Racist flier in 2017 Edison BOE election may be heard before state grand jury By KATHY CHANG

The Independent Club of Colonia released its virtual celebration of Black History Month last week entitled “The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity,” which is now viewable on TV-35 or via the township web page at twp.woodbridge.nj.us. he details of the racist flier that was distributed by mail during the 2017 Edison Township Public Schools Board of Education election may be heard before a state grand jury, according to Township Council Vice President Sam Joshi. Joshi, along with Council Vice President Bob Diehl, relayed that the New Jersey Attorney General’s (AG) Office has requested the information the Committee of the Whole has garnered since it formed in 2019 by April 5. “This is encouraging,” Diehl said at a council meeting on March 22. “After all this time we have been asking for help for years … we are hoping we can bring this to a close and be able to turn this over to law enforcement so they can close this up.” Early on in the investigation, Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan had said the investigation was in the hands of the AG’s office and a public information officer for the AG had said the office’s policy “is that we neither confirm nor deny investigations.” (Continued on page 14)

Biral Patel, who reached out to several hundreds of seniors to help them get registered at the New Jersey Convention and Expo Center in Edison – one of the state’s six mega vaccine sites – and the vaccination site at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He then took his efforts to the Township Council meetings and addressed it with the town-
ship administration. Not getting much traction, Patel continued seeking appointments for as many people that he could by himself. When pharmacies started offering vaccination appointments, Patel stayed up (Continued on page 8)

Middlesex College unveils rebranding effort By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
I
n efforts to spread the word of what all Middlesex College has to offer and help dispel the stigma of attending a community college, the college, in partnership with Middlesex County, officially unveiled its rebranding effort on March 23. Middlesex College, formerly Middlesex County College, announced its name change and move to rebrand earlier this year. The college’s Board of Trustees approved the name change in October 2020, which took effect Jan. 1. College President Mark McCormick, who said the process began in February 2020 right before the novel coronavirus pandemic, appeared with Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios; Deputy Director Commissioner Kenneth Armwood; Dorothy K. Power, chairwoman of the Middlesex College Board of Trustees; and Kyle Anderson, a Middlesex College trustee and Middlesex County interim executive superintendent, in a Zoom press conference expounding on the college’s plans to further implement branding changes across campus and throughout the college’s identity on March 23. “Middlesex College offers high quality education that serves county residents and customize training and workforce development to area businesses,” McCormick said. “Our students transfer to every college/university in New Jersey including
Rutgers, Kean, New Jersey Institute of Technology, College of New Jersey and Princeton. Our transfer partners report that Middlesex College graduates perform better than students who started the four-year institution in terms of grade point average and time for completion of a bachelor’s degree.” However, McCormick said despite “amazing outcomes of our students, there are many in our community that remain unaware of what Middlesex College has to offer.” “Even though our name has changed, our mission has not,” McCormick said. “Our mission remains to offer quality, affordable education for residents of Middlesex College and help our students thrive in education, growth and personal success. For many students Middlesex College is the best choice in terms of affordability, transferability of credits, flexible scheduling, proximity, personalized attention and quality.” Rios said in many ways Middlesex College’s new brand is an extension of the county’s own brand journey that began several years ago. “We both seek to attract new talent and opportunities to Middlesex County; in fact the county’s strategic plan and master economic roadmap known as Destination 2040 makes it clear that the success of Middlesex County and Middlesex College are intertwined in Destination 2040,” he said. Rios said the county’s financial investments with a collaboration project with
Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health, New Brunswick Development Corporation and New Brunswick of a freestanding comprehensive cancer pavilion will provide Middlesex College extraordinary opportunities including a pathway for oncology education. County officials announced the project in May 2020. “This will provide Middlesex College students exclusive access to educational curricula and content from a premier oncology center,” Rios said. “As we’ve seen here today the new Middlesex College rebrand identity perfectly reflects the college’s onward unwavering dedication to its mission and every element from a new name to the new logo and even the new mascot reinforces the message that Middlesex College is a worthy first choice for perspective students just as Middlesex College is a top destination for residents and businesses. Middlesex College is one of the many reasons Middlesex County is an excellent place to live work and play.” Armwood said they recognize Middlesex College as a key pipeline for the talent that will fuel local businesses and help the county achieve its strategic long-term economic development goals. “We know that many of today’s Middlesex College students will become the entrepreneurs, CEOs, essential workers and life-science experts of the businesses that will call Middlesex County home in the future,” he said. Power said the county’s flag motto – leading together – and the campus col-
lege’s motto – explore, grow, drive – are compatible. “Middlesex College has been an engine of growth,” she said. “We have almost 60,000 alumni and countless more have been taking non-credit classes for who have been trained in our workforce development program.” Anderson said going to college is not just about hard work in the classroom. “Middlesex College offers numerous extracurricular activities as well as [giving students] a chance to have fun, learn leadership skills, and participate in clubs and athletics,” he said. “As a former athlete, football coach and Middlesex College student, I can tell you that the new brand is extremely important in creating school spirit and a sense of pride and camaraderie that propels student life and the athletic brand forward.” Anderson said the college’s new athletics logo embodies the strength and pride of the Middlesex College Colts. “In addition to our logo, within a year we will be unveiling our new physical mascot,” he said. “Our colt will be named by online polls of Middlesex College students. [The mascot] will attend athletic events as well as select campus and community activities [and] will be be an integral part of our new rebrand.” The Middlesex College will be hosting a virtual open house from 10 a.m to 1:30 p.m. on April 18. For more information, visit middlesexcc.edu
“Even though our name has changed, our mission has not. Our mission remains to offer quality, affordable education for residents of Middlesex College and help our students thrive in education, growth and personal success. ...” — College President Mark McCormick

