Climate change is one topic addressed by Windows of Understanding Public Art Project By GLORIA STRAVELLI Correspondent

ith Earth Day recently commemorated, environmental issues like climate change take on greater urgency. A Community Conversation was hosted jointly by the Metuchen Arts Council and the Metuchen Human Relations Commission on April 21, the eve of Earth Day, around the issue of climate change, one of the topics addressed by the 2021 Windows of Understanding Public Art Project. According to the Metuchen Arts Council, the Windows of Understanding project is a joint project of the New Brunswick Community Arts Council, Mason Gross School of the Arts, the Highland Park Arts Council, and this year for the first time the Metuchen Arts Council and the Metuchen Human Relations Commission. “The initiative unites local artists, organizations and businesses to promote compassion and awareness around social justice issues impacting local communities,” according to the arts council’s description of the program. “The belief of the project’s creators is that through visual language, artists can communicate methods of understanding in powerful ways that cut across cultural boundaries.” Topics in the current series focus on food insecurity, public health, trauma and recovery and youth engagement. For the topic of climate change, artists Lauren Curtis, Maja Opacic and Mickey Waring were commissioned by the arts council to create art that illuminates the mission of the Edison Greenways Group. Walter Stochel, vice president of the Greenways Group, will participate in the discussion about the
group’s mission and work to enhance the quality of life in the community. The Community Conversation on April 21 included visual references to the Greenway through the commissioned artwork, along with poetry and communal storytelling about the spiritual, psychological and ecological benefits of the greenway, according to the statement. In addition to the Community Conversations, Metuchen programming for the Windows of Understanding Project will include an exhibit in the Metuchen Public Library Gallery of Art, Metuchen Arts Council Co-Chair Robert Diken explained. However, due to restrictions related to COVID-19, the gallery is closed and the complete exhibit can be accessed virtually from the arts council website at www. metuchenartscouncil.com. Diken noted an important focus for the project is to raise awareness around social justice issues impacting local communities. “In the face of the dual pandemic of COVID-19 and racial injustice, the scope of the Windows of Understanding art project has widened its lens to incorporate the impact of these challenging circumstances,” according to the Metuchen Arts Council. The project launched on Jan. 18, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Diken noted, as a way of paying homage to Dr. King’s legacy with a designated “Day of Understanding.” More than 20 nonprofit and social service organizations whose missions reflect the themes were paired with artists to create the original works of art. For the Metuchen phase of the project, artists worked with The First Presbyterian Food Pantry (food insecurity), the Metuchen First Aid Squad (public (Continued on page 4)

uring the past 13 months, public health efforts have been focused on COVID-19. But there is another troubling epidemic going on that has been somewhat exacerbated by the pandemic:
the drug overdose epidemic. In 2019, 70,000 people died from drug overdoses, and experts say the situation has gotten worse. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. overdose deaths have surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 87,000 people in the United States
have died from drug overdoses, primarily related to opioids, through September 2020, according to recent data. And officials predict that there were likely thousands more due to overdose that were not reported. That is the highest number of overdose deaths since the opioid epidemic first
started in the 1990s, and a setback from the slight drop that the U.S. experienced for the first time in decades in 2018, according to the report. Edison Township continues to support an infrastructure for fighting drug addiction

health), Women Aware (trauma and recovery), the Edison Greenways Group (climate change) and Kiddie Keep Well Camp (youth engagement). Some of the artworks are on display in storefronts and public spaces throughout New Brunswick, Highland Park and Metuchen More information on Windows of Understanding, including a complete list of featured organizations, participating storefronts and a full calendar of free events, is available at www.windowsofunderstanding.org. Or, visit Instagram at @windowsofunderstanding, #weseethroughhate. While this is the fourth year of the Windows of Understanding project, it is the first year the Metuchen Arts Council is participating. According to Diken, organizers were seeking artists to participate in the event. “This is a different kind of event because it is more relevant to social justice issues and themes that tie to certain organizations that they want the artist to illuminate … that are more in line with the mission of the organization. It’s very unique and I thought personally as an artist it would be a challenge, so I said I would do it,” he said. He was so impressed with the context of the show that he asked if they would consider expanding the community project to include Metuchen. “Through that conversation I met the Windows of Understanding organizing committee and they were very happy to engage with us,” he said. “So this is the first year Metuchen is doing it. We’re doing it under the banner of the Metuchen Arts Council. We put together a committee and our committee started engaging in Windows of Understanding.” There are 15 artists with works in the show, including some from Metuchen, working in various mediums including collage, photography, quilting, a little bit of everything, he noted. Many of the works are displayed in businesses that support the themes, he explained, because the library gallery is not available.

