the New Brunswick Free Public Library Board of Trustees. In 2008, the library dedicated the Carl T. Valenti Community Room in recognition of his service to New Brunswick, according to the statement. Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin (D-Middlesex) released a statement saying, “Blanquita Valenti was a dedicated public servant and historic trailblazer. After shattering glass ceilings for the Latinx community across Middlesex County, she devoted her time to bettering local schools, advocating for seniors, veterans and people with disabilities, and improving quality of life for families. “She will be remembered for her compassion, her determination and her unwavering commitment to her community. Middlesex County is better for her efforts, and we are forever grateful for her service.” Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez (D-19) released a statement saying, “Blanquita’s legacy as an elected official will endure as she embodied what all elected officials aspire to be. She was thoughtful, compassionate, and above all else community-
minded. Blanquita worked tirelessly every day on behalf of the residents of Middlesex County and her voice will certainly be missed. She will continue to inspire me, and I am forever grateful for her friendship and service.” U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) commented in a statement, saying, “It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of former Freeholder Blanquita Valenti. She was the first Latina to serve on the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, a champion for children and a gentle lady with an iron will. In her 15 years on the board, Blanquita helped create programs and services to support children, older adults and people living with disabilities, provide more affordable housing and tackle veterans’ homelessness in the county. Her four decades of public service included more than 30 years as an educator, positions on several community boards and organizations in New Brunswick and throughout Central Jersey, and as an advocate on issues affecting the Latino community. Blanquita has left her mark and will be sorely missed. I express my sincere condolences to her family and all those whose lives have been impacted by her work and leadership.” Visitation was held March 12 at Selover Funeral Home in North Brunswick. Funeral services were March 13 from Selover Funeral Home, followed by a Mass at St. Mary of Mt. Virgin Church in New Brunswick. Entombment followed in St. Peter’s Cemetery in New Brunswick. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Supportive Services for Veteran’s Families at www.communityhope-nj. org or to Women Aware, 250 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick 08901 or to the New Brunswick Public Library, 60 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick 08901. Flier (Continued from page 1)
Mayor Tom Lankey and Township Council members Sam Joshi, Bob Diehl and Alvaro Gomez – have yet to testify under oath. “The attacks against me are wholly untrue and are being spread by politicians who have at every turn opposed the reforms we seek. “Council members Bob Diehl, Sam Joshi, Ajay Patil, along with Mayor Lankey, are more interested in holding on to power, at any cost, instead of doing their
jobs on behalf of Edison residents,” Bhagia said. Bhagia claimed potential suspects in the case are running the investigation. “In no other situation would this be considered fair or acceptable,” he said. He said in 2017, he was not on the ballot and had no reason to participate in the creation of the fliers. Bhagia also said the allegations keep changing about who distributed the racist flier by mail on Oct. 31, 2017, which had the faces of the two candidates, Jerry Shi and Falguni Patel, who are of Asian descent. The flier stated “Make Edison Great Again” and underneath each photo was the

word “Deport.” At a Committee of the Whole meeting in November 2020, the committee read United States Postal Inspector David Comer’s report verbatim, which named six members of the community who were allegedly involved in assembling or mailing the flier: Satish Poondi, the legal adviser for the Indian Business Association who previously served on the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Community Relations in Edison; Raj Bhagia; Mohin Patel, who is now an Edison BOE member; Councilman Ajay Patil; BOE member Jerry Shi; and Shariq Ahmad, the former chairman of the Edison Democratic Organization. Since the meeting, Shi, Patil and Ahmad have denied their involvement with the racist fliers. “First, the committee stated the fliers were made at Chowpatty Restaurant. Then, when I declared my campaign for mayor, overnight, Joshi changed the story and alleged it was made in my basement. “In a desperate effort to keep power, Lankey, Diehl and Joshi are now attacking New Jersey Attorney General (Gurbir) Grewal, a man of impeccable character,” Mahesh Bhagia said. In his statement, Mahesh Bhagia said he agrees with Councilman Joe Coyle that Joshi should be removed from the Committee of the Whole for allegedly compromising the investigation and wasting years’ worth of taxpayer dollars. “This investigation should be run by real law enforcement, not political hacks who have run Edison into the ground. Our taxes are too high, our water system is broken, our schools are overcrowded, and
Edison politics is conducted in back rooms with special interest groups. “We are going to change that, despite the best efforts of Lankey, Diehl, Joshi and Gomez to preserve the status quo. They have no record to stand on and so they resort to slinging mud. But Edison voters will not be duped by them again,” Mahesh Bhagia said. Lankey and Diehl appealed to the New Jersey Attorney General’s office and/or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office earlier this month to step in and bring those responsible for the racist flier that was distributed by mail during the 2017 Edison Township Public Schools Board of Education election to justice. Lankey called for a press conference on March 3 after an audio recording obtained by the media was released of a conversation among Patil; Chandrakant Patel, the founder of the Chowpatty Restaurant in Iselin; and Indian Business Association President Dhiren Amin. In the audio, Patil, the Edison councilman, said he was not involved and learned about the fliers three days before the November 2017 election after Poondi asked him to come by Bhagia’s home. Patil alleged Bhagia and Shi had already put 1,500 labels on the fliers and that Poondi, in the recording, told him they were moving forward with distributing the flier. Diehl said Patil told them the architects of the racial flier were allegedly Poondi, Raj Bhagia and Mahesh Bhagia, who was not named in the initial report. In the recording, Diehl said Shi was aware of the fliers.