Soon after getting input from fellow members of the community, he decided to put a notification on social media, which garnered several dedicated volunteers – some professionals, some high school students and some who were already engaged in community services. Patel’s solo efforts became a group effort. The volunteers worked very hard round the clock to secure appointments
for several hundreds of township seniors, some teachers, educational support staff and those with certain conditions eligible per state guidelines. The volunteer group became Edison Community Vaccine Help. They put a Google form together and mobilized to work through all resources available and sites available to sign up for vaccine appointments. Volunteer Subodh Sharma, who is an IT professional, said scheduling the vaccine is “very tech heavy.” “While helping people getting their vaccine, I was able to connect with few wonderful seniors who were very warm

and thankful,” he said. “That made all those long frustrating nights looking for appointments really worth.” Volunteer Neeraj Nagpal, a senior director of finance at a large non-profit organization, said “even with an increased supply of vaccinations, it was not easy to get appointments.” “It is critical for our first responders, health care providers, educators, education support staff members, people with underlying conditions and other key groups to get vaccinated,” he said. “It is such a rewarding experience to do my part along with other committed volunteers and help out in this way. We hope things get easier soon, but in the meantime, we will continue to provide as much help as we can.” Volunteer Subamaniam Dharmarajan, a professional at BNY Melon, was instrumental in creating the intake Google form. “Together we are able to help hundreds of Edison residents get their vaccine shots,” he said. “By helping others, I felt needed in the society. Not only did it boost my self-esteem, but others benefited too.” Volunteer Sravan Natakala, a professional at JP Morgan Chase, said “giving back to the community is always a great pleasure and felt like my family and my duty.” Since its inception, the Edison Community Vaccine Help volunteer group has