The Windows of Understanding project focuses on awareness around social justice issues impacting local communities.
Diken stressed the works submitted were all subject to vetting not only by the arts council, but by the related community group. “The most important thing about this is it’s not like we tell the artist here’s the show, create something and we’re going to put it up,” he said. “It’s completely vetted not only by our own Windows of Understanding committee to ensure that it fits the concept, but also vetted by the Windows of Understanding [community] organization being represented so that they are not surprised at the end that there’s some art they didn’t look at, see, that they don’t feel good about. So, it’s quite a process to go through. It’s definitely a challenge for the artists to meet all these objectives and still be creative in their own way.” For this year there are five social justice themes for Windows of Understanding originating from the racial justice issues that have arisen in the nation, he said. “Folks in New Brunswick gathered and said we really need to gather around this as
a community,” he said. “Each year they develop some social justice themes that they think are relevant to the moment and we match those themes with organizations that are good matches. “Part of this project is that it’s not only visual arts programming, but it’s educational programming as well. So if you go on the Windows of Understanding website you’ll see all the programs related to this. The Metuchen Arts Council and Metuchen Borough Human Relations Commission hooked up and collaborated and we are bringing some of these stories alive through community conversations. “In that discussion we will invite the public to listen in and we will have the Edison Greenways Group there to talk about what they do. And we have the artists that are related to those … who are going to be in on the call and they’ll be talking about their art, what it means, and it’s a chance for the community to understand this subject matter more deeply and be positively affected by it,” Diken said.
“In the face of the dual pandemic of COVID-19 and racial injustice, the scope of the Windows of Understanding art project has widened its lens to incorporate the impact of these challenging circumstances.” — the Metuchen Arts Council Classified...................................................... 15 Crossword.................................................... 11

Piscataway councilwoman appointed to Armwood’s seat; McCullum previously took over for late county commissioner on town council
C
hanelle Scott McCullum was sworn into a seat on the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners on April 21. She fills the seat left vacant after the sudden passing of Deputy Director Kenneth Armwood on March 29. A resident of Piscataway for more than 40 years, McCullum has served on the Piscataway Township Council since April 2013, when she was appointed to fill thenCouncilman Armwood’s seat when he left to join the Board of County Commissioners, according to information provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. McCullum was elected to the Piscataway Township Council in November 2013 and re-elected to four-year terms in 2016 and 2020. During her time on the Piscataway Township Council, McCullum served two terms as council president and championed issues pertaining to wellness and healthy living, including founding a free annual Walk for Your Health event in Piscataway’s Johnson Park, according to the statement.
“On behalf of the entire Board of County Commissioners, I am pleased to welcome County Commissioner McCullum to the board,” Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement. “The loss of Deputy Director Armwood, a dedicated public servant and wonderful human, is a tragedy for all of us – both personally and professionally. Deputy Director Armwood left big shoes to fill, but I am certain that County Commissioner McCullum is up to the task. She joins the Board of County Commissioners with her own impressive record of public service, and I look forward to working together on behalf of the people of Middlesex County.” “I am proud to join the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners,” McCullum said in the statement. “I am especially honored to have the opportunity to carry on the work of Ken Armwood, a dear friend and colleague. He left a legacy of kindness that was elevated by his hard work and commitment to the people of our great county. I will continue that legacy (Continued on next page)

even as I work to establish my own path as a county commissioner dedicated to improving the lives of every Middlesex County resident.” In addition to serving on the Piscataway Township Council for the past eight years, McCullum is a member of the Piscataway Municipal Alliance, a role in which she works closely with members of the community to educate citizens regarding the dangers of drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse and misuse, according to the statement. She also serves on the Board of Trustees for Sterling Village, Piscataway Township’s independent apartment complex for senior citizens. A licensed registered pharmacist since 1991, McCullum began her pharmacy career as a staff pharmacist at Pathmark Pharmacy in the City of Newark. She has worked for Merck for more than 25 years, according to the statement. McCullum was educated in Piscataway’s public and private schools before earning her bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, magna cum laude, from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and her doctorate in pharmacy from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, according to the statement. She is the daughter of Retired Lt. Richard Scott of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Middlesex County Sheriff Mildred S. Scott, the first female sheriff in Middlesex County and the first African American sheriff in the State of New Jersey. McCullum is only the second African American female to serve on the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners, according to the statement. The first was her mother, who left the board to serve as Middlesex County Sheriff and was replaced as county commissioner by Armwood. The remaining year of Armwood’s term will be on the ballot for the Nov. 2 General Election.