The new station will replace the Edison Pump Station and the Metuchen Jersey Avenue Pump Station and will be built between the two existing stations. The design and installation of the associated measuring devices and/or meters required to measure the combined flow from Edison and Metuchen pumped to the MCUA for treatment and disposal would eliminate the need for each municipality to upgrade and/or replace its own pumping station and eliminate the current practice

of double pumping of wastewater. The two municipalities officially entered a shared services agreement in July 2019 for the design and construction of a new single sewage pumping station, which will be owned, operated, maintained and managed by Metuchen. “This is not exactly the sexy work we do in local government,” Mayor Jonathan Busch said. “Building a pump station is essential especially for some people on that side of town who had some issues as a result of a failing pump station that we own and a completely broken pump station that Edison has. If we were doing this on our own, we would be bonding this and paying the whole thing by ourselves. Because we’re sharing this with Edison, Edison is paying for half of [the project]. This is a great, great example of local governments working together and we appreciate Edi-

son in being a partner on this.” As part of the process, an invoice will be sent to Edison for bond payments. Once DEP approvals are met, Muldoon said they will garner authorization to go out to bid. “We’re expecting [DEP] approval hopefully in two months and based on that we want to have bids due some time in June and award within a month after that,” he said, noting all authorizations require council action. “We could start construction in the fall and it’s going to be about a 12 to 15 month construction process.” Since the 1950s, the Metuchen sewage pump station on Jersey Avenue and the Edison pump station located in Metuchen less than 500 feet away processed sewage for both municipalities. The flow to the pumping stations was all intermingled, but a shared services
agreement was never made, officials said. Both pump stations are nearing their useful lives and are in need of replacements. The Metuchen Jersey Avenue Pump Station was constructed in the late 1950s and the Edison Pump Station was built in 1955. The borough has two pump stations located on Orchard Street and Jersey Avenue. Officials have said the Jersey Avenue station averages about 2 million gallons of sewage per day which moves down Durham Avenue and joins sewage water from Edison behind the Pines Manor and eventually makes its way to the Sayreville Water Treatment Plant. Officials have said they do not expect any disruption of service when the construction of the new station begins.

Why is this NCIS: New Orleans’ last season? Question: How come CBS is canceling NCIS: New Orleans? I really like that show. If they wanted to cancel one of those NCIS shows it should have been NCIS: Los Angeles. That show has gone downhill since Hetty is only on it occasionally. The best part is LL Cool J. —Sandra Matt Roush: As you can imagine, the shockwaves from CBS turning the lights off of any of its NCIS shows are intense. (Same thing happened when CBS began winnowing its schedule of CSI shows back when that was the dominant crime-drama franchise.) There’s no way to address a cancellation that will satisfy a show’s fans, and adding to the confusion this time is the fact that New Orleans is the youngest (seven seasons) within the franchise — the mothership is in its 18th year and Los Angeles its 12th. While it may seem premature to NOLA‘s fans, this
is pretty much in keeping with CBS’s history of refreshing its schedule and retiring many of its procedurals, even those with solid ratings, after roughly seven seasons (i.e., Cold Case, Elementary, Without a Trace), a point at which a show can become much more expensive to produce. NOLA was never quite as self-sustaining ratings-wise as its predecessors, and I’ve read that it hasn’t been as lucrative in the syndication market, which along with the high costs of location filming could be other contributing factors. unleash the evil Druun and splinter the pieces of the stone at the center of Heart. The situation rips Raya’s heart out and sends her on a quest for years. Her journey takes her far from her homeland in Heart and deep into the other four regions. Starting in Tail, some six years after the fracture, Raya searches desperately to put her past behind and focus on reuniting the long-lost pieces of the stone. But her trust in others remains
shattered and doesn’t show any signs of repair. The journey through multiple lands will lead her to a variety of characters who embody a spirit that seems hard to recreate. Everyone, and everything, wants to help Raya, but will she allow them? The journey is long, hard and requires trust, but it is the restoration of faith that may just save Kumandra. Raya and the Last Dragon is a film that the world needs right now. A film that deals with many imperfect people and attitudes that mimics our current world. Although we are different as individuals,