received many heartfelt appreciation notes from people they have helped. “Not enough words to express gratitude for helping me secure my vaccine appointment so promptly and thereafter for so many others as well,” said resident Priti Goel. “Seeing a group of people working tirelessly at late night and early [morning] hours, sacrificing personal comfort while managing your own regular day jobs and life to help strangers is a super heartwarming gesture that restores faith in humanity and needs to be applauded out aloud especially in times like now.” Just this past week, the tireless efforts of Patel, along with BOE member Virginia White, chairperson of the BOE-Township Council Liaison Committee – who also include Board Vice President Mohin Patel and BOE member Shivi Prasad-Madhukar – paid off in following up and exploring all avenues to ensure educators and support staff members receive their vaccination on an immediate basis. The committee worked with Schools Superintendent Bernard Bragen, township administrators and Edison Office of Emergency Management Director Andy Toth. have a source within the Russian government sharing Khrushchev’s intentions. Enlisting Wynne to make a trip to the Soviet Union on a trade mission will be expected and welcomed by the Russian government, but what his contact will send back is vital to stopping Russian aggression. It is on his initial trade mission that Wynne meets the source, Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze). Penkovsky is a Russian colonel who simply wants to stop the destruction of the Western world and has decided to work with the West’s intelligence agencies. The contact between Penkovsky and Wynne was supposed to be a simple in and out, but with increasingly sensitive information becoming available, they bond and become friends, which just may be what is needed to save millions of individuals. Cumberbatch is riveting in his performance as Wynne. A man who is initially brought in for his ability to blend into the background, he becomes the centerpiece of the explosive and critical relationship formed between the two men. He understands his character’s development from
understated and reserved to ambitious and forthcoming. Ninidze (Homeland) is a veteran actor who knows how to deliver a performance as Penkovsky. With a single glance he is able to display urgency, regret or concern at a moment’s notice. It is the performances of Cumberbatch and Ninidze that make this film special. The story of The Courier is, as with many spy tales, not well known to a new generation of individuals. I found myself craving the next development, living Wynne’s highs and lows right alongside him and hoping things would be resolved in a positive light. All of these elements make for a successful and intriguing film that will enlighten and entertain. Sure, a simple courier may deliver a package to you at any time. But The Courier will deliver so much more. Paul’s Grade: B The Courier Rated PG-13 Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Merab Ninidze, Rachel Brosnahan Director: Dominic Cooke

DEP grants enhance recycling programs in Middlesex County
T
o further support local government efforts to ensure that all New Jersey residents enjoy cleaner communities, the Murphy Administration is awarding $16 million in grants to municipalities across the state to enhance waste reduction and recycling efforts. “Thirty years after becoming the first state in the nation to enact a recycling law, New Jersey remains steadfast in its commitment to reducing, reusing and recycling solid waste,” Acting Commissioner LaTourette said in a statement provided by Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Shawn LaTourette on March 16. “By supporting our local government partners through these grants, we can deliver waste reduction and recycling programs that enhance the quality of life for all New Jersey communities.” The awards, which are based on local governments’ 2018 recycling performance,
represent a $1.8 million increase from the prior year. The grants are awarded through the state’s Recycling Enhancement Act and are funded through a $3 per-ton surcharge on trash disposed at solid waste facilities statewide. The DEP then allocates that money back to municipalities based on how much recycling each community reports accomplishing during a particular calendar year, according to the statement. Grants must be used to continue and improve municipal recycling programs. This can include doing educational visits to generators of recyclable materials to ensure proper source separation, sponsoring household hazardous waste collection events, providing recycling receptacles in public places, maintaining leaf composting operations and more, according to the statement. For calendar year 2018, the most recent year for which data is available, New
Jersey municipalities and counties generated 23 total tons of solid waste, with 13.3 million tons recycled and 9.7 million tons disposed, according to the statement. This represents a total solid waste recycling rate of 58%. Solid waste includes municipal waste plus construction debris and other types of non-municipal waste. In Middlesex County, the following grants were awarded: Edison, $265,870; South Brunswick, $243,868; Woodbridge, $239,802; Piscataway, $125,029; Monroe, $116,211; East Brunswick, $108,966; and Old Bridge, $102,639. New Jersey generated 9.8 million tons of municipal solid waste, of which 3.8 million tons were recycled and 6 million tons were disposed, according to the statement. This represents a municipal solid waste recycling rate of 39%. New Jersey’s municipal solid waste recycling rate exceeds the national recycling

The seizures prevented tens of thousands of doses of dangerous drugs from reaching the hands of individuals suffering from addiction, according to the statement. As authorities attempted to take Barker into custody, Barker rammed his vehicle into an Edison police vehicle, causing bodily injury to an officer, according to officials. The officer was treated for minor