Missed Opportunities By Paul Hall
S
tarting over is a real thing for so many individuals. Whether coming out of a bad relationship, leaving a job that saps your lifeblood, or just digging out from mountains of debt, when people are given the opportunity to make a new start, many jump at it. In the new film Vanquish, we see one such woman who gets a second chance. Victoria (Ruby Rose) has a messy past. She is a single mother and her daughter needs some expensive medical care. Her boss is Damon (Morgan Freeman), a former police commissioner who is currently in a wheelchair and needs constant care. Victoria serves as Damon’s caretaker and he treats her and her daughter as family. There is history between these two. It seems Damon may have been the only person between Victoria and prison (or
worse). He gave her a second chance at life, and now Damon has another proposition, one that uses the talents that got Victoria in trouble with Russian drug couriers. Her initial hesitation turns to agreement when Damon uses a bargaining chip that Victoria can’t resist: He takes her daughter. Now, Victoria must make five pickups for the former police commissioner and he will pay for her daughter’s treatments. The pickups consist of bags of cash from some of the most unsavory locales in the city. Victoria has skills: She can outmaneuver anyone on her motorcycle and hold her own against the toughest men and women the bad guys can throw at her. Because of her past, many of these pickups involve individuals who just might have a history with Victoria and a grudge to settle. Can she make all five pickups and vanquish her past before starting life over again?
I really like Rose and I love Freeman, but this is a film that underuses both of them. Freeman delivers momentary glimpses of vintage performances, but those glimpses are fleeting and spaced out in a way that minimizes the man’s talents. But it isn’t only Freeman who feels wasted here, as Rose becomes a robot in
her chase to finish the job laid out for her. Scenes felt independent of each other and not part of a cohesive narrative. A story that held so much promise was sloppily executed. I really wanted to like this effort, but the brooding and ominous tones of the film as it plods to its ultimate

Matt Roush: The Unicorn aired its second-season finale on March 18. B Positive moved into its time period to make room for United States of Al after Young Sheldon. We probably won’t know until May, when CBS sets its fall schedule, if The Unicorn is returning. I hope it does, but it’s not a typical CBS sitcom and is very much on the fence when it comes to renewal. If we lose both The Unicorn and Mom (ending after eight seasons) from the Thursday lineup, that’s going to be really sad.

Question: Am I wrong to be a Magnum P.I. purist and hate that they knocked off Icepick, that Tanaka isn’t in the show, and that Higgins and Magnum are buddies in the reboot? Also: I heard a rumor that
there’s going to be a NCIS: Hawaii and that Pride fits into this show. Any truth? —Gordon B. Matt Roush: You’re not wrong if it’s how you truly feel. My question would be: If you can’t accept this reimagined version of Magnum for what it is, why would you keep watching? Regarding NCIS Hawaii: While it’s still in development, everything, especially the casting of another NCIS stalwart, should be considered a rumor until the studio and network actually move forward. that has won praise from residents and officials throughout the state. The Edison Township Municipal Alliance and Youth Services Commission (EMA/YSC), which is a grassroots volunteer organization comprising community leaders, private citizens and human service agency representatives, works to promote and support programs and services to prevent alcohol, tobacco and other drug addiction, a teen pregnancy, school dropouts, violence and juvenile delinquency. The commission’s Substance Abuse Resource Center (SARC) was started by the Municipal Alliance from grant funds allocated through the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse through the Middlesex County Division of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. Its purpose is to be a confidential referral source for township residents to assess their need for alcoholism and/or drug abuse treatment. Residents are referred to the appropriate treatment sources as needed. The commission works on behalf of the residents by: • Identifying existing alcoholism and drug abuse resources which are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and substance abuse awareness. • Providing crisis intervention information/referral and crisis counseling. • Coordinating prevention and education projects within the community, thus avoiding duplication of services. • Assessing the continually changing needs of the community and creating new programming to meet those needs. In addition to offering guidance and resources to residents struggling with addiction, Edison Addiction Services is offering free online opioid overdose training at 6 p.m. May 4. This training will offer education and instruction on prevention strategies to prevent overdose death, including the appropriate administration of the emergency overdose medication naloxone. To register, contact Holly at 732-2487295 or email honorato@edisonnj.org. Edison Addiction Services has a Twitter feed (@ServicesEdison), a Facebook page (@Edison.Addiction.Services) that offer some information, but for more information and assistance for anyone struggling with substance abuse, residents can email honorato@edisonnj.org or call 732-2487295. PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
ST. JUDE NOVENA May the sacred heart of Jesus be the adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred heart of Jesus pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, hope of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day. By the eighth day your prayer will be answered. Say it for nine days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you, St. Jude. LF