we have let that fractured nature of society get in the way of true trust and devotion. As an animated film, this beautiful spectacle explodes from the screen and into our hearts, and because it is animated, it has the ability to reach multiple generations of individuals. It’s hard to change old ways, whether it is Raya redeveloping trust or us as a people trusting our fellow man. We can all learn from this tale, and we can all enjoy the ride, and that is what makes this a great film. Stunning visuals, electrifying voice work and relatable characters are all front and center. Trust takes all of us — one woman, one man at a time. We all have a lot to offer; if we can only work together, it’s amazing to think of the powerful force we could be. Together, we are strong. It is time for us to trust each other and work as one. Dumbstruck In Love A Decade Of TV Romance By Matt Roush, ReMIND Magazine
W
hy do fools fall in love? It’s more fun that way, especially when it comes to all of those characters who were struck dumb by matters of the heart in a wave of popular 1990s TV comedies. Top of the will-they-or-won’t-they list, dominating the decade’s pop-culture water cooler chatter, were those friends with benefits from NBC’s top-rated sitcom Friends. New generations continue to fall for this funky and funny sextet of young New Yorkers. It seemed everyone had a rooting interest in the relationship of Ross and Rachel, played with varying degrees of charm and exasperation by David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston. Their on-and-off courtship was delightful to behold, also maddening whenever one or the other insisted on a “break,” but we never doubted they were meant for each other. More of a surprise, their BFFs Monica (Courteney Cox), Ross’ sister, and sardonic Chandler (Matthew Perry), each famously unlucky in love, found each other after four seasons of living across the hall. (It happened in London, when they were attending Ross’ misguided wedding to Emily.) Fans cheered, but a shocked Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) screamed, “My eyes! My eyes!” when she first spotted them in a clinch. She got over it. Sometimes it was love at first sight, like with Dharma & Greg, the daffy romantic comedy that made a star of Jenna Elfman as Dharma, the raised-by-hippies free spirit
who impulsively marries buttoned-down San Francisco lawyer Greg (Thomas Gibson). Worlds collide as opposites attract, and yet a good time was had by all. One of the more unusual ’90s pairings, because by its nature it stayed platonic, was that of Will & Grace, the enduring hit (revived in 2017, 11 years after it went off the air) that was groundbreaking for its time in depicting a gay lead character, Will (Eric McCormack). His roommate and soulmate, Grace (Debra Messing), was a neurotic interior decorator who leaned on Will for emotional support. Each had turbulent dating lives — Grace was even married for a time (to Harry Connick Jr.) — but they always ended up back together, bonding over trashy TV and takeout food like any other unconventional New York couple. Such as Jamie and Paul Buchman of Mad About You, which like Will & Grace enjoyed a recent revival in 2019. Played by four-time Emmy winner Helen Hunt and series co-creator Paul Reiser, their glory

years of the 1990s were spent in a frenetic urban domestic bliss, adding a daughter, Mabel, in the sixth season. This show was mad about classic comedy, inviting legends like Sid Caesar, Mel Brooks, Jerry Lewis and Ed Asner as guests. Carl Reiner even reprised his role from The Dick Van Dyke Show as Alan Brady, prompting Jamie to declare “Oh, Paul!” in homage.
Is it news to you that Paul once leased his old bachelor pad to a certain Cosmo Kramer of Seinfeld fame? There’s also a Seinfeld connection to another wackily married ’90s couple, Doug and Carrie Heffernan (Kevin James and Leah Remini) of the decidedly middle-class The King of Queens. Her dad, Arthur, who lived in their basement, bore a striking resemblance to George Costanza’s similarly cranky father Frank. He often got on deliveryman Doug’s case, and nerves, but King‘s real fascination for viewers was what long-suffering Carrie ever saw in her man-child of a husband. It takes all kinds. And with all due respect to Rachel and Monica, if there was a “That Girl” of 1990s TV rom-comedy, it was Ally McBeal, the pratfalling and hallucinating heroine (Calista Flockhart) who grooved to her own lovelorn but kooky tune — occasionally with a mocking Dancing Baby. Sometimes, love means never having to say you’re normal. Matt Roush is “TV Guide Magazine’s” senior critic and is a nationally respected television journalist.