Flier (Continued from page 1)
In January, Diehl said Mayor Thomas Lankey received a letter from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office informing the township the state AG’s Office had picked up the case and has assigned a detective to the case. Since May 2019, the Township Council, through a Committee of the Whole, has been conducting its own investigation through fact-finding public meetings, questioning candidates from the 2017 Board of Education (BOE), Township Council and mayoral elections, people who helped with the campaigns, and people involved in the investigation. All of the people have been subpoenaed to appear before the committee. One main question remains – who distributed the racist flier by mail on Oct. 31, 2017, which had the faces of the two candidates, Jerry Shi and Falguni Patel, who are of Asian descent. The flier stated “Make Edison Great Again” and underneath each photo was the word “Deport.” Joshi said the Committee of the Whole spent approximately $25,000 during its investigation, which included subpoenaing people for interviews and finger print analysis of the fliers. “We have zero ability to prosecute anyone,” he said. “It is very encouraging law enforcement is taking on the investigation.”
At a Committee of the Whole meeting in November 2020, the committee read United States Postal Inspector David Comer’s report verbatim, which named six members of the community who were allegedly involved in assembling or mailing the flier: Satish Poondi, the legal adviser for the Indian Business Association who previously served on the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Community Relations in Edison; Raj Bhagia; Mohin Patel, who is now an Edison BOE member; Councilman Ajay Patil; BOE member Jerry Shi; and Shariq Ahmad, the former chairman of the Edison Democratic Organization (EDO). Since the meeting, Shi, Patil and Ahmad have denied their involvement with the racist fliers. Lankey called for a press conference on March 4 after an audio recording obtained by the media was released of a conversation among Patil; Chandrakant Patel, founder of Chowpatty Restaurant in Iselin; and Indian Business Association president Dhiren Amin. Patel had named the six members of the community after a meeting with Comer in September 2020. He said he was an active member of the community since the 1990s and allows members of the community to use his restaurant for community-related activities. Patel said each of the six individuals came into his restaurant carrying boxes that included large postcards, according to reports. He reportedly asked Aloysius and

able” and said he was personally offended when he saw it. “For nearly three-and-a-half years, I have watched with disgust as the Edison Township Council fumbled around and took part in a politicized witch hunt instead of searching for facts and the truth,” he said. “For the record, I have testified, under oath, before the Committee of the Whole, and answered all the questions posed to me.” Bhagia, who is the current chair of the EDO, further said in 2017, he was not on the ballot and had no reason to participate in the creation of the fliers. Township Council members unanimously approved the formation of the Committee of the Whole at a meeting on Feb. 27, 2019. Forming the committee allows council members to meet outside the parameters of a typical council meeting without violating Robert’s Rules, which determines how governing bodies operate. Diehl has spearheaded the committee with Gomez and Joshi. For now, Diehl said the Committee of the Whole will remain in place in case they need to assist the AG’s office in their investigation.
Woodbridge man charged with murder of household member A Woodbridge man has been charged with the murder of a household member and the attempted murder of another. Rahul Anumala, 45, of the Iselin section of Woodbridge, was charged on March 17 with one count of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree attempted murder, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Director Robert Hubner of the Woodbridge Police Department. An investigation by Detective Kevin Goins of the Woodbridge Police Department and Detective Paul Kelley of the
Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office revealed Anumala allegedly assaulted and killed one household member and then attempted to kill another, according to the statement. Aloysius Dsouza’s fingerprints were found on one mailing that was sent for testing at the forensic laboratory, according to reports. In the audio, Patil said he was not involved and learned about the fliers three days before the November election in 2017 after Poondi asked him to come by Mahesh Bhagia’s home. He alleged Bhagia and Shi had already put 1,500 labels on the fliers and Poondi, in the recording, told him they were moving forward with distributing the flier. In the recording, Patil told them he thought the whole idea was “nonsense” and questioned the legality of the flier. He alleged Poondi claimed there was no violation. Diehl had said Patil told them the architects of the racial flier were allegedly Poondi, Raj Bhagia and Mahesh Bhagia, who was not named in the report. Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition.
